The Life and Times of Jar Jar Binks (Neatorama)
… as the summer rolled on, one name kept popping upon news reports and on Internet message boards: Jar Jar Binks. While there was some disagreement as to whether the rest of the film worked, the alien sidekick character was almost universally reviled. A typical review came from the Village Voice: "Jar Jar sucks the oxygen out of every scene he's in." So what went wrong??
Rob Bricken: The best anime series you've probably never seen (io9)
'Urusei Yatsura' was the sci-fi 'Simpsons' of '80s Japan. It was funny, clever, and creative to the point of insanity. It starred a sexy alien in a bikini. It was 'The Simpson's of Japan before The Simpsons had even aired in America. And by now, many people have forgotten it. Here's why it's time to rediscover the joys of 'Urusei Yatsura.'
David Bruce: Wise Up! Music (Athens News)
When Molly Ringwald was in the second grade, she wanted to be a jazz singer. (Today, she sings jazz in a group for fun.) When her class was given the assignment of doing a presentation on a great American hero, most kids did their projects on such prominent Americans as George Washington, but she did her project on the great jazz singer Bessie Smith. On American Life Story day, she showed up to school dressed in 1920s clothing, and she performed a few Bessie Smith songs such as "Gimme a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer." (Molly says, "Miss Kestenbaum was a very progressive 2nd-grade teacher.")

From there I was hooked cuz, as I said, I understood completely what Thompson was all about and secretly, mind you now, wanted to act out just like him. Thankfully, I never did... which is no doubt a good thing... Well, at least most of his more outrageous behavior... The other stuff, oh yeah...

Memo to JoeS: Vociferous thanks for the photo. The CG cutter is the 'Acacia', sister ship (Buoytender/Icebreaker) to my noteworthy 'Bramble' Coast Guard cutter added to National Register list - petoskeynews.com The Acacia was home ported in Grand Haven when I was stationed at Muskegon and Grand Haven's SAR stations as a Coxswain... I was a deck seaman (and did it all, becoming Leading Seaman) on the Bramble and she taught me how to become a mariner and later a Boatswain's Mate... Thanks, again, Pal...
~~~~~
For some reason that I've never been able to find out, the Coast Guard historically has named numerous classes of cutters (tenders, mostly) after trees, flowers and bushes... When the Bramble was decommissioned in '03 she was replaced by the cutter 'Hollyhock'...
Strange, but kinda cool...
I don't think I've ever been as sad as I've been since Friday... Ever... I've lost close active comrades, a number of times, but this is entirely different... and I don't know what the precise answer is to keep such an abomination from happening again. I wish I did. But, I really don't... and I don't think anybody else knows it, either... and that saddens me, too.
Taps - Senator Daniel Inouye, President pro tem of the Senate, Hawaii Senator for 50 years, US Army Captain - 442nd Regimental Combat Team (Nisei) in WWII and a Medal of Honor recipient among other awards. Seriously wounded in Italy, he lost an arm and rehabilitated at the huge former Percy Jones Army Hospital in Battle Creek, MI along with Bob Dole, also wounded in Italy, as well as the future Michigan Democrat Senator Phil Hart. The hospital was the former noted sanitarium founded by the Kellogg brothers. A magnificent building. It was later turned into a large logistical federal center for the military after the Korean war and placed on the National Register for Historic Places in 1976. In 2003 the building was rededicated and renamed the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center. I was there for the ceremony...
Hand Salute to you, Senator...
And as everyone knows the news these last few days has been just horrific. Of course everyone who works at this show and everyone here in this audience's thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by Friday's mindless tragedy. A pair of NASA spacecraft crashed into a mountain near the moon's north pole on Monday, bringing a deliberate end to a mission that peered into the lunar interior.
Engineers commanded the twin spacecraft, Ebb and Flow, to fire their engines and burn their remaining fuel. Ebb plunged first followed by Flow about 30 seconds later.
Afterward, NASA said it had dedicated the final resting spot in honor of mission team member, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space who died earlier this year. By design, the impact site was far away from the Apollo landings and other historical sites.
Ride's sister, who huddled in the NASA control room for the finale, said it might be time to dust off Ride's first telescope to view the newly named site.
"We can look at the moon with a new appreciation and a smile in the evening when we see it knowing that a little corner of the moon is named after Sally," the Rev. Bear Ride said in an interview.
Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese will get up close and personal with Bill Clinton in a documentary about the former U.S. president, cable channel HBO said on Monday.
The documentary, which has full cooperation from Clinton, promises to delve into the two-term Democrat's views on politics, history, culture and the world.
HBO would not say when filming would start or when the documentary was slated to air.
In July, pollsters Gallup measured Clinton's favorability rating at 66 percent and found that he is popular among nearly all segments of the U.S. public.
"Silver Linings Playbook" was the big winner at Sunday night's Satellite Awards, a show produced by and voted on by the International Press Academy and held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The David O. Russell comedy, which has been overshadowed in the awards picture by more recent films like "Les Miserables" and "Zero Dark Thirty," won five awards, including Best Motion Picture. Rusell won the award for directing, while stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence were named best actor and actress. The film also won for editing.
Supporting actor and actress awards went to Anne Hathaway for "Les Miserables" and Javier Bardem for "Skyfall."
Mark Boal won the original-screenplay award for "Zero Dark Thirty," while David Magee won the adapted-screenplay honor for "Life of Pi."
Other winners: "Rise of the Guardians," best animated film; "Chasing Ice," best documentary; and a tie between "The Intouchables" and "Pieta" for best foreign film.
Winter is coming - and so is a new line of beers based on HBO's fantasy drama "Game of Thrones." Presumably, all will boast a full, robust head, perhaps resting on top of a spike.
HBO is teaming with Cooperstown, N.Y. brewery Ommegang for a line of brews centered around the series, the New York Times reports. The first beer, Iron Throne Blonde Ale, is slated to go on sale in March, in time for the March 31 premiere of the show's third season.
It sounds like the perfect libation for watching the premiere from the comfort of your $30,000 Iron Throne replica.
A second "GoT"-themed beer will go on sale in fall 2013, with two more varieties expected to go on sale in conjunction with new seasons of the series.
After the Westboro Baptist Church posted on Twitter its intention to picket the Newtown, Conn., site where 26 shooting victims died, including 20 children, hackers retaliated.
The reason for the protest? Reportedly because Connecticut has legalized same-sex marriage.
Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the Topeka, Kan., Westboro church and daughter of church founder Fred Phelps, put on Twitter, "Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment."
Over the weekend, the hacktivist group Anonymous posted what it said was church members' personal information. In a video posted on Vimeo, the hacker group accused the organization of "breeding hatred" and adding, "We will destroy you. We are coming."
The inquest into the death of soul singer Amy Winehouse was overseen by a coroner who lacked the proper qualifications and must be heard again next month, officials said Monday.
Assistant deputy coroner Suzanne Greenaway, who handled the inquest, resigned in November 2011 after her qualifications were questioned.
Winehouse was found dead in her London home in July 2011 at age 27. In an inquest in October 2011, Greenaway ruled that the "Back to Black" singer had died of accidental alcohol poisoning.
Greenaway had been appointed an assistant deputy coroner in London in 2009 by her husband, Andrew Reid, the coroner for inner north London. But she resigned after authorities learned she had not been a registered U.K. lawyer for five years as required by the rules.
She had practiced law for a decade in her native Australia.
A federal judge on Monday sentenced a man who hacked into the personal online accounts of Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis and other women to 10 years in prison.
U.S. District Judge S. James Otero sentenced Christopher Chaney in Los Angeles after hearing from a tearful Johansson in a videotaped statement..
The biggest spectacle in the case was the revelation that nude photos taken by Johansson herself and meant for her then-husband Ryan Reynolds were placed on the Internet.
Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, Fla., pleaded guilty to counts that included wiretapping and unauthorized access to a computer.
Prosecutors said Chaney illegally accessed the email accounts of more than 50 people in the entertainment industry between November 2010 and October 2011. Aguilera, Kunis and Johansson agreed to have their identities made public with the hopes that the exposure about the case would provide awareness about online intrusion.
The premiere for Quentin Tarantino's latest film "Django Unchained," a violent spaghetti Western slave revenge tale, was cancelled on Monday in the wake of the school shooting in Connecticut last week, the film's studio said.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the tragedy in Newtown, CT and in this time of national mourning we have decided to forgo our scheduled event. However, we will be holding a private screening for the cast and crew and their friends and families," a spokesperson for The Weinstein Company said in a statement.
Tuesday's premiere in Los Angeles was scheduled to have a red carpet and party, but instead will be a private screening with no media coverage.
The film features Tarantino's trademark style of extensive graphic and bloody violence, along with dark humour, and is due to be released in U.S. movie theatres on Christmas Day.
A few weeks ago, a journal addressed to one Henry Walton Jones, Jr. - the given name of Hollywood's Indiana Jones - was placed inside another package and mailed from Guam to Italy, where someone had bought it on eBay.
But the smaller package fell out and was spotted by a U.S. postal worker, who saw it was addressed to Jones at the University of Chicago. The worker added the Chicago zip code and sent it on its way.
Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii has died at age 88 after battling a respiratory illness, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Monday. Inouye won the Medal of Honor in World War II-a conflict that cost him his right arm-and later became the first Japanese-American House member and then senator.
The long-serving senator-he was second in longevity in office only to the late Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia-served as the chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. He never boasted about his military service, but his obituary in Hawaii's Star-Advertiser newspaper included this astonishing passage:
In northern Italy in April 1945 as the war in Europe was coming to an end, Inouye moved his platoon against German troops near San Terenzo. Inouye crawled up a slope and tossed two hand grenades into a German machine-gun nest. He stood up with his tommy gun and raked a second machine-gun nest before being shot in the stomach. But he kept charging until his right arm was hit by an enemy rifle grenade and shattered.
"I looked at it, stunned and disbelieving. It dangled there by a few bloody shreds of tissue, my grenade still clenched in a fist that suddenly didn't belong to me anymore," Inouye wrote in his 1967 autobiography, "Journey to Washington," written with Lawrence Elliott.
Inouye wrote that he pried the grenade out of his right hand and threw it at the German gunman, who was killed by the explosion. He continued firing his gun until he was shot in the right leg and knocked down the hillside. Badly wounded, he ordered his men to keep attacking and they took the ridge from the enemy.
Inouye died at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington at 5:01 p.m., his office said. The senator generally stayed out of the limelight, but he was well known in Washington as a staunch defender of lawmakers' securing federal cash for their home states. He also enjoyed some prominence as a member of the committee that investigated the Watergate break-in that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation and chairing the special committee that investigated the Iran-Contra scandal.
