(Answer) You don't. You get down off a baby duck.
(A favorite joke of my 8-year old grandson - the apple of my eye.)
Maria in chicago was second:
Answer: you don't get down off an elephant, you get down off a duck.
And, Bruce S also got the 'trick' question:
You don't get 'down off an elephant'.
You get down off a duck.

Baron Dave*'s Ultra-Duper Trivia Question Of The Day
One of these things is not like the others
A: Jack Nicholson and Bill Murray
B: William Shatner and John Lithgow
C: Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer
D: Zero Mostel and Nathan Lane
E: Edmund Gwenn and Sebastian Cabot
The Augean stables could be used as a metaphor for?
A: The Bush administration
B: Churchhill downs
C: Any place full of horse shit
D: All of the above
mj was first, and partially correct:
It can't be B or D since CHD is cleaned daily. How about A and C, or were the inhabitants of the Augean stables bovine?
Chipshot in Tyler was second, and very correct, writing:
I have to say this was a trick question, as the Augean stables were full of cattle shit. This rules out "Churchill Downs" and "Anything full of horse shit," and "All of the above." This leaves only "The Bush Administration," which is so full of Bullshit that even Heracles would find it impossible to clean it out in a lifetime, much less a day.
bebo was third, and partly right, with:
I need a mulligan. A & C would be the correct answer.
Sally P got it right, writing:
Well, the cleaning Stables of Augeas was the fifth of twelve labors the Greek hero Hercules performed for Eurystheus. Hercules was told to perform a smelly service that would benefit humanity, but especially King Augeas of Elis (son of Poseidon).
"Augean stables" has now become synonymous with, "Herculean task," which is itself the equivalent of saying something is all but humanly impossible.
For this reason, I am choosing "A" or the Bush Administration because I am heavily influenced by my political convictions. I suppose it COULD be "D," but no, I'm going with "A" even though I may be wrong. After all, isn't the answer open to one's interpretation??
And, Joe ("Women know how they want their houses, so let 'em build 'em."
--Osawald Crumb) got it, too:
This is, of course, a trick question. The obvious answer SEEMS to be D: All of the above. But I'm not fooled, not me. They don't call me The Walking Encyclopedia of Totally Useless Information for nothing. The correct answer is A: The Bush administration. You see the Augean stables were full of cattle, not horses, and the Bush administration is full of Bull Shit.
Note From Buzzcook
The Augean stables was a cattle stable so it's kind of a trick question as the
Whitehouse is full of bull shit while Churchill Downs is horse shit.
Thanks to Baron Dave* and Buzzcook* for yesterday's and today's question.
I saw Bob Dylan way back in 1963 and I knew, just from his lyrical brilliance and odd vocal delivery, he was gonna be huge. He had a strange style but it was always his wonderful words that remained rolling around in my brain. Todd Hayes decided to make a movie that focuses primarily on the LOOK of the mercurial Mr. Dylan…..and we get 6 Bobs for the price of one.
Style over Substance
I found "I'm Not There" to be a juvenile embarrassment. Sure, Todd took a chance to do something artistically challenging but in my eyes, it flopped. Cate Blanchett got to play the coolest Dylan….The "Don't Look Back" Bob. I would suggest everyone go and view D.A. Pennebaker's classic tour flick of the 1965 tour of England.
I think a lot of critics enjoyed "I'm Not There" because Todd Hayes took an artistic leap…after all, who really knows the ever changing Bob? I had a friend who was an airline stewardess back in the 70's and she had Bob on her flights a lot…..she said he had really bad teeth and body odor….and smoked constantly….but we all want to know who he is…don't we……well you know what he said "It ain't Me babe…it ain't me you're lookin for babe!" ha ha ha
The Last Time I saw Bob Dylan
I rode my bike with my son over to the Greek Theater in Berkeley last year to see Bob Dylan….by the time we found a seat in the open air venue…Bob's young band came out and warmed us up….then Bob Dylan strutted onto the stage in black leather (he's 65 years old) and proceeded to sing the Rolling Stone's "Brown Sugar"…..it was awful but the crowd was ecstatic ….I said to my son "he still looks cool…but he can't sing worse than he never could"!
Purple Gene gives "I'm Not There" 3 superficial and phony high fives out of 10 for looking cool on paper but falling flat on it's face.

Eddie Van Halen's home has been saved from any damage after a water main break sent thousands of litres of water rushing through his yard and streets.
The rupture, due to a broken air valve, occurred about 1 a.m. Monday in Studio City north of Los Angeles. Water flowed down Coldwater Canyon Avenue and travelled as far as a mile away.
Fire spokesman Cecil Manresa confirmed the lone house affected by the water belongs to Van Halen. Mud and debris filled the pool and damaged a gate and block wall, but sandbags placed around the home prevented any water from entering inside.
It brightens homes from Australia to Greenland. But it took centuries for the Christmas tree to take popular root around the world.
An exhibition at Basel's Museum of Cultures tells the story of the symbol born on the Upper Rhine, not far from this Swiss city.
At first, the Christmas tree was mainly a custom among German Lutherans. In 1645, a Roman Catholic theologian in Strasbourg, Johann Conrad Dannhauer, denounced the ritual as a "trifle" distracting from faith.
Slowly the tree, most often a fir, began adorning the castles of European nobility. In a 1708 letter the German-born Duchess of Orleans recalled the tree as part of the cherished memories of her youth. But her request to present it at Versailles was rejected by her brother-in-law, King Louis XIV.
Striking a note of musical diplomacy, the New York Philharmonic said on Monday it plans to perform in North Korea -- the first major U.S. cultural visit to the reclusive country.
The orchestra said details of the trip will be announced on Tuesday by Christopher Hill, the lead U.S. negotiator with North Korea, Pak Gil Yon, North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, and Paul Guenther, the orchestra's chairman.
The performance is set for February 26 at the end of the Philharmonic's planned tour of China, the Times said, with the orchestra expected to stay in Pyongyang for two nights to teach and attend a ceremonial dinner.

The death last month of Kevin Dubrow, lead singer for the 1980s heavy metal band Quiet Riot, has been ruled an accidental cocaine overdose. Clark County coroner spokeswoman Samantha Charles confirmed the cause Monday after toxicology results were received Monday.
Dubrow was found dead Nov. 25 at his Las Vegas home. He was 52.
Quiet Riot was perhaps best known for its 1983 cover of "Cum on Feel the Noize." The song, featuring Dubrow's powerful, gravelly voice, appeared on the band's album "Metal Health" - which was the first by a metal band to reach No. 1 on the Billboard chart.
Gary Collins will not face additional charges as a result of the death of a driver involved in a crash that's already led to jail time for the TV personality. Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the city attorney's office, said Monday's decision was made because police determined Warren Gates, the other driver, caused the crash by failing to stop at a red light.
Chief coroner's investigator Craig Harvey said the cause of Gates' death was listed as an Oct. 23 auto accident and that an autopsy would be performed.
Collins was driving in the San Fernando Valley when his 2004 Ford Explorer was struck by a vehicle driven by Gates. Collins was not injured.
Collins, 69, was not found at fault in the collision, but officers said they smelled alcohol on his breath.

A Christian creationist biologist is suing the prestigious Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, claiming he was fired for refusing to accept evolution, lawyers involved in the case said on Friday.
Nathaniel Abraham, an Indian national who describes himself as a "Bible-believing Christian," said in the suit filed on Monday in U.S. District Court in Boston that he was fired in 2004 because he would not accept evolution as scientific fact.
The zebrafish specialist said his civil rights were violated when he was dismissed shortly after telling his superior he did not accept evolution because he believed the Bible presented a true account of human creation.
Abraham, 35, is now a biology professor at Liberty University, a Baptist school in Virginia founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, a Christian pastor and televangelist.
Las Vegas is building a museum about some of its founding fathers and most influential figures - guys with names like Bugsy, Lefty and Lansky.
The mob museum will stand as frank acknowledgment of the major role mobsters played in developing Las Vegas into the gambling capital of America and giving the city its rakish glamour during the 1940s and '50s.
"Let's be brutally honest, warts and all. This is more than legend. It's fact," said Mayor Oscar Goodman, a former defense attorney whose clients once included mobsters Meyer Lansky and Anthony "Tony the Ant" Spilotro. "This is something that differentiates us from other cities."
The project has gained the support of the FBI and is guided by a retired FBI agent. They say they are involved because you can't tell the stories of Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, his banker, Lansky, casino boss Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal and others without telling the story of the lawmen who pursued them.

Rising temperatures caused ice to melt in Greenland at a record rate this year, climate scientists reported Monday.
``The amount of ice lost by Greenland over the last year is the equivalent of two times all the ice in the Alps or a layer of water more than one-half-mile deep covering Washington, D.C. ,'' said Konrad Steffen , an Arctic expert at the University of Colorado in Boulder .
Steffen, who's spent 18 seasons working on the Greenland ice cap, attributed the accelerated melting to an air temperature increase of about 7 degrees Fahrenheit since 1991.
Denis Tyrrell was walking past a hole he'd filled in while searching for gems at Crater of Diamonds State Park, when he saw a sparkle. The 3.48-carat diamond turned out to the biggest that diamond Tyrrell had found in regular digs that he began in March. The stone is also the 1,000th diamond found at the park this year, a mark last reached in 1994, park interpreter Kim Garland said Monday.
Tyrrell, 48, made his find Sunday afternoon in soil that had come from the top layer of dirt where he dug.
The light-brown diamond has a rectangular shape, about the size of a piece of Chicklets chewing gum, he said.
