The Rubik's Cube, a 1974 invention of Ern? Rubik of Hungary, fascinated people around the globe and became one of the most popular games in America in the early 1980s, having been initially released as the Magic Cube in Hungary in late 1977, and then re-manufactured and released in the western world as Rubik's Cube in 1980. As of January 2009 350 million cubes have sold worldwide making it the world's top-selling puzzle game. It earned a place as a permanent exhibit in New York's Museum of Modern Art and entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 1982. The Cube retains a dedicated following, with almost 40,000 entries on YouTube featuring tutorials and video clips of quick solutions.

Lois Of Oregon was first, and correct, with:
Feh! So we can blame the Hungarians for that horrible
Rubik's Cube? As if Zah Zah Gabor wasn't enough! I hated it
then and I hate it now. It does however make a great
stocking stuffer for people you dislike.
Marian answered:
Rubik's Cube...one is still on my late fathers end table in the living room for the grandkids and great grandkids to play with. Two brothers have bought the rest of us out and still live there. It is a great place to visit. Wonderful memories there.

To teach 3D thinkin, that would be Rubik's cube. My co worker's kid solved it by peeling off all the squares and sticking them back on on the correct sides. I give him points for thinking outside the box (cube).

My daughter received one of these for Xmas when she was 12. She struggled with it for a few days, and then solved it! We were so proud of her.
Her brother, then 8, begged to have a try, so she mixed it up and handed it to him. "Here, let's see if you can do it at all..." (Humility was not her strong virtue when it came to the pesky brother at that age.)
But, undeterred, he took it and went off to his room.
Under an hour later, he emerged, apparently having the puzzle solved!
We thought he was a genius!
Come to find out, that he ran out of patience, peeled off the color stickers and re stuck them in the right order to win!
His sister was livid, but I was choking back laughter. My daughter really IS book smart, but my son colors outside of the box...
It is still a sore point with her today - almost 30 years later.
Dale of Diamond Springs, Norfallcali, replied:
Rubik's Cube. Fucking things frustrated the hell out of me. Only solved it when I was stoned. Here's some cheat sheets, for you cheaters.

Cast members of "The Sopranos" were on hand over the weekend as a New Jersey town remembered native son James Gandolfini.
Park Ridge dedicated a section of Park Avenue to the actor best known for his role as mobster Tony Soprano in the TV series. Gandolfini died in Italy in June.
Cast members Steve Schirripa, Vincent Curatola, Tony Sirico, Dominic Chianese, Vincent Pastore and John Ventimiglia were among the hundreds of people who turned out Sunday in the northern New Jersey town where Gandolfini grew up and returned often.
The Record newspaper reports that Gandolfini's 14-year-old son, Michael, said he would never forget eating with his father at a nearby diner. He said his father told him about every place in the town.
Leaving 'Good Morning America' For The Weather Channel
Sam Champion
"Good Morning America" weather anchor Sam Champion is leaving ABC News to join The Weather Channel.
Champion will anchor the network's new flagship morning show, which is set to debut in early 2014, The Weather Channel president David Clark said Monday.
Based at The Weather Channel headquarters in Atlanta, Champion will also assume managing editor responsibilities at the network.
His last day on "GMA" is Wednesday. He had been on that program since 2006, and joined ABC-owned local New York station WABC in 1988.

Two concert series in a year on Broadway is apparently too much for The Rascals: The '60s-era blue-eyed soul quartet has abandoned plans to play the Marquis Theatre this month.
In a statement released Monday, the band said a scheduling conflict with producer Stevie Van Zandt prompted the cancellation of a series of shows set to run from Dec. 16 to Jan. 5.
Van Zandt is filming of the third season of his Netflix show "Lilyhammer" and touring with Bruce Springsteen.
"The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream" - featuring the songs "Good Lovin,'" "People Got to Be Free" and "I've Been Lonely Too Long" performed by the original members - played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre earlier this year.
Ryan O'Neal told a jury Monday that he owns an Andy Warhol portrait of Farrah Fawcett and it was not a secret that he had removed the artwork from her home after her death.
"The painting is mine," the Oscar-nominated actor testified during a lawsuit filed by the University of Texas at Austin to determine ownership of the portrait done in 1980.
The university claims Fawcett left the painting to the school as part of a donation of her artwork.
The artist created two versions of the portrait - one that currently remains over O'Neal's bed at his Malibu beach house and another that is on display at the university's Blanton Museum of Art in Austin.
Beck also questioned O'Neal about a 1997 incident in which Fawcett caught O'Neal in bed with another woman. The lawyer has contended that changed the pair's relationship and by the following year, the Warhol portrait that hung over O'Neal's bed was moved to the home of the actress.

The music director and chief conductor of the Bolshoi theatre, Vassily Sinaisky, has quit, the theatre's spokeswoman said Monday, the latest blow to befall the legendary theatre.
Sinaisky presented his letter of resignation to the Bolshoi's director, Vladimir Urin, and it was accepted, spokeswoman Yekaterina Novikova told AFP.
Sinaisky, who has been the Bolshoi's leading conductor since 2010, was due to conduct Verdi's opera "Don Carlos", which is premiering at the theatre in two weeks.
Sinaisky, 66, is originally from Russia's northern Komi republic, and had worked as chief conductor of the Latvian national symphony in the Soviet era. Besides the Bolshoi, he is a principal conductor in the Malmo Symphony Orchestra and chief guest conductor with the BBC Philharmonic.
Sinaisky's abrupt departure comes as a surprise. Only recently he enthusiastically talked about the theatre's production plans, and in October, he conducted the premiere of Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman" to mostly positive reviews.

One of China's top movie directors has admitted having three children with his current wife, according to a studio media posting, apologising after months of speculation he broke the country's controversial family planning laws.
Zhang Yimou, the maker of "Raise the Red Lantern" and "Red Sorghum", has two sons and a daughter with his current wife, the Yimou Studio said in its verified account on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter.
That would mean Zhang, 62, has a total of four children including a daughter with his ex-wife, potentially violating China's one child policy.
Zhang "would like to make a sincere apology to the public for the negative ramifications caused", said the posting by Yimou Studio, which says it is affiliated to the director.
The disclosure comes after months of speculation that he has seven or eight children by three or four women.

The biggest Republican-leaning money machines are spending dramatically less this year to help the party ahead of the 2014 Senate elections, two years after millions of dollars in early advertising by outside groups against Democrats backfired in embarrassing losses in otherwise winnable races.
Groups such as American Crossroads and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce no longer are willing to risk major investments on hard-line conservatives who embarrassed GOP leaders last fall and rattled the confidence of party donors. Many remain concerned after last month's government shutdown highlighted Republican divisions.
"Is the malaise still there? Yes," said Lisa Wagner, a Republican fundraiser in the Chicago area. "But they are nervous about giving in light of the shutdown."
Outside spending on television ads designed to benefit Republican Senate candidates is down almost 60 percent compared with two years ago, according to spending reports provided to The Associated Press. There are signs that the shift is shaping the national fight for the Senate majority.

Collapsing walls at the ancient Roman city of Pompeii have raised fresh concerns about Italy's efforts to maintain one of the world's most treasured sites, preserved for 2,000 years but now crumbling from neglect.
On Monday, site officials said part of a wall had collapsed on one of Pompeii's major streets after weeks of heavy rains and wind. Plaster had also fallen off the wall of the ornately frescoed House of the Small Fountain.
A series of collapses in Pompeii over the last month led Italian media to dub it a "Black November" for the ancient city, preserved under ash from a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. and rediscovered in the 18th century, revealing a time capsule of daily life in Roman times.
The declaration of a state of emergency five years ago failed to halt the deterioration amid allegations that funds were being siphoned off by the mafia, and reports of mismanagement and looting. The collapse of the frescoed House of the Gladiators caused international outcry in 2010.
"Scissors" dancers wait to perform in a national scissors dance competition in the outskirts of Lima December 1, 2013. Bruce Lee fans who covet the original yellow jumpsuit that the martial arts legend wore onscreen will get a chance to bid for it at a Hong Kong auction this week.
It's part of a collection of 14 items including clothing and props going on the block on Thursday.
Lee wore the yellow suit, with black stripes down the sides, in "Game of Death." Lee died in 1973, before the movie was finished. An incomplete version was released that year, followed by a feature-length version in 1978 cobbled together with footage filmed after his death.
Spink auction house estimates the suit will fetch 250,000 to 300,000 Hong Kong dollars ($32,250-$38,700).
The jumpsuit was custom-made for Lee by a Hong Kong tailor but is smaller than its original size, having shrunk by about 15 centimetres (6 inches) when it was washed after the filming, said the auction house's vice chairman, Anna Lee.

A memorabilia collector is selling the grey wool suit Gene Kelly wore as he joyously danced in a downpour in the Hollywood musical "Singin' in the Rain."
The suit is expected to sell for more than $20,000 when Heritage Auctions offers it up Friday in Dallas. Memorabilia collector Gerry Sola has had the suit for more than four decades after buying it for $10 at a 1970 sale of MGM props and wardrobe items following the sale of the studio to financier Kirk Kerkorian.
Sola, a retired postal worker, had travelled from his home in Northern California to Los Angeles for the 1970 MGM sale, which progressed from an auction to a garage sale of sorts with racks of clothing for sale
Sola said that he was sorting through racks of clothing when he ran across the grey suit marked as Kelly's and had a feeling it was the one from the famous scene in the 1952 musical. The jacket's inside breast pocket has an MGM label with Kelly's name and the production number.
"I've had it for over 40 years. I'm getting older. It's time to kind of let this stuff go," said Sola, 72.
This handout provided by SCP Auctions, Inc., shows the front, left, and back, right, of one of Jesse Owens' four gold medals won at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. SCP Auctions says the medal could go for more than $1 million when the auction opens.
