Young Americans are able to stay on the parent's health plan for longer. And one million more consumers are ready to get the plan that's right for them. And that's just in one month.?

That was the end of it, Jen thought, until three years later when Jen's husband got an email from Kleargear.com demanding the post be removed or they would be fined.

Trivia Question of the Day

If you are told to go Widdershins, what do you do?

Send your answer to Marty

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What form of transportation employed Gandy Dancers?

      Railroad                                                      Source

Gandy dancer is a slang term used for early railroad workers who laid and maintained railroad tracks in the years before the work was done by machines.        Source

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
   Gandy dancers were railroad workers.

Lois Of Oregon said:    Shoot. Had to look this one up. Google says Gandy Dancers are the guys who inspired the great movie line: "I hired you people to try to get a little track laid, not to jump around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots". It all makes sense now!

mj wrote:
They were the corps de ballet for the iron horse
Gandy dancers drove the spikes into the rails during the construction of the railroads. Since it took a couple of men to accomplish this quickly, each man had to strike sequentially, and keeping up a rhythm was important. It's also the name of a very nice restaurant in Station Square (old Pgh and Lake Erie railroad station) in Pittsburgh.

Alan J answered:
   The Railroads.

John I from Hawai`i says,
   "trains?"

Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
The term gandy-dancer is a railroad slang word for a person who works as a track maintenance person.

Larry in Chicagoland, IL replied
According to Bruce Utah Phillips….Gandy dancers jumped up and down in a dancing manner on Gandy brand shovels as they were shoved under steel rails while other railroad workers shoved gravel under the rails to level them on the railroad bed.

George M wrote:
From what I recall, Marty, gandy dancers could be found working the railroads.

Adam answered:
The railroads, as they were being built.

DanD replied:
I remember hearing that term in a western movie (or perhaps some kind of documentary) referring to the people laying railroad tracks.
  Dicey times ~
SallyP, where were you at when JFK caught some bullets? As an AF dependent child living an idyllic life in a small, seaside bungalow next to the sound at Ft. Walton Beach in Florida, one early morning I can still remember my father stalking out the door in full Combat Control regalia while unceremoniously muttering that we were going to blow them motherfuckers off the face of the earth ... and he didn't even like Kennedy.
For me, that was the day the music died.

Sally said:
Finally, watching the old western TV shows pays off! Tis the Railroad that used the Gandy Dancers to bend rails and tracks.

Reenactment - guy in the middle of the track had to 'dance' to get out of the way of the other two when the rail moves forward.
PS: @B2BB, in reference to your, "Single shot 410 bore shotgun," and your effort to turn it into a, "12 gauge 5 shot pump-action deerslayer," we will need a video demonstration here, to help us understand exactly that which you did for said enlargement. I'm sure something can be worked out between Marty and your (cough, cough) 'agent.' Thanking your in advance...

lfonso responded:
   Railroads

Marian answered:
gandy dancers laid and maintained railroad tracks.

Dale of "it looks like it's gonna rain" Diamond Springs, Norcali, answered:
A "gandy dancer" is a railway worker who tamps down the earth between the ties, or otherwise "dances" on the track. Real poor immigrants and slaves worked for the early railroad oligarchs. They were treated as or just above slave status, but built the railroads.

MAM   wrote:

Trains... There's a restaurant/lounge in Ann Arbor with the name "The Gandy Dancer". The building is the old train station...

It's a pretty high-end place (valet parking, dontcha know) and it's a favorite hang-out place, I found, for the upper echelon faculty and administration of the very nearby University of Michigan. Next door is the new Amtrak station, which I rode through many times on day trips from Battle Creek to the Ann Arbor VAMC. One late afternoon with time on my hands before my return trip, I went in there for a frosty brew. I was respectably dressed, and all, but I was certainly out of place by the cold, but correct, reception I received by the white shirt-black bow tie clad bartender. Soon thereafter, the place filled up with said U of M nabobs. I could have been invisible (and probably was, to them) as I overheard them prattle on about their life and times at "The U"... I left after an earful of that 'La-de-da' and went across the street to "Casey's" which I discovered to be a great bar-and-grill (superb food) and I fit right in with that crowd which was a much less pretentious, fun-lovin' and boisterous horde of U of M people, young and not-so-much. My kinda place and I highly recommend it if'n you find yerself in Ann Arbor... Oh, the bartender there was a student, and also a Michigan Army National Guard infantry sergeant. Yeah, we hit it off...

Named To Presidential Committee On Arts, Humanities

Kal Penn

The White House says President Barack Obama is appointing actor Kal Penn to be a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

The actor's legal name is Kalpen Modi. He's best known to film and television audiences for his roles in "Harold and Kumar" and "House."

He's also no stranger to the White House. Penn worked previously for Obama in the White House's Office of Public Engagement. He was a major draw last year at the Democratic convention with a good-humoured speech asking voters to stay engaged.

The actor returned to the White House in July along with singer Jennifer Hudson and actress Amy Poehler to promote Obama's health care law.

Apologizes For Accurate Statement

Martin Bashir

MSNBC commentator Martin Bashir issued an apology on Monday for suggesting that someone should defecate on former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin (R-Quitter).

The remark, which Bashir made on his MSNBC program, sparked a firestorm of criticism. Bashir was responding to a comment Palin made in which the former half-term Alaska governor compared the U.S. debt to slavery.

Bashir, who also called Palin a "world-class idiot," pounced on the slavery comparison. During his Friday show on MSNBC, Bashir recounted a story about an 18th-century slave owner named Thomas Thistlewood. Bashir explained that Thistlewood recorded his brutality in a diary which included stories of forcing slaves to defecate and urinate on each other as a form of punishment.

Bashir then said, "When Mrs. Palin invokes slavery, she doesn't just prove her rank ignorance. She confirms if anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, she would be the outstanding candidate."

'Selfie' Beats 'Twerk'

Word Of The Year

"Selfie" - a self portrait usually on a smartphone or webcam - was selected word of the year on Tuesday by the Oxford Dictionaries, based on a 17,000 percent rise in its usage from a year ago.

"Selfie" was chosen after it "gained momentum throughout the English-speaking world in 2013 as it evolved from a social media buzzword to mainstream shorthand for a self-portrait photograph", Oxford Dictionaries said in a statement.

"Selfie" beat a number of other buzzwords of 2013, including "twerk" referring to dancing in a sexually provocative manner and which was popularized by singer Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards last August.

"Selfie" has spawned a raft of spinoffs, including "helfie" for a picture taken of someone's own hair, "belfie" for taking a picture of your own posterior and "drelfie" for a self portrait while in a drunken state.

Emerson College To Rename Communication School

Ron Burgundy

It's kind of a big deal that Emerson College is changing the name of its school of communication.

The college in Boston will rename the school - for one day only - the Ron Burgundy School of Communication on Dec. 4 to honour the fictitious television anchorman.

Actor Will Ferrell, in character, is scheduled to share his path to journalism greatness with students. His visit will include a news conference, the renaming ceremony and a screening of "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Ferrell, as himself, will introduce the movie.

Burgundy, known for telling people he's "kind of a big deal," says he hopes to let students know how hard it is to make it to the top, in his words, "especially if you don't have good hair."

Phone-Hacking Trial

Rupert

Rebekah Brooks, the former chief of Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper business, was a "demanding boss" who would not simply accept legal advice on stories without explanation, her trial for alleged phone-hacking offences heard on Monday.

Justin Walford, a senior lawyer at the British paper arm of Murdoch's News Corp., also told the Old Bailey he had been assured phone-hacking was limited to the News of the World newspaper which Murdoch closed down in 2011 following revelations about the illegal practice.

Brooks, who was the former editor of Murdoch's Sun and News of the World titles, denies conspiracy to hack phones and authorize illegal payments as well as charges of hindering the police investigation.

Walford, whose main responsibility after joining Murdoch's News International was the Sun, said he asked in 2006 whether there had been any phone-hacking at the paper following the arrest of the News of the World's royal reporter Clive Goodman.

"I was given assurance it had not happened at the Sun. Obviously I accepted those assurances," he said.

Russia Releases Third Activist

Greenpeace

A Russian court has granted bail to a third crew member arrested for a protest against Arctic oil drilling, Greenpeace said Tuesday.

Greenpeace press secretary Andrei Allakhverdov was released on bail of two million rubles ($61,400) late Monday, the group's spokesman Dmitry Artamonov told AFP.

The ruling came after the Saint Petersburg court on Monday freed the ship's doctor, Yekaterina Zaspa, and a freelance photographer working for Greenpeace, Denis Sinyakov, on bail.

But another Saint Petersburg court extended the pre-trial detention of an Australian activist, Colin Russell to February 24, a day after the end of the Sochi Winter Games.

White Supremacist Accused

Leith, North Dakota

A U.S. white supremacist was charged on Monday with terrorizing residents of the small North Dakota town where he had sought to create a white enclave, authorities said.

Craig Cobb was arrested on Saturday along with Kynan Dutton over accusations they were brandishing firearms and sticks and threatening residents in the town of Leith, said Todd Schwarz, assistant state's attorney for Grant County.

"The people of Leith have put up with more than enough and Mr. Cobb has crossed the line," Schwarz said. "In a very short period of time it escalated beyond things that would be protected by free speech."

Cobb and Dutton were charged with seven counts each of terrorizing, Schwarz said. Five counts involve firearms, which carry a minimum two years in prison without parole if convicted, and two others involved canes or sticks, he said.

Schwarz said Cobb and Dutton were carrying long weapons, a shotgun and another long gun in the incidents on Saturday. They have been held since their arrest by the Grant County sheriff's office, and authorities want them held without bond, he said.

CNBC President and Chief Executive Mark Hoffman announced Bartiromo's departure in a memo to employees on Monday and said she will leave the company when her contract expires on November 24.

Hoffman did not say where Bartiromo was going, but a source familiar with the matter confirmed media reports that she was headed to Fox Business Network, the cable broadcaster founded six years ago by Rupert Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox Inc to take on CNBC, owned by Comcast Corp.

The Fox Business Network, launched in October 2007, become (sic) profitable in June but trails CNBC in the ratings.

Pistol Fails To Sell

'Wild Bill' Hickok

The revolver carried by Old West lawman James "Wild Bill" Hickok on the day he was shot down at a Deadwood saloon failed to sell at an auction in San Francisco on Monday, with bidders failing to meet the steep reserve set by the gun's owners.

Bonhams Auctioneers started the bidding for the Smith & Wesson No. 2 revolver at $150,000, but potential buyers were only willing to pay $220,000, less than what the consigners would sell it for, Bonhams arms and armor specialist James Ferrell said.

The reserve price is private, but it is typically set between 20 and 30 percent less than the minimum of the item's estimated value, Ferrell said. Hickok's revolver was valued between $300,000 and $500,000.

According to Bonhams' rules, the gun's owners could take the pistol back, list it in an upcoming sale or accept bids submitted in the days following the auction.
