Paul Krugman: Vouchers for Veterans (New York Times)
American health care is remarkably diverse. In terms of how care is paid for and delivered, many of us effectively live in Canada, some live in Switzerland, some live in Britain, and some live in the unregulated market of conservative dreams. One result of this diversity is that we have plenty of home-grown evidence about what works and what doesn't.

"Stark landscapes populated with impossible combinations of wildlife, vulnerable humans and ominous weather-these images are the stuff of dreams if you live on the dark side, beautifully photographed and digitally manipulated by artist Sarolta Ban. June Thomas: Barbara Grier, Pioneer of Lesbian Literature, 1933-2011 (Slate)
Barbara Grier died on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at the age of 78. That the vast majority of people reading this will not recognize that name is a sad reflection of the isolation of lesbian literature from the cultural mainstream.

By 1912 the Individual "Dixie" Drinking Cup Company's product was called the Health Kup. Gee Whiz, I can even remember the :Dixie" cup when I was a child. My mother didn't buy them, she couldn't imagine 'buying' a drinking cup, using it once, and throwing it away!
PS: That just reminded me of the first time I saw 'bottled' water for sale in the supermarket. It must have been the early 60's, and I thought to myself: "That will be the day I PAY for a bottle of H2o!" Now, I buy it by the case, as does everyone else...
Oh, and can anyone else remember the first "TV dinners?" They came in an aluminum dish, and took an hour to cook in your oven! They also tasted like cardboard as I recall.
PPS: I am sending in my pledge a few days early to help the cause. It's not much, but it does add up, and you don't miss it that way...
Adam answered:
An athletic sup...oohhh, the Dixie Cup.
I built my roommate a new computer for $200 by reusing the hard-drive and operating system disks (new MB/Prosc, memory, case).

Dixie Cups I believe!
PS-Sorry about your woes. I have always been caught with hardware and software issues the last 20 years. Being a QB Pro Advisor for 15 years, that has always been exciting! Today none of my clients can email out of QB - their servers are down. A fix maybe by tomorrow. After all these years I still flip off my system when it decides to be a dickhead.

I've been following presidential politics since Eisenhower and Stevenson and I gotta tell ya, I've never seen a dumber bunch of idiots running for president than the current bunch republicans. Forty years ago they would all have been assigned to the lunatic fringe, along with George Lincoln Rockwell. Dumber that a box of rocks. (Sorry rocks, don't mean to be disparaging.)

The Occupy Wall Street movement has developed its cadre of celebrity supporters, but consider one man unimpressed: Frank Miller.
The graphic novelist, screenwriter and occasional director posted a rant on his personal blog about the "schmucks" of the Occupy movement, and those who have embraced it.
Miller accuses everyone of being too "polite" and writes that "'Occupy' is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America."
Miller added that it is "nothing short of a clumsy, poorly expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the "movement" -- HAH! Some "movement", except if the word "bowel" is attached - is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves."
Both the publisher and the managing editor of Newsweek-Daily Beast are leaving the company, a spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap Monday.
The moves appear unrelated, though both were recent hires at the year-old joint venture.
Ray Chelstowski came aboard as the publisher of Newsweek and the Daily Beast in January, but he is now out and Eric Danetz, formerly of CBS Interactive, will inherit his responsibilities as senior VP of sales.
Tom Weber, the managing editor who took over in May, will leave in two weeks as the company restructures its editorial department.
Newsweek and the Daily Beast merged last November, and many will interpret Chelstowski's ouster as a sign that the company is unhappy with ad sales thus far. Ad revenue both online and in print are down, according to a report in Adweek.
Singer and songwriter Neil Diamond is to perform on South Dakota's float in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.
Diamond is known for his songs that have become anthems at ballparks and bars. The Grammy award winner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year and is among the artists to be honored next month at the Kennedy Center Honors.
The South Dakota Department of Tourism's "Mount Rushmore's American Pride" float will feature Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Black Hills National Forest and Badlands National Park in an effort to drive more visitors to the state.
KOTA-TV reports (http://bit.ly/s9jV9D ) that the float is only the second state float to be accepted into the famous parade.
Frivolous and selfish is how lawyers for Amazon.com describe a lawsuit brought by an actress upset that her age - 40 - was revealed on an Internet database.
The company, along with its Internet Movie Database, asked a U.S. judge last week to dismiss the million-dollar complaint brought by the woman, who identified herself only as Jane Doe, a Texas resident of Asian descent.
The woman claimed that soon after she signed up for a subscription service called IMDb Pro, her birthdate appeared on her profile on the database - and her offers for roles dropped sharply. She alleged that Amazon and IMDb had used her credit card information to glean her birthdate, which she had always tried to keep a secret.
The case prompted discussions about ageism in Hollywood - as well as rampant online speculation about who the actress might be. But in its two motions to dismiss the case, Amazon and IMDb argued that it's about something else: "the perpetration of fraud."
A Roman Catholic diocese raised its offer for the financially ailing Crystal Cathedral, home of the long-running televangelist show "Hour of Power," as a federal bankruptcy court evaluated competing bids for the sprawling grounds Monday.
Diocese of Orange attorney Alan Martin said the new offer was $57.5 million, up from $55.4 million, to address what were described as feasibility concerns stemming from intellectual property and other claims by the family of the Rev. Robert Schuller, the televangelist who founded of the megachurch.
At the hearing, Judge Robert Kwan is examining bids by the diocese and Orange County's Chapman University, which has offered $51.5 million.
The Crystal Cathedral's board has given its blessing to both bids but prefers the offer from Chapman University, which would enable the church to lease back and eventually repurchase buildings on the Garden Grove campus.

Nearly 200 years after Jane Austen's untimely death, crime novelist Lindsay Ashford has come up with a new explanation: arsenic poisoning.
Austen, the English author of such classic novels as "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility," died in 1817 at age 41. Her death has been attributed to everything from cancer to Addison's disease.
But Ashford, who moved to Austen's village of Chawton three years ago and started writing her new crime novel in the former home of Austen's brother, stumbled across another possibility - that Austen died of arsenic poisoning.
While reading Austen's correspondence, Ashford came across a line the novelist wrote just a few months before she died: "I am considerably better now and am recovering my looks a little, which have been bad enough, black and white and every wrong colour."
Familiar with poisons from researching her crime novels, Ashford recognized that Austen's symptoms could be attributed to arsenic poisoning, which can turn patches of skin brown or black while other areas go white.
Here's a new geological conundrum courtesy of the Mysterious East: A group of people studying online maps stumbled across a series of strange patterns in the Chinese desert large enough to be seen from space. The unusual white designs appear to have been etched into the ground and their creators clearly don't lack for ambition: They are over one mile long and 3,000 feet wide. The researchers have yet to identify the silver or white material used to fabricate these outsize desert grids.
So why would the Chinese government--or anyone, for that matter--go to such trouble to paint such gigantic stripes on such remote territory? People analyzing the photos suggest the Chinese military may have constructed them as space-targeting grids.
According to Gizmodo , the various patterned sites are located in Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Gansu, north of the Shule River. The Shule crosses the Tibetan Plateau to the west into the Kumtag Desert-meaning that the painted sites would serve as an ideal, isolated location for training in military targeting.
