William H. Gross: Scrooge McDucks (PIMCO)
1) Growth depends on investment and investment in part depends on an equitable rebalancing of personal income taxes, capital gains and carried interest. 2) The era of taxing "capital" at lower rates than "labor" should end. 3) Investors in the U.S. and elsewhere must look for investment in the real economy, not share buy-back maneuvers that artificially elevate stock prices.
Streetmusician sings - Original singer comes along and joins him (YouTube)
What a huge surprise for this streetmusician and us! We were filming him singing the song "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat, when suddenly Jimmy Somerville (the original singer) comes up and joins him singing! Awesome, things like that only happen in Berlin!
David Bruce: Wise Up! Death (Athens News)
Even on the day that Thomas More died, he was able to make jokes. On July 16, 1535, he dressed in his best clothing, knowing that he was to be beheaded that day. Climbing up the scaffold, he told the executioner, "I pray thee see me safe up, and for my coming down, let me shift for myself!" Before he was beheaded, he asked that his beard be spared-after all, it was not accused of treason.
The Courtship of Eddie's Father is an American television sitcom based on the 1963 movie of the same name, which was based on the book written by Mark Toby (edited by Dorothy Wilson). It tells the story of a widower, Tom Corbett (played by Bill Bixby), who is a magazine publisher, and his son, Eddie (played by Brandon Cruz), who believes his father should marry, and manipulates situations surrounding the women his father is interested in. ABC had acquired the rights to the story; the series debuted on September 17, 1969, and was last broadcast on March 1, 1972.
Comedy producer James Komack served as both the creator and the executive producer of the show. The television show's theme song, "Best Friend", was written and performed by Harry Nilsson, and was played over opening credits showing Bixby and Cruz in various happy moments. The song has often been used since that time as an iconic indication of father-son bonding.

Marian was first, and correct, with:
The Courtship of Eddie's Father.... I should have known the answer to yesterday's question because I really disliked that act and Ed stooping to give him a kiss which was so unlike him.
Lois Of Oregon said:
I know this one! It's "The Courtship Of Eddie's Father": the
touching story of a young man who became a widower when he
turned huge and green and smashed his wife to death after he
discovered she had given birth to the love child of the
martian who lived over their garage.

"Best Friend", written and performed by Harry Nilsson, was the theme song to the insipid TV series, "The Courtship of Eddie's Father."
While it was sad that Bixby died at such a young age, the show left me flat.
PS: The premise of the parent being the 'best friend' irks me. As my mother would say, "Your friends are in the street, your parents live in your house." But what she really meant (Jewish mother's talk in proverbs) was that your parents are there to teach, protect and love you no matter what. Friends are to play with... And, your parent will say to you what a friend never would, LOL!
And, Joe S answered:
Courtship of Eddie's Father, or something like that. I even watched that show sometimes, couldn't take too much of it though. I was afraid I'd lapse into a diabetic coma.
Getting back to yesterday, Only Charlie and Marty answered Topo Gigio so I say you two are wrong.
And speaking of yesterday here's a front view of the back view that BtttbBob posted yesterday. One of my heart-throbs too BttbBob.
Weird - saw 2 car accidents today - one on the way to work, one on the way home, both on the 405.
In both instances, an SUV rear-ended a smaller car. Northbound, both vehicles were moving, and southbound, the smaller car was stopped due to traffic.
Screech, thud.

The California Endowment, a private foundation that is spending millions to promote President Barack Obama's signature law, recently provided a $500,000 grant to ensure TV writers and producers have information about theAffordable Care Act that can be stitched into plot lines watched by millions.
The aim is to produce compelling prime-time narratives that encourage Americans to enroll, especially the young and healthy, Hispanics and other key demographic groups needed to make the overhaul a success.
"We know from research that when people watch entertainment television, even if they know it's fiction, they tend to believe that the factual stuff is actually factual," said Martin Kaplan of the University of Southern California's Norman Lear Center, which received the grant.
The public typically gets as much, if not more, information about current events from favorite TV programs as mainstream news outlets, Kaplan said, so "people learn from these shows."
Actors Jonah Hill, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kristen Bell are among a batch of celebrities donning Russian-language "Love Conquers Hate" T-shirts to show support for gays in Russia alarmed by a new law banning pro-gay "propaganda."
It's part of an initiative launched Monday by the Human Rights Campaign, the largest U.S. gay-rights group.
Participating celebrities will share photos of themselves wearing the T-shirts on their social media platforms, encouraging followers to do likewise. The HRC says all net proceeds from shirt sales will go to a fund supporting gay-rights efforts in Russia.
According to the HRC, other celebrities joining the T-shirt campaign include Fergie, Kelly Osbourne, Ricky Martin, Kevin Bacon, Doutzen Kroes, Anthony Bourdain, Tim Gunn, Perez Hilton, Todd Glass, Jonathan Del Arco, Amanda Leigh Dunn, Ana Matronic, Olympic swimmer Craig Gibbons, NBA basketball player Jason Collins, country singer Maggie Rose and soccer players Jozy Altidore, Lori Lindsey and Megan Rapinoe.
The voice of Marilyn Monroe will feature in a new television ad for Chanel No. 5 after previously unheard audio was unearthed of the screen siren confirming she wore only the iconic perfume to bed.
The recording, from an interview given to Marie Claire journalist Georges Belmont in 1960, was discovered by Chanel last year and will be used in a global campaign rolling out this month.
"You know, they ask you questions. Well just an example, 'What do you wear to bed? Do you wear a pyjama top? The bottoms of the pyjamas? Or a nightgown?'" she says in the recording.
"So I said Chanel No. 5! Because it's the truth. And yet I don't want to say 'nude'. But it's the truth."

Former PBS journalist Ray Suarez is joining Al-Jazeera America to host a daily show, "Inside Story," that airs in the late afternoon each weekday.
Suarez worked at PBS' "NewsHour" for 20 years, most recently as chief national correspondent. He's also worked for CNN, NPR and NBC's local station in Chicago. He'll start at Al-Jazeera America next Monday.
Since its launch in August, Al-Jazeera has struggled to find an audience in the United States, averaging 11,000 viewers in daytime during October.
Suarez said he looked forward to a show that gives an in-depth look at the news, rather than "six people sitting around a table yelling at each other."
Nine women and three men were sworn in as a jury Tuesday to hear Britain's tabloid phone hacking trial - and warned by the judge to ignore a morass of "inaccurate and misleading" reports about the high-profile case.
Two former senior executives in Rupert Murdoch's media empire - former News of the World editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson - and six others face charges stemming from the revelation that employees at the Murdoch-owned tabloid eavesdropped on the phone voicemails of celebrities, politicians, crime victims and others in their search for scoops. They all deny the charges.
The hacking scandal led Murdoch to shut the 168-year-old newspaper and continues to shake Britain's media, police and political establishments.
Judge John Saunders told the jury at London's Central Criminal Court that the case had received "an unprecedented amount" of publicity that they must ignore in order to try the defendants on the evidence alone.
"Not only the defendants are on trial; British justice is on trial," he said.

A federal appeals court on Monday temporarily halted plans by companies in New Mexico and Missouri to begin slaughtering horses, continuing on-again, off-again efforts to resume domestic equine slaughter two years after Congress lifted a ban on the practice.
The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver issued a temporary injunction barring the Department of Agriculture from inspecting the plants, which were gearing up to open in the coming days after a federal judge in Albuquerque on Friday dismissed a lawsuit by The Humane Society of the United States. The Humane Society and other animal protection groups alleged the department failed to conduct proper environmental studies when it issued permits to the slaughterhouses.
The Humane Society filed an immediate appeal and won an emergency injunction.
"Horse slaughter is a predatory, inhumane business, and we are pleased to win another round in the courts to block killing of these animals on American soil for export to Italy and Japan," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. "Meanwhile, we are redoubling our efforts in Congress to secure a permanent ban on the slaughter of our horses throughout North America."
Blair Dunn, who represents Valley Meat Co. of Roswell, N.M., and Rains Natural Meats of Gallatin, Mo., emphasized the order was temporary.

The question of how the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen died has endured since his tomb was first discovered in 1922, but with a little bit of good fortune and a lot of great science, a team of researchers appears to have finally solved the mystery.
Over the years, scientists have puzzled over King Tut's life and death. It's generally thought that he was a sheltered young king, protected from potential dangers by his elders, that he may have suffered from epilepsy, and he died as a result of a broken leg (possibly due to suffering a fall during a seizure). Research in the '60s even proposed that he was the victim of a brutal assassination. However, more recent evidence tells a very different story. The extensive injuries suffered by the boy king just before he died - including crushed ribs, a shattered pelvis and a broken leg, as well as the mummy's missing heart - point to a more active life, and it was very likely a chariot accident that ultimately caused his death.
The idea that he died in a chariot accident, possibly while out hunting or maybe even during a joy-ride, has been around for a few years now. The most recent findings, though, came from a few fortunate discoveries. Dr. Chris Naunton, the director of the Egypt Exploration Society, found mention in Howard Carter's original notes that Tut's body had been burned, and Liverpool University anthropologist Dr. Robert Connolly discovered a strip of Tut's skin in his collection. Examination of the skin under an electron microscope confirmed the charring, and chemical analysis showed that a reaction caused by the combination of embalming oils, the linens that wrapped him and oxygen caused Tut's body to spontaneously combust after it was sealed away in its sarcophagus.
Adding scientists from the Cranfield Forensic Institute to the team, a 'virtual autopsy' was performed on Tut's mummy, giving the team a good look at all the injuries he'd sustained before his death.

Animal activists are combing a forest in eastern China for more than 1,000 kittens rescued from a meat supplier only to be let loose by local authorities, an organiser said Monday.
Animal protection volunteers and local police intercepted a truck "filled with cats" destined for dinner plates last week, said an activist surnamed Ni from the Wuxi Small Animal Protection Association in eastern Jiangsu province.
But local government officials released the felines -- some as young as four months old -- into a nearby mountain forest to fend for themselves, Ni said.
Volunteers are now scouring the hillsides with cages in an attempt to capture the cats, and hope to put those found up for adoption, Ni said, adding that more than 50 have been retrieved in the last week.
The state-run Beijing Youth Daily said Sunday that authorities seized the cats because the lorry owner did not have the correct documents, but decided to release the animals into the wild as there was no source of funds to have them put down.

A young man with a microphone stepped onto a small stage and cawed like a crow. Minutes later, hundreds of noisy birds circled above him, perched on trees and sat on roof tops, astounding the crowd at a show called the "crow conference".
Gautam Sapkota, fondly known in Nepal as "charidada" or "bird brother", then made another series of sounds. The crows fell silent before disappearing into the grey sky before dusk.
"I told them to come, sit, be quiet and fly away," said Sapkota, a 30-year-old school dropout who has been doing "crow shows" at schools since 2005 to entertain students and raise awareness about nature and the conservation of birds.
He says he can imitate the sounds of 251 kinds of birds and hopes for recognition of his talents from Guinness World Records. He plans to broaden his conservation message with an album that remixes Nepali songs with the sound of a crane.
