Froma Harrop: Dracula Style (Creators Syndicate)
Fashion writers shifting and swerving through constant change still freeze in the vampire's presence. Some cultural figures, like Audrey, like Cary, like Jackie, create a signature look defying the march of trends. Dracula is one such fashion icon for the ages.
Lenore Skenazy: Sweating Out the Economy (Creators Synndicate)
Dear Lenore (publicists write to me because I have a blog and they want free publicity): I'm working with a new company, Fresh Body, and one of their best sellers? Fresh Breasts! Boob sweat, or "swoobs" as we like to call it, is a problem most women are all too familiar with, which is why we needed a solution - and finally, we have one.
Henry Rollins: The Cost of Being Human (LA Weekly)
The pain and misery that Congress and these other mopes have put America through for the last several weeks cannot go unanswered. Humans are infinitely problematic, constantly breaking down, exceptionally difficult to maintain, saggy squishes who breed like field mice. Deal with it.
Henry Rollins' Tribute to Lou Reed (LA Weekly)
Fanatics. Like many of you, I saw the news of Lou Reed's passing. When I saw the headline, it felt like someone had hit me. I know that at some point everyone has to go, but it's never easy.
David Bruce: Wise Up! Parties (Athens News)
President and Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt faced an unusual problem when they were in the White House -- prostitutes kept trying to crash White House parties. Among Mrs. Roosevelt's jobs was making that they did not succeed.
Shining Time Station is an American children's television series co-created by Britt Allcroft and Rick Siggelkow. The series was produced by The Britt Allcroft Company and Quality Family Entertainment in New York for New York City PBS Station WNET, and was filmed first in New York City and then in Toronto. It incorporated sequences from the British TV show Thomas & Friends. The series aired on PBS from January 1989 to June 1993, but aired re-runs until 1997 (1998 for some PBS affiliates).
After the success of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends in the United Kingdom, Britt Allcroft and her production company teamed up with PBS Station WNET in New York to produce and distribute the sitcom-esque Shining Time Station. Every episode would include a couple of episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. The series starred Ringo Starr, George Carlin, Didi Conn, Brian O'Connor, The Flexitoon Puppets, and Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. Ringo Starr, who had already been providing the voice of the storyteller for the British series, agreed to extend the role to include the on-screen character Mr. Conductor in Shining Time Station. He later left the show and was replaced by George Carlin.

I'm going to guess (never look up the trivia answers, either I know it or I don't) that George Carlin replaced Ringo Starr in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Don't remember the name of the character though.

China's superstar pianist Lang Lang became a United Nations Messenger of Peace on Monday, a role he called more important than his music because it can help improve the lives of children around the world through education.
Being a Messenger of Peace is the highest honor bestowed by a U.N. chief on accomplished individuals in any field.
He joins 11 other prominent world figures who advocate on behalf of the United Nations as Messengers of Peace, including Stevie Wonder, Michael Douglas, George Clooney, Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, primatologist Jane Goodall and conductor Daniel Barenboim.
Lang Lang, 31, who has been a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. children's agency, UNICEF, for 10 years, said it is "a great honor" to be the first Messenger of Peace from China.

Kenny Rogers, Bobby Bare and the late "Cowboy" Jack Clement - three men whose influence still ripples across the surface of modern music - are now members of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The three were saluted by stars Garth Brooks, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Barry Gibb, John Prine and others during a ceremony Sunday at the newly expanded Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Bare scored dozens of hits like "Dee-troit City" and "How I Got to Memphis," mining the work of left-of-center Nashville songwriters like Tom T. Hall, Kris Kristofferson and Shel Silverstein. Though he was never really part of the so-called outlaw movement in country music, he was close friends with many artists who were and his insistence on controlling his own musical choices was an inspiration for others like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.
"He has been responsible for a lot of things that have happened in the country music business," singer John Anderson said. "I remember one day I was talking to my old friend Waylon, and I asked Waylon, 'Man, what caused you to pack up and move to Nashville?' He said, 'Hoss, Bobby Bare had a whole lot to do with it.'"
Known also for his sense of humor, the 78-year-old Bare answered characteristically when asked what being inducted means: "It means that I will forever be referred to as a hall of famer. It sounds real good."
Short story great Alice Munro celebrated her recent Nobel Prize in literature win with fellow acclaimed author Margaret Atwood over the weekend.
Munro has been keeping a low profile since landing the Nobel earlier this month, and the Swedish Academy says she won't be travelling to Stockholm to collect her prize in December because of poor health.
But on Sunday, Atwood took to her Twitter account to post two photos of herself with the 82-year-old Munro in Victoria, B.C.
In the first photo, the two are sitting beside each other on a couch in a hotel room with their arms around each other and smiling for the camera.
The second photo is in the same setting and shows each of them holding filled champagne glasses.

The Ohio State University marching band has made headlines with its second straight half-time show performance, following up a moon-walking Michael Jackson tribute with formations that brought a giant Harry Potter and Superman to the field.
On Oct. 19, the marching band that likes to call itself "The Best Damn Band in the Land" performed The Way You Make Me Feel while marching into the shape of the late star, then gliding him into the splits. Their performances of some of Jackson's other hits featured a selection of visual tributes including album cover art and the letters B-A-D.
It was a tough act to follow, but Ohio State marched back onto the field this Saturday at haf-time during a game against Penn State, and this time they brought Harry Potter and Superman.
The nearly nine minute-long video of their most recent performance has been viewed more than 2.4 million times on YouTube since Oct. 26. In it, Superman flies up to a toppling building, pushing it back into place, and Harry Potter catches the Snitch while riding his broom. The show also featured a T-Rex and an Ohio State battleship sinking their opponents, Michigan State.
The first trial in the phone-hacking scandal that sank Rupert Murdoch's News of the World opened Monday with the tycoon's key aide Rebekah Brooks in the dock alongside the British prime minister's former media chief Andy Coulson.
The two former editors of the tabloid are among eight defendants facing a jury for the first time over the scandal that sent shockwaves through British politics.
Flame-haired Brooks, 45, arrived at the Old Bailey court in London to a storm of photographers' flashes, accompanied by her racehorse trainer husband Charlie, who is also on trial.
Brooks -- who rose from secretary to editor and became one of Murdoch's closest confidantes -- is charged with phone hacking, conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office, and perverting the course of justice.
The scandal erupted in July 2011 with revelations that the News of the World had hacked the mobile phone voicemails of Milly Dowler, a missing 13-year-old girl who was later found murdered.

A fifth grader in a school uniform sat in a youth courtroom last week and pleaded guilty to hacking websites of organizations including the Montreal police and the Quebec Institute of Public Health, saying he was egged on by the promise of video games.
QMI Agency reported the 12-year-old Montreal boy, whose name is protected by a publication ban, gave information from hacked websites to the hacktivist group Anonymous in 2012. He didn't have political motivations, his lawyer told the court, but Anonymous gave him video games for his information in illicit trades.
The boy, who arrived in court with his dad on Thursday, is said to have caused about $60,000 in damage hacking several websites, including Canadian government sites and the Chilean government,QMI Agency reported. He used hacks that denied service to visitors, changed home pages and accessed server data, sharing his techniques with others.
Another young Montreal hacker known as Mafiaboy who attacked websites including CNN, Amazon and Yahoo! in 2000, when he was 15, received an eight-month sentence in youth detention. Eight years later, the young man behind the username Mafiaboy, Michael Calce, published a book about his crimes. He told ITBusiness.ca he was working as a security consultant, trying to turn the skills he used in those malicious attacks into a force for online protection.

The famed La Scala opera house says Daniel Barenboim will leave the post of musical director at the end of 2014, two years before his contract expires.
Barenboim first joined La Scala with the unofficial title of principal guest conductor in 2006 before becoming musical director in December 2011.
General manager Stephane Lissner informed unions of the musical director's departure plans Monday, noting Barenboim's many other projects, including one to establish an academy for Israeli and Palestinian musicians.
Lissner himself is leaving for the Paris Opera next September, turning over the reins to Alexander Pereira, an Austrian who has indicated he would like an Italian to be the next musical director.

Supporters of a Canadian marijuana activist being held in a U.S. prison are being called on to pressure the government to bring him home, with the wife of "Prince of Pot" Marc Emery urging supporters to inundate the Ministry of Public Safety with phone calls asking for the government to approve an idle transfer request.
Jodie Emery will stand in the heart of enemy territory on Tuesday and politely ask that the Canadian government sign the paperwork that will allow her husband to serve the remainder of his sentence on Canadian soil. She will be backed by NDP MP Libby Davis, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and Liberal Public Safety Critic Wayne Easter.
Jodie Emery has been campaigning for her husband's return to Canada since he was first extradited to the U.S. in 2010 after receiving a five-year sentence for selling marijuana seeds through the mail. It has been three years without movement, but hopes were raised earlier this year when the U.S. government approved the transfer request, leaving it to its Canadian counterparts to finalize the paperwork.
Yet there's been no word from Public Safety Minister Steve Blaney and no indication that such a request will be approved, despite previous rebuke for ignoring transfer requests.

Over one million furious campaigners have signed a petition demanding justice after three men accused of brutally gang raping a Kenyan schoolgirl were ordered to cut grass as punishment.
The ferocious attack on the teenage girl and lack of action against those who carried it out has sparked outrage in the country.
The 16-year-old, known by the pseudonym Liz, was reportedly attacked, beaten and then raped by six men as she returned from her grandfather's funeral in western Kenya in June, before the gang dumped her, bleeding and unconscious, in a deep sewage ditch.
She is now wheelchair-bound with a broken back, caused either by the beating or by being hurled down into the pit, and also suffered serious internal injuries from the rape.

The governors of Pacific coastal U.S. states and a Canadian province official on Monday vowed to collectively combat climate change by coordinating polices that place a price on greenhouse gas pollution and mandating the use of cleaner-burning fuels.
The governors of California, Oregon, Washington and the environment minister of British Columbia, Mary Polak, gathered in San Francisco to commit to working together to coordinate efforts with the hope of stimulating a clean-energy economy in a region with a combined gross domestic product of $2.8 trillion.
California and British Columbia already have placed a price on greenhouse gas emissions - through cap-and-trade and a carbon tax, respectively - and have also already adopted clean fuel standards.
Under terms of the agreement announced Monday, Oregon and Washington's governors are committing their states to move forward with similar policies, even though the legislatures of both states have denied previous attempts to adopt cap-and-trade.

Pediatricians and child abuse agencies should step in when parents' religious beliefs keep kids from getting necessary medical care, doctors said Monday.
In a policy statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Bioethics also said states should repeal any exemptions to child abuse and neglect laws.
Those exemptions mean some states don't always consider parents negligent if they forgo medical treatment for a child because of their religious beliefs.
Finally, the committee said public healthcare funding should not be used for religious or spiritual healing.
That would mean Medicare and Medicaid would no longer cover services at Christian Science sanatoriums, for instance. People with government-funded insurance could still get care at hospitals run by religious groups.
