• Although they were born in the United States and were American citizens, during World War II Yoshiko Uchida and Keiko (“Kay”) Uchida, her sister, were interned at the American concentration camp at Topaz, Utah, because of their Japanese ancestry. Before being moved to Topaz, they were first forced to live in a horse stall that had been painted so hurriedly by the United States soldiers that young Yoshiko could see the corpses of spiders and other bugs under the whitewash. Kay became ill and was forced to stay in bed and use a large tin can when she needed to go to the bathroom. She worried that everyone would hear what she was doing — the horse stall “apartments” were not conducive to privacy. Therefore, while Kay used the can, Yoshiko rustled newspapers and made a lot of noise to cover up the bathroom noises that her sister was making.
• On The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mel Cooley, played by Richard Deacon, was always being insulted by Buddy Sorrell, played by Morey Amsterdam. This got to Mr. Deacon after a while, so he talked to series creator Carl Reiner and asked him to write a response for his character to give to Buddy. Mr. Reiner tried a few ideas, but none seemed to work, so he asked Mr. Deacon what his reaction was to Buddy. Mr. Deacon answered “Yecch!” and that became his character’s response to Buddy.
• Elie Wiesel, author of Night, became an American citizen partly as a result of an accident. While crossing Times Square, he was hit by a taxi and forced to use a wheelchair for a year. His French visa was about to expire, and to renew it he needed to go to France, something that was difficult for him to do because of his injury. An American immigration official suggested that he solve the program by becoming an American citizen, and Mr. Wiesel did exactly that.
• When Jack Gantos, author of the Newbery Honor book Joey Pigza Loses Control, was doing time in prison for smuggling and selling drugs, he faced a problem. Prison guards would not allow prisoners to keep journals. To solve that problem, Mr. Gantos used a copy of Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov as his journal. He wrote in between the printed lines of the book.
Procrastination
• Richard P. Feynman, a Noble Prize winner in 1965, almost did not write the paper that won him the prize. Mr. Feynman preferred to talk rather than write, and his non-autobiographical books tend to be transcriptions of his lectures or notes for his lectures. While he was working on describing quantum processes, he invented what are known as “Feynman Diagrams.” The diagrams became popular quickly, but Mr. Feynman waited a year to write a technical paper describing his diagrams. However, he did finally write “Space-Time Approach to Quantum Electrodynamics” because he stayed at the home of his friends Bert and Mulaika Corben. Mulaika was both liberated and forceful, and she locked him in a room until he had finished writing the paper.
• Will Hobbs, author of such children’s books as Bearstone, has a unique way of getting himself to write when he is procrastinating too much. He winds up a toy pterodactyl and forces himself to begin writing before the pterodactyl stops walking.
The only state in New England that does not border the Atlantic Ocean, it was admitted to the newly established United States as the fourteenth state in 1791. What is the name of this state?
Vermont is a northeastern state in the New England region of the United States. It borders the states of Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east, and New York to the west, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. Vermont is the only state in New England that does not border the Atlantic Ocean. Vermont is the second-least-populated U.S. state and the sixth-smallest by area of the 50 U.S. states. The state capital is Montpelier, the least-populous state capital in the United States. The most-populous city, Burlington, is the least-populous city to be the most-populous city in a state.
Vermont was admitted to the newly established United States as the fourteenth state in 1791. Vermont is one of the four U.S. states that were previously sovereign states (along with Texas, California, and Hawaii).

Our son arrived from SF Saturday afternoon, and the ensuing visit was just the balm I needed. I watched him leave late Sunday afternoon, and felt that pang of sadness that lodges in my gut whenever one of my adult children leave. Maybe that’s a mom thing.
The wind has been screaming all night; at least it’s not hot, and PG&E didn’t turn off our electricity. Oy, what a year.

Don’t you know, happiness is a thing called Joe. Don’t believe us, just ask Cher.
The legendary entertainer is throwing her considerable clout behind Joe Biden’s run for the presidency with the release of a new single, "Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe"
The Academy Award and Grammy winner closed Sunday night's I Will Vote concert with a performance of "Happiness" ahead of its official release on Monday, a rep tells Billboard.
The number was originally composed by Harold Arlen for the 1943 film musical Cabin in the Sky, earning an Oscar nomination for best original song.
John Legend, Pink and Andra Day also performed at the fundraising concert, in support of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Andrew Scott and Ian McKellen were among acting winners as Britain's Laurence Olivier Awards celebrated the best of the London stage in bittersweet fashion Sunday night — most U.K. theaters remain closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Stage curtains came down when Britain went into lockdown in March, and the virus also scuttled the planned springtime ceremony for Britain's leading awards for theater, opera and dance. Instead the trophies were bestowed during a pre-recorded event streamed online and shown on British TV.
Fleabag star Scott was named best actor in a play for his turn as a narcissistic actor in Noel Coward's Present Laughter. Sharon D. Clarke won the best actress prize for her performance as an American matriarch in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell won directing award for the same production, which featured Black actors in the central roles of the struggling Loman family.
McKellen won a special Olivier — his seventh — for his one-man 80th birthday tour of the U.K., staged before the pandemic as a fundraiser for regional theaters. Choreographer Matthew Bourne won a record ninth Olivier, alongside collaborator Stephen Mears, for his fleet-footed work on Mary Poppins.
Tom Stoppard's Leopoldstadt, which addresses history and the Holocaust through the story of a Viennese Jewish family, was named best new play. The best musical trophy went to Dear Evan Hansen.
The family of a Black man who died after a car chase with deputies accompanied by a reality television camera crew filed a lawsuit against Williamson County, Texas, where a sheriff is facing tampering charges in the case.
The family of Javier Ambler filed suit Sunday under the state’s Wrongful Death Act, alleging that sheriff’s deputies engaged in a reckless chase of Ambler to make entertaining television for “Live PD,” the lawsuit said.
On March 28, 2019, two deputies in different squad cars engaged in a chase of Ambler for allegedly failing to dim his headlights. A “Live PD” camera crew who was with one of the deputies began filming the chase, according to the lawsuit.
Deputies followed Ambler for over 20 minutes, ending in the city of Austin where Ambler was restrained and tased at least three times. Ambler told the deputies that he could not breathe and that he had a heart condition, body camera footage released by Austin police and seen by NBC News showed.
His manner of death has been declared a homicide, according to a custodial death report filed with the Texas Attorney General’s Office. Ambler died of congestive heart failure and hypertensive cardiovascular disease associated with morbid obesity, in combination with forcible restraint, the report said.
The billionaire bond investor Bill Gross and his tech-entrepreneur neighbor are embroiled in a legal battle over a $1 million sculpture.
According to a report from the Los Angeles Times' Laurence Darmiento, the Pimco founder and his partner, the former professional tennis player Amy Schwartz, have been accused by their neighbor Mark Towfiq of harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The disagreement stems from a 22-foot-long sculpture on Gross' property in Laguna Beach, California. The sculpture, created by the artist Dale Chihuly, consists of dozens of blue glass stems that reach nearly 10 feet high. It was installed by Gross as a gift to Schwartz in 2019 and cost $1 million, according to the Times.
But after the sculpture sustained thousands of dollars in damage, Gross and Schwartz installed netting around it to protect it from the elements, which Towfiq and his wife said blocked their view. The couple filed a complaint with the city of Laguna Beach, which led to the city inspecting the property and informing Gross that he lacked the proper permits, the Times reported.
The issue has now sparked a bitter quarrel between the neighbors. According to the Times, Towfiq and his wife allege that Gross and Schwartz have been blaring the "Gilligan's Island" theme song, among other music, at all hours of the day and night, including turning the music on remotely when they're not at home, in attempt to get them to drop the issue.
Donald Trump’s Republican party has become more illiberal and retreated from upholding democratic norms in recent years, a study has found, with its rhetoric shifting closer that of authoritarian parties ruling in Turkey, Hungary, Poland and India.
The research by Sweden-based V-Dem Institute highlights what it calls a “global trend” where “the median governing party in democracies has become more illiberal in recent decades”.
The study examined the extent of commitment to democratic norms that a party exhibits before an election, and found that more parties across the world are involved in the demonisation of political opponents, encouragement of political violence, disrespect for fundamental minority rights and lower commitment to political pluralism.
According to the study, in the last 20 years when “illiberal rhetoric" and "positioning on economic policy” is considered, the Republican Party has “not changed left-right placement but moved strongly in an illiberal direction.”
Researchers said the Republicans are now more similar to autocratic ruling parties such as the Turkish AKP and Fidesz in Hungary, than to typical centre-right governing parties in Western democracies such as the Conservatives in the UK or the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany.
The head of an advisory council on federal pay resigned from his post Monday in protest over President Donald Trump (R-Corrupt)'s recent executive order stripping civil service protections from key federal workers.
"I have concluded that as a matter of conscience, I can no longer serve him or his Administration," Federal Salary Council Chair Ron Sanders, a Trump appointee, wrote in his resignation letter to the director of the Personnel Executive Office of the President, the text of which was obtained by POLITICO.
"[I]t is clear that its stated purpose notwithstanding, the Executive Order is nothing more than a smokescreen for what is clearly an attempt to require the political loyalty of those who advise the President, or failing that, to enable their removal with little if any due process," he wrote.
Trump named Sanders, who also served under the Bush administration, to the position in December 2017. The advisory group is responsible for providing recommendations to the White House on how best to tailor federal pay depending on regional costs of living.
Sanders, who described himself as a lifelong Republican, said he cannot be part of an administration that seeks "to replace apolitical expertise with political obeisance. Career Federal employees are legally and duty-bound to be nonpartisan; they take an oath to preserve and protect our Constitution and the rule of law…not to be loyal to a particular President or Administration," he wrote.
Female passengers flying from Qatar were subjected to invasive searches after a premature baby was found abandoned in an airport bathroom, in an incident labelled "offensive" and "grossly inappropriate" by Australia's government.
Airport officials have not denied the incident, saying women passengers "were asked to assist" with inquiries to locate the mother of the baby, who they say is still alive.
Security agents escorted an undisclosed number of women -- including Australians -- from aircraft on the tarmac at Doha's international airport to ambulances, where they were examined for signs they had recently given birth.
"(Officials) were forcing women to undergo invasive body searches -- basically forced Pap smears," a source in Doha briefed on the incident told AFP, referring to an internal examination of the cervix.
The bulldozing of a sacred tree for Aboriginal people to clear land for a highway has sparked anger in Australia.
Protesters have long camped at the site in Victoria to defend culturally significant trees, including some where local Djab Wurrung women have traditionally gone to give birth.
But state authorities cut down the Djab Wurrung "directions tree" on Monday, the activists said.
In a deal last year, Aboriginal landowners negotiated with the Victorian government to save around a dozen of 250 "culturally significant" trees from destruction.
Among trees that will be protected are two "birthing" trees. These are centuries-old trees where women have also buried their placentas after giving birth, as part of a cultural tradition.
