David N. Wasserman: What Are the New Battleground States? (NY Times)
Can Hillary Clinton win the Republican strongholds Arizona and Georgia? At the moment, thanks to Donald J. Trump's self-destructive tendencies and both states' growing populations of professionals and nonwhites, it's possible.
Bert Stratton: Just Like Trump, I Avoided Paying Federal Taxes (NY Times)
Cleveland Heights, Ohio - I'm like Donald Trump, somewhat. We both inherited buildings from our fathers. I've kept my father's properties and bought a couple more buildings. For my first couple of years I had "loss carry-forwards." I lost money and paid no federal taxes. Some dads teach their sons fishing. My dad taught me to do taxes.
Andrew Tobias: How Much Damage Could A Trump Presidency Do?
Apart, that is, from the extraordinary damage he's already done - coarsening the public discourse and demeaning people; undermining confidence; retweeting white supremacists; stoking division, fear, and discontent; and just overall Debasing American Politics, as The Economist argues in its current cover story.

The words of which of the two candidates for president does the definition of sedition below describe? Will he ever be prosecuted when there is violence before and after the "rigged election?"
sedition--In law, sedition is overt conduct, such as speech and organization, that tends toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent (or resistance) to lawful authority. Sedition may include any commotion, though not aimed at direct and open violence against the laws.

My name is Marc Perkel and I have decided to announce that I will not comply with the so called "Patriot Act" laws requiring me to disclose information about my customers. If I receive a national security letter I will immediately photograph it, post it online everywhere I can, and then make a video of me burning it. I will then await my arrest. If you want to put me in jail then come get me mother fucker.

The Swedish Academy says it has given up trying to reach Bob Dylan, days after it awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature.
"Right now we are doing nothing. I have called and sent emails to his closest collaborator and received very friendly replies. For now, that is certainly enough," the academy's permanent secretary, Sara Danius, told state radio SR on Monday.
So far the American troubadour has responded with silence since he won the prize on Thursday.
"I am not at all worried," said Danius. "I think he will show up."
"If he doesn't want to come, he won't come. It will be a big party in any case and the honour belongs to him," said Danius.

On Monday, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History launched a fundraising campaign to restore what is widely considered its most popular artifact: a pair of ruby slippers from the film The Wizard of Oz. The institution is seeking $300,000 by Nov. 16 through a Kickstarter campaign called "Keep Them Ruby." More than 300 people have already pledged to donate.
Four pairs of slippers that Judy Garland wore in the 1939 film are known to have survived, plus an additional pair that the actress wore in screen tests. The Smithsonian acquired its pair in 1979 from donors whose names the institution has kept private.
According to a video for the fundraising campaign, light has caused the slippers to deteriorate. "They're really discolored. They've darkened. They've become opaque, and there's cracking," Richard Barden, the preservation services manager for the museum, says in the video. Without the restoration, he adds, "the slippers will slowly deteriorate, and we really don't know how quickly they'll go."
The museum said the conservators will "stabilize" areas of the shoes where threads have come loose, the sole has pulled away and paint has cracked.
The Motown Museum is planning a $50 million expansion to create space for interactive exhibits, a performance theater and recording studios at the Detroit tourist attraction, officials announced Monday.
The new space will be designed and built around the existing museum, which includes the Motown studio with its "Hitsville U.S.A." facade. Renderings released by the museum show a new facility behind the existing museum, with an entrance next to the existing studio.
Robin R. Terry, chairwoman and CEO of the Motown Museum, said in a statement that a goal of the project is to "inspire dreams and serve as an educational resource for global and local communities." The museum already is among Detroit's best-known tourist attractions.
The expanded museum "will allow us to narrate and celebrate on a much larger scale what the Motown legacy is recognized for: unmatched creative genius that transcends every barrier imaginable by bringing people together from all walks of life to share in that unmistakable Motown Sound," she said.
The Motown Museum is located in the house where record company founder Berry Gordy launched his cultural and commercial music empire. The label started in 1959 and scores of stars and hits were created before it decamped to California in 1972.

THX, the San Francisco-based company that was originally founded by George Lucas in 1983 to improve cinema sound for Return of the Jedi, has been acquired by gaming brand Razer for an undisclosed sum.
Under its new owner, the company, which was spun off from Lucasfilm in 2002, plans to maintain its work in cinemas, the home and mobile, while expanding into new areas of entertainment including virtual and augmented reality.
Per the agreement, THX's management and employees will remain with the company, which will operate as an independent entity.
While THX started in the theatrical arena, its quality assurance certification program has expanded to audio electronics, non-internet-connected speakers, TVs, projectors, automotive audio systems and live entertainment.
Moving forward, plans are to include immersive audio and high dynamic range, introduce programs such as headphone certification and, in the future, expand into augmented and virtual reality.
The planet's hot streak is crawling to a temporary end, but it's not over quite yet. September was the hottest such month on record, according to NASA, coming in at 0.91 degrees Celsius, or 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit, above average. This marks nearly a year straight of record heat, according to NASA, with 11 of the past 12 months ranking as the warmest on record.
September's record warmth assures that 2016 will be the warmest calendar year on record, taking over the top spot from 2015.
September only narrowly beat the previous warmest September, which occurred in 2014, making it a statistical tie, according to NASA.
According to a press release, September 2016's global average temperature was just 0.004 degrees Celsius, or 0.0072 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than September 2014.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which also keeps global temperature records, there have been 16 straight warmest months (September could become the 17th straight month of record warmth), which is unprecedented.

To the Republicans in the red "Can't Afford Katie" T-shirts, it's as if Donald Trump doesn't even exist.
These activists have been sprinting through Pennsylvania neighborhoods, talking to people about how bad Democrat Katie McGinty would be as a U.S. senator. Here to help save Republican Sen. Pat Toomey - and, more broadly, the party's control of the Senate - are employees and volunteers for Americans for Prosperity, the best-known group financed by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch.
Similar scenes are playing out in North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.
In addition to having nail-biting Senate races this year, those four states are some of the most important battlegrounds in the presidential race. Yet the Koch activists interacting with millions of people who could be Trump's most crucial voters aren't supposed to utter a word about him or Hillary Clinton, a Democrat they'd been preparing for years to attack.
The brothers and many of their wealthy donor friends who fund the political and policy groups known as the Koch network have no interest in backing Trump. In a television interview in April, Charles Koch called Clinton and Trump "terrible role models" and trashed Trump's "monstrous" proposal for a temporary ban of foreign Muslims entering the U.S.
Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, informally approached LionTree Advisors Chief Executive Aryeh Bourkoff about setting up a Trump TV network after the U.S. presidential election, but the investment bank does not want to be involved, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Kushner contacted Bourkoff, one of the media industry's top dealmakers, in the past few months, but there have been no further conversations, the source said on Monday. The source asked not to be identified because the discussions were private.
Kushner, the owner of the weekly New York Observer newspaper, is married to Trump's daughter Ivanka.
To set up a television network, Trump would have to negotiate with cable and satellite carriers, which can be an arduous task. It can then take years to turn a profit. Fox News Channel, the most-watched U.S. cable network, took five years to be profitable.
It might be easier and less expensive for Trump to launch an online streaming service.

Silicon Valley heavyweight Peter Thiel (R-Repeal the 19th Amendment) will give $1.25 million as his first donation in support of Donald Trump's campaign after endorsing the U.S. Republican presidential candidate earlier this year, a spokesman for the investor said on Sunday.
The donation will be made through a combination of political action committee donations and money directly to the campaign, the spokesman said. So far, billionaire Thiel has been the most prominent supporter of Trump from the country's technology hub.
A co-founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook Inc who sits on that company's board of directors, Thiel offered a full endorsement of Trump while speaking at the Republic National Convention in July.
Thiel has not made any donations to the campaign of Trump's opponent in the Nov. 8 election, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, the spokesman said.
Greenland's government urged the United States and Denmark on Monday to clean up 30 rusting Cold War-era U.S. military installations there, saying it was losing patience over risks of radioactive and chemical waste.
The island, which has wide powers of self-rule within Denmark, said Copenhagen had a responsibility for the abandoned U.S. military locations on its territory.
"In Greenland, there are more than 30 abandoned American military installations where the environmental and health implications of abandoned waste have not been established," its government said in a statement.
"Having waited in many cases more than 70 years for the polluter to take care of cleaning up or paying for such operations, Greenland is losing patience with changing Danish governments' vague responses," it said.
In August, a scientific study said global warming might in future decades unlock radioactive waste stored at Camp Century, an abandoned military camp built in 1959 deep under Greenland's ice sheet.
