Frank Bruni: The Wilds of Education (NY Times)
WHEN it comes to bullying, to sexual assault, to gun violence, we want and need our schools to be as safe as possible. But when it comes to learning, shouldn't they be dangerous?
Obituary: RAYMOND ALAN "BIG AL" BROWNLEY (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
Big Al was known for his timeless words of wisdom, including "Life is hard; but it's harder if you're stupid" and "Don't be a jackass." He had a life-long ménage a trois with his homemade chili and Gas-X. He had a great fondness for sardines on crackers, stuffed cabbage (which he lovingly called hunky hand grenades), making turtle soup, and eating BLTs. And his famous holiday eggnog had enough whiskey to grow hair on your chest.
Robert Evans, Anonymous: 7 Horrifying Lessons Learned Directing a Porno (Cracked)
We think we have a rough idea of how porn movies work: actors shoot dozens of films a week, everyone's on drugs all the time, this music plays constantly, etc. We've gone deeper (giggle) into the world of porn with this piece about life as a male porn star. But that man was controlling the dick -- who controls the man who controls the dick?

Triathlete Heather Hedrick often trains on cold, windy Illinois roads during the winter. When she first started training seriously, the guys she trained with saw her shivering, so they told her, "Heather, the wind is your friend. The wind will make you strong." After a while, whenever she trained on a cold, windy Illinois road, she would tell herself, "The wind is my friend. The wind will make me strong."
Camp David is the country retreat of the President of the United States. It is located in wooded hills about 62 miles (100 km) north-northwest of Washington, D.C., in Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont, Maryland. It is officially known as Naval Support Facility Thurmont and is technically a military installation; staffing is primarily provided by the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps.
First known as Hi-Catoctin, Camp David was originally built as a camp for federal government agents and their families by the WPA. Construction started in 1935, and was completed in 1938. In 1942, it was converted to a presidential retreat by Franklin D. Roosevelt and renamed "Shangri-La" (for the fictional Himalayan paradise). Camp David received its present name from Dwight D. Eisenhower, in honor of his father and grandson, both named David.

Dale of Diamond Springs, Norfallcali said:
Camp David, now. Originally named Shangri-La, built by the WPA as one of FDR's projects. Ken Burns' "The Roosevelt's" was epic. We need another WPA today to save the humanity of this orb. Franklin and Eleanor were the two greatest people of the 20th Century. I could never figure out why they named it Camp David Eisenhower. He is a totally vacuous schlub.
Randall responded:
Man, you got me.
I haven't a clue.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

Hundreds of suburban Denver high school students missed school again Monday as teachers shut down two high schools by calling in sick amid a controversy over proposed changes to an Advanced Placement history class and changes to their pay.
Classes were canceled at Golden and Jefferson high schools after 81 percent and 70 percent of teachers called in sick respectively. Some students who had the day off hit the street to protest against a proposal from the board's new conservative majority to review the history course to make sure it promotes patriotism and doesn't condone social disorder.
At Jefferson High School in Edgewater, about 30 students marched to busy Wadsworth Boulevard and protested in front of the school holding signs such as "We have a right to know history."
The action follows large student walkouts last week over the proposal, which the school board is scheduled to discuss at its meeting Thursday. The waves of protest began after a sickout at two other high schools on Sept. 19 the day after the school board discussed the history proposal as well as backed a plan to link teacher raises to their evaluations. Teachers say that evaluation system is flawed.

Ian Neale grows huge vegetables. Last year, the 70-year-old pensioner grew two record-breaking vegetables in his Langstone, south Wales, garden.
A swede (also known as a rutabaga, Swedish turnip or yellow turnip) weighed in at 54kg, making it the largest in the world, and a carrot weight 8.35kg, the largest ever grown in Britain.
When asked to share his gardening secrets, all he offered was this boring dose of reality: "Don't bother to go on holiday."
We're assuming he shared a few more secrets with one famous fan. In 2011, Snoop Dogg congratulated Neale on his success - and asked for some vegetation tips in exchange for free tickets to his show.
"We gave him some tips. There's a chemical on the market that's natural and encourages a better root system," said Neale, who took him up on the offer and went to Snoop Dogg's show.

A building made famous by the hit television series "Corner Gas" about small-town Saskatchewan life burned to the ground on Sunday night.
Grant Clarke, mayor of the small town of Rouleau where the former CTV comedy was filmed, said hundreds of people watched as flames engulfed the building.
The structure was used as the local supermarket Foo Mar T in the show that featured the fictional town of Dog River.
There was no word on the cause, although the RCMP said they did not consider the blaze suspicious.
Documents released by the U.S. government show it views an executive order issued in 1981 as the basis of most of the National Security Agency's surveillance activities, the American Civil Liberties Union said on Monday.
The NSA relied on Executive Order 12333 more than it did on two other laws that have been the focus of public debate following the leaks exposing U.S. surveillance programs by former agency contractor Edward Snowden, according to the papers released by the ACLU.
The ACLU obtained the documents after filing a lawsuit last year seeking information in connection with the order, which it said the NSA was using to collect vast amounts of data worldwide, "inevitably" including communications of U.S. citizens.
The order, signed in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan (R-Still Orange), was intended to give the government broad authority over surveillance of international targets.
One of the documents obtained was a 2007 NSA manual citing the executive order as "the primary source of NSA's foreign intelligence-gathering authority."

A former FBI agent pleaded guilty Monday to charges that he derailed an investigation into military contract fraud by making a suspect appear to be a key counterintelligence source.
Retired agent Robert Lustyik Jr. pleaded guilty to 11 federal charges of fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges, said Lustyik's attorney, Raymond Mansolillo.
Lustyik's trial was scheduled to start Monday in federal court, but Mansolillo said his client pleaded guilty for personal and family reasons.
Lustyik, 52, wouldn't accept a plea deal because he didn't want to implicate anyone else, Mansolillo said. No sentencing date has been scheduled.
Federal prosecutors say Lustyik agreed to derail a Utah-based investigation into a company started by former soldiers. The company was accused of using insider information to win $54 million in bloated government contracts to supply Afghan troops.

A Republican congressman from Colorado was not trying to undermine President Barack Obama's military actions in the Middle East by urging generals who disagreed with the president to resign "in a blaze of glory," a spokesman said Monday.
U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn made the remarks last week in response to a question at a small gathering in Colorado Springs. One man urged Lamborn to support generals given "the Muslim Brotherhood in the White House" - a comparison of the president to the Islamic group that briefly ran Egypt until this year's coup.
"A lot of us are talking to the generals behind the scenes, saying, 'Hey, if you disagree with the policy the White House has given you, let's have a resignation,'" Lamborn said. "You know, let's have a public resignation, and state your protest, and go out in a blaze of glory."
The remarks, made as the military stepped up its campaign against the Islamic State militant group that has seized parts of Syria and Iraq, drew quick condemnation from Democrats and others when a recording circulated late last week.
Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Irv Halter, the Democrat challenging Lamborn in November, said it was "inappropriate for Rep. Lamborn to politicize the military for his own gain."

An Israeli-owned container ship that was blocked from unloading its cargo at the Port of Oakland by pro-Palestinian protesters over the weekend was headed to Los Angeles on Monday, according to a ship-tracking website.
The Zim Shanghai left Oakland with its cargo still onboard on Sunday evening, according to the website marinetraffic.com. It was expected to arrive in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Some 200 people angry over Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas rocket salvoes staged a protest of the Zim Shanghai at the Port of Oakland on Saturday morning and again that afternoon.
Members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, saying they were threatened physically and their vehicles blocked as they tried to report to work, refused to unload the ship.

The judge overseeing Detroit's bankruptcy refused Monday to stop the city from shutting off water if people can't pay their bill, saying there's no right to water and the law doesn't give him the power to keep the taps open anyway.
Judge Steven Rhodes gave critics of the shutoffs a two-day hearing last week. He said their arguments were "interesting and creative" but couldn't trump the legal standard under bankruptcy law or constitutional law - or the potential harm to Detroit's perilous finances.
"It cannot be doubted that water is a necessary ingredient to sustaining life," said Rhodes, but that doesn't mean "there is an enforceable right to free and affordable water."
The city stopped shutoffs in July for more than 30 days after Rhodes said they were causing anger and bad publicity. Protesters marched, and even the United Nations criticized Detroit.

The world populations of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles fell overall by 52 percent between 1970 and 2010, far faster than previously thought, the World Wildlife Fund said on Tuesday.
The conservation group's Living Planet Report, published every two years, said humankind's demands were now 50 percent more than nature can bear, with trees being felled, groundwater pumped and carbon dioxide emitted faster than Earth can recover.
The report's finding on the populations of vertebrate wildlife found that the biggest declines were in tropical regions, especially Latin America. The WWF's so-called "Living Planet Index" is based on trends in 10,380 populations of 3,038 mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian and fish species.
The average 52 percent decline was much bigger than previously reported, partly because earlier studies had relied more on readily available information from North America and Europe, WWF said. The same report two years ago put the decline at 28 percent between 1970 and 2008.
The worst decline was among populations of freshwater species, which fell by 76 percent over the four decades to 2010, while marine and terrestrial numbers both fell by 39 percent.

Pro football pays the bills in prime-time television.
NBC's "Sunday Night Football" charges $627,300 for a 30-second advertisement, more than any other program in prime-time broadcast television, according to a survey by Advertising Age. On its heels is CBS' new Thursday night football telecast, being shown this fall for the first time, at $483,333.
Television's top-rated comedy, "The Big Bang Theory," is the scripted show with the priciest ads, at $344,827, Advertising Age said.
Otherwise, ad prices don't always mesh with the Nielsen company's measurements of which programs get the biggest audience. That's because advertisers pay a premium to reach a younger audience
For instance, CBS' "NCIS" is often television's most-watched scripted show each week, certainly the most popular drama. But with an ad price of $170,948, it didn't make the top 10 of Advertising Age's most expensive shows in which to buy commercial time.
