Photographer Nancy Crampton took a series of portraits of famous authors. She wanted to take a portrait of Philip Roth on a rural road, and they went from road from road as she tried to find exactly the right setting. Eventually, Mr. Roth grew tired of this and said to her, "Nancy, the road didn't write the book."
He has appeared in more films than any other Disney character, and is the most published comic book character in the world outside of the superhero genre. What is the name of this Disney cartoon character?
Donald Duck is a cartoon character created in 1934, at Walt Disney Productions. Donald is an anthropomorphic white duck with a yellow-orange bill, legs, and feet. He typically wears a sailor shirt and cap with a black or red bow tie. Donald is most famous for his semi-intelligible speech and his mischievous and temperamental personality. Along with his friend Mickey Mouse, Donald is one of the most popular Disney characters and was included in TV Guide's list of the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all time in 2002. He has appeared in more films than any other Disney character, and is the most published comic book character in the world outside of the superhero genre.

I'm going to skip Mickey and guess Donald Duck, mainly because when I was a
kid, my brother and I had lots of Donald Duck comic books, but not Mickey
Mouse. I think it was something about the 3 nephews and Uncle Scrooge McDuck
that made for better comic book material. Doing swan dives into piles of
gold coins is just the kind of image that sticks in the mind, ya know?
Dale of Coolin Diamond Springs, Norcali answered:
Fucking Donald Duck! He has always had total respect from me since I was a little twerp! I still respect him even though I still hate all things Disney.
This might be true in the case of Lois the Lascivious Dipsomaniac!
Lady Of The Lake Lois In Oregon replied:
What is it about ducks? They are so damn cute! Waddling about, their little bills with that perpetually sweet smile. Except for Donald, who is a raging sociopath and icon of mindless destruction. But nevermind, we all need someone to relate to, and Donald provides a much needed avenue to channel our inner demons through ( and way healthier than watching Fox News ). That is why he is so enduring, and has overshadowed that saccharine sweet mouse. Donald is the REAL SHIT! Donald speaks for us all, in ways we wish we could, but would end up in jail if we did, so put your pants back on, shut up and go to work already.
P.S. It's my turn to worry about Dale. Where are you Dale!
P.P.S. Nah, Deborah, I don't make 'em up. Just a common meme thief am I!

Any movie starring Ed Harris is worth a watch; another actor who, like TLJ, cares more about what he does with his time than how he looks doing it.
"Frontera", (available on Netflix), is another gripping moral tale along the likes of TLJ's "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada"; set along the US/Mexico border. The set-up scenes take place in Mexico before two crossers begin their trek North. The next scenes set up what should be a leisurely horseback ride for the wife of Mr. Harris's rancher, who meets our trekkers along a wash. I can't go further along the storyline w/o giving major plot points away, but the subsequent actions kept me riveted to the screen all the way to the VERY end. I cared deeply for all the characters involved, except for those I waited for truth and justice from.
Tour-de-Force by all the actors; deep character study. I HIGHLY recommend !!!!

The Tony Awards will be held June 5 next year, but where the ceremony will be held is still up in the air.
The 6,000-seat Radio City Music Hall has long been the preferred home for the awards because of its size and proximity to Broadway. But MSG Entertainment said it will be using Radio City for its "New York Spring Spectacular" from June 15 through Aug. 7. That would put the awards show during crucial rehearsal time for the Rockettes' show.
From 2011-12, the Tonys were handed out at the Beacon Theatre on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Other possible venues include the Best Buy Theater and the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

A comic saga of a creative writing professor and his letters of recommendation has won the Thurber Prize for American Humor.
Author Julie Schumacher received $5,000 and a crystal plaque for winning with "Dear Committee Members." She was honoured Monday at the New York comedy club Carolines on Broadway.
The two runners-up were Roz Chast for her memoir "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" and Annabelle Gurwitch for "I See You Made an Effort: Compliments, Indignities, and Survival Stories from the Edge."
No woman had won the Thurber award until this year. The award was established in 1996 and is named for the late humorist and cartoonist James Thurber.
Two "Breaking Bad" stars who tried to nab drug lords in the fictional AMC-TV series are trying to shake up the New Mexico political scene in real life.
Dean Norris, who played DEA agent Hank Schrader on the show, is campaigning for Steven Michael Quezada, who is running for the Bernalillo County Commission, KOB-TV reports. Quezada played DEA agent, "Gomey," in the series.
Norris was back in Albuquerque last week urging residents to register to vote. He then attended events with Quezada.
The 52-year-old Quezada, an elected Albuquerque Public Schools board member, is one of four candidates seeking a District 2 commission seat.
Quezada said Bob Odenkirk, who played a sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman on "Breaking Bad" and spinoff "Better Call Saul," also will campaign on his behalf.

Sony Pictures TV's GetTV is adding vintage episodes of "The Merv Griffin Show" and "The Judy Garland Show" to its primetime lineup starting next month.
The channel is creating a variety-show block to air weekly on Mondays from 8-11 p.m. "Judy Garland Show" episodes will open at 8 p.m., followed by various vintage musical and entertainment specials and at 10 p.m. by an episode of Merv Griffin's talk show, which ran for more than 20 years starting in 1965.
"Merv Griffin" guests over the years ranged from Hollywood legends including John Wayne, Lucille Ball and Joan Crawford to political and social leaders such as Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Richard Nixon. GetTV licensed the episodes from Reelin' in the Years Prods. Most of the episodes have not been seen on TV since their original airings.
"Judy Garland" CBS series ran for only a short time, in 1963 and 1964, but featured performances from Barbra Streisand, Lena Horne, Ethel Merman, Tony Bennett and other notables. Among the show's highlights was Garland's emotional performance of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" in late 1963 following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The episodes were licensed from World Live Nation Entertainment.
GetTV's revival of "Merv Griffin" comes on the heels of Antenna TV's announcement that Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" will return to late-night with full episodes airing seven nights a week starting Jan. 1.
An investigation found "no evidence whatsoever" that Missouri's only surgical abortion facility sells fetal remains, Attorney General Chris Koster said Monday, marking the latest response to a heated national debate over Planned Parenthood's handling of fetal tissue.
The Democrat said interviews and documentation from his office's investigation show that tissue from the more than 300 surgical abortions performed at the St. Louis Planned Parenthood in June was properly incinerated. The nearly 50-page report details contracts that Koster said track fetal tissue from the abortion clinic to a pathology lab and then to an incinerator.
Several state attorneys general and health departments began reviewing state practices following the release of undercover videos in July by anti-abortion activists. The videos show officials from the national organization discussing the transfer of tissue for medical research, which spurred criticism primarily by Republicans.
Koster's findings back up repeated assertions from the St. Louis clinic - the only center licensed to perform surgical abortions in Missouri - that it doesn't participate in a program to donate fetal remains.

Concerns about the world's most popular herbicide continue to mount, as U.S. agricultural experts note spreading weed resistance to glyphosate. As the key ingredient in Monsanto Co's Roundup herbicide products as well as about 700 other products, glyphosate is widely used on farms as well as residential lawns.
But the chemical has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years in part because scientists and environmentalists have warned that weed resistance to glyphosate has become a significant problem that impacts crop production.
In the latest account of glyphosate-resistant weeds, U.S. weed scientist Dallas Peterson said this week that resistance is increasing rapidly in the key farming state of Kansas. The trend is a worrisome sign as weed resistance spreads from the southern U.S. into the Midwest and Plains farming states, he said.
Peterson, who is both a weed scientist at Kansas State University (KSU) and president of the Weed Science Society of America, said Kansas soybean farmers in particular are experiencing weed problems, particularly with a type known as Palmer amaranth. Wet weather along with the weed resistance contributed to the problem, he said.
Monsanto and DowAgroSciences, a unit of Dow Chemical, are bringing new herbicides to market, combining glyphosate with dicamba from Monsanto, and glyphosate with 2,4-D from Dow.

Vandals in California toppled a statue of Junipero Serra, who was canonized last week by Pope Francis, and threw paint on tombstones and walls at the Catholic mission in Carmel where the controversial 18th-century Spanish friar is buried, the mission said.
The Carmel Mission Basilica said in a statement on Sunday that the vandalism was discovered inside the entrance courtyard by employees, and had taken place earlier that day.
Local television channel KSBW-TV broadcast images of the fallen statue of Serra, doused with green paint, and the words "saint of genocide" scratched into the base where it had stood.
The Franciscan missionary is remembered by admirers as the "Apostle of California," but he is accused by Native Americans of helping to eradicate their culture.

Poland's army said Monday it has begun inspecting the southwestern area where two men claim to have discovered an armoured Nazi gold train buried at the end of World War II.
The treasure hunters -- a German and a Pole -- left the world spellbound last month with their alleged find near the city of Walbrzych of a railway car potentially full of jewels and gold stolen by the Nazis.
Piotr Koper, a Pole, and German national Andreas Richter announced last month they had discovered a 98-metre-long (320-foot-long) train carriage buried eight to nine metres underground.
They believe the contents are mostly weapon prototypes, though according to local legend they could also include artwork and Nazi documents.

A national wildlife group awarded $3.3 million in grants Monday in its initial push to stem the worrisome decline of monarch butterflies, hoping the effort helps restore as much as 33,000 acres of habitat for the black-and-orange insect.
The 22 grants announced by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will be matched by more than $6.7 million from the recipients, who are in more than a dozen states and among 115 applicants for funds in the conservation effort launched earlier this year.
Many of Monday's biggest grants - roughly $250,000 apiece - went to efforts to bolster grasslands and other habitat in key monarch butterfly migration corridors. One project looks to restore more than 1,000 acres of monarch habitat in the Dakotas, while another includes the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation's quest to create or improve 7,000 habitat acres along two of the butterfly's major north-south migration routes.
Roughly $1.2 million of the grant money this year comes from St. Louis-based agribusiness Monsanto Co., maker of the Roundup weed killer that critics have partly blamed for knocking out monarch butterflies' habitat. Monsanto said in March it was committing $4 million overall, most of it to the foundation's Monarch Butterfly Conservation Fund.
Catherine Coulson, better known as the cryptic Log Lady from Twin Peaks, died Monday morning at the age of 71. No further details of her death were immediately available.
Born in Ashland, Oregon, Coulson landed her first major television role playing the Log Lady in 1990, which she was set to reprise in the upcoming Showtime revival series in 2017. She has also appeared in David Lynch's surrealist classic Eraserhead-during which she began transcendental meditation the same time as he did-and his short film The Amputee.
Lynch remembered the actress in a statement. "Today I lost one of my dearest friends, Catherine Coulson," he said. "Catherine was solid gold. She was always there for her friends, she was filled with love for all people, for her family, for her work. She was a tireless worker. She had a great sense of humor-she loved to laugh and make people laugh. She was a spiritual person, a longtime TM meditator. She was the Log Lady."
Coulson recently appeared in Portlandia and Psych (as the Log Lady Wood Woman in its "Dual Spires" episode), though she has primarily been working in the theater with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
