Trivia Question from Yesterday

In his lifetime, how many Grammy nominations did Muhammad Ali receive?

       Two                                                      Source

Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.; January 17, 1942 - June 3, 2016) was an American Olympic and professional boxer and activist. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century. From early in his career, Ali was known as an inspiring, controversial, and polarizing figure both inside and outside the ring.

In 1963, Ali released an album of spoken word music on Columbia Records titled I Am the Greatest, and in 1964, he recorded a cover version of the rhythm and blues song "Stand by Me". I Am the Greatest reached number 61 on the album chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He later received a second Grammy nomination, for "Best Recording for Children", with his 1976 spoken word novelty record, The Adventures of Ali and His Gang vs. Mr. Tooth Decay.        Source

Nasty-Gram?

I was drunk and angry when I wrote my Idiotorial, so if I offended anyone, I sincerely apologize, and wonder what exactly it was that offended? Was it my reference to the song by Mr. Ludacris? Well, in all fairness, I WAS called an "asshole", which once upon a time, WAS considered offensive. I thought the song reference was funny at the time, but if that offended anyone, I'm sorry.

If my version of the truth offended, again, I apologize, but that is how I interpret the evidence.

If anyone thought I was endorsing Trump, I apologize.

If anyone wants to vote for a woman simply because she's a woman, there is an alternative! Have you heard the good news about Jill Stein? I know, ANYONE who votes third party will enable TRUMP to WIN! BOOGIE BOOGIE!!! So easy to manipulate people in the Kingdom Of Fear.

Well, we are all free to vote as we wish, and I wish to vote my conscience this one time before I die. If that makes me a bad person, it still doesn't give anyone the right to be rude.

Posting about the candidates is fair game. Insulting fellow Americans shouldn't be. I do appreciate your posting opposing opinions. Thank you.

Nasty-gram? Yep. You betcha.

I get that you're angry. I also get that you'd been imbibing.

Reunite for 2016 Election Special

'Will & Grace'

The mystery of the "Will & Grace" reunion has been solved after days of teasing from cast members across social media.

In a new video, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes reprise their characters from the long-running NBC sitcom to weigh in on the 2016 Presidential election.

Will and Grace, of course, are voting for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, while Karen is committed to her close personal friend, Donald Trump. She helped him pick out Melania and everything.

In the end, naturally, it's the ironclad argument that Katy Perry is for Clinton that gets the pivotal swing voter on board.

Stop The Pipeline

National Congress of American Indians

Three days after guard dogs attacked Native Americans protesting an oil pipeline project in North Dakota in early September, an unprecedented event took place at the White House.

Brian Cladoosby, president of the National Congress of American Indians, which represents more than 500 tribes, spoke to nearly a dozen of President Barack Obama's Cabinet-level advisers at a September 6 meeting of the White House's three-year-old Native American Affairs Council.

It was the first time a tribal leader addressed a session of the council, and Cladoosby was invited in his role as the Indian Congress' leader.

Cladoosby, a Swinomish Indian from Washington state, spoke twice at the one-hour roundtable. He told Reuters he praised the Obama administration in his opening statement for its track record on Native American issues such as pushing to reform the Indian Health Service.

But when Cladoosby gave his closing speech, he delivered an impassioned request to his audience: stand with Native Americans who have united with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and block construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, a 1,100 mile conduit to get oil from North Dakota to Illinois.

Almost 80% Believe In Climate Change

Australians

Australians overwhelmingly believe in climate change, according to a new poll, and they are more than ready for the government to do something about it.

According to The Climate Institute's 2016 Climate of the Nation report, 77 percent of Australians believe climate change is happening. That number has grown year on year in the annual report since 2012, when only 64 percent believed in the phenomenon. Of this group, 90 percent feel human activity is at least partly the cause.

The report, released Monday, also indicates the majority of Australians trust the science that suggests human activity is to blame for climate change.

Interestingly, city and rural populations are more aligned on the issue than might be expected. According to the poll, 62 percent of city dwellers trust the science of human-caused climate change, compared to 57 percent of those in rural areas.

Australians also want the federal government to do something about it, and now. Ninety percent think the government is responsible for tackling the issue. They're not handing out medals for its performance so far - only 19 percent of respondents think federal politicians are doing a decent job.

Ashes Auctioned

Truman Capote

Some people will pay good money for anything involving the late Truman Capote. Including his ashes.

Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles announced Saturday that Capote's ashes, contained in a Japanese wooden box have sold for $45,000.

That's well above the original estimate, which the auction house reported as $4,000.

The ashes are dated Aug. 28, 1984, days after the author of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "In Cold Blood" died at 59.

The ashes were long kept by Capote's close friend and ex-wife of Johnny Carson, Joanne Carson, who died last year.

Unhappy Investors

North Carolina

Nearly 60 U.S. investors who together manage more than $2 trillion in assets called on North Carolina on Monday to repeal a law they said is making it harder for companies in the state to hire top talent by limiting protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans gender people.

Under the law, enacted in March, North Carolina is the only U.S. state to require that transgender people use bathrooms in publicly owned buildings that correspond with the sex listed on their birth certificate.

The measure, known as House Bill 2, also bars local non-discrimination protections for LGBT people.

The money managers' criticism comes as the push for civil rights for transgender people has gained momentum in the United States. After North Carolina passed its controversial law, major sports organizations, entertainers and companies pulled events or jobs from the state in protest.

In their letter, the investors said the law was undermining the stable business climate needed for sound investment. The group, led by Trillium Asset Management and New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, said they represent a wide swath of the investor community and $2.1 trillion in total assets under management.

Melting Ice Threatens To Expose Cold War Waste

Greenland

A snow-covered former US army base in Greenland -- dubbed "a city under ice" -- could leak pollutants into the environment as the climate changes, raising difficult questions over who is responsible for a clean-up.

In 1959, US army engineers began constructing a futuristic project in northwestern Greenland that might as well have been lifted from a Cold War spy movie.

A network of tunnels under the snow contained everything from research facilities to a hospital, a cinema and a church -- all powered by a small, portable nuclear reactor.

The pollutants left behind include PCBs used in building supplies, tanks of raw sewage and low-level radioactive coolant used in the nuclear reactor that once stood there.

"When the waste was deposited there nobody thought it would get out again," William Colgan, an assistant professor in the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University in Canada, told AFP.

World Heritage List

Bagan

Myanmar Burma's ancient city of Bagan is "very likely" to be listed as a World Heritage site, a UNESCO official said Monday, promising a boon to a tourist attraction battered by a recent earthquake.

Bagan is home to more than 2,000 ancient Buddhist monuments that are among Myanmar's most venerated religious sites and is a major attraction for its nascent tourist industry.

The former military junta tried to get Bagan listed as a World Heritage site some 20 years ago but was rebuffed, seemingly because of haphazard renovations under its rule.

An earthquake last month destroyed many of those botched restorations.

That will allow fresh work more in keeping with the original design, UNESCO said, boosting Bagan's chances of taking a coveted place on the list of the world's most prized cultural artifacts.

Ring-Shaped Geoglyphs

Peru

Dozens of circular geoglyphs, some comprising several intertwined rings, have been identified and mapped near the ancient Peruvian town of Quilcapampa, revealing that these earthen designs were created near ancient pathways used for trade.

Geoglyphs are designs, which often form shapes or images, on the landscape. They are found all over the world; the most famous examples are located at Nazca, where thousands of such designs - from real and imaginary creatures to geometric shapes - have been etched into the Peruvian desert.

The newly mapped geoglyphs may have had symbolic significance, possibly representing the flow of people and goods through the town at the time, according to Justin Jennings, a curator at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto who is one of the team leaders.

Jennings and his colleagues mapped the geoglyphs at Quilcapampa, in the Sihuas Valley, using a combination of satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and ground surveys. The smaller geoglyphs are visible from the ground, while the larger ones can be better seen from above. The archaeologists are trying to map as much of the landscape as they can before the area is developed for agriculture.

They found that many of the geoglyphs there have simple one-ring designs, while others are more complex.

DNA Traces Path of Their Global Conquest

Ancient Cats

A new study of ancient DNA presented at the 7th International Symposium on Biomolecular Archaeology has revealed the secret story of cats' spread across the globe.

Cats are mysterious creatures. They're independent yet social, aloof yet endearing, and very good at getting what they want. Like any organism, the very first cats originated in one place, then spread. They spread, and spread, and continue to spread, becoming beloved pets and conservationists' worst nightmare, often at the same time.

Exactly how they managed this feat of feline world domination has remained something of a puzzle. How did these small, terrestrial animals make it across the oceans? Cats have no value as livestock (like cows) or transport (like horses). They're good workers as mousers, but only when they want to be. And we talk about the "domestic" cat, but some scientists think that may be a misnomer-maybe we haven't really domesticated them at all.

But they may have domesticated us. Look back 12,000 years in time to the Fertile Crescent at the dawn of agriculture, when cats were buried along with people. Look to the millions of sacred cats mummified in ancient Egypt. Every time we find the carefully entombed remains of a cat, we find a clue to how they got to be who (and where) they are today.

The cats' DNA painted a picture of two distinct bursts of kitty scattering (s-cat-tering, if you will). The first was in the Middle East, where farming began about 10,000 years ago. As farming communities grew out toward the Mediterranean Sea, the cats came with them. The study authors say the farms' piles of grain likely attracted rodents, which then brought out the wild cats. And once farmers saw the value of having fierce mousers around, they likely tried to find a way to keep them.

In Memory

Herschell Gordon Lewis

Exploitation legend and "godfather of gore" Herschell Gordon Lewis has died aged 87. His longtime distributors Something Weird Video (named after Lewis' 1967 feature) broke the news in a Facebook post.

With his 1963 film Blood Feast, Lewis is widely credited with pioneering the splatter genre, despite it being considered "an insult even to the most puerile and salacious of audiences" in a Variety review. A later critique described it as "one of the important releases in film history, ushering in a new acceptance of explicit violence that was obviously just waiting to be exploited".

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1929, Lewis studied journalism in college and became a professor of English literature at Mississippi State University. After a spell working at a radio station in Oklahoma, he joined an advertising agency in Chicago, where he made TV commercials in the 50s. With producer David Friedman, Lewis embarked on a string of then-shocking features, which were made for minimal costs and found a ready audience in what would become known as the grindhouse circuit.

Initially concentrating on the "nudie-cutie" world of low-budget sex films (such as The Adventures of Lucky Pierre and Boin-n-g), Lewis made his mark with cinematic violence in the mid-60s with Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs! and Color Me Blood Red. Though regularly accused of technical ineptitude and outrageous taste, the films made money, and Lewis continued to push the envelope through the late 60s and early 70s. Like his contemporary Roger Corman, Lewis' work was seen as a subversive force as the counter-culture gathered steam.

However, Lewis decided to retire from film-making in the early 70s, after realising his style of low-budget horror had run its course, and returned to advertising. He published a stream of marketing guides, including titles such as How to Make Your Advertising Twice As Effective at Half the Cost and Sales Letters That Sizzle: All the Hooks, Lines and Sinkers You'll Ever Need to Close Sales.

Lewis returned to film-making in 2002 with Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat, which premiered at the Dead by Dawn horror film festival in Edinburgh.
