• Sports writers sometimes lead interesting lives. Back when figure skater Katarina Witt was competing internationally for East Germany, many people believed that the East German athletes were using steroids. (In fact, some were.) However, at a press conference, Ms. Witt denied ever using steroids. She leaned forward, then told the sports writers, “Look at these boobs! If I were on steroids, would I have boobs like this?”
Thanksgiving
• For a party, gay author Joel Perry ordered a turkey to be prepared by HoneyBaked. Unfortunately, when he arrived with his reservation number to pick up the turkey, he was informed that it had already been sold. One other turkey was on display, so he asked if he could buy it, but the salesperson informed him that someone else was buying it. A gay man expecting 20 people for dinner is not to be trifled with, so Mr. Perry jumped over the counter, grabbed the turkey, threw down $50, then dashed out of the store.
Titles
• Children’s book author Lois Lowry plays a game with children and other people, a game with no wrong answers. The game is played when she and others are looking at a scene, and someone asks, “What book does this remind you of?” For a meadow scene, the answers may range from Gone With the Wind to Wind in the Willows to Where the Wild Things Are. All of these answers are right. Usually, the answers differ considerably, but on one occasion everyone came up with the same book title. Watching a 15-month-old boy play with his food in a high chair, everyone answered, James and the Giant Peach.
• Cranston Toller was and is a controversial, outspoken figure skater and artist. When Mr. Toller wrote Zero Tollerance, his autobiography, an editor suggested that he subtitle it Chronicles of a Misspent Life. Mr. Toller would have none of that, saying, “How dare you? My life has not been misspent. My life has been textured.”
• Gail Godwin wrote a novel titled The Good Husband. She sent her assistant to copy some of the pages from the manuscript, and her assistant reported that while she was copying the pages, another woman had seen the title and snorted, “Ha! Where? Let me know when you find him.”
Tobacco
• Andrew Tobias, an anti-smoking activist, was annoyed by a plane flying over his vacation home and displaying the pro-tobacco banner “Newport: Alive with Pleasure,” so he hired another plane to display the banner “Larry Tisch Sells Cancer Sticks.” (Larry Tisch controlled the company that manufactures Newport cigarettes.) The next summer, another pro-tobacco plane flew over his vacation home bearing the banner “Parliament: The Perfect Recess.” (This sounds like a tobacco advertisement aimed at schoolchildren.) So Mr. Tobias hired another plane to display the banner “Parliament: The PERMANENT Recess.” The summer after that, no pro-tobacco plane appeared, so Mr. Tobias hired a final plane to display the banner “Thank You for Not Smoking.”
• As you would expect, children’s book author Dr. Seuss had a quirky sense of humor. When he decided to quit smoking, he bought a corncob pipe and put radish seeds in its bowl. After boarding a bus, he put the unlit pipe in his mouth, held it there for several minutes, then pulled an eyedropper from his pocket and squirted several drops of water into the bowl. Of course, a woman asked him, “What are you doing?” Dr. Seuss replied, “I’m watering the radishes.”
Travel
• While Mark Twain was traveling in Europe (an adventure he wrote about in Innocents Abroad), a number of tour guides made his life miserable, so with the help of a few friends, he decided to make the tour guides’ lives miserable. For the duration of the trip, Mark Twain and his friends refused to be impressed by anything a tour guide showed them. Once, a tour guide showed them a letter handwritten by Christopher Columbus. One of Mark Twain’s friends looked at the letter and complained about the sloppy penmanship, “Why, I have seen boys in America only fourteen years old that could write better than that.”
This electronic musical instrument, originally known as the ætherphone/etherphone, was the product of Soviet government-sponsored research into proximity sensors. Often associated with eerie situations, what is the name of this instrument?
Gossypium hirsutum, also known as upland cotton or Mexican cotton, is the most widely planted species of cotton in the world. Globally, about 90% of all cotton production is of cultivars derived from this species. In the United States, the world's largest exporter of cotton, it constitutes approximately 95% of all cotton production. It is native to Mexico, the West Indies, northern South America, Central America and possibly tropical Florida.

Dave responded:
The United States. My guess was right for a change. Prior to the Civil War the cotton harvest depended on laborers who were usually slaves, but after the war the freedmen were often forced into sharecropping or working for low wages. Years ago a common southern insult from one white person to another was “You Cotton Picker” which inferred he was no better than a black person. Today, the backbreaking labor that used to be required to harvest cotton has been replaced by machinery. Most of the cotton grown and harvested in the US is now exported to the cheap labor markets in Mexico, Latin America, and China.
zorch replied:
The United States is the largest exporter.

I didn't know that either, I looked it up. It's the U.S, I kinda thought it might be, but I didn't know. I watch Classic Country Music when I do my exercises and it seems all the artists either picked cotton or worked in the coal mines before they became famous.

On the heels of its history-making Emmy wins Sunday, Schitt’s Creek is heading to Comedy Central. The Pop TV series will premiere October 2 on its sister ViacomCBS network.
Pop and Comedy Central have been part of ViacomCBS’ Entertainment and Youth group since the beginning of the year, and Comedy Central, along with sibling Logo, in April carried a simulcast of Pop’s Schitt’s Creek series finale, which drew 1.3 million viewers in Live+Same Day across the three networks to rank as the most-watched episode in the show’s history.
The single-camera comedy also streams on Netflix, which will release the show’s final season Oct. 7.
Schitt’s Creek on Sunday became the first series — comedy or drama — to sweep all categories in its field on the main Emmy telecast, a total of seven wins, led by Outstanding Comedy Series. With its overall haul of nine Emmy awards, including two wins at the Creative Arts Emmys, Schitt’s Creek also broke the record for most wins for a comedy series in a single year.
The comedy stars Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Daniel Levy, Annie Murphy, Chris Elliott, Emily Hampshire, Jennifer Robertson, Noah Reid, Sarah Levy, Karen Robinson, Dustin Milligan, John Hemphill and Rizwan Manji. The series follows a wealthy family who suddenly find themselves broke and forced to live in Schitt’s Creek, a small town they once bought as a joke. The critically acclaimed comedy series first premiered on Pop TV in January 2015 and recently wrapped its sixth and final season in April 2020.
Call this “The One with the Diverse Cast.” Sterling K. Brown, Uzo Aduba, Ryan Bathe, Aisha Hinds, Kendrick Sampson and Jeremy Pope are set for an online Friends table read Tuesday. They will re-imagine the Season 3 episode titled “The One Where No One’s Ready.”
The hourlong “Zoom Where It Happens” event with an all-Black cast starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday hosted by Gabrielle Union, who appeared in a 2001 episode the NBC sitcom. Salli Richardson-Whitfield is set to direct.
Brown will play the Ross character, Aduba is Phoebe, Sampson is Joey, Bathe is Rachel, Pope is Chandler and Hinds is Monica. Aduba won an Emmy on Sunday for her supporting turn in Mrs. America, while Pope was nominated for Hollywood and Brown vied in a pair of categories for This Is Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.\
The event is happening two weeks after a Zoom Where It Happens table read of The Golden Girls with an all-Black cast of Regina King, Tracee Ellis Ross, Alfre Woodard and Sanaa Lathan.
The read will support When We All Vote, a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit led by Michelle Obama whose mission is to change the culture around voting by bringing together citizens, institutions, brands and organizations to increase participation in every election.
Two of the biggest sci-fi icons have finally come face-to-face. Mark Hamill and Patrick Stewart met for equal parts intense and silly moments in a new commercial for Uber Eats.
The (socially distanced) spot opens with the Star Wars and Star Trek actors having an intense standoff over the pronunciation of "tomato," which leads Hamill to say, "Stewart, so it's come to this." To which Stewart replies, "Careful Hamill, daddy's not here to save you" (a solid Vader reference).
An angry Hamill responds, "Oh, I am my daddy!" That line sends both men into confusion over its meaning.
In reality, the two are friends who have had some fun with each other on social media in the past. Stewart's fellow Star Trek actor William Shatner and Hamill are also known for giving each other a hard time via social media for the respective franchises.
The more the TV business changes, the more the Emmy Awards stay the same.
“Succession,” a show about a dysfunctional family that controls a media empire, won the award for best drama from the Television Academy Sunday night. The win marks the fifth time in the last six years that HBO has won the top prize at the celebration of the year’s best TV.
HBO’s “Watchmen” -- a wrenching exploration of racism based on a graphic novel -- earned the most awards of any show, with 11, including best limited series. The wins burnish HBO’s reputation as the home of the best TV in the U.S., if not the world, setting a lofty standard for a phalanx of new streaming services, including Disney+, Peacock, Apple TV+ and Quibi.
The award ceremony itself, meanwhile, failed to reverse a long-term ratings trend: The audience dropped 12% to a new low of 6.1 million viewers on Walt Disney Co.’s ABC, according to Nielsen data. Last night’s telecast had to compete with NBA playoffs and “Sunday Night Football.”
HBO won 30 awards in all, the most of any network. Though Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek” owned the night in terms of comedy awards, HBO won most everything else.
Four former heads of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Democrats and Republicans, on Monday issued a sharp rebuke of the Trump administration's record on the environment after the current administrator said the agency is focused on "work that has been neglected for years."
Former EPA administrators for Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and Republicans George H.W. Bush and his son George W. Bush criticized the administration of President Donald Trump for rolling back regulations on methane, vehicle emissions and power plants.
"If you need any more proof of how strongly this is felt by people you have it today in four former administrators... we've all come to the same conclusion," Carol Browner, who ran the EPA under Clinton, told reporters in a call organized by Joe Biden's presidential campaign.
Two Republican former administrators, William Reilly and Christine Todd Whitman, endorsed Biden on the call, saying the Trump administration's actions on the environment had been an "aberration."
"There has been nothing like an administration, on the environment, in the last 50 years to compare with the dereliction that characterizes this administration," Reilly, who served under George H.W. Bush, said on the call.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be released from a UK prison and not be extradited to the US, according to more than 160 world leaders, politicians and diplomats.
The high-powered group gave their support to Assange in an open letter addressed to prime minister Boris Johnson and other government ministers.
Signatories of the letter, include the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, and two former presidents of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The letter was also signed by a string of US critics, including Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro, and former Ecuadorian leader Rafael Correa.
Aurora - the dancing glow of ionised particles in Earth's upper atmosphere - is not unique to our planet.
The phenomenon has been spotted shining in the atmospheres of every other planet except Mercury. Even Jupiter's moons Ganymede and Europa have auroras.
Never, until now, had an aurora been detected on a comet.
But, in a new analysis of data collected by the Rosetta spacecraft, the space around Comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/C-G) has been observed glowing with far-ultraviolet auroral radiation.
