Henry Rollins: End of Summer Rituals (LA Weekly)
I greet and bid farewell to seasons with music and literature. This can be quickly written off as being sentimental, nostalgic or not having the wherewithal to forge ahead into the bright future. Whatever. I do these rituals in an effort to not become so focused that everything in my life flattens out into one, continuous, raging surgical strike.

Disney Princesses Look Dapper in Their Princes' Clothes
Haruki Godo plays with Disney costuming by dressing various animated princesses in the clothes of their respective princes. Some of them look even better in boots and pants than they do in their usual outfits.
Theodor Seuss Geisel (March 2, 1904 - September 24, 1991) was an American writer, poet, and cartoonist most widely known for children's picture books written and illustrated as Dr. Seuss. He had used the pen name Dr. Theophrastus Seuss in college and later used Theo LeSieg, and once Rosetta Stone, as well as Dr. Seuss.
For books that Geisel wrote and others illustrated, he used the pen name "Theo LeSieg" ("LeSieg" is "Geisel" spelled backward).

PS: Thank you for: Daily Kos: Is there a media blackout on the fracking flood disaster in Colorado?
I think that the fires on the Eastern front of CO helped aid the flooding, but I am sure the fracking caused much more of the damage. CO has never had floods like this, and certainly not in the 33 years I lived there!!
Mark my words, we are destroying Mother Earth
Dale of Diamond Springs, Norcali, replied:
Theo LeSieg is the pen name used by Theodor Geisel for books written by him and illustrated by others. LeSieg is Geisel backwards. Mr. Geisel is best known by another pen name: Dr. Seuss. I remember sitting in the Diamond Branch of the Oakland Public Library when I was 6 years old Reading "Cat in the Hat".

Harper Lee has settled the lawsuit she filed to secure the copyright to her classic novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird."
A federal judge in New York City approved the order last week dismissing the case against Samuel L. Pinkus, the son-in-law of Lee's former literary agent, and companies he allegedly created. Two other defendants had been dropped from the suit a week earlier.
Gloria C. Phares, the Alabama author's attorney, says the case had ended to Lee's satisfaction. Defence attorney Vincent Carissimi said many people misconstrued the nature of the case and that Lee's royalties were never in danger.
Filed in early May in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the suit alleged that Pinkus failed to properly protect the copyright after his father-in-law, Eugene Winick, became ill a decade ago.

Emmy organizers say Sunday's awards ceremony will include five special memorial tributes, including one to Cory Monteith.
"Glee" star Monteith died in July at age 31 of a heroin and alcohol overdose. He will be remembered by the show's Jane Lynch.
The TV academy says Edie Falco will honor James Gandolfini, her co-star on "The Sopranos," at this year's ceremony. Gandolfini died of a heart attack in June at age 51.
Other tributes planned: Rob Reiner honoring "All in the Family Star" Jean Stapleton; Robin Williams remembering his friend and mentor Jonathan Winters; and Michael J. Fox honoring "Family Ties" producer Gary David Goldberg.
The TV academy says Sunday's Emmy ceremony on CBS also will include the traditional "in memoriam" segment recognizing other industry members who have died.
Academy Award nominee Rosie Perez got hitched in Las Vegas over the weekend, making good on a promise to her new husband, artist Eric Hayes, that she'd marry him if the boxer won his match Saturday night.
Rosie, 49, played coy while chatting with "omg! Insider" co-host Kevin Frazier prior to the fight, joking that it sure did seem to be a good weekend for weddings (perhaps referring to LeBron James's and John Legend's Saturday nuptials). "I think it's a wonderful weekend to get married in Vegas," she said. But it turns out she was talking about herself!
Kevin spoke with Rosie on Monday morning, when she confirmed the big news. "I told [Eric], 'If Floyd wins, we'll get married'" … and they did!
Rosie added that although they're legally wed, she and Hayes will have an official wedding ceremony for friends and family in New York at a later date to be determined.
The violin played by the bandmaster of the Titanic as the liner sank beneath the waves is to go on display at a museum marking the tragedy in Northern Ireland, officials said Monday.
The instrument belonging to Wallace Hartley was found strapped to his body after he drowned with some 1,500 others on board the supposedly unsinkable ship in 1912.
It carries an inscription from the 34-year-old's fiancee to mark their engagement.
It will be displayed at the Titanic Belfast exhibition from September 18 until October 13 before it goes to auction in Wiltshire, southwest England on October 19.
The lead singer in a heavy metal Christian rock band has been ordered by a California judge on Monday to stand trial for allegedly attempting to hire an undercover sheriff's deputy to kill his estranged wife.
Tim Lambesis, the 32-year-old lead singer in the band As I Lay Dying, will stand trial in San Diego County Superior Court in Vista, California, and faces up to nine years in prison if convicted.
He was arrested in May in Oceanside, north of San Diego, and charged with a count of soliciting the murder of his wife, Meggan Lambesis, who had filed for divorce a year earlier. They had been married eight years.
Prosecutors allege Lambesis asked an undercover sheriff's deputy posing as a man named "Red" to kill his estranged wife.
The singer is accused of giving the man an envelope containing $1,000 in cash, photos of his wife, her address and codes to her home security system. He also allegedly gave the deputy a list of dates to carry out the murder when he would have their three adopted children with him.

A New York art dealer admitted Monday she took part in a 15-year scam that fooled art enthusiasts into buying more than $80 million of counterfeits imitating famous artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
Glafira Rosales, 57, of Sands Point, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, telling Judge Katherine P. Failla that for parts of two decades she teamed with others to sell counterfeits of various expressionist artists including Pollock, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell.
"These works of art were actually fakes created by an individual residing in Queens," she said, alluding to an artist who had studied at a New York art school and sold paintings on the streets of Manhattan in the 1980s.
The confession came as Rosales pleaded guilty to nine charges, including wire fraud, tax fraud and money laundering. The charges carry a potential prison term of up to 99 years, though Rosales can earn leniency through a co-operation deal requiring her to share what she knows with prosecutors, the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service.
Cumulus Media Inc., the second largest radio station owner in the country, is partnering with music streaming service Rdio, stepping up competition with Clear Channel.
The deal, announced Monday, gives Cumulus an undisclosed minority stake in Rdio parent Pulser Media. Clear Channel, the biggest radio station owner in the country, has the iHeart Radio service.
Traditional radio station groups are doing all they can to stay relevant as listeners increasingly spend time on mobile devices with services like Pandora, Rhapsody and Spotify. Apple plans to launch its iTunes Radio on hundreds of millions of devices this week.
No money is changing hands immediately in the deal. Cumulus will offer on-air promotion of Rdio such as commercial time or talk segments. Cumulus will also sell advertising for Rdio's upcoming free streaming service, expected by the end of the year, and provide exclusive content to Rdio, such as its Nash country music channel.

Initiated as small, defiant, sexually daring protests, gay pride parades have become mainstream spectacles patronized by corporate sponsors and straight politicians as they spread nationwide. For many gays, who prize the events' edginess, the shift is unwelcome - as evidenced by bitter debate preceding Sunday's parade in Dallas.
At issue was a warning from police and organizers that rules related to nudity and sexual behavior would be enforced more strictly than in past years. Police said anyone violating indecency laws in front of children could be charged with a felony.
The warnings outraged some local activists, whose reactions swiftly echoed through gay-oriented social media nationwide.
"To make the parade more 'family friendly' and to accommodate comfort for the increasing number of attending heterosexuals and corporate sponsorship, participants are being asked to cover up!" activist Daniel Scott Cates wrote on his Facebook page. "The 'queer' is effectively being erased from our pride celebration."
A federal judge says private prison company Corrections Corporation of America is in contempt of court for persistently understaffing an Idaho prison in direct violation of a legal settlement.
U.S. District Judge David Carter made the ruling Monday in a lawsuit between inmates at the CCA-run Idaho Correctional Center and the Nashville, Tenn.-based company.
Carter wrote that CCA had ample reason to make sure it was meeting the staffing requirements at the prison, yet the level of understaffing was apparently far worse than the company originally acknowledged. He is appointing an independent monitor to oversee staffing at the prison, and says steep fines - starting at $100 an hour - will incur if the company violates the agreement again.
The judge also rejected CCA's contention that the former warden and other company officials didn't know about the understaffing, saying that they had been warned of the staffing problems multiple times and at the very least failed to check it out.
CCA acknowledged earlier this year that its employees filed reports with the state that falsely showed 4,800 hours of vacant security posts as being staffed during 2012. But during the contempt of court hearing, witnesses revealed that number only included the night shift during a seven-month span.

An argument over the theories of 18th century philosopher Immanuel Kant ended in a man being shot in a grocery store in southern Russia.
RIA news agency quoted police in the city of Rostov-on-Don as saying a fight broke out between two men as they argued over Kant, the German author of "Critique of Pure Reason", without giving details of their debate.
"In the course of the fight, the suspect took out a pistol firing rubber bullets and fired several shots at his opponent," it said, adding that one man was detained and the victim was taken to hospital. His life was not in danger.
Kant lived in Koenigsberg, which is now the Russian city of Kaliningrad, and is a central figure of modern philosophy. Many Russians love to discuss philosophy and history, often over a drink, but such discussions rarely end in shootings.
A Chinese hospital's request for blood from healthy female virgins for use in medical research has been condemned as insulting to women, state-run media reported Monday.
The Peking University Cancer Hospital said it needed the blood of 100 female virgins aged from 18 to 24 years old for studies on the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is usually transmitted through sexual contact, the China Daily reported.
Some internet users condemned the request as promoting virginity worship and demeaning to women.
"Male virgins are not needed, just females, how is this science?" wrote one user of Sina Weibo, a social media service similar to Twitter and a lively forum for popular opinion.
