Joe Bob Briggs: Please Don't Kill Yourself, That's Our Job! (Taki's Magazine)
For some reason, people hate it when the accused criminal kills himself, especially when he does it before the trial. Am I the only person who can see the logic of Jeffrey Epstein's suicide? You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to imagine why a guy facing life in prison for charges he'd already served time for-so he knew what life is like for sex offenders in the joint-would be bummed by the unsealing of 2,000 documents containing every type of sex crime known to man, including rape, trafficking, and molestation of minors, not to mention the lesser offenses like pandering and befriending horny presidents.

Nicholas Barber: Joaquin Phoenix stars as Batman's arch-nemesis in a new origin-story movie. But is this dark, dingy drama any better than any of the other supervillain films? (BBC)
For what it's worth, Joker is superior to the aforementioned Suicide Squad and Venom. Its flawless recreation of an earlier decade is a remarkable feat of impersonation. And I would dearly love it if Phoenix revisited the character in a sequel. But the idea that Joker is significantly more mature and intelligent than previous superhero (or supervillain) films? You must be joking.

Nicholas Barber: Brad Pitt stars as an astronaut extraordinaire in a space-travel movie full of rollicking action. But is it as good as its zero-gravity predecessors? (BBC)
The Venice Film Festival has launched three of Hollywood's most thoughtful space-travel movies recently, with last year's First Man following Arrival and Gravity. This year, it's the turn of Ad Astra, written and directed by James Gray, and starring Brad Pitt as Major Roy McBride, astronaut extraordinaire. Ad Astra is almost as intelligent as those other films, but it shares too much of their imagery to seem entirely original. And, like them, it veers towards questions of parenthood and loss, a trajectory that is starting to become irritating. Isn't anyone allowed to journey to the final frontier without getting choked up about their relatives along the way?

Lindsay Baker: Is failure the new literary success? (BBC)
From memoir and self-care books to comic novels, writing about our flaws and imperfections has never been so popular. But can failing ever be a success?

Alexandra Petri: Trump has a plan! His plan is for nothing to go wrong. (Washington Post)
First off, do not worry about the economy. There is nothing to worry about. Who's worried? If you were to worry, that would make the economy second-guess itself and grow agitated. Don't worry about the economy. It's fine. Worry about the Space Command.

Martha Hayes "Helen Hunt: 'An Oscar's not a big game-changer. It's not like your worries are over'" (The Guardian)
The actor and director talks about the perils of fame, sexual violence in the industry and returning to the screen in the Mad About You reboot and the new BBC drama World on Fire.

Trivia Question of the Day

Besides being female, talented, and successful, what else do Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Dusty Springfield, and Sissy Spacek have in common?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Founded in 1786, what is the oldest brewery in North America?

       Molson                                                      Source

The Molson Brewery was formed in 1786 in Montreal by the Molson family. In 2005, Molson merged with US-based Coors to form Molson Coors Brewing Company, the world's seventh-largest brewery at that time. Molson Coors Canada Inc. is the name of the Canadian subsidiary of Molson Coors Brewing Company. Molson's first brewery was located on the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal, where the company continues to maintain its operations today.

Founded in Montreal in 1786, the Molson Brewery is the oldest brewery in North America and continues to produce beer on the site of the original brewery.        Source

Randall was first, and correct, with:
   Molson Brewery

Dave said:
Molson. There is still an operating Molson brewery at the original location, although Molson Coors has announced the plant will close by 2021 when a new nearby plant comes online. Mass produced Canadian beer has always been superior to the watery swill of the typical US mass market beers. Now there are tasty alternatives though, especially the micro-brewed beers and ales, although that market is over-saturated and some are now going under. I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Yeungling. Not a bad beer, but it's CEO is a big fan of The Donald, so it's been banned from our house.

Alan J answered:
   The Molson Brewery.

Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
The Molson Brewery in Montreal is the oldest brewery in North America, having been established in 1786.

Deborah replied:
The Internet is flawed. It's telling me, on multiple sites, that the oldest brewery in America is Yeungling, in Pottsville, PA. I don't believe that's so, as the founding year doesn't match the one you provide, so screw you, Internet, for failing to find an answer to such a simple question. I'd probably be more forgiving if my dogs hadn't woken me up at 5:30 on a holiday. Jerks.

Cal in Vermont wrote:
Molson. From Canada. All American beer is now TinkleWaterLite (except here in Vermont where everybody, including my youngest son, makes beer out of rose hips and sunflower seeds and Skittles) so Molson it is.

John I from Hawai`i says,
   "Yeungling."

JKennie, Austin, replied:
   Old Yeungling (sic)?

Kevin K. in Washington, DC, responded:
That's Molson. We used to drive up to Kingston Ontario from Syracuse just to buy a few cases of Molson Ale because the Canadian version was better and had a higher alcohol content than what was sold as export to the U.S.

DJ Useo said:
I found out the answer is "Molson", which I had suspected, but I got the answer by asking a friend.
I appreciated the help, although he went on about beer way more than I required.
Sadly, I can only drink "near-beer".

Anecdotes

Composers

• Sergei Rachmaninoff and Frances Alda are two famous names in music. One you would especially like to hear play the piano, and the other you would especially like to hear sing. Ms. Alda, a soprano, was playing piano at a get-together of musical notables when Mr. Rachmaninoff remarked to tenor John McCormack, "John, I want to play piano." Mr. McCormack picked up Ms. Alda and deposited her on a couch. She was going to protest, but seeing that Mr. Rachmaninoff was replacing her at the piano, she happily listened to him. By the way, Mr. Rachmaninoff and Mr. McCormack once listened together to a recording of Mr. McCormack singing "None But the Lonely Heart." Mr. Rachmaninoff said, "Is too slow." Mr. McCormack insisted that the tempo was correct. They argued for a while, and Mr. Rachmaninoff's wife finally went to him and whispered a few words of Russian. Mr. Rachmaninoff then told Mr. McCormack, "My wife tells me that you have a perfect right to your opinion - but you are wrong!"

• Some music is created simply because the conditions are right. After the Harriott Quintet thought that they were finished recording one day, some of the musicians got ready to dismantle their equipment. However, Pat Smyth doodled at the piano, and Phil Seaman picked up his cowbell and hit it. It was pitched in A, and Mr. Smyth began playing in A. Shake Keane was having a drink, and he tapped the tumbler with a pencil - and the tumbler rang out with A. Coleridge Goode, the bassist, had a feeling that something good could come out of this, and he told the recording engineer, "Run the tape. Run the tape. We've got something here. We're going to play something." Joe Harriott came out of the control box, and everyone started playing, and the result was "Modal," a slow and pretty piece that appeared on the jazz album Abstract.

• Many artists and musicians are concerned about money and about how many people are in the audience. Composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was one of these creative people. Conductor Walter Damrosch once asked Mr. Rachmaninoff what he was doing when he stared at the gallery. Mr. Rachmaninoff replied, "Counting the standees in the balcony. The manager told me they were not allowed, but there were forty-three." Mr. Damrosch's daughter Gretchen Finletter wrote that a manager "may grow nostalgic for the dreamy artist who does not understand about money, but he seldom has the pleasure of dealing with one."

Conductors

• Arturo Toscanini played second cello in an orchestra that played the music of Giuseppe Verdi - with Verdi conducting it! While playing Verdi's opera Otello, Toscanini played the music as Verdi had written it, including a pianissimo in the last scene of Act 1. During intermission, Verdi came toward the cellists and asked, "Who plays the second cello?" Toscanini was so frightened that he could not move, so another cellist pushed him and said, "Ignoramus, when the great Verdi talks to you, stand up!" Toscanini stood up, and Verdi said to him, "Don't play too soft - play stronger." Toscanini objected, "Maestro, you marked pianissimo." Verdi replied, "Never mind. It must be heard - play naturale." From that experience, Toscanini concluded that a pianissimo in Italian music is different - louder - than a pianissimo in German music. Usually, of course, Toscanini closely followed the markings of composers. A famous conductor once led an orchestra in Robert Schumann's Second Symphony and then asked Toscanini for his opinion. Toscanini replied, "It was bad - all too slow. Why don't you follow Schumann's markings?" The famous conductor replied, "The markings are wrong. No good. They're too fast." Toscanini shouted, "I'd rather be wrong and close to Schumann than right and close to you!"

R. Kelly's Marriage

Aaliyah

R. Kelly's secret marriage to an underage Aaliyah is being used by prosecutors to keep the disgraced singer behind bars.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, prosecutors are trying to shut down Kelly's attempt to have the judge reconsider granting him bond. A judge already denied his request for bond and he has been behind bars ever since.

Kelly argued he was not a flight risk and promised not to talk to young girls, along with wear a GPS monitoring device.

Prosecutors are not impressed with his attempt and are firing back at Kelly. They argue he has presented no "new evidence or new legal analysis."

Prosecutors then bring up Kelly's marriage to the late singer Aaliyah, who he secretly married when she was only 15 and he was 27. They forged the marriage certificate to say Aaliyah was 18.

First Giant Panda Cubs

Germany

Germany's first giant panda cubs have been born and their mother, Meng Meng, is doing a wonderful job looking after the pink twins who bear no resemblance to their black and white furry parents, Berlin Zoo announced on Monday.

Immediately after the first birth, the mother placed the creature on her belly and warmed it with her large paws and soft fur, said the zoo. Within an hour, a second cub had been born.

As pandas with twins usually raise only one of the cubs, the zoo is actively supporting Meng Meng, 6, in the rearing process and has enlisted experts from China's Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Zoo to help.

It is notoriously difficult to get giant pandas to mate and with only 1,864 adults living in their natural habitat, every new cub is an important contribution to the conservation of the species, said Berlin Zoo director and vet Andreas Knieriem.

After weeks of speculation which made headlines in Berlin and national newspapers, experts at the zoo confirmed just over a week ago that Meng Meng was pregnant. The cubs weigh 186 and 136 grams and their gender has not yet been determined.

Gel That Grows

Tooth Enamel

In our world of fast food and sugary snacks, tooth decay is a big problem. Many people undergo nasty dental work when cavities arise, with lost enamel being replaced by materials like metal alloys and resin. Now, scientists have uncovered a way to essentially regrow human tooth enamel, a technique they hope might one day be used by dentists to repair teeth.

Enamel is the hard outer layer of your teeth that protects them against decay. It is the hardest biological tissue we know of, however, too much sugar and poor dental hygiene can cause plaque to build up in our mouths, and the bacteria that accompany this plaque release acid that can destroy the tough enamel. When tooth enamel is lost or damaged, it doesn't grow back, leading to cavities that need to be filled in by a dentist.

One problem with current fillings is that they sometimes become loose or fall out and have to be replaced. Researchers from China's Zhejiang University and Xiamen University wanted to overcome this by finding a way to make tooth enamel repair itself. They made a gel that contained teeny clusters of calcium and phosphate, the key components of natural tooth enamel.

To test out their gel, the researchers first layered it on crystalline hydroxyapatite, a substance similar to the enamel in our teeth. They found that the calcium phosphate clusters in the gel fused onto the material, something made possible by the diminutive size of the clusters; scientists have previously tried using larger clusters but had limited success.

Next, they used human teeth (not still attached to their owners), first damaging the enamel with acid and then coating them in the gel. The teeth were then placed in conditions that replicated those found inside the human mouth for 48 hours.

"Fussy Eater"

Junk Food Diet

A teen who ate nothing but fries, chips and other junk food for years slowly went blind as a result of his poor diet, according to a new report of the case.

The case highlights a perhaps little-known fact about poor diets: In addition to being tied to obesity, heart disease and cancer, they "can also permanently damage the nervous system, particularly vision," according to the report, published today (Sept. 2) in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

The teen was reportedly a "fussy eater," and blood tests showed he had anemia and low levels of vitamin B12, the report said. He was treated with injections of vitamin B12 along with advice on how to improve his diet.

However, by age 15, he developed hearing loss and vision problems, but doctors couldn't seem to find the cause - results from an MRI and eye exam were normal.

These deficiencies prompted doctors to ask the teen about the foods he ate. "The patient confessed that, since elementary school, he would not eat certain textures of food," the authors, from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, wrote in the report. He told doctors that the only things he ate were fries, chips - specifically, Pringles - white bread, processed ham slices and sausage.

Exhibition Pullings Statue

Japan

Organisers of a Japanese art exhibition who withdrew a statue symbolising "comfort women" defended their decision on Monday as justified given a crisis in ties between Japan and South Korea and arson threats, but opponents decried it as censorship.

The term comfort women is a Japanese euphemism for women, many of them Korean, who were forced to work in Japan's World War Two brothels.

The issue of the women is highly emotive for people in both countries, whose relations remains overshadowed by Japan's 1910-1945 colonisation of the Korean peninsula.

Japan says the issue was settled by past agreements and apologies, most recently a 2015 deal under which Japan apologised and gave 1 billion yen to a fund to help the surviving women.

The artwork - "Statue of a Girl of Peace," by South Korean sculptors Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung - attracted a flood of complaints within days of the Aug. 1 opening of the Aichi Triennale art festival in central Japan, and it was pulled after a number of "terror threats" by phone and by email, the governor of Aichi prefecture said.

Different Breeds Have Different Brains

Dogs

As humans have gone, so have their canine companions. But a new study shows the subtle ways our long-lasting partnership has molded the noggins of our dogs. Different breeds have slightly different brains from one another, the study found-differences that seem to be linked not just to the shape and size of the breed, but also the specific behaviors they were bred for.

Lead researcher Erin Hecht, an assistant professor in the department of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University, had been interested in studying dogs as a window into the evolution of brains for years, dating back to her grad school days. But it wasn't until she collaborated with Marc Kent, a veterinary neurologist at the University of Georgia at Athens, that she got her wish.

Kent provided Hecht with a treasure trove of brain scans taken from good boys and girls who had gotten an MRI but turned out to have no neurological problems. With these scans, Hecht's team was able to closely compare the brains of 62 purebred dogs from 33 different breeds. What they found might seem obvious at first glance, but it highlights how tethered dogs have become to humankind.

"Our basic finding is that different breeds of dogs have different brain anatomy," Hecht told Gizmodo by phone. The team's findings were published Monday in the Journal of Neuroscience.

One example, Hecht said, involved dogs bred to be good at flushing out and visually tracking animals like birds through an environment, such as golden retrievers. And when the team compared these dogs to other breeds, they appeared to have key differences in brain regions linked to coordination, eye movement, and spatial navigation-everything you'd need to be a good tracker.

Mineral Found

Wedderburn Meteorite

A mineral never seen in nature has been found in a scan of a meteorite found by the side of a road in Australia.

The Wedderburn meteorite is a 210g piece of space rock which was found near a remote mining town in Victoria in 1951.

Caltech (California Institute of Technology) researchers have scanned the rock and found a mineral - 'edscottite' - which has never been seen in nature.

Researchers now believe that the space rock came from the core of another planet, destroyed in an ancient collision.

A team from Caltech scanned a small portion of the meteorite for rare minerals in 2018, and found a mineral seen in iron smelters, but never in nature.
