Joe Bob Briggs: Legislating Lethal Ladies Leggings (Taki's Magazine)
I have seen the future, and it's a lot more than just butts in jersey knit cotton. It's Lycra-blend racer-back tank tops, breathable stretch-knit eco-blend loungewear finished with aloe vera on a yoga romper, and, yes, even a new generation of polyester. There are engineers in Colombia creating microfibers so thin and durable that they'll be both beloved by Olympic swimmers and decried as pornography by butt-focused school boards. My message to the anti-leggings armies is: Surrender now. Your cause is already lost.

One of the few blips on Bill Murray's CV is the 2004 Garfield movie, for which he provided the voice of the languorous feline. Murray signed up for it in the mistaken belief that the script was by one of the Coen brothers (close: Joel Cohen, writer of Daddy Day Camp, had a hand in it). Still, it was worth the error when he got the chance to play himself in the comedy-horror Zombieland. Asked on his deathbed whether he has any regrets, he sighs: "Garfield, maybe?" Perhaps in the upcoming Zombieland follow-up he will reveal why he went on to appear also in the Garfield sequel.
Although considered a critical success upon release in August 1939, this film failed to make a profit for MGM until the 1949 re-release. A ratings success when it was first shown on CBS in 1956, it became an annual TV tradition. What is the title of this 80-year-old movie?
The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Widely considered to be one of the greatest films in cinema history, it is the best-known and most commercially successful adaptation of L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Directed primarily by Victor Fleming (who left the production to take over the troubled Gone with the Wind), the film stars Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale alongside Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, and Bert Lahr.
Characterized by its legendary use of Technicolor (although not being the first to use it), fantasy storytelling, musical score, and memorable characters, the film has become an American pop culture icon. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, but lost to Gone with the Wind, also directed by Fleming. It did win in two other categories: Best Original Song for "Over the Rainbow" and Best Original Score by Herbert Stothart. While the film was considered a critical success upon release in August 1939, it failed to make a profit for MGM until the 1949 re-release, earning only $3,017,000 on a $2,777,000 budget, not including promotional costs, which made it MGM's most expensive production at that time.
MGM sold the rights to televise the film to CBS for $225,000 per broadcast. The film was first shown on television on November 3, 1956 as the last installment of the Ford Star Jubilee. The film was a ratings success with a Nielsen rating of 33.9 and an audience share of 53%.
It was repeated on December 13, 1959 and gained an even larger television audience than before with a Nielsen rating of 36.5 and an audience share of 58% and became an annual television tradition.

The Wizard of Oz. The film cost $4 million to produce and distribute but only returned $3 million in its initial release, which was a shame because "The Wizard of Oz" was a triumph on all other fronts. It was nominated for Best Picture but lost out to an inferior movie called, "Gone With the Wind." At the time "The Wizard of Oz" cost more to produce than any previous film. The movie is high on most critic's lists of the best films of the 20th century.

I didn't get anything *on* our 38th wedding anniversary, but on Saturday my husband bought me a 2017 Ford F-150 king-cab-bells-and-whistles-certified-used truck, !9K miles, $16K under KBB value, with max KBB value for his 2012 Subaru Outback (we didn't need to buy but the numbers were right and the stars aligned) for the RV trailer we're going to buy soon. First anniversary in years that I haven't received jewelry. I'll take it.

• When Irene Daye, the singer for Gene Krupa's band, retired, Anita O'Day took over for her. One day, someone asked her for her autograph, which she was happy to give. Unfortunately, after the person had gotten her autograph and the two had parted, Ms. O'Day heard the autograph-seeker mutter, "Aw, she ain't Irene!" Ms. O'Day then looked back, and she saw the autograph-seeker tear out a page from the autograph book and throw it away.
• Band leader Doc Severinsen, most famous as the band leader on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, and his wife, Emily, were fighting and screaming in a hotel room when he noticed a paper being slipped under the door. The paper was a note from some people requesting an autograph. Doc and Emily opened the door and signed some autographs, and then they closed the door and started fighting and screaming again.
Automobiles
• Following the wartime austerity of World War II and the rise of making much money playing rock and roll, some British performers began - of course - spending money on cars. British jazz musician George Melly and early British rocker Tommy Steele met backstage once, and Mr. Steele learned that Mr. Melly did not have a car. Mr. Melly remembers, "He looked at me with the sort of pity usually reserved for the badly deformed."
• Wynonie Harris was a rhythm and blues star of the 1940s and 1950s who made a lot of money and spent a lot of money. He bought two Cadillacs and hired two chauffeurs, and people used to go out on the sidewalk at 4 a.m. when he left the Baby Grand in Harlem after a performance just to see which Cadillac he would choose to ride home in.

• Lucas Silveira was born female, but later he became the transgender guitarist and singer of the music group the Cliks. Even when he was a little girl, he knew that he wanted to be a boy. He wanted his mother to cut his hair short, and whenever he had to wear a dress, he screamed. However, one very happy experience occurred when he was seven or eight years old and living in a Portuguese village. He says, "My parents took me to this festival. I was playing with a bunch of kids, and these two little girls I was playing with thought I was a boy - so I just went along with it. They were like, 'We need to go to the bathroom,' and I was like, 'Well, I need to go to the bathroom, too.' And they went, 'Well, you're a boy, you can pee over there' - up against the wall. And I literally pretended to pee up against the wall because, hey, that's what boys do. But I went with it. And I remember how happy I was in that moment."
• Tribe 8 is an all-lesbian punk bank from San Francisco. One problem that they run into while on tour is getting bathroom privileges - sometimes when they go into the women's bathroom women will tell them that they are in the wrong bathroom. Their appearance really does sometimes confuse people about their gender. Vocalist Lynn Breedlove says, "Little old ladies will come in the women's room behind us, and then they'll pop out and look at the sign on the door." Once, an old man followed them into the men's room because he thought that they were men. Ms. Breedlove says, "He jumped out." Rhythm guitarist Lynn Feather has actually lifted her shirt to show that she has breasts and to prove that she is in the correct bathroom. The band wrote a song about this problem; of course, the song is titled "Wrong Bathroom."
• Roy Henderson once started practicing some vocal exercises in an empty cloakroom, thinking that no one could hear him. However, he was startled to hear a toilet flushing, followed shortly by a man coming out of a door at one end of the cloakroom. "I'm extremely sorry," Mr. Henderson said. "I hope I didn't disturb you." The man replied, "On the contrary, I found it quite helpful."

Planned Parenthood unveiled a list of musicians - ranging from Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande to the Foo Fighters and Halsey - over the weekend who are "standing with Planned Parenthood" in a new social media campaign aimed at boosting their mailing list via a petition they hope music fans will sign. The reproductive-rights organization posted a list of over 100 artists who support Planned Parenthood's mission, specifically their "Bans Off My Body" initiative (which kicked off in July) in the wake of recent legislative efforts across the country in various states that seek to roll back abortion rights.
Some of the names of the list (www.istandwithpp.org/bans-off-my-body/band-together) are big female stars such as Lady Gaga and Lizzo, while other artists who have signed on in support are male, via bands such as Foo Fighters and Death Cab for Cutie.
The 1975, who railed against Alabama's abortion laws in May at the state's Hangout Festival, are also represented on the list of supporting bands.
According to Planned Parenthood's website, "musicians across the country are standing in solidarity with Planned Parenthood….they're saying access to sexual and reproductive health care is about the same type of freedom that allows them to create music and speak their truth - because no one is free unless they control their own body."
To sign the petition and learn more, visit BansOffMyBody.org, and see the full list of musicians who have signed their names on in support of Planned Parenthood right here.
Only 3% of the top 100 grossing films from 2007 to 2018 featured Latino actors in lead or co-lead roles, according to a new study conducted by USC Annenberg's Inclusion Initiative in partnership with the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP).
What's more, only 4.5% of all speaking characters across all films were Latino, despite the demographic representing the largest ethnic group in America. Latinos make up 18.3% of the U.S. population, and according to the study, 77% of the 50 U.S. states and 2 territories have populations with a higher percentage of Latinos than what is currently seen in Hollywood films.
The study also dove into an analysis of the stereotypes of the speaking roles Latinos often get in film, finding their roles are typically portraying characters who are poor, isolated or criminals.
And the representation of speaking roles for Latinos in film has not improved in the last 10 years.
It doesn't get any better behind the camera either. When looking at 1,200 of the top-grossing films from 2007 to 2018, the study found that 4% of the U.S. directors were Latino. In the same batch of films during that period, one out of every 1,335 was a Latina.
The 45th season of "Saturday Night Live" has announced its first round of hosts for the fall 2019 season. Kicking off the fall will be Woody Harrelson with performer Billie Eilish on September 28; Phoebe Waller-Bridge with Taylor Swift on October 5; David Harbour with Camila Cabello on October 12; Kristen Stewart on November 21; and Eddie Murphy on December 21.
Notably, this is former "SNL" cast member Eddie Murphy's first hosting gig since 1984. At just 18 years old, Murphy joined the cast of the variety show in 1980, impressing his colleagues so much that the actor was actually tapped to host an episode despite being a member of the cast. Murphy, who did make an appearance for the show's 2015 40th-anniversary special, avoided "SNL" for 25 years after then-series-newbie David Spade cracked a joke about Murphy's back-to-back film flops in 1990.
The musical guests accompanying Murphy and Stewart, who is returning to host for the second time, have yet to be announced. Emmy nominees Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag") and David Harbour ("Stranger Things") will both be making their SNL debuts. Woody Harrelson will make his fourth appearance as host. (SNL recently re-released a funny 1992 sketch featuring a young Harrelson, titled "Take Your Shirt Off.")
Rosa Parks and Sally Ride are joining an impressive list of famous females who have been made into Barbies.
The two women, who both played profound roles in history, are being added to the brand's Inspiring Women series. The two new dolls were introduced online Monday.
The collectible Rosa Parks doll features the courageous risk-taker in a floral print dress with a gray coat, white gloves and small black clutch handbag.
The Sally Ride doll, a tribute to the first American woman in space, is featured in a NASA flight suit with headset, helmet and boots.
Each collectible costs $30.99 and includes the doll and accessories, a doll stand, and a certificate of authenticity.
A Brexit mural by celebrated street artist Banksy appears to have been painted over.
The side of a building that had borne a famous painting of a worker chipping away one of the golden stars from the European Union's flag - symbolizing Britain's impending exit from the bloc - was covered in white paint Monday. Scaffolding had been erected over the weekend at the building in the southern British port city of Dover.
It was unclear what exactly had happened to the mural. The Godden Gaming Organization, which owns the building, previously said it was exploring options to remove, maintain or sell the artwork.
Emails to a Banksy representative and to Dover's local council seeking clarification about the fate of the artwork went unanswered Monday, a national holiday in Britain.
Thailand's palace has released rare images and a biography of the king's newly anointed royal consort, including both candid and action-packed photos of her aiming a weapon on a firing range, piloting a plane, and preparing to parachute.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn bestowed the rank of "Chao Khun Phra" or noble consort on the 34-year-old former army nurse Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi on his 67th birthday in July. She is the first woman to receive the noble rank in nearly a century.
The images and details provide an unusually intimate glimpse into the private lives of the powerful, ultra-wealthy and inscrutable monarchy, which is protected by a royal insult law that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison per count.
Born in the northern province of Nan, she graduated from the Royal Thai Army Nursing College, trained as a pilot in Thailand and abroad, and served in the king's royal bodyguard unit, reaching the rank of major-general in May.
The ceremony took place mere days after a stunning announcement that Vajiralongkorn had married Queen Suthida Vajiralongkorn na Ayudhya, a former flight attendant and deputy commander of the monarch's security detail.
It might not be obvious at the supermarket, but the banana industry is fighting to protect the most popular variety of the fruit from a destructive fungus.
A disease that ravages banana crops has made its long-dreaded arrival in Latin America, the biggest exporter of the crop. That's reigniting worries about the global market's dependence on a single type of banana, the Cavendish, which is known for its durability in shipping.
For years, scientists have said big banana companies like Chiquita and Dole would eventually need to find new banana varieties as the disease spread in countries in Asia and elsewhere. Then this month, the fungus was confirmed in Colombia, one of the top exporters in Latin America, prompting officials in the country to declare a state of emergency.
Banana industry watchers say it's more proof the Cavendish's days are numbered, but that there's still plenty of time to find alternatives.
While all sorts of bananas are grown around the world for domestic consumption, the ones shipped to places including the United States and the European Union are mostly Cavendishes. It may seem odd that the world banana market would hitch its fortunes to a single variety, but mass producing just one kind is a way to keep costs down, which also helps make bananas so widely available.
