• While fighting in World War I as a member of the African-American Hell Fighters of the 369th Regiment, painter Horace Pippin was wounded by a German sniper as he dove into a shell hole. A French soldier came by, looked in the hole, then was shot by the sniper and fell dead on top of Mr. Pippin, who had lost so much blood that he was unable to move the French soldier off of himself. Eventually, Mr. Pippin was rescued and a steel plate was put in his right shoulder. Of course, his right arm was weak and stiff after the injury, and it looked as if he would never create art again. However, at home one day he noticed a poker resting in the fire that kept his house warm. The tip of the poker was white-hot, and Mr. Pippin discovered that he could hold the cool end of the poker with his right arm, rest the poker on his knee, and create a burnt drawing by using his left arm to hold a wooden plank up to the white-hot poker. He managed to create several burnt-wood panels that way, including his first: Losing the Way.
• In 1897, José Clemente Orozco was a 14-year-old boy living in Mexico City, Mexico. Like other boys his age, he was curious about fireworks and gunpowder, and when he was alone one day, he experimented. Suddenly, the gunpowder exploded, blowing three fingers off his left hand and also badly injuring his right hand. Young Clemente ended up having his left hand amputated, and he nearly lost his right hand as well. In addition, his sight and hearing were damaged. For the rest of his life, he was forced to wear thick glasses, and he never regained hearing in his left ear. Nevertheless, he became one of Mexico’s foremost painters, gaining special renown for his murals. In 1947, he won Mexico’s National Prize in the Arts and Sciences, and when he died in 1949, he was given the honor of burial in the Rotunda de los Hombres Illustres (Rotunda of the Illustrious Men).
• Al Capp, creator of the comic strip Li’l Abner, had a wooden leg, which occasionally created embarrassing situations for him. One morning, at the Savoy Hotel in London, he lay in bed as a waiter took his breakfast order. Because Mr. Capp was well covered with bedding, the waiter could not tell that he had only one leg, but the waiter did notice the foot of Mr. Capp’s wooden leg, clothed in a shoe and a stocking, sticking out from under the bed. In fact, the waiter stared at it. Becoming aware that Mr. Capp was watching him stare at the leg, the waiter recovered his composure, finished taking Mr. Capp’s order, then said, “Very good, sir. And what will the other gentleman have?”
• Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the little person who became a great Impressionist painter, once did a series of lithographs featuring singer Yvette Guilbert, who was not beautiful. As Ms. Guilbert looked over the lithographs, she noticed that Mr. Toulouse-Lautrec had made some things grotesque, and so she said to him, “Really, you have a genius for depicting deformity!” He replied, “But of course.”
Photography
• As a wildlife photographer, M. Timothy O’Keefe had to be a patient man, as it took days or weeks to photograph the scenes he wanted. He also had to be quick, as taking the actual photograph took a fraction of a second. To focus his camera ahead of time, he used to tape his driver license to something in the scene he would photograph, such as a tree limb, focus on the license, then remove it. In 1979, he wanted to photograph an owl with a freshly caught mouse, so he picked a tree branch where an owl might enjoy a meal, focused his camera, then waited in a blind. One night, he heard a squeak of a mouse, then the owl settling on the branch. He tripped the shutter, four strobe lights illuminated the branch, and he had the photograph he wanted. Well, almost. Yes, he had photographed the owl and the mouse, but he had also photographed his driver license, which he had forgotten to remove from the tree limb.

The Corporation of Trinity House of Deptford Strond, also known as Trinity House (and formally as The Master Wardens and Assistants of the Guild Fraternity or Brotherhood of the most glorious and undivided Trinity and of St Clement in the Parish of Deptford Strond in the County of Kent), is the official authority for lighthouses in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. Trinity House is also responsible for the provision and maintenance of other navigational aids, such as lightvessels, buoys, and maritime radio/satellite communication systems. It is also an official deep sea pilotage authority, providing expert navigators for ships trading in Northern European waters.
Trinity House is also a maritime charity, dispersing funds for the welfare of retired seamen, the training of young cadets and the promotion of safety at sea; for the financial year ending in March 2013 it spent approximately £6.5 million in furtherance of its charitable objectives.
The corporation was founded in 1514. Its first master was Thomas Spert (later Sir), sailing master of Henry VIII's flagship Mary Rose and of Henry Grace à Dieu.

Lighthouses. Of course I did not know that. I guess the lighthouses of Ireland and Scotland are under the authority of some other entity? A number of prominent Britons have belonged to the guild, including Winston Churchill, who became an Elder Brother of Trinity House after he served in the British cabinet as First Lord of the Admiralty prior to, and during, WWI. Officially, the Master of the Corporation is the Princess Royal, who is currently the Queen’s daughter HRH Princess Anne. Anne currently 14th in the line of succession to her mother’s throne.

Basically, they are in charge of all the lighthouses, buoys and beacons in the UK waters, provide pilotage there, and look after retired UK merchant mariners, the salty old seadogs that they are...
~~~~~
The Brits also have a 'Charity' that is responsible for all of their SAR Lifeboat Stations and the crews are all, get this, volunteers... Plus, they depend largely on fundraisers for their operating costs... (Seriously)
Introducing, the renowned 'Royal National Lifeboat Institution'...
The RNLI is world famous and their lifeboats and crews are respected worldwide by those in that business... Including the US Coast Guard... (I worked for a USCG CPO whose grandfather was an RNLI lifeboat coxswain at St. Ives, Cornwall, and he earned back in the late '30s their Gold Lifesaving Medal)...
Interesting Fact: The RNLI gives names to all of their lifeboats (unlike the USCG which uses number designations only). They also used the USCG designed 44' motor lifeboat (made in the UK)... The 44' lifeboat at the mouth of Dublin Bay (the RNLI provides services to Ireland, as well) because it was a USCG design boat stationed in Ireland, the RNLI named it the 'John F. Kennedy'... and here she is.
Ours looked like this... (but I really like the RNLI scheme)
(I ran a 44' in Maine and then again on Lake Michigan)
~~~~~
But, back to lighthouses, yeah, I did that, too... I'm proud to have been a 'Keeper' (the CG called them 'Officers in Charge') and then later on a small team that tended 17 automated lighthouses (and a bazillion smaller lights) in northern Lakes Michigan and Huron... Speaking of which, as all lighthouses in the US are now automated, I'm one of the last of the 'Keepers'...
... at this 'Light and Fog Signal Station', Whitehead Island, Maine...
Sweet duty, I'm tellin' ya... Built in 1804 and, yes, it is haunted... Nothing really scary, merely mischievous and noisy at times... I got used to it... kinda like having a pet.

Info: “This reissue combines the first two volumes from the Exotic Blues & Rhythm compilation series named Katanga! and Ahbe Casabe! with two additional bonus tracks. This album is a colorful garden of delights consisting of R'n'B and rock'n'roll based songs from the 1940s to the early 1960s that all have this slightly exotic, dark and mystical feeling from the melody structures and instrumentation. Most of the tunes at hand sound astonishingly fresh and timeless. EDDIE COLE & THREE PEPPERS with their hypnotizing groover ‘Police’ for example present a Caribbean mento with a mambo and rhythm'n'blues feel. The beat will drag you directly from your seat and make you swing on the dancefloor. This piece finds its roots in the late 1940s and demonstrates impressively how far even the predecessors of rock music already got in their development. The simple yet haunting lead vocal harmony makes this song a steaming hot all-time fave. And this is only one out of 26 rare gems.”
Lute FP, a fan, wrote: Another oh shit moment in my foray into what’s happening in Mongolia. Apparently this label Captain High Records plunders the depths of old-time psychedelia, rock-n-roll, R&B, and who knows what else. So here we have a collection reminiscent of a Tarantino or John Waters soundtrack. This is 40s through 50s rock-n-roll and R&B salted with latin rhythms, the common denominator being a genre I was formerly unaware of called ‘exotica’, which just seems to mean clever and weird arrangements designed to tease your earbuds and get your feet tapping. This is some seriously good stuff.

Zelda Williams is not here for the Trumps using her late father’s words for their own gain.
After Donald Trump (R-Failure)’s son Eric (R-Incompetent) resurfaced a clip of the late Robin Williams riffing on Joe Biden in a 2009 HBO comedy special, the comedian’s only daughter urged the first son to “look up what he said about your Dad. I did. Promise you, it’s even more ‘savage.’”
She added, "Gentle reminder that the dead can't vote, but the living can."
But Robin, a long-time supporter of the Democratic Party, went after Donald too. While doing standup in 2012, the Oscar winner described the then-Apprentice reality star as a “scary man,” quipping that the real estate developer “plays monopoly with real f***ing buildings.”
"This is a man who said ‘my daughter is hot,’” Robin, who died in 2014, said. “Even people in Arkansas went ‘that's f***ing wrong.’”
Larry Wilmore is heading back to late-night with a new show on Peacock.
The streamer has ordered the Untitled Larry Wilmore Show (w/t) and will pair it with The Amber Ruffin Show to launch a weekly topical late-night block.
It marks the Black-ish exec producer’s return to late-night television following his stint as a correspondent on The Daily Show between 2006 and 2014 and The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, which ran for two seasons on Comedy Central, ending in 2016.
Peacock has ordered 11 episodes of the show, which is set to launch in September. It will be exec produced by Wilmore, who has an overall production deal with Universal TV, o Miller, Tony Hernandez, Brooke Posch, David Miner and Michael Rotenberg. It will be produced by Jax Media and Universal Television.
The Amber Ruffin Show will also debut in September. The streamer has ordered nine half-hour episodes of the show, which will see the Late Night with Seth Meyers writer provide a “smart” and “silly” take on the news of the week.
Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” saw a noticeable sales bump over the weekend thanks to a viral video from Twins React, where 22-year-olds Tim and Fred Williams filmed their reaction to hearing the song for the first time.
In the video, Tim and Fred start off acutely tuned in to the song’s slow rhythmic beginning and lose it by the iconic drum kick in the latter half, as so many have done upon first hearing Collins’ 1981 hit.
The video apparently prompted viewers to do the same: On Friday and Saturday, “In the Air Tonight” saw an increase in sales of over 1,100 percent compared to the previous two days. The song saw over 4,600 digital sales in those two days, compared to a few hundred the weekend prior, according to data from Alpha Data. Sales from Friday and Saturday exceed nearly the rest of the month prior combined.
Somewhat surprisingly given the sales boost though, streams on the song seem unaffected by the viral video so far, hovering between 200,000 and about 240,000 streams each day since mid-July.
Disney Television Studios has launched a major rebrand of its three studios, 20th Century Fox Television, Fox 21 TV Studios and ABC Studios/ABC Signature. The move comes nearly 18 months after Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of key 21st Century Fox assets and seven months after the Disney-owned film companies — 20th Century Fox Studios and Fox Searchlight Pictures — dropped “Fox” in January to become 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures.
ABC Studios and its cable/streaming subsidiary ABC Signature, led by president Jonnie Davis, will merge into one studio entitled ABC Signature. Fox 21 Television Studios, led by president Bert Salke, will be renamed Touchstone Television. 20th Century Fox Television, led by president Carolyn Cassidy, will become 20th Television. Because they are all part of Disney TV Studios, the divisions also all dropped “studios” from their monikers.
Removal of Fox was agreed to when the transaction between Disney and 21st Century Fox was negotiated to avoid confusion in the marketplace. While rebranding 20th Century Fox TV by simply dropping “Fox” was straightforward, renaming Fox 21 TV Studios posed a conundrum, leading to the delay in the overall rebrand. The solution came in the form of Touchstone Television, bringing back a legacy Disney television brand that was retired in 2007. While Fox 21’s name is gone, the new Touchstone TV logo keeps its signature typewriter font for continuity.
The new graphic logos and “motion end cards” will be rolled out in new episodes of Disney Television Studios programming going forward. The changes are effective immediately, though the new names and logos may not be fully integrated until the end of the year. Library titles and episodes broadcast before the rebrand will remain unchanged.
Record numbers of Americans are renouncing their citizenship according to numbers reported by a New York accountancy firm.
Bambridge Accountants reports that 5,816 people gave up US citizenship in the first half of 2020 — a 1,210 per cent increase on the previous six months in which only 444 cases were recorded.
The first two quarters of 2020 also rank as having the first and second highest numbers on record at 2,909 and 2,907 respectively.
In the whole of 2019, a total of only 2,072 Americans gave up their citizenship.
In order to renounce their citizenship, Americans must pay a $2,350 government fee, and those based overseas must do so in person at a US Embassy.
A man in Louisiana serving a life sentence for selling less than a gram of marijuana is due to be released from prison, his lawyer has said.
Derek Harris, who is a military veteran, was arrested in 2008 for selling 0.69 grams of marijuana — an amount worth less than $30 (£23) — to an undercover officer who came to his door.
Harris was initially convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Then in 2012, he was resentenced to life in prison under the Habitual Offender Law, which grants judges the freedom to impose longer sentences on defendants with previous charges against them.
Harris’ previous offences were nonviolent.
Prosecutors in Vermillion Parish agreed to free Harris, who has already served nine years in prison, after the Louisiana Supreme Court granted him a new hearing last month.
For some people, it’s the calm before the storm that causes them distress during rough weather seasons. It’s long been recognized that sudden changes in weather and air composition, such as smog setting in from bush fires, could bring on asthma attacks but new research has identified that for an unusual respiratory condition called thunderstorm asthma, there’s a spike in people presenting to hospital days before the storm itself hits.
The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, looked at atmospheric and lightning data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) providing information from counties in the continental United States from 1999 to 2012. They combined the information with records of insurance claims and comorbidity data from Medicare patients aged 65 and over, specifically focusing on visits to the Emergency Department (ED) regarding respiratory illness.
Using a statistical model, they looked for correlations between the climatological and health records and found that before the onset of thunderstorms, temperature and concentrations of particulate matter in the air spiked. These levels dropped on the day of the storm and continued to drop as the storm progressed.
Their results also revealed that in the three days leading up to a storm, the average number of visits to the ED per 1 million Medicare patients increased, particularly among those with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which are considered comorbid factors for thunderstorm asthma.
Normally, the magnificent plains of Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve are crowded with international tourists hoping to see a lion hunt during the annual wildebeest migration - but this year COVID-19 means Kenyans had it all to themselves.
That's good news for animal watchers but bad for conservationists who rely on the funds to pay for rangers and protection. By June, Kenya had already lost 80 billion Kenyan shillings ($740 million)in tourism revenue, about half of last year's total, due to the coronavirus crisis.
This weekend, thousands of mostly Kenyan visitors travelled to the park to witness the migration. There were few foreigners - Kenya shut down international flights in March and only resumed them on Aug. 1.
So far Kenya has just over 26,000 confirmed cases of the disease and 420 deaths. Tourist resorts are required to observe strict social distancing and hygiene measures but have been allowed to reopen.
