Andrew Tobias: American Dream Week Raffi Krikorian "was one of the geniuses at Twitter and Uber. When I saw the press release [announcing that was hired to be of the he Democratic National Committee, I pinged Megan Smith, formerly Chief Technology Officer of the United States. "Hey, do you know him? How are you with this choice?" Megan, who's been privately and constructively critical of the DNC in the past, replied: "He is beyond extraordinary. We are so lucky." This buoys my spirits, and I hope yours. Technology underpins everything.

The Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club (first known as The Alice B. Toklas Memorial Democratic Club) is a San Francisco-based association and political action committee for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Democrats.
The club is currently active in its endorsement of Democratic candidates in the San Francisco area.
Founded in 1971 by activists Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, Beth Elliott, and Jim Foster, it was the first organization for gay Democrats in the United States. It is named after lesbian writer and San Francisco native Alice B. Toklas. The club has been known for its more moderate approach and in 1976, local LGBT activists broke off to form the more progressive Harvey Milk Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Democratic Club.

Ah, Sun-flower! weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the Sun,
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the traveller's journey is done:
Where the Youth pined away with desire
And the pale Virgin shrouded in snow
Arise from their graves, and aspire
Where my Sun-flower wishes to go.

"Speechless" was one of the several shows honored at last night's 2017 Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards.
According to TVLine, the ABC comedy took home the trophy for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming, beating its fellow nominees Disney Junior's "Doc McStuffins," Disney Channel's "Elena of Avalor," HBO's "Sesame Street" and PBS' "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" and "Odd Squad."
Shortly after the winners were announced, "Speechless" star John Ross Bowie took to Instagram to thank the Television Critics Association for the award and express his gratitude to all the critics who have supported the show since it was launched last September. Bowie, along with his co-stars Mason Cook, Micah Fowler and Cedric Yarbrough, attended the awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Filming for Season 2 of the Scott Silveri-created series is set to start next week. According to Cook and Fowler's recent social media posts, shooting for the new season will begin on Monday, Aug. 7.

The Newport Jazz Festival wrapped up Sunday with a closing performance from the legendary hip-hop band "The Roots" as a new artistic director put his stamp on one of the world's most venerable jazz carnivals.
The three-day festival in Rhode Island, which began in 1954, has been headlined over the years by jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane under the stewardship of its founder-promoter George Wein.
Since Wein stepped down last year, new artistic director Christian McBride has introduced a more eclectic line-up, featuring soul, Afro-Cuban and DJs as well as more traditional jazz stars such as Branford Marsalis who appeared on Saturday night.
McBride, who is himself a Grammy Award-winning bassist, said he was proud to feature "The Roots," a band regarded as godfathers of hip-hop and best known in the United States as the house band of late-night comedian Jimmy Fallon.
"The one thing I think all these musicians have in common is that they all strive and achieve excellence," McBride told AFP.
Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood revealed he was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year.
"There was a week when everything hung in the balance and it could have been curtains - time to say goodbye," the 70-year-old rocker told Mail on Sunday's Event Magazine.. "You never know what is going to happen."
Wood, who gave up smoking one year ago when his twin daughters were born, told Event he was skeptical he could escape 50 years of chain smoking unscathed. When he went to the doctor in May, he asked for a more in-depth check up. The doctor told Wood he had found cancer in the guitarist's lung. After a week of tests, it was determined that the cancer had not spread.
"I made up my mind that if it had spread I wasn't going to go through chemo, I wasn't going to use that bayonet in my body," Wood told Event about his week of waiting to find out if the cancer had metastasized. He also said he was concerned about what would happen to his legendary locks if he had to undergo chemotherapy.
And while he opted out of chemo, he did have part of his lung removed.
US television network ABC denied on Sunday that it had cancelled comedian Tim Allen's popular sitcom "Last Man Standing" due to its conservative politics.
Fans of the show - and Allen himself - were angered when ABC announced in May that one of its most-watched scripted series, a solid ratings draw, was being brought to an end.
Allen's character, an outspoken conservative, echoed the political positions of the 64-year-old actor, a Republican who attended Donald Trump's (R-Con Man) inauguration.
The announcement sparked a firestorm of criticism on social media, with Allen tweeting that he had been "stunned and blindsided" by Disney-owned ABC's decision.
"Politics had absolutely nothing to do with it," ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey told the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.
Toilet paper featuring old tweets by Donald Trump (R-Crooked) appears to have sold out on Amazon.
The toilet paper - described as "a collection of ten of Donald Trump's tweets that we deemed were most suitable for flushing" - was sold by a company called Toilet Tweets and fulfilled by Amazon. A single roll was being sold for $11.99 as of Friday, according to the Hill. On Monday, the toilet paper was listed as "currently unavailable" for purchase.
"Do you think Putin will be going to The Miss Universe Pageant in November in Moscow - if so, will he become my new best friend?" read one 2013 tweet printed on the roll.
"Are you allowed to impeach a president for gross incompetence?" read another from 2014.
Toilet Tweets isn't the first company to pursue this kind of business idea. Similar rolls of toilet paper are still available for sale on Amazon, including a roll featuring Trump's face that a company called The Gag is currently selling for $12.95.

Staff at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) have been told to avoid using the term climate change in their work, with the officials instructed to reference "weather extremes" instead.
A series of emails obtained by the Guardian between staff at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a USDA unit that oversees farmers' land conservation, show that the incoming Trump administration has had a stark impact on the language used by some federal employees around climate change.
A missive from Bianca Moebius-Clune, director of soil health, lists terms that should be avoided by staff and those that should replace them. "Climate change" is in the "avoid" category, to be replaced by "weather extremes". Instead of "climate change adaption", staff are asked to use "resilience to weather extremes".
The primary cause of human-driven climate change is also targeted, with the term "reduce greenhouse gases" blacklisted in favor of "build soil organic matter, increase nutrient use efficiency". Meanwhile, "sequester carbon" is ruled out and replaced by "build soil organic matter".
In her email to staff, dated 16 February this year, Moebius-Clune said the new language was given to her staff and suggests it be passed on. She writes that "we won't change the modeling, just how we talk about it - there are a lot of benefits to putting carbon back in the sail [sic], climate mitigation is just one of them", and that a colleague from public affairs gave advice to "tamp down on discretionary messaging right now".
Silicon Valley's most high-profile backer of Donald Trump's (R-Crooked) presidential campaign has reportedly begun disparaging the President's erratic administration and even warning it may collapse in "disaster".
Even as many technology industry executives remained wary of Mr Trump's candidacy, PayPal founder Peter Thiel became a vocal supporter. Mr Thiel's vision of limited government aligns with a central plank of Republican orthodoxy, and his libertarian-minded aversion to foreign entanglements mirrors Mr Trump's isolationist stance. His backing of Mr Trump won him a speaking spot at the 2016 Republican National Convention in which Mr Trump officially secured his party's nomination.
When Donald Trump asked us to make America great again, he's not suggesting a return to the past - he's running to lead us back to that bright future," Mr Thiel said of Mr Trump, whom he called the only candidate to be "honest" about the fact that "fake culture wars only distract us from our economic decline."
But according to associates of Mr Thiel who spoke anonymously to BuzzFeed, the 49-year-old has soured on Mr Trump as his administration has churned through staffers, been engulfed by an investigation of potential ties between the campaign and Russia, and failed to register any significant legislative wins despite unified Republican control of Washington.
Researchers may have found the home town of Peter and two other apostles of Jesus near the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, an archaeologist said Monday.
Israeli and American archaeologists have likely uncovered the lost Roman city of Julias near the banks of the lake, also known as Lake Tiberias, Mordechai Aviam of Kinneret Institute for Galilean Archeaology said.
First century Roman historian Flavius Josephus wrote that Julias was built around 30 AD on the ruins of Bethsaid, a fishing village where Peter was born according to the Gospel of John.
Christians recognise Saint Peter, originally a fisherman, as one of the first followers of Jesus and the leader of the early Church following the ascension.
Two other apostles -- Philip and Peter's brother Andrew -- are also believed to have been born or lived in Bethsaida.
When 82-year-old Masako Wakamiya first began working she still used an abacus for maths -- today she is one of the world's oldest iPhone app developers, a trailblazer in making smartphones accessible for the elderly.
Frustrated by the lack of interest from the tech industry in engaging older people, she taught herself to code and set about doing it herself.
The over 60s, she insists, need to actively search out new skills to stay nimble.
She became interested in computers in the 1990s when she retired from her job as a bank clerk. It took her months to set up her first system, beginning with BBS messaging, a precursor to the internet, before building her skills on a Microsoft PC, and then Apple's Mac and iPhones.
Wakamiya learned the basics of coding and developed 'Hinadan' one of Japan's first dedicated app games for the over-60s -- she is now in such demand that this year Apple invited her to participate at their prestigious Worldwide Developers Conference, where she was the oldest app creator to take part.
