Gladstone: 5 Bafflingly Prudish Moments in History (Cracked)
Sex! Everybody's talking about it. Hell, everybody's doing it. I mean, not everybody, but there are 7 billion people on the planet. … Do you know that people were always having sex? It's true. That's how we got here. Generations and generations of sexual intercourse with penises and vaginas and stuff.

An honorary colonel in the U.S. Marines and an honorary lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, this performer is the only woman buried in the Special Forces cemetery at Ft. Bragg. What is her name?
Martha Raye (August 27, 1916 - October 19, 1994) was an American comic actress and standards singer who performed in movies, and later on television. She was honored in 1969 with an Academy Award as the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipient for her volunteer efforts and services to the troops.
In appreciation of her work with the USO during World War II and subsequent wars, special consideration was given to bury her in Arlington National Cemetery on her death, but on her request she was buried with full military honors in the Fort Bragg, North Carolina post cemetery as an honorary colonel in the U.S. Marines and an honorary lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. She is the only civilian buried at that location who receives military honors each Veterans' Day.

Way back in the early 80s, couple of pals took me to see
Charles Pierce at a small theater in West Hollywood.
Charles Pierce was an amazing female impressionist, with a remarkable repertoire. Quite a wonderful show and a memorable evening.
Adding to the festivities, at the table behind us were
Hayden Rorke (Dr. Bellows on I Dream Of Jeannie),
Richard Deacon (Mel Cooley on The Dick Van Dyke Show), and
Martha Raye.
Since it's LA, we just nodded in their direction, and left them alone, but I often wish I'd had a bit more to drink...
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by

The global ruler in premium pay-TV will soon offer its services in the US without requiring a traditional cable TV package. HBO is set to expand its $49-per-month internet bundle-available now as a trial through Comcast-and offer it through other cable and broadband providers, Bloomberg reports. The package will include cable TV and online access to HBO, as well as a limited basic cable channel lineup.
HBO has been hesitant in the past to offer its premium content outside of cable bundles, fearing that doing so might cannibalize its lucrative business with major cable companies. But given that there are now 10 million US households with internet access but no pay TV, HBO sees an opportunity to expand into many more homes via the web. HBO Go, its current online offering, is available only as a part of cable package in the US.
An internet bundle option could also help HBO tap into millions more homes outside the US, where cable TV penetration rates are much lower. HBO clearly still has a lot more room to grow.

After taking a hit in the ratings in its third outing last week, CBS' Halle Berry-fronted sci-fi drama "Extant" is moving back an hour, starting this week. The move will enable the show to avoid going head-to-head with summer's No. 1 show, NBC's "America's Got Talent."
"Extant," which had been airing Wednesdays at 9 p.m. behind "Big Brother," will swap timeslots with repeats of "Criminal Minds." The vet drama will now air at 9 p.m., its regular fall timeslot anyway, and will serve as a lead-in for "Extant."
While "Big Brother" is a strong demo performer for CBS, it hasn't always meshed well with scripted programming behind it, and the Eye would like to see how "Extant" fares with a more compatible - scripted drama - lead-in.
The "Extant" timeslot move also allows the series to avoid a head-to-head showdown with "America's Got Talent." Last week, the first time an original "Talent" faced "Extant," the NBC program trounced "Extant" in 18-49 (2.6 to 1.1) and total viewers (11.09 million to 6.48 million).
A new amusement park outside Rome celebrates the world of cinema, taking visitors back to the golden age of Italian film production when the Rome-based Cinecitta Studios - still in operation - were known as "Hollywood on the Tiber."
At a submarine set, visitors get into character by donning marine helmets and racing through an action-packed movie scene. These marines bark orders and frantically spin valves, trying to avert an impending disaster.
Fans of Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns will delight in the Western set, which features an Ennio Morricone soundtrack for make-believe cowboy showdowns. A 1920s New York set is inspired by Dante Ferretti's set work for the Martin Scorsese film, "Gangs of New York." Ferretti actually designed all the sets for the park.
But beyond the lights, camera and action, no amusement park is complete without some wild rides. Cinecitta World mixes roller coasters with the pleasure of cinematic recreation: a futuristic corkscrew roller coaster connected to a spaceship and a water coaster in an ancient Rome set.
Italy is not exactly known for its amusement parks - most tourists come to Rome to view real ancient ruins, like the Colosseum. But Cinecitta World's creators hope this park will coax tourists to tack an extra day onto their itineraries.

Maybe there's no hard feelings after all. Jay Leno is set to return to NBC's air on Thursday as a guest mentor on "Last Comic Standing."
Leno will help the five finalists on the standup comedy competition show prepare for performances as the competitors are winnowed in advance of the Aug. 14 finale.
Leno signed off as host of "The Tonight Show" in February. He helped execute a gracious transition for his successor, Jimmy Fallon, but he also let it be known that he was surprised to have been nudged off the show while he was still No. 1 in latenight.
Roseanne Barr, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Russell Peters are judges on this summer's incarnation of "Last Comic." Series is hosted by JB Smoove and exec produced by Wanda Sykes, Paige Hurwitz and Javier Winnik.
Revelations over the past few years about how U.S. security officials have the ability to track people through phone, email and other electronic records are making it harder for journalists to report on what the government is doing, two human rights groups say.
Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union said in a report issued Monday that access to data as detailed in leaks by former National Security Agency systems analyst Edward Snowden, coupled with the Obama administration's prosecution of people for leaking classified information, is having a chilling effect on reporters.
Ninety-two people, including 46 journalists, 42 lawyers and some present or retired national security officials, were interviewed for the report.
Reporters are turning to encryption technology that scrambles electronic communication with sources, although they worry the mere fact the government knows they are using encryption will raise suspicions. To counter monitoring of cellphones, some say they use throwaway phones. One reporter said he calls many sources at the time of a big story, just to protect the identity of the ones he used. Face-to-face contact is increasingly preferred.
One reporter, ABC's Brian Ross, said he's been tipped to say, "I'm a U.S. citizen, are you?" at the beginning of cellphone conversations because of a legal prohibition against monitoring calls by citizens.

Flooding is increasing in frequency along much of the U.S. coast, and the rate of increase is accelerating along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts, a team of federal government scientists found in a study released Monday.
The study examined how often 45 tide gauges along the country's shore exceeded National Weather Service flood thresholds across several decades. The researchers found that the frequency of flooding increased at 41 locations. Moreover, they found that the rate of increase was accelerating at 28 of those locations. The highest rates of increase were concentrated along the mid-Atlantic coast.
The thresholds are usually associated with minor flooding, also called nuisance flooding, which can overwhelm drainage systems, cause road closures and damage infrastructure not built to withstand frequent flooding or exposure to salt water. Such flooding is one of the more recognizable effects of rising seas, as opposed to less frequent but more damaging extreme storms, such as hurricanes, the scientists said.
In the 1950s, nuisance flooding occurred once every one to five years, the study found. By 2012, the frequency had increased to about once every three months at most NOAA gauges.

Genetically modified corn seeds are no longer protecting Brazilian farmers from voracious tropical bugs, increasing costs as producers turn to pesticides, a farm group said on Monday.
Producers want four major manufacturers of so-called BT corn seeds to reimburse them for the cost of spraying up to three coats of pesticides this year, said Ricardo Tomczyk, president of Aprosoja farm lobby in Mato Grosso state.
Large-scale farming in the bug-ridden tropics has always been a challenge, and now Brazil's government is concerned that planting the same crops repeatedly with the same seed technologies has left the agricultural superpower vulnerable to pest outbreaks and dependent on toxic chemicals.
Experts in the United States have also warned about corn production prospects because of a growing bug resistance to genetically modified corn. Researchers in Iowa found significant damage from rootworms in corn fields last year.
Admits To Facebook-Style Experimenting On Customers
OkCupid
OkCupid, a top U.S. matchmaking website, regularly mismatches users to test its technology, the IAC/InterActive Corp service revealed on Monday, weeks after Facebook Inc admitted to misleading users in a psychological study.
"When we tell people they are a good match, they act as if they are," co-founder Christian Rudder wrote in a blog post. "Even when they should be wrong for each other."
Conversely, couples told they were bad matches, even when OkCupid's algorithm showed the opposite, were less likely to exchange four messages.
An IAC spokeswoman said OkCupid planned to continue with the experiments, which are known in the business as A/B testing.
In June, Facebook users were outraged when it was reported that the world's largest social networking site had manipulated news feeds to see how viewing more positive or negative posts affected users' posting habits. The researcher who led the study apologized for the anxiety news of the experiments caused users, but stopped short of saying the company would halt the practice.

The enduring popularity of "little tiger" as a snack to accompany a beer in Vietnam means that cat owners live in constant fear of animal snatchers, despite an official ban.
At an unassuming restaurant next to a carwash in central Hanoi, a cat is prepared for hungry clients: drowned, shaved and burned to remove all fur before being cut up and fried with garlic.
Vietnam has forbidden the consumption of cats in an effort to encourage their ownership and keep the capital's rat population under control.
But there are still dozens of restaurants serving cat in Hanoi and it is rare to see felines roaming the streets -- most pet-owners keep them indoors or tied up out of fear of cat thieves.
"Little tiger" is typically enjoyed at the start of each lunar month, unlike dog meat which is eaten at the end.

Supporters of Venezuela's late socialist leader Hugo Chavez on Monday unveiled yet another novel way of keeping his memory alive - a font for typing in "El Comandante's" handwriting style.
The distinctive 'ChavezPro' font was launched by a group of young "anti-imperialists" to coincide with nationwide commemorations of the 60th anniversary of his birth.
Chavez's bold scrawl became famous to Venezuelans as he used to spend hours on national TV writing and drawing on boards and papers to explain policies, develop ideas and sign deals.
