Anecdotes

Education

• Leonardo da Vinci was a problem-solver in addition to being an artist. In his studies of human anatomy, he dissected human cadavers or parts of human cadavers, although embalming had not been invented yet. In doing this, he had to figure out how to dissect a human eyeball. After all, the inside of an eye is filled with a liquid jelly. Eventually, he discovered that he could harden the eyeball for dissection by coating it with egg white, then boiling it. Leonardo noted that this work was not pleasant - "passing the night hours in the company of these corpses, quartered and flayed and horrible to behold."

• Canadian figure skater Toller Cranston attended the Ιcole des Beaux-Arts, where he showed great talent as a painter, but failed a class in sculpture. He told his sculpture teacher, Joan Essar, "Look, I'm not really a sculptor. It's not my thing. As a matter of fact, I'm having a painting exhibition in Toronto." Ms. Essar and a couple of other art teachers looked at some of his paintings, which impressed them, then they asked him, "What do you want to be? An art teacher or an artist?" He replied that he wanted to be an artist, and they advised him, "Don't bother finishing school." He didn't.

• Early in his life, Marc Chagall attended Russia's Svantseva School, where his art teacher was Leon Bakst. Mr. Bakst could be a harsh critic of students' work, and after being harshly criticized, Mr. Chagall left the school for three months to study on his own. When he returned, he had made much progress. Mr. Bakst praised his art and even hung one of his paintings in the studio. About his famous pupil, Mr. Bakst said, "What I like about him is that after listening closely to my lessons he takes his paints and brushes and does something absolutely different from what I have told him."

• When touring Florence in 1952, George Balanchine's dance troupe was in theory supposed to use their energy for dancing, but George Balanchine did not object when many dancers spent much energy touring museums and looking at the works of art. Much earlier, Sergei Diaghilev had encouraged the young George Balanchine to often tour art museums and keep looking at works of art that at first were alien to him. One day, Mr. Balanchine experienced a revelation while looking at the works of art: "One day I saw them. I could really see them. I knew why he made me go back."[1]

• Stan and Jan Berenstain are the creators of the Berenstain Bears. As you would expect, they both liked to draw from an early age. When Jan was a little girl in elementary school, she broke her collarbone play-wrestling with another girl. The doctor put her arm in a sling and told her not to use that arm for a while. Because Jan liked drawing, when it came time for art class she tried to take her arm out of the sling so she could draw, but her teacher made put her arm back in the sling. Jan read a book while everyone else drew.

• Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright had a vision of creating a distinctly American architecture early in his career. Because Mr. Wright showed promise as a young architect, two men, architect David Burnham and a wealthy man named Ed Waller, offered to send him to Paris to study for four years at the Beaux-Arts - all expenses paid - provided he returned to the United States and designed houses in the European classical style. Mr. Wright turned down the offer.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

When introduced to England in the 18th century, one breed of dog quickly became the carriage-dog breed of choice. What breed of dog became synonymous with "carriage dog"?

       Dalmatians                                                      Source

A carriage dog or coach dog refers to a type of dog rather than a specific breed. Dogs of this type were usually bred and trained to trot alongside carriages to protect the occupants from banditry or other interference. They were usually owned and used by the wealthy or traders and merchants. The dogs were trained to attack the horses used by highwaymen, giving the owners' human security time to respond to the actual robbers.

When the Dalmatian breed was introduced to England in the 18th century, they quickly became the carriage-dog breed of choice. Because of this, "carriage dog" became synonymous with "Dalmatian". The British Carriage Dog Society exists to preserve "the working heritage of the Dalmatian as a coaching dog." Previously any breed with long legs and some weight in the body had been used.

Coach dogs were kennelled in the stables, and bonded with the horses as pups. They were trained to regard strange horses on the road as hostile, and it was up to the human security to ensure other riders were warned to stay clear of the coach on the road. A more civic usage was as fire-engine escorts, helping to clear the way in crowded streets as well as guarding the very expensive horses in their stables.        Source

   The Dalmatian.

Dave responded:
Dalmatian. A large dog with a high energy level and a sense of independence, the hard to train and often disobedient Dalmatian is an unsuitable pet for most families. They demand a lot of personal attention and exercise or find an outlet by destroying furniture. They also need early socialization with other dogs. If not properly socialized the aggressive Dalmatian will readily pick fights with other dogs. That aggressive nature is fitting with its old role as a carriage dog that ran alongside the horses and fought off stray dogs that tried to harass the team. In addition, after the Disney movies made that breed look so cute, breeders nearly ruined Dalmatians by inbreeding, causing all sorts of birth defects, with deafness being a common malady. Dalmatians are often surrendered to shelters when the owners realize what they got themselves into. If you want a large dog, the lovable Labrador Retriever is a far better choice.

Citizens Of Greece

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are officially citizens of Greece, according to the country's prime minister.

"@ritawilson @tomhanks are now proud Greek citizens!" Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote in an Instagram post Sunday, alongside a picture of him and his wife, Mareva Grabowski, standing with Hanks and Wilson. Hanks and Wilson are seen holding Greek passports.

Hanks joined the Greek Orthodox Church upon marrying Wilson, who has Greek ancestry, in 1988. The couple owns property on the island of Antiparos and have produced a handful of films about Greek communities, including "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," "Mamma Mia!" and both of the film's sequels.

Representatives for Wilson and Hanks did not immediately responds to NBC News' requests for comment, however, Hanks announced on social media in January that he was "starting 2020 as an Honorary citizen of all of Greece!" after Greece's President Prokopis Pavlopoulos signed an honorary naturalization order allowing him to claim Greek citizenship.

Baseball Card Breaks Printing Records

Dr Fauci

Dr Anthony Fauci's baseball card following him throwing the opening pitch at the Washington Nationals home opener has set an all-time high printing record.

The nation's top infectious disease expert was invited by the Washington Nationals to throw the first pitch last Thursday in honour of the return of the baseball season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Topps, a baseball card company, announced it would be releasing a limited-edition baseball card of the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to mark him throwing the opening pitch for the game against the New York Yankees.

The picture used by the company showed the expert throwing the pitch just as it left his hand. Dr Fauci's pitch ultimately missed the home plate by a fair margin.

Topps announced on Monday that Dr Fauci's baseball card set an "all-time high print run record" after 51,512 cards cards were ordered by fans.

Set Dates for 2021

Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced key voting dates for the 78th annual Golden Globes.

The ceremony, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021 - pushed back almost two months from its annual early January date due to uncertainties from the coronavirus pandemic.

It's not clear yet if the awards show will be held in person, or if actors will be able to campaign as they normally do by appearing at schmoozy press conferences with HFPA voters - a group of about 90 international journalists.

The release calendar for films in contention at the Golden Globes will be over a span of 14 months, from Jan. 1, 2020 through Feb. 28, 2021. The Oscars, currently pushed to April 25, 2021, will similarly include movies that open in January and February for the upcoming awards season.

Since most movies released so far this year weren't able to open in theaters, the Globes will allow streaming movies - provided they were intended for a theatrical release - to be eligible of consideration.

Record High

Gold

Gold stormed to a record high on Monday as investors sought refuge from the possible hit to a pandemic-stricken global economy from an escalation in the U.S.-China spat, which pummelled the dollar.

Spot gold hit a record high of $1,945.16 per ounce, and rose 2% to $1,938.27 by 12:29 p.m EDT (1629 GMT). U.S. gold futures gained 1.8% to $1,931.40.

Silver also rallied, jumping as much as 8% to $24.57, its highest since August 2013, and was up 6.8% at $24.29 per ounce.

"The dollar is losing its safe-haven appeal and you're going to continue to see gold surge as the dollar sinks," said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at broker OANDA.

Platinum rose 2.7% to $938.44 per ounce and palladium jumped 4% to $2,309.06.

'Good Guy With A Gun'

New Research

The "good guy with a gun" theory goes like this: If more well-intentioned people carry guns, there's a higher chance of stopping a violent shooter.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works in real life, according to new research published in the journal Justice Quarterly. The study found that laws allowing more people to carry guns in public are associated with a rise in gun violence. The results also showed that the higher a state's gun-ownership rate, the more likely a mass shooting is.

Emma Fridel, an assistant professor at Florida State University who authored the study, measured the affects of gun ownership rates and concealed-carry laws in all 50 states from 1991 to 2016. She controlled for other factors that might influence mass shooting and homicide rates, like unemployment rates, poverty levels and states' mental health expenditures.

Her findings show that looser concealed-carry laws had little impact on mass shootings and increased a state's gun homicide rate by 11%. Higher rates of firearm ownership overall, meanwhile, was associated with a 53.5% increase in the likelihood of a mass shooting.

Meanwhile, mass shootings and firearm deaths have increased, particularly in the last decade. The US saw 418 mass shootings and 15,395 deaths due to gun violence in 2019 (not counting suicides), compared to 269 mass shootings and 12,390 deaths in 2014.

Norwegian Arctic Archipelago

Svalbard

Norway's Arctic archipelago Svalbard on Saturday recorded its highest-ever temperature, the country's meteorological institute reported.

According to scientific study, global warming in the Arctic is happening twice as fast as for the rest of the planet.

For the second day in a row, the archipelago registered 21.2 degrees Celsius (70.2 Fahrenheit) in the afternoon, just under the 21.3 degrees recorded in 1979, meteorologist Kristen Gislefoss told AFP.

Later in the afternoon however, at around 6:00 pm local time, it recorded 21.7 degrees, setting a new all-time record.

The island group, dominated by Spitzbergen the only inhabited isle in the northern Norway archipelago, sits 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) from the North Pole.

True Cause

BO

Scientists may have identified the true culprit behind body odour (BO).

Working up a sweat triggers the release of a distinctly pungent aroma, with research previously suggesting a warm, moist armpit provides the perfect breeding ground for stink-producing bacteria.

This may not tell the whole story, however: a team from the University of York believes an enzyme may also be to blame.

While many turn to antiperspirants in an attempt to control their BO, the scientists hope their discovery will lead to more specialised treatments for severe sufferers.

"Solving the structure of this 'BO enzyme' has allowed us to pinpoint the molecular step inside certain bacteria that makes the odour molecules," said study author Dr Michelle Rudden.

Spotted At Red Lobster

Blue Lobster

The newest resident to call the Akron Zoo home is a blue lobster from Red Lobster.

The crustacean was saved from being the catch of the day at an Ohio Red Lobster restaurant when sharp-eyed workers noticed its rare blue color among the live lobster delivery.

The University of Maine Lobster Institute says the likelihood of catching a blue lobster is 1 in 200 million. The bluish color of the shell is the result of a genetic anomaly.

The restaurant reached out to the Akron Zoo on Friday to place a take-out order to donate the rare find.

Zoo spokeswoman Elena Bell said a conservation partnership called Seafood Watch run by the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California helped to coordinate the donation of the rare American lobster.

Welcome!

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican hypocrites?

Just plain vile, filthy rumors?

In other words, submissions are welcome.
