When my father died, so many years ago, my heart was broken. And then it got broken again. In the hours and days after his death, I was comforted by family and friends. But I couldn't help but notice who was missing, people I cared about, people I thought cared about me, who didn't call, didn't come, weren't there. Later, much later, I asked a few of those people why: Where had they been? Why didn't they come? And the answer was always the same.

Re: Black Lights
Did you know that you can use Murine eye drops to do body painting that shows up under black lights? In my wild college days we used to do this--you could go out of the dorm looking very prim and proper, and the moment you got to the party (and the black lights), you could have flowers and wild sayings show up all over your body. Hee hee hee!

Cutting Ties With Disney
Ebert & Roeper
Famed film critic Roger Ebert announced Monday that he is cutting ties with the nationally syndicated program he and the late critic Gene Siskel made famous, a day after Richard Roeper said he was quitting the show.
In an e-mail to The Associated Press, Ebert said Disney-ABC Domestic Television, which owns "At the Movies With Ebert and Roeper," has decided to take the program in a new direction.
Ebert is a copyright holder on the signature "thumbs up-thumbs down" judgment that he and Siskel made part of each film review. Last year, as he was negotiating a new contract with Disney-ABC Domestic Television, Ebert said he had "exercised his right to withhold use of the "thumbs" until he had a new contract.
"The trademark still belongs to me and Marlene Iglitzen, Gene's widow, and the `thumbs' will return," he wrote Monday. "We are discussing possibilities, and plan to continue the show's tradition."

Court Tosses FCC Fine
'Wardrobe Malfunction'
A federal appeals court on Monday threw out a $550,000 indecency fine against CBS Corp. for the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show that ended with Janet Jackson's breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction."
The three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Federal Communications Commission "acted arbitrarily and capriciously" in issuing the fine for the fleeting image of nudity.
The court found that the FCC deviated from its nearly 30-year practice of fining indecent broadcast programming only when it was so "pervasive as to amount to 'shock treatment' for the audience."
The 3rd Circuit judges - Chief Judge Anthony J. Scirica, Judge Marjorie O. Rendell and Judge Julio M. Fuentes - also ruled that the FCC deviated from its long-held approach of applying identical standards to words and images when reviewing complaints of indecency.

Leno's Last Night
May 29
Conan O'Brien will take over the "Tonight" Show next June - and what happens to deposed host Jay Leno after that is anybody's guess.
Leno's last show will be Friday, May 29, and O'Brien will start the following Monday, June 1, NBC executives told a Television Critics Association meeting Monday.
Jimmy Fallon is poised to take over O'Brien's "Late Night" in March or April of 2009, after honing his approach in brief Internet shows, Silverman and Graboff said.
O'Brien will wrap his "Late Night" run sometime in the first quarter of the year, with exact dates to be determined, the executives said. O'Brien reruns will fill the gap until Fallon takes over.

Extra Episodes
'Saturday Night Live'
The presidential election will mean extended duty for NBC's "Saturday Night Live."
The show's 34th season will kick off on September 13, allowing it to have seven live outings before Election Day on November 4. That, in turn, will result in a season order of 22 episodes, two more than usual.
In addition, NBC will schedule three half-hour episodes of "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday" at 9:30 p.m. on October 9, 16 and 23. Also, the night before the election, there will be a 90-minute "Saturday Night Live Presidential Bash 2008" to give the campaign a last-minute satirical spin.

World Santa Claus Congress
Copenhagen
It's July - and the Christmas tree is lit, bells are jingling and jolly elves are doing "yula-hoops" on stage.
What else could it be but the annual World Santa Claus Congress - filling a Danish amusement park with summer Christmas merriment for the 51st consecutive year.
Five months ahead of the holidays, nearly 140 St. Nicks kicked off their three-day convention Monday at the Bakken park north of Copenhagen. Most were from Scandinavia but some came from as far away as Russia, Japan and the United States.
Visitors lined up to watch the Santas, the Mrs. Clauses and all their little helpers parade through the park, bellowing "Ho-hos" and singing Christmas carols. Other activities included a bicycle parade, "yula-hoop" twirls and a brief swim in Copenhagen's famous harbor.

Class Act All The Way
Michael Weiner
Hate radio talk show host Michael Savage, who described 99 percent of children with autism as brats, said Monday he was trying to "boldly awaken" parents to his view that many people are being wrongly diagnosed.
Some parents of autistic children have called for Savage's firing after he described autism as a racket last week. "In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out," Savage said on his radio program last Wednesday.
Savage offered no apology in a message posted Monday on his Web site. He said greedy doctors and drug companies were creating a "national panic" by overdiagnosing autism, a mental disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate.
Savage, with more than 8 million listeners a week, is talk hate radio's third most popular personality behind draft-dodging drug addict Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, according to Talkers magazine. He's made a living off bold, outrageous statements: His brief MSGOP show was canceled after he told a caller he should "get AIDS and die, you pig."

Husband Sentenced
Amy Winehouse
The husband of British soul singer Amy Winehouse was ordered to serve about 4 1/2 more months in prison on Monday after he pleaded guilty to attacking a pub owner in 2006 and then trying to cover it up.
Blake Fielder-Civil, 26, sat with three co-defendants before judge David Radford at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London as the sentences were read out.
"I read that you, Blake Fielder-Civil, were affected by drink and cocaine and that in that drunken and drugged state took part in this attack out of a mistaken sense of loyalty to your friend Michael Brown," Radford said.
He added that Fielder-Civil, who married Winehouse in Miami in 2007, "behaved in a gratuitous, cowardly and disgraceful way," and sentenced the former video assistant to 27 months in prison, of which he will only have to serve half.

'Deal or No Deal'
Howie Mandel, the models, the banker and the briefcases all will be in place when the syndicated version of "Deal or No Deal" premieres in September - along with cash for viewers as well as contestants.
Players on the new show won't have a shot at the top $1 million payoff that's possible on NBC's series, but the half-hour show airing each weekday will offer a still-hefty $500,000, the show's producer told The Associated Press Monday.
The TV audience will have their own chance to win as well as watch with a $10,000 weekly prize up for grabs via a companion Web site or a call-in number, series producer Endemol USA said.
Mandel will continue to host the hourlong NBC show, which is entering its fourth season next month and has proven a hit. "Deal or No Deal" was NBC's most-watched entertainment program of the 2007-08 TV season, averaging more than 11 million viewers per broadcast.

Spa Treatment
Fish Pedicure
Ready for the latest in spa pampering? Prepare to dunk your tootsies in a tank of water and let tiny carp nibble away.
Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the D.C. area, where a northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, said 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far.
He said he wanted to come up with something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favor with state regulators because of concerns about whether they're sanitary.
Ho was skeptical at first about the fish, which are called garra rufa but typically known as doctor fish. They were first used in Turkey and have become popular in some Asian countries.
