• Garry Trudeau first started publishing a cartoon titled Bull Tales in the Yale Record, a magazine at Yale University. He then showed samples of the cartoon to Reed Hundt, editor of the Yale Daily News, the campus newspaper. Mr. Hundt looked over the sample cartoons, then said, "They're all right. We publish pretty much anything." Later, Bull Tales became better known as Doonesbury.
Censorship
• Marty Links drew the comic strip Emmy Lou for 34 years, but she ended it in 1979 because her syndicate would not allow her to have her characters discuss controversies such as the Vietnam War, which her own three children - who were teenagers like Emmy Lou - were discussing. In 1970, she wanted to introduce a black character, but her syndicate forbade her to because Southern newspapers would not run the strip.
• At the beginning of the 20th century, political cartoonists made fun of a governor of Pennsylvania by drawing his likeness in the form of a fat parrot, so the governor helped pass a law that made it illegal for artists to depict human beings as birds or animals. The cartoonists responded by drawing the governor's likeness in the form of a fat vegetable.
• A visitor to the studio of painter James McNeill Whistler saw a nude painting hanging on the wall and asked, "Isn't that indecent?" Mr. Whistler replied, "No, madam, but your question is."
Children
• As a child, American realist painter Andrew Wyeth was a little rascal. One day, while riding in the back seat of the family car, Andrew threw some firecrackers - which he had lit - under the front seat. He also once hid behind a curtain near the christening font in church. While the minister gave his sermon, Andrew made faces at the congregation. In addition, he once wanted to shoplift a candy bar, so he tried to make a little girl be his lookout. She didn't want to do it, so he put the candy bar in one of her pockets, then laughed as he ran away. Perhaps not surprisingly, young Andrew's hands were never still. When his father, the eminent illustrator N.C. Wyeth, tried to paint young Andrew's portrait in Andy with Fire Engine, he was forced to leave the hands unfinished.
• Bill Peet has written and illustrated many picture-books for children, such as Big Bad Bruce and Hubert's Hair-Raising Adventure, but for a while he wanted to create high-brow paintings. After working at Disney for years, he started a painting, but was disappointed with the results. The painting seemed to him to be "dull and uninspired," and soon he lost interest in it. However, Billy, his very young son, liked to paint, and while his father was away, Billy worked on the painting. At first, Mr. Peet's wife, Margaret, was worried that he would be angry, but in fact he was relieved that he didn't have to finish the painting. Soon afterward, he discovered his true calling and started to create the children's picture-books for which he became famous.
• As a child, Jerry Butler used a stick to draw in the red dirt in his yard in Magnolia, Mississippi. Often his drawings went unnoticed, but when he drew a picture of his relatives, his grandmother Artise (whom he called Grand Mo Lu) called for everyone to come and look at what he had created. Afterward, whenever someone would ask the kids in the family what they wanted to be when they grew up and young Jerry would answer that he wanted to be an FBI agent or something like that, Grand Mo Lu would tell him, "You're already an artist. That's enough to be." When he grew up, Mr. Butler did become a professional artist - and a writer, too - and he created such books as A Drawing in the Sand: A Story of African American Art.
This symbol, typically seen in graffiti, was known as "Mr Chad" or just "Chad" in the United Kingdom. Other names for the character include Smoe, Clem, Flywheel, Private Snoops, Overby, The Jeep, and Sapo. By what name is he more commonly known?

Last night I watched " U.S. vs John Lennon " on HULU. It was really about history and politics of the 70s. I had tears flowing as I realized nothing has changed.
This morning I watched a tribute to John Lewis, and his fight for civil rights. Tears flowed as I realized little had changed.
Next was the morning news with a man in Portland being beaten by five Federal agents with batons then tear gassed from six inches of his face, while standing in peace. Again tears flowed.
Since the first reports of those questionable, unmarked police units in Portland, I've been struggling with the best way to describe them. You answered that this morning when you posted this outstanding editorial cartoon! I am now using my limited world of FacePlace followers to make this word go viral!
Thank you, and bless you for all you do. Bartcop E is my first stop on the interwebs every day!

John Oliver has collected a stable of stars to help stamp out novel coronavirus conspiracy theories.
The Last Week Tonight host on Sunday addressed the rampant online misinformation about the pandemic, some dangerous because it is slickly packaged and therefore could seem more legitimate.
Rather than take a hostile position in confronting family and friends who may believe conspiracy theories about coronavirus, Oliver asked a number of
celebrities to do short videos that can be played in order to better get the actual news of the situation across.
One of those helping is the longtime Jeopardy! host, whose message is best played for grandparents, Oliver noted. "Yeah, we got Alex Trebek to make a 90-second video gently urging anyone who watches it to be careful with what they encounter and share online. So you can show your grandparents that and then talk to them about it," Oliver said.
John Cena was enlisted for the cousin who likes wrestling and Fast and Furious movies. The star noted both he and Oliver are the exact same age, which may be hard to believe, but he checked it out and made sure from an official source. He encouraged others to look to official sources for their information.
If NBC and Lorne Michaels have their way, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" this fall could move from being produced from cast members' homes to being made the old-fashioned way - "from New York."
Michaels and his team are making plans to bring the show back to NBC's Manhattan studios for the venerable late-night program's 46th season, according to two people familiar with the matter - the latest of TV's wee-hours programs to try and navigate a new normal in the midst of a pandemic that makes the process of putting on a TV show anything but.
NBC declined to comment on its plans for the next cycle of "SNL." To be certain, any concepts for the fall would hinge on how the nation is grappling with the coronavirus pandemic and the safety of the "SNL" cast and crew. NBC has yet to announce a premiere date for "Saturday Night Live."
There is reason for NBC to steer the show back into familiar terrain. "SNL" tends to thrive during the run-up to a presidential election, which will be in the offing this autumn. In 2016, impressions of Hillary Clinton by cast member Kate McKinnon and of Donald Trump by frequent guest Alec Baldwin proved winning. Ratings soared and viewers gravitated to seeing Melissa McCarthy's impression of former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. "SNL" antics have long been part of the national conversation, but the show's buzz was remarkable for a program that has been on the air more than four decades.
The Washington Nationals announced on Monday that Dr. Anthony Fauci will throw out the first pitch on Thursday when they open their season against the New York Yankees.
The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is the nation's leading voice in the COVID-19 pandemic and has weighed in regularly on the return of sports amid the pandemic.
He's also a big Nationals fan.
"Dr. Fauci has been a true champion for our country during the COVID-19 pandemic and throughout his distinguished career, so it is only fitting that we honor him as we kick off the 2020 season and defend our World Series Championship title," the Nationals' announcement reads.
His scheduled appearance on Thursday appears to be a tacit endorsement of the resumption of the MLB season.
A Nevada company that started in 1973 with a single hotel-casino in Reno announced Monday it has completed a $17.3 billion buyout of Caesars Entertainment Corp. and will take the iconic company's name going forward as the largest casino owner in the world.
Eldorado Resorts Inc. said the combined company will now own and operate more than 55 casino properties in 16 U.S. states, including eight resorts on the Las Vegas Strip.
In Las Vegas, the combined company now owns Caesars Palace, Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood, Harrah's Las Vegas, the Flamingo, Linq Hotel, Cromwell, Bally's, and the Rio off the Strip. It will be one of the largest employers in Nevada.
Eldorado founder Don Carano and his family developed a winemaking and casino empire that grew into 26 gambling properties and more than 18,000 employees in 12 states before the buyout. Carano died in 2017. Anthony Carano, a grandson, counted nine family members still involved in company affairs.
The merger also involves properties in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
A manipulated video of President Nixon's Apollo 11 address to the nation has been released online to highlight the dangers of media misinformation.
The deepfake video uses deep-learning and artificial-intelligence technology to create doctored footage that depicts Nixon falsely announcing that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became stranded on the moon during the 1969 landing.
"Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace," a voice actor impersonating president Nixon says in the doctored video.
The seven-minute documentary, produced by Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Centre for Advanced Virtuality, is titled "In Event of Moon Disaster" and brings to life the speech written by William Safire as a contingency in case the landing went awry.
An Israeli court convicted top model Bar Refaeli on Monday on four counts of tax offenses, capping a prolonged tax evasion case against her and her family that sullied the image of a once beloved national icon.
Refaeli entered the Tel Aviv courthouse with a white face mask to match her white blouse. She was accompanied by her father, Raffi, her mother, Zipi, and a phalanx of lawyers. The 35-year-old Refaeli and her mother confessed to offenses of evading paying taxes on income nearing $10 million.
According to a a plea bargain agreement they signed with authorities last month, Refaeli is to serve nine months of community service while her mother will be sent to prison for 16 months. The two are also ordered to pay a $1.5 million fine on top of millions of back taxes owed to the state.
The prolonged case, built around the celebrity model's worldwide income and the family's attempts to downplay her ties to Israel, damaged her well-crafted public image as an informal ambassador for the country.
Still, she remains a popular TV personality and pitch-woman whose image is ubiquitous on highway billboards throughout the country. Last year, she hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv.
Astrophysicists on Monday published the largest-ever 3D map of the Universe, the result of an analysis of more than four million galaxies and ultra-bright, energy-packed quasars.
The efforts of hundreds of scientists from around 30 institutions worldwide have yielded a "complete story of the expansion of the universe", said Will Percival of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
In the project launched more than two decades ago, the researchers made "the most accurate expansion history measurements over the widest-ever range of cosmic time", he said in a statement.
The map relies on the latest observations of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), titled the "extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey" (eBOSS), with data collected from an optical telescope in New Mexico over six years.
The infant Universe following the Big Bang is relatively well known through extensive theoretical models and observation of cosmic microwave background -- the electromagnetic radiation of the nascent cosmos.
Scientists around the world are currently working feverishly to develop an effective vaccine against COVID-19 to curb the global pandemic that has claimed nearly 600,000 human lives worldwide (and counting). Meanwhile, a collaboration between scientists at McMaster University, the University of Sydney, and historians at the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia, are looking to the past for potential clues. They have analyzed the genome of fragments of the smallpox virus used in vaccines during the Civil War, according to a new paper published in the journal Genome Biology.
"Understanding the history, the evolution, and the ways in which these viruses can function as vaccines is hugely important in contemporary times," said evolutionary geneticist Hendrik Poinar, director of the McMaster Ancient DNA Center, of the rationale behind the research. "This work points to the importance of looking at the diversity of these vaccine strains found out in the wild. We don't know how many could provide cross protection from a wide range of viruses, such as flus or coronaviruses."
The World Health Organization declared smallpox to be an eradicated disease in 1979, and many people don't remember just how devastating it could be. It began with a high fever and severe vomiting, followed by a skin rash. The victim would next develop sores, which eventually scabbed over and fell off, scarring the skin. About three in ten of those infected died, and the survivors were typically badly scarred for life, sometimes even blinded or permanently disabled.
The Chinese were inoculating people against smallpox as early as the 1500s. European physicians in the early 18th century relied upon variolation (the use of smallpox to induce immunity) to control the spread of smallpox, in which scrapings from smallpox pustules were scratched into a person's arm or inhaled through the nose. While those who received the treatment did go on to develop common smallpox symptoms like fever and rash, the death toll was significantly lower.
By the late 1700s, a handful of physicians in England and Germany noticed that people infected with the milder cowpox seemed to be immune to smallpox, and there were a couple of early vaccination tests in humans. For instance, in 1774, a farmer in Dorset, England, named Benjamin Jesty, successfully vaccinated his wife and children with cowpox. But it was the English physician Edward Jenner who is credited with bringing the smallpox vaccine into mainstream medical practice.
