• Back in 1956, when Yugoslavia was under the control of the dictator Josef Broz Tito, a Yugoslav consul-general confessed to theatrical guru Danny Newman that he never missed a performance at the Chicago Civic Opera by the baritone Tito Gobbi. Mr. Newman said that he understood that because Mr. Gobbi was a truly great baritone, but the consul-general replied, "Yes, but that's not the real reason I love him so much. You see, Mr. Newman, Yugoslavia is a communist country and not very popular here. So your Civic Opera House is the only place in this country where I can publicly yell my head off with "BRAVO, Tito! BRAVO, Tito!"
• Tom Morello, the Harvard-educated (in political science) musician in Rage Against the Machine, once worked a day job as the late California Democratic Senator Alan Cranston's scheduling secretary, a position in which he worked mostly at raising money. One day, a crying woman called the Senator's office to complain about Mexicans moving into her neighborhood. He called the woman a racist, and he told her to go to h*ll, remarks for which he got into trouble. Mr. Morello says, "That's when I realized, if in my job I can't tell a racist to go to h*ll, I'm not in the right job."
Practical Jokes
• In 2008, a practical joke called "rickrolling" arrived on the Internet. In rickrolling, Internet users are promised one thing, but given something else. For example, someone might search for "Keira Knightley upskirt photo" - I am not making this up - and when they click on the link hoping to see a Keira Knightley panty shot, they are instead linked to a videoclip of Rick Astley singing the song "Never Gonna Give You Up," a song the writer of this book likes a lot. Of course, people may wonder, Why Rick Astley? Aren't there worse singers and worse songs from the 1980s? Writer Alexis Petridis wonders why "Let's All Chant," by a couple of British radio personalities named Pat and Mick isn't used in this kind of practical joke. The song was so bad that the names "Pat and Mick" were used in cockney rhyming slang in which a word or phrase that rhymes is used instead of the regular word. Instead of saying, "That lager made me sick," slangsters said, "That lager made me Pat and Mick."
• Steve Pollak, an elementary schoolteacher, member of the Phish, and songwriter of "Suzy Greenberg," has perhaps the best-ever rock-and-roll nickname. In 1982, he was attending a boarding school, Taft, which inhabited a 220-acre tract in Watertown, Connecticut. One wild night, he donned orange goggles and a tapestry and started spouting the wisdom of the ages - or what a sophomore considered to be the wisdom of the ages - to a group of stoned friends, who promptly dubbed him the "Dude of Life," a nickname that stuck. The Dude was known for his antics on stage; for example, he threw rubber chickens from the stage to the fans. The rubber chickens bore handwritten messages from members of the band. One rubber chicken bore the message, "One day I'll have such an orgasm that my…(To be continued on next bird)."
• Jazz violinist Joe Venuti used to go out with his bassist, Irving Edelman, and eat Italian food with him after they had finished performing. He also played a practical joke on Mr. Edelman by putting a little bag of sand in his bass after each performance, so that the bass got heavier and heavier. Mr. Venuti didn't explain the joke until Mr. Edelman came to him and said that he was going to quit because all the Italian food he had been eating had caught up to him and it was getting too difficult for him to carry his bass.
Cambria is a name for Wales, being the Latinised form of the Welsh name for the country, Cymru. The term was not in use during the Roman period (when Wales had not come into existence as a distinct entity). It emerged later, in the medieval period, after the Anglo-Saxon settlement of much of Britain led to a territorial distinction between the new Anglo-Saxon kingdoms (which would become England) and the remaining Celtic British kingdoms (which would become Wales). Latin being the primary language of scholarship in Western Christendom, writers needed a term to refer to the Celtic British territory and coined Cambria based on the Welsh name for it.
The Welsh word Cymru (Wales), along with Cymry (Welsh people), was falsely supposed by 17th-century celticists to be connected to the Biblical Gomer, or to the Cimbri or the Cimmerians of Antiquity. In reality it is descended from the Brittonic word combrogi, meaning "fellow-countrymen". The term thus conveys something like "[land of] fellow-countrymen". The use of Cymry as a self-designation seems to have arisen in the post-Roman Era, to refer collectively to the Brythonic peoples of Britain, inhabiting what are now Wales, Cornwall, Northern England, and Southern Scotland. It came into use as a self-description probably before the 7th century and is attested in a praise poem to Cadwallon ap Cadfan (Moliant Cadwallon, by Afan Ferddig) c.?633. In Welsh literature, the word Cymry was used throughout the Middle Ages to describe the Welsh, though the older, more generic term Brythoniaid continued to be used to describe any of the Britonnic peoples (including the Welsh) and was the more common literary term until c. 1100. Thereafter Cymry prevailed as a reference to the Welsh. Until c. 1560 the word was spelt Kymry or Cymry, regardless of whether it referred to the people or the country. The Latinised form Cambria was coined in the Middle Ages, and was used regularly by Geoffrey of Monmouth.

My experience was that any time we were made to run the Agency "like a business" was a disaster. Instead of getting our work done, we wasted time writing contracts for one office to do work for another--it added layers of paperwork, made jobs for no-talent bureaucrats, and slowed everything down. Government is not a business, and every time some manager came up with the brilliant idea of trying to force us into working in that mode, work and morale suffered.
As soon as he got a promotion for screwing everything up, the manager would move on to cause havoc somewhere else, and we went back to doing things normally.
We called them "seagull" managers or "In Flight" types--read some idiotic article in an In Flight magazine, poop all over everything, and take off leaving everyone else to deal with all the poop.

CBS News host Margaret Brennan has claimed that the Trump administration has prevented Dr Anthony Fauci from appearing on her show for three months.
The moderator of CBS' Face the Nation, claimed on the show on Sunday that the administration had not approved an interview with Dr Fauci since 5 April.
Speaking at the start of Face the Nation on Sunday, Ms Brennan noted that coronavirus cases in the US had risen above 50,000 in the previous days, and said the show wanted to get Dr Fauci on to discuss the crisis.
Ms Brennan added that "we're committed to bringing you the facts about the virus and the most knowledgeable guests that we can. We think it's important for our viewers to hear from Dr Anthony Fauci and the Centres for Disease Control (CDC).
"But we have not been able to get our request for Dr Fauci approved by the Trump administration in the last three months."
The Walt Disney Company has signed a first-look deal with Colin Kaepernick and his production arm, Ra Vision Media.
The partnership will focus on telling scripted and unscripted stories that explore race, social injustice and the quest for equity, and per ESPN "provide a new platform to showcase the work of Black and Brown directors and producers." The deal encompasses multiple Disney platforms including ESPN, Hulu, Pixar and The Undefeated, the company's website focused on sports and culture.
The first project in development as part of this deal is an ESPN-produced docuseries chronicling Kaepernick's journey. Using extensive new interviews and a never-before-seen archive that documents his last five years, Kaepernick will tell his story from his perspective. Libby Geist, Kevin Merida and Connor Schell will executive produce for ESPN. Former ESPN staffer Jemele Hill will also be a producer.
Netflix is already giving Kaepernick's life the scripted treatment, with Ava DuVernay producing a series based on his high school years.
The six-episode limited series, which will focus on the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback's high school years, will be narrated and executive produced by Kaepernick. "Colin in Black & White" follows Kaepernick's early life as a Black child growing up with a white adopted family. It will chronicle Kaepernick's football journey during the same years he spent defining his identity, according to Netflix.
In February, Lin-Manuel Miranda broke the news that Disney had bought the rights to a filmed version of the Broadway mega-hit "Hamilton" and would release it in theaters in October 2021. Disney paid $75 million, likely the priciest purchase ever of an already-finished film, and Disney had high hopes it would be a box office success with Americans who had never been able to see the musical in person.
Then the pandemic hit. With movie theaters closed, Disney saw an opportunity to juice subscribers for its new Disney+ streaming service; it put "Hamilton" on the platform on July 3.
Sensor Tower, an app download research firm, tells Yahoo Finance that over the week of June 29 to July 5, Disney+ saw a 64% bump in downloads compared to the prior week.
Apptopia, an analytics firm, tells Variety that over the weekend of the "Hamilton" release, Disney+ saw a 72% spike in downloads compared to the weekend average of the prior four weekends.
President Donald Trump (R-Failure)'s former national security adviser John Bolton said the president paid more attention to cable news than the counsel of his advisers.
In an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday, the host Margaret Brennan asked Bolton if he believed the president was influenced more by what's on television or by his advisers.
"I think it's a combination of television and listening to people outside the government that he trusts for one reason or another," Bolton replied.
"I think that if you could clock the amount of time he spent actually in the Oval Office versus the amount of time he spends in the little dining room off the Oval Office with the cable news networks of one form or another on, it would be a very interesting statistic."
It has long been reported that the president spends significant amounts of time glued to cable news shows - particularly Fox News - sometimes live-tweeting their segments.

The controversial Dakota Access Pipeline will have to close down operations by August 5 following a Monday court ruling.
The US District Court for the District of Columbia found Dakota Access' plans for environmental protections to be inadequate, failing to fully meet requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act.
Judge James E. Boasberg ordered the company to shut the pipeline down and empty its oil by August 5.
The Trump administration backed the pipeline, with President Trump (R-Grifter) going so far as to sign an executive order to advance its construction amid legal challenges shortly after taking office in 2017.
The ruling comes as a major victory for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
Earth's magnetic field is created by the motion of molten iron in our planet's outer core but its detailed changes continue to elude scientists. We know the poles move, the field strength ebbs and flows, and Earth can even reverse its polarity, but many unknowns still surround these processes.
A new series of simulations, reported in a study published in Nature Communication, shows that Earth's magnetic field can shift up to 10 times faster than what it is currently believed. In particular, these rapid changes might take place when the field is at its weakest, like during a pole reversal or an excursion, where the pole position changes dramatically but only for a few thousand years, before going back.
The simulations cover the last 100,000 years and tried to reproduce geological findings related to ancient reversals or excursions. They found the changes in field direction occurred in speeds up to 10 times faster than the fastest currently reported variations of up to 1 degree a year. The models found the cause of these changes in the surface of the core, 2,800 kilometers (1,740 miles) below the surface.
"We have very incomplete knowledge of our magnetic field prior to 400 years ago. Since these rapid changes represent some of the more extreme behavior of the liquid core they could give important information about the behavior of Earth's deep interior," co-author Dr Chris Davies from the University of Leeds said in a statement.
Hundreds of drones lit up the night sky in Seoul for a spectacular showcase of motivational and awareness messages as the world battles the coronavirus pandemic.
Three hundred unmanned aerial vehicles were programmed to form images above the Han river -- which runs through the South Korean capital -- for the eyecatching flash mob.
The show began with messages reminding people of key precautionary measures, including wearing masks, washing hands and keeping a two-metre distance from others.
The drones created images of a mask surrounded by coronavirus particles, quickly shuffling to form two hands and water droplets against the dark night sky.
The 10-minute show shifted to messages of gratitude for medical personnel in the frontlines of the pandemic as well as all South Koreans for their collective efforts.
