• Jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie played a trumpet with the bell pointed upward. The story is that someone once accidentally sat on his horn, bending its bell. At first, Mr. Gillespie was angry, but then he discovered that he preferred the trumpet that way. Afterwards, he ordered all of his trumpets to be made with an upwards-pointing bell.
• World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma is a busy man - so busy that in October of 1999 he left his $2.5 million Montagnana cello in the trunk of a New York taxicab. Fortunately, he had a taxicab receipt, so police located the taxicab quickly. The cello was still in the trunk - the taxicab driver had not even realized that it was still there.
• While singing for the Metropolitan Opera during the 1950s, soprano Lucine Amara ran into a problem: New York can be a dirty city, and in the days before air conditioning dust settled everywhere in her apartment soon after dusting. She once cried, "I long for home! Even our dust is clean in San Francisco!"
• David Byrne, former front man for the Talking Heads, is a cyclist. In 2008, he crashed on West 14th Street in New York City. Two police officers arrived and asked him two questions: 1) Were you drinking? and 2) Are you David Byrne? Both questions have the same answer: yes.
• Even very good musicians can have an off night. A team of musicians led by jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis once mightily messed up "April in Paris." After they had "played" the song, Mr. Marsalis announced to the audience that they had just heard "April Embarrassed."
• While acting in the stage play Brouhaha, Peter Sellers danced a waltz right off the stage and into the orchestra pit, bruising himself badly. Comedian Spike Milligan sent him a telegram, asking, "Are you a member of the Musicians' Union?"
• Camille (Charles) Saint-Saëns once attempted to accompany a duet sung by two girls who were never together in their vocals. He stopped playing, then asked, "Now tell me, which of you two am I supposed to accompany?"
• Operas may have been more fun in the past than they are today. When George Frideric Handel's opera Serse was produced, it was enlivened by Caffarelli, the lead singer, who liked to goose the sopranos on stage.

• Welsh singer Tom Jones is known both for his voice and for women throwing their underwear at him. The first time a woman gave him her underwear while he was performing was in 1968 at the Copacabana in New York. He was sweating, and since people had been eating at the supper club, a couple of people gave him their napkins to wipe his brow with. Then, Mr. Jones remembers, "This one woman stood up - up with the dress, down with the drawers. Took 'em off and handed them to me." He wiped his brow with them and said, "Sweetheart, watch you don't catch cold." Mr. Jones married at age 16 and has stayed married. While he went to London to make it as a singer, his wife worked in a battery factory to support their young son. Mr. Jones vowed to make it big so that she didn't have to work and so that he could support his family. One of the great achievements of his life was making enough money that his father could retire from working in the Welsh coal mines at age 50. Tom Jones himself could have ended up in the coal mines, but he contracted tuberculosis at age 13 and the doctor told Tom's father, "Whatever you do, you can't put this boy in a coal mine because he has weak lungs." Mr. Jones says, "And the weird thing is, with weak lungs I've become a f**kin' singer."
Ailuromancy or aeluromancy, also known as felidomancy, is divination using cats' movements or jumps to predict future events, especially the weather.
Ailuromancy or aeluromancy (from Greek aílouros meaning "cat"), also known as felidomancy, is a form of theriomancy. It is divination using cats' movements or jumps to predict future events, especially the weather.
One of the most common methods of ailuromancy utilizes the movements and behaviours of a cat to predict upcoming weather patterns. For example, if the cat turns its tail to a fire or any substituting heat source, it foretells a possible change in weather, particularly the coming of heavy rain or hard frost. Another example is if a cat curls up with its forehead touching the ground, it indicates that storms will happen in the near future.

Where is the punishment to Putin? Or does he yet again believe what his master says over everyone else and his own intelligence agencies? WHY is he still squatting in our White House?

With the release of his 39th studio album, Rough and Rowdy Ways, Bob Dylan has made Billboard chart history. The album debuted at No. 2, with 53,000 equivalent album units in the United States, making it his highest-charting album since 2009's Together Through Life. It also makes Dylan the first artist to have a Top 40 album in each decade since the 1960s through the 2020s. Check out the full stats over at Billboard.
Rough and Rowdy Ways was preceded by the release of "Murder Most Foul," the 17-minute song that became Dylan's first No. 1 single on any Billboard chart. It was recently revealed that Fiona Apple and Blake Mills contributed to the album.
Colin Kaepernick's formative years are becoming a Netflix series.
The athlete and activist is teaming with Ava DuVernay for Colin in Black & White, a scripted limited drama that has been picked up straight to series at the streaming giant.
The six-episode series will examine Kaepernick's adolescent life, focusing on his high school years and the acts and experiences that led him to become the activist he is today. Kaepernick will appear as himself as the narrator of the series, which will cast an actor to play the younger version of the star quarterback.
Emmy nominee Michael Starrbury will pen the script and serve as exec producer alongside DuVernay and Kaepernick. Starrbury previously teamed with DuVernay on Netflix's Peabody-winning limited series When They See Us, based on the Central Park 5.
Per Netflix, the drama was conceived in 2019 and completed the scripts in May. The streamer describes the series as offering an introspective look at Kaepernick's early life as a Black child growing up with a white adopted family and his journey to become a great quarterback while defining his identity.
Few people have been as productive in quarantine as Josh Gad, who, when not contributing to Quibi's DIY Princess Bride, has boosted a number of charities with his Reunited Apart series, which has virtually reunited the casts of Lord Of The Rings, Splash, Back To The Future, Ghostbusters, and Goonies. For his final episode, Gad not only brought together the team behind John Hughes' Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but he assembled a star-studded tribute to the late writer and director that spans his entire oeuvre.
In the video's final stretch, Molly Ringwald, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Michael Keaton, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, and even Curly Sue's Alisan Porter dial in to deliver some of Hughes' best lines. Thankfully, what becomes before that is just as entertaining.
Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, and Jennifer Grey join Gad to gab about the film's creation and legacy, as do Lyman Ward and Cindy Pickett, who played Ferris' parents, and Ben Stein, he of the droning "Bueller."
Broderick and Ruck recall their old days doing Neil Simon plays together, and Sera remembers the pair's rank farts. After a few scene recreations, superfan Jake Gyllenhaal swings by for some trivia and legendary choreographer Kenny Ortega swings in to discuss his work on the parade scene.
Broadway theaters will remain closed through Jan. 3, 2021, industry group the Broadway League said on Monday, extending their coronavirus-related shutdown for another four months.
The New York City theaters, which went dark in mid-March, had previously set a tentative reopening date of Sept. 6, but social-distancing requirements for audiences, actors and production staff have made it impossible for plays and musicals to resume.
Thirty-one Broadway shows were in production when the shutdown began. Those that come back are expected to resume over a series of rolling dates in early 2021, the Broadway League said in a statement. The organization is developing safeguards to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus among audience members, actors and staff.
Producers of some shows, including the stage musical version of the Disney film "Frozen," have said they will not return at all.
The debut of "The Music Man," starring Hugh Jackman, was shifted to May 2021 from October 2020.
Brett Kavanaugh (R-Liar) lied about not being a source for the Watergate reporter Bob Woodward, but the Washington Post quashed the story while the supreme court justice's confirmation hearings were ongoing, according to the New York Times.
Media writer Ben Smith reported the story in a wide-ranging piece on the Post under the leadership of the executive editor, Marty Baron, published late on Sunday.
Kavanaugh hit the headlines again on Monday as he and three other conservatives voted in favor of a hardline Louisiana abortion law which the court nonetheless struck down by a narrow 5-4 majority as Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the four liberal judges.
Kavanaugh was Donald Trump's second nomination to the court, tipping it firmly to the right.
According to Smith, during Kavanaugh's tempestuous confirmation hearings in late 2018, the Post was set to run a story in which Woodward outed Kavanaugh as a source for material in one of his books about Ken Starr and his investigation of Bill Clinton.
The South Pole has warmed three times faster than the rest of the planet in the last 30 years due to warmer tropical ocean temperatures, new research showed Monday.
Antarctica's temperature varies widely according to season and region, and for years it had been thought that the South Pole had stayed cool even as the continent heated up.
Researchers in New Zealand, Britain and the United States analysed 60 years of weather station data and used computer modelling to show what was causing the accelerated warming.
They found that warmer ocean temperatures in the western Pacific had over the decades lowered atmospheric pressure over the Weddell Sea in the southern Atlantic.
This in turn had increased the flow of warm air directly over the South Pole -- warming it by more than 1.83C (about 3.3F) since 1989.
After spending over $30m to help elect Donald Trump (R-Failure) in 2016, the National Rifle Association faces a deepening financial crisis with over 200 staff layoffs and furloughs in 2020, according to three NRA sources, gun analysts and documents.
The situation is likely to hinder efforts by the gun rights group to help Trump and other Republicans win in November's election.
The 200-plus layoffs and furloughs, which have not previously been reported and were mainly at NRA headquarters in Virginia, were spurred by declines in revenues and fundraising, heavy legal spending, political infighting, and charges of insider self-dealing under scrutiny by attorneys general in New York and Washington DC, the sources say.
"The widespread Covid layoffs and furloughs have further harmed both the NRA's legal capacity and political influence beyond what was already a troubling deterioration," said one NRA official who requested anonymity to discuss internal matters. The official added the outlook this year for NRA political spending was "deeply concerning."
NRA staff learned about the furloughs, plus 20% staff pay cuts, four-day work weeks and other belt tightening, in an April email from Wayne LaPierre (R-Draft Dodger), the longtime top executive of the NRA, which claims it has 5 million members.
Deep in the cold, dark water, on the seafloor west of Greenland, a quiet ecosystem thrives. For the first time, a garden of soft corals and sponges has been found in these waters, sprawling across an area a little bigger than the City of San Jose.
The discovery highlights not only how little we understand the deeper regions of the ocean, but how much damage we could be doing while unaware. The newly discovered habitat sits right next to a deep-sea trawling area; scientists are calling for it to be classified as a vulnerable marine ecosystem.
Exploring the deep sea is challenging. The deeper you go, the less sunlight penetrates the waters, while the oceanic pressure steadily increases. By the time you're a few hundred metres down, it's cold, it's dark, and the pressure is crushing, at least for humans.
This means that deep-sea exploration requires special high-tech equipment designed to withstand pressure. But the new research shows such exploration can be conducted without a great deal of expense.
The team's rig - which they call a benthic video sled - consists of a GoPro, lights, and laser pointers (set a certain distance apart to act as a scale guide) in pressure cases, housed in a steel frame suspended from their research vessel. This low-cost sled can reach depths of 1,500 metres (4,920 feet).
