Andrew Tobias: An Iraqi's Perspective
We made so many mistakes in Iraq - invading in the first place, of course; not establishing order right away; protecting only the oil ministry from looters; disbanding the army . . . it was all so simpleminded, with such disastrous consequences, so many millions of wrecked lives and our own wrecked national balance sheet - and now Dick Cheney, who gave is this war, is chastisinging us for not exerting more military force around the world and relying too much on diplomacy and nuanced solutions? Really?

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
The most active open discussion is on Bart's Facebook page.

it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just

Three Journalists Receive Long Prison Terms
Al Jazeera
Three journalists who were arrested while working for Al Jazzera in Egypt were found guilty Monday of reporting false news and assisting the Muslim Brotherhood following the ousting of Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy, and Baher Mohamed were all given jail sentences of between 7 to 10 years, sparking outrage among fellow journalists and human rights observers.
Greste was an Australian correspondent for Al Jazeera; Fahmy and Mohamed worked at the station's Egyptian bureau. Ten other Al Jazeera journalists were tried and sentenced in absentia.
Arrested in December, Greste and Fahmy were sentenced to seven years in jail, and Mohamed was sentenced to 10 years, according to Al Jazeera, in a trial that many claim lacked any substantial evidence. As Al Jazeera reports, evidence against Greste, Fahmy, and Moahmed included "a BBC podcast, a news report made while none of the accused were in Egypt, a pop video by the Australian singer Gotye, and several recordings on non-Egyptian issues."
Calls immediately came for the verdict to be overturned and the journalists to be set free, with Amnesty International calling Monday a "dark day for media freedom."

Auctioned In Rhode Island
1942 Oscar
A rare auction of an Oscar statuette brought a total of $79,200, well more than expected, at its sale Monday by a Rhode Island auction house.
Nanci Thompson of Briarbrook Auctions said the total included a 20 per cent buyer's premium for the 1942 Oscar. She declined to disclose the name of the buyer, but said "you would recognize the name."
The auctioneer had estimated the golden statuette would sell for $5,000 to $30,000. But several hours before the live auction began, the online bidding had already reached $32,000.
The statue was awarded to Joseph C. Wright at the 15th Academy Awards for color art direction for his work on "My Gal Sal," starring Rita Hayworth and Victor Mature.

Clayton has "a long road to recovery," Abrahams said.
"It's a very serious situation," he said. "She's feisty, and she's with us. She's gonna make it."

'Water Lilies' Sells For $54 Million
Claude Monet
An iconic "Water Lilies" painting by French artist Claude Monet sold for £31.7 million ($54 million, 39.7 million euros) at a London sale on Monday, the second-highest sum paid for his work on record.
The 1906 painting "Nympheas" formed part of a seminal exhibition held at the Galerie Durand-Ruel, in Paris, in 1909 to unveil Monet's Water Lily works.
The instantly recognisable Impressionist masterpiece once belonged to the French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel and remained in his personal collection throughout his life.
"Le Bassin aux Nympheas" ("Pool of Water Lilies"), from the same series, still holds the record for a Monet painting sold at auction, fetching $80.3 million at Christie's in London in 2008.

Court Upholds $19M Verdict
Joe Francis
An appellate court has upheld a $19 million judgment against "Girls Gone Wild" founder Joe Francis in a slander case filed over his claims that casino mogul Steve Wynn threatened to kill him.
The California 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles upheld the verdict in a ruling issued Monday.
After a 2012 trial, a jury found that Francis' statements about threats were defamatory. Both men testified during the trial.
Francis appealed the verdict, arguing he first made the comments in a court proceeding over a gambling debt and should not be held liable for them.

Sacks Soprano
Opera Australia
Leading soprano Tamar Iveri on Monday had her contract torn up by Opera Australia for "unconscionable" anti-gay comments posted on her Facebook page that sparked a storm of protest.
The Georgian, daughter of acclaimed baritone Avtandil Javakishvili, referred to homosexuals as "fecal masses" in reacting to a gay pride march in Tblisi.
"I was quite proud of the fact how Georgian society spat at the parade ... please, stop vigorous attempts to bring West's 'fecal masses' in the mentality of the people by means of propaganda," said the post, which was later taken down.
The comments, made 18 months ago, sparked a backlash in Australia, culminating as Iveri was due to perform the role of Desdemona in Verdi's Otello from July 5 at the Sydney Opera House.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Iveri blamed her husband for the offensive comments made. She said he was "deeply religious" and has a "tough attitude towards gay people".

Excommunicates Uppity Woman
Mormon Church
Kate Kelly is a Mormon women's rights activist. She founded the group Ordain Women, arguing women deserve a larger role in the Mormon church, including ordination as priests. She has led peaceful protests for her cause and runs an online forum for Ordain Women, where she blogs about her faith.
Earlier this month, the Mormon Church sent Kelly a letter, accusing her of apostasy and taking issue with her online presence. They also had a similar issue with John Dehlin, who runs an online group for Mormons questioning their religion.
On Monday, Kelly learned that she has been excommunicated by the Church. The decision came from three Mormon officials men in Oakton, Virginia, who held a hearing on the matter on Sunday. Before the decision was made, Kelly sent the officials men a letter pleading her case and asking not to be excommunicated. She included photographs of her upbringing in the Mormon church and an explanation of her devotion to Mormonism, as well as more than 1,000 other letters from supporters.
However, her letter stated that was refusing to stop her activism, and this is what ultimately got her removed from the Church. "I will not stop speaking out publicly on the issue of gender inequality in the church," she wrote in the letter, "I cannot repent of telling the truth, speaking what is in my heart and asking questions that burn in my soul."
According to the Bishops men who ruled against her, she can be considered for re-baptism at some point in the future, but that would require her to give up her personal teachings and she "must stop trying to gain a following for yourself or your cause and taking actions that could lead others away from the Church." It seems unlikely that she would comply with that request now.

Catholic Church Loses Bid
'Allah'
Malaysia's highest court on Monday dismissed a bid by the Catholic Church for the right to use the word "Allah", ending a years-long legal battle that has heightened religious tensions in the Muslim-majority country.
The legal wranglings were seen as a test case for Malaysia's wider Christian community, but the government later clarified that the verdict was confined to the Catholic newspaper at the centre of the controversy. Worshippers can still use "Allah" to refer to God in church, the government added.
The divisive case, in which the Catholic Church challenged a government ban on its long-time use of the Arabic word, comes as minorities raise concerns that their rights are under threat from increasing Islamisation in Malaysia.
The government had previously banned the use of "Allah" in the local Malay-language edition of the Church's Herald newspaper. The use of the word had angered Muslims, who say Christians are overstepping religious boundaries.

Russia Finds 'Well-Preserved' Dinosaur Skeletons
Psittacosaurus sibiricus
Russian paleontologists have dug up well-preserved skeletons of two dinosaurs that roamed the Earth 100 million to 120 million years ago, a museum involved with the dig said Monday.
The team found two dinosaur skeletons at a depth of some 2.5 metres (eight feet) below the surface after spending three weeks at a well-known excavation site near the village of Shestakovo in the Siberian region of Kemerovo.
"The skeletons are intact and in great condition," Olga Feofanova, director of a local museum involved with the excavation works, told AFP.
She identified the species as Psittacosaurus sibiricus, noting that each skeleton was around two metres long.

Steve Rossi
Steve Rossi, one half of the prolific comedy duo Allen & Rossi, which became a favorite of "The Ed Sullivan Show" and other TV variety shows, died Sunday at age 82.
His friend of 40 years, Michael Flores told The Associated Press on Sunday that he visited the pal who introduced him to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in hospice care in Las Vegas on Friday, and he was weak from cancer of the esophagus that had spread but wasn't in any pain.
"I met every major entertainer in the country through Stevie, and I'm going to miss him," said Flores, who was manager of the Silver Nugget casino when Rossi was producing burlesque shows at another property, meeting through a hotel owner.
The duo appeared regularly on "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" and "The Merv Griffin Show." They also toured comedy clubs nationwide and headlined shows at major Las Vegas casinos in the 1960s until they split up in 1968, the newspaper reported.
They also famously appeared on Ed Sullivan's show multiple times with The Beatles.
Rossi was a casino entertainment director living in a hotel suite, but didn't know anyone. He asked to come over and watch TV one day and ended up staying about 3 ½ years, Flores said, laughing.
Rossi graduated from Loyola Marymount University, had a great sense of humor, was very creative and wrote music, including his hit "More."
Flores added that Rossi was religious and thought the comedian had made peace with his illness.
Rossi is survived by his wife, Karma, two children and two grandchildren.
