Polo is a horseback mounted team sport. It is one of the world's oldest known team sports.
The concept of the game and its variants date back from the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD. The sport originated from equestrian games played by nomadic Iranian and Turkic peoples. Polo was at first a training game for cavalry units, usually the Persian king's guard or other elite troops. It is now popular around the world, with well over 100 member countries in the Federation of International Polo. It is played professionally in 16 countries. It was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1936.
The game is played by two opposing teams with the objective of scoring goals by using a long-handled wooden mallet to hit a small hard ball through the opposing team's goal. Each team has four mounted riders, and the game usually lasts one to two hours, divided into periods called chukkas (or "chukkers").

Legend has it
That the sport was originally played with the head of an enemy instead
of a ball. A good player will exhaust several ponies during a polo match.

Polo. An elitist sport of royalty and the idle rich. For polo you have to buy a trained polo pony and board it, then have the leisure time and money to travel to the matches.
Photos: Hollywood actor Spencer Tracy was an enthusiast of polo, as was his long suffering wife Louise | Prince Charles played for many years and his sons are, or were, active in polo | Winston Churchill became addicted to polo while in the Army, but because he wasn't really a rich man, his civilian polo addiction strained the family's always shaky finances | The Duke of Edenborough was instrumental in bringing polo back to England after his 1947 marriage to Princess Elizabeth, and played for 20 years, reluctantly retiring at age 50 because arthritis hampered his play.
Deborah, the Master Gardener, replied:
I don't even have to look it up - the sport is polo. Riding a polo pony (actually a small horse, not necessarily technically a pony) takes a lot of skill and quick reactions. I prefer to wear a large straw hat, a fashionably-styled dotted swiss sundress, and a pair of espadrilles and watch from the stands.

The Academy Awards were due to take place on 28 February next year but have now been put back until 25 April.
Organisers have also agreed to extend the eligibility window beyond 31 December 2020 to the end of February.
Next year's British Academy Film Awards (Baftas) have been pushed back to 11 April, keeping in line with the Oscars.
The Oscars has only been delayed three times before - due to LA flooding in 1938; after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr in 1968; and following the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
It's not yet known if the ceremony will be virtual or in person as it is too early to say.
On Sunday, John Oliver continued to report from his white void for the latest episode of Last Week Tonight which kicked off with addressing the strides and progress that have been made from the last few weeks of Black Lives Matter protests in response from the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others.
Oliver went down the list of what the current movement has achieved such as the cancelation of Cops and how Sesame Street and CNN teamed for a town hall about racism for children - a town hall that was not liked by Fox News's Tucker Carlson, who Oliver called a "one-man homeowners association."
On top of that, we have seen the toppling of confederate statues including a statue of Robert E. Lee in Virginia, which Senator Amanda Chase claims is an act of "erasing the history of white people."
Oliver responds to her saying that she has missed the point adding "You cannot erase the history of white people…it's like the skid mark on the ass of your favorite shorts. No matter how hard you try, that sh*t's never coming out."
There's nothing natural about ghosts, but Ghostbusters appearing on Reunited Apart just feels right.
Reunited Apart is the YouTube show put together by actor Josh Gad in which he reunites the casts of classic films, over Zoom, for charity. It started with The Goonies, and went on to Back to the Future, Splash, and Lord of the Rings. Today, Gad reunited the cast of Ghostbusters, which fits right in with the nerdy nostalgia films he's already covered. Half the fun of these is not knowing what's gonna happen, or who's gonna show up, so we won't spoil it here. Suffice to say, it's worth a watch, otherwise, we wouldn't have written about it.
That was wonderful. Especially Bill Murray wearing the Stay Puft hat, Sigourney Weaver's stories, the Harold Ramis discussion, and the deeper cut cameos at the end. It's also encouraging to hear Jason Reitman say the delay of Ghostbusters: Afterlife due to covid-19 is helping him reevaluate the movie.
But, of course, with Gad soon to appear in Shrunk with an actor by the name of Rick Moranis, it's a little sad that Moranis only gets mentioned and doesn't pop up here. He probably doesn't want to get the "Why aren't you in the new Ghostbusters?" questions but it would have just been great to see him.
Monty Python co-founder John Cleese has taken note of Fox News' Python cluelessness, tweeting, "BREAKING: No one @FoxNews has ever seen @montypython & The Holy Grail. #runit #goodjournalism #factchecking."
On Friday, Fox's Martha MacCallum reported on the network's show The Story that there was evidence of problems between the leaders of the Seattle protest camp. The CHAZ is a six-block area in Seattle where Black Lives Matter protesters have taken over.
MacCallum's report showed an image of a Reddit post that was headlined, "I didn't vote for Raz." Fox apparently thought it was a reference to Raz Simone, a rapper who has been identified as an unofficial leader of the CHAZ.
Accompanying the image was the suggestion that "infighting among some of the occupiers and some signs of rebellion against Raz Simone."
Unfortunately, the post was not a reference to the CHAZ, but was a quote from the 1975 comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Ron Perlman wants to beat up Ted Cruz for a good cause. The "Hellboy" actor has challenged the Texas senator to a fight and has offered to donate $50,000 in support of Black Lives Matter should Cruz agree to the match. The fisticuffs challenge is the result of a Twitter feud that broke out over the weekend between Perlman and politician Matt Gaetz, an ardent Trump supporter who is the U.S. representative for Florida's first congressional district.
Gaetz criticized U.S. soccer teams for repealing a policy which requires athletes to stand during the national anthem, prompting Perlman to tweet, "The U.S. Soccer team called and you guessed it…[they] said they couldn't give any less of a fuck about what you two dipshits think." The actor was referring to Trump and Gaetz. The latter replied by calling Perlman a "racial justice warrior who had no problem in Hollywood portraying the White Supremacist leader of a motorcycle gang," referring to the actor's run on "Sons of Anarchy."
Ted Cruz weighed in after Perlman told Gaetz that he is the second "ugliest politician walking" after Ohio representative Jim Jordan. The senator wrote to Perlman: "Listen, Hellboy. You talk good game when you've got Hollywood makeup & stuntmen. But I'll bet $10k - to the nonpolitical charity of your choice - that you couldn't last five minutes in the wrestling ring w with Jim Jordan without getting pinned. You up for it? Or does your publicist say too risky?"
"Wait, is this [the] Ted Cruz?" Perlman responded. "Holy shit man! Is this the same guy let little Donnie call his wife a dog and his father an assassin and now kisses his ass? Yo, can I get your autograph man?"
"I tell you what Teddy boy, since mentioning Jim Jordan and wrestling is problematic, why don't we say fuck him and just make it you and me," Perlman added. "I'll give 50k to Black Lives Matter and you can keep all the tax payer money you were thinking of spending."
Ruling against environmentalists, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday decided that the federal government has the authority to allow a proposed $7.5 billion natural gas pipeline to cross under the popular Appalachian Trail in rural Virginia.
The 7-2 ruling was a victory for Dominion Energy Inc and President Donald Trump (R-Grifter)'s administration, both of which appealed a lower court ruling that halted construction of the 600-mile (965-km) Atlantic Coast Pipeline, which would run from West Virginia to North Carolina.
The decision, written by conservative Justice Clarence "Slappy" Thomas, removes one of several obstacles facing the project. Two liberal justices, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, dissented.
Environmental groups including the Sierra Club and Southern Environmental Law Center had sued to stop the pipeline after the U.S. Forest Service gave the green light for the project to run through the George Washington National Forest. Dominion Energy leads a consortium of companies in the project that also includes Duke Energy Corp.
After a protracted application process involving multiple federal agencies, the Forest Service granted the consortium a right of way under the trail in 2018.
The orchards planted in the 1920s around the old town of Manzanar have faced drought, flooding, wildfires, pests, marauding elk and trespassers armed with chain saws.
Still, they survived, reminders of what happened here, site of the nation's most famous internment camp.
"Each tree here has a story to tell," said Dave Goto, whose great-uncle was held at Manzanar and served as its doctor. "It's an honor to preserve them, and really tough to lose one."
For Goto, preserving the pear trees is part of a larger mission - of not letting the country forget how Americans of Japanese descent were deprived of their civil liberties and shipped off to camps during World War II.
On a recent crisp weekday morning, Goto climbed a 15-foot ladder and glumly eyed evidence of a contagious disease known as fire blight: oozing cankers and blackened leaves.
Hummingbirds can perceive colours that the human eye cannot, thanks to the addition of an extra cone in the hummingbird's eye that we don't possess, new research reveals.
The findings, demonstrated in experiments with wild broad-tailed hummingbirds (Selasphorus platycercus) in Colorado, suggest that the ability to discriminate non-spectral colours (including ultraviolet wavelengths) could play a vital role in behaviours including mating, feeding, and evading predators.
Unlike humans, who have three kinds of colour-sensitive cone cells in our eyes, birds have four types of cone cells that help them to process the differences between different kinds of colours. With three cones, human eyes can perceive what's known as trichromatic colour, made up from a neural blend of red, green, and blue light.
Thanks to that process, our brains can perceive the non-spectral colour purple (because it's a combination of blue and red). But animals with an extra cone can see an even greater spectrum of colours by being sensitive to more kinds of light wavelengths - opening the door to other kinds of colour combinations that we can't see or even... imagine.
It's thought that birds, with their extra cone cell, may be able to perceive as many as five non-spectral colours, including purple, ultraviolet+red, ultraviolet+green, ultraviolet+yellow, and ultraviolet+purple.
