Anecdotes

Children

• Rock goddesses have kids, too. Pat Benatar was a major 1980s rock star and continues to play today. Her songs such as "Heartbreaker" are on Guitar Hero, and lots of children - and adults - rock out to them, including her two daughters, Haley and Hana. Of course, kids can ask embarrassing questions, and Haley and Hana sometimes ask their mom this question about the Spandex pants she used to wear on stage: "How did you get into those pants?"

• Jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams was blessed with perfect pitch - she could identify any note and any key after hearing it. In the third grade, she heard her teacher hum a song, and she said that she could identify the key. Her teacher was skeptical and tested her by playing a note on a piano. Mary Lou immediately identified it.

• When Stevie Wonder was young, he sang in a church choir - until he was expelled because a church member heard him singing rock and roll.

Clothing

• Luisa Tetrazzini (1871-1940), a coloratura, was singing Lucia di Lammermoor in Puebla, Mexico, on a stage flooded because of a rainstorm and a leaky roof. To keep from ruining her dress, she held it a few inches above the water. This displeased a woman in a box, who commented on the shocking display of a lady's ankles. Ms. Tetrazzini walked underneath the woman's box, then improvised her own words to the music of the opera: "Madam, you are shocked, very shocked, I know it, yes I do. But do you know the stage is soaking wet and our dresses all are spoiling, yet just to please you I am ready, perfectly ready, to let my dress drag through the wet and be completely ruined if you, dear Madam, will promise to buy me a lovely new one." This gave the audience a laugh and kept the critic quiet for the rest of the performance.

• Pianist Richard Goode was far from dressing with splendor, although at times he tried. He once ran the hot water in his bath in an attempt to steam wrinkles out of his tailcoat. Unfortunately, he forgot to stop the bathtub, and an hour later the ceiling of the apartment underneath his had collapsed. On another occasion, he put his newly washed white bow tie in a toaster oven so he could dry it. Unfortunately, he singed the bow tie, so he tried to cover up the singed places with talcum powder.

• Musician David Broekman used to know someone with the unconscious, but annoying, habit of picking lint off the suit of the person he was talking to, so Mr. Broekman used a small paint brush to paint a dot of white on his suit. Sure enough, the man with the annoying habit tried to pick off the piece of "lint" from Mr. Broekman's suit.

Concerts

• Jazz pianist Oscar Peterson was discovered in a very Hollywood-movie fashion. In his native Montreal, Canada, Mr. Peterson was playing in a small club. Producer Norman Grantz heard him, liked what he heard, and invited him to play at Carnegie Hall with the band Jazz at the Philharmonic on September 19, 1949. Mr. Peterson did exactly that. By the way, unlike Mr. Peterson, not every musician is competent. Gioacchino Rossini was once forced to work with a very poor contralto whose competence was limited to singing B-flat notes. Therefore, Rossini composed an aria that required her to sing only B-flat notes; the orchestra carried the melody. The aria was successful - the contralto received a standing ovation.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

June has three birthstones: Alexandrite, Moonstone, and _____?_____

       Pearl                                                      Source

June's birthstones are pearl, alexandrite and moonstone.        Source

A pearl is a hard, glistening object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk or another animal, such as fossil conulariids. Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate (mainly aragonite or a mixture of aragonite and calcite) in minute crystalline form, which has deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes, known as baroque pearls, can occur. The finest quality of natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries. Because of this, pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.

The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but are extremely rare. These wild pearls are referred to as natural pearls. Cultured or farmed pearls from pearl oysters and freshwater mussels make up the majority of those currently sold. Imitation pearls are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry, but the quality of their iridescence is usually very poor and is easily distinguished from that of genuine pearls. Pearls have been harvested and cultivated primarily for use in jewelry, but in the past were also used to adorn clothing. They have also been crushed and used in cosmetics, medicines and paint formulations.        Source

Dave responded:
Pearls. June has always been my favorite month. The month when summer begins, the month with the longest days, the month when the school year ends, the month my family took our first vacation at the lake, the month I got married, the month I started the job I would work for 38 years, the month our 4th grandchild was born. In 2020 June begins on a Tuesday, and no other month will begin on a Tuesday during this year. Maybe we'll go golfing today to celebrate, unless Judy thinks it is too cold out. Only a high of 70 in Michigan.

Deborah, the Master Gardener, replied:
Pearl is the 3rd gemstone of June. Not that I knew off-hand.
Our city is having a peaceful protest later this morning at the Police Station/City Hall. We're going. It's like the turbulent, violent protests of the 60s (Watts comes to mind, and there are others) with better tech. It's time we all became better anti-racists.

BRUCE'S RECOMMENDATION

BANDCAMP MUSIC

BRUCE'S RECOMMENDATION OF BANDCAMP MUSIC

Music: "Movin" from the album CRUISIN' FOR SURF BUNNIES

Artist: Lee Hazlewood

Artist Location: Stockholm, Sweden

Info: Lee Hazlewood (1929-2007) is a country and pop singer who performed with Nancy Sinatra in the 1960s and 1970s. But he did spend a decade living in Sweden, where one of his projects was writing music to fill an album of surf instrumentals.

"In Hazlewood's tape archives a tape marked 'Woodchucks' was discovered, the pseudonym for his 'fake' instrumental group (which was actually the legendary studio band known as the Wrecking Crew). […] The Wrecking Crew recordings - presented here by Light in the Attic as 'Cruisin' for Surf Bunnies by Lee Hazlewood's Woodchucks' - were conceived by Hazlewood as demos, but the sound quality and performances are impressive and stand up well among similar recordings from the era." - Chris Ingalls, PopMatters

Price: $1 (USD) for track; $9.99 (USD) for 12-track album

Genre: Surf

Current Events

He actually walked to a photo op!

Predator just walked from the WH to St. John's Church across the street so he could glare and pose with a Bible. And then immediately stalked back to safety of his hidey hole. Of course, all the protesters were cleared far, far away from his path. What an ass.

Dominate?

Predator advised the governors to dominate or be laughingstocks. That must be what he thinks he did when he begged Stormy Daniels to spank him with the magazine with his picture on the cover. Dominate. Not whipped. How bold of the Coward-in-Chief.

So Predator, who left the state governors to deal with the pandemic on their own or actively interfered with their efforts, is now telling them they look "weak" unless they go after protesters aggressively? Did the Coward-In-Chief make that brave phone call while still hiding out in his bunker? How many changes of underwear will he need tonight as protester gather outside the WH again? Big Man, my rat's hairy rear end! Big Baby. Incompetent buffoon. Disgrace.

The incompetent, unfit Coward-In-Chief continues to dither & hide:

Enters 14-Day Isolation

James Cameron

As threatened last week (sorry, teased last week), it looks like production on the Avatar sequels is really about to get back up and running. This isn't just idle talk anymore, though, because Variety is reporting that director James Cameron recently entered a 14-day government-supervised quarantine after flying from Los Angeles to New Zealand so he can get back to work on his next movie about humans who put their brains into blue cat people and then fight to protect the environment from bad humans. That's a fairly sizable time commitment, not just for Cameron, but for producer Jon Landau and the 50 or so crew members that he brought to New Zealand. They were all willing to stay isolated in a new country for two weeks just so they can do a job, so it actually seems pretty likely now that they're going to, you know, do the job.

That means Avatar 2 will be one of the first big blockbuster movies to resume production after everything was shut down because of the pandemic, and as we noted last week, that's weird. There were no Avatar movies for so long, and now Avatar movies are the only things happening. Wild stuff. It's also worth noting that New Zealand is still technically closed to foreigners, but Cameron and the Avatar crew are getting an exemption because their work has "significant economic value" to the country-which is probably true, since Cameron and his pals are working on multiple Avatar movies at once and are set up at multiple New Zealand movie studios (which must be very expensive).

Now that we're reasonably sure Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 are going to happen, we all have to ask ourselves whether we really care. The first movie was the rare thing that everybody saw but nobody would admit to actually caring about, but maybe Avatar 2 will capture the post-pandemic zeitgeist much like how the first one captured the 3D zeitgeist. We'll know next year when Avatar 2 finally comes out.

Asked Public For Videos

Dallas Police

With protests against police brutality and racism happening in many major US cities, the Dallas Police Department on Sunday asked the public to submit videos of "illegal activity from the protests" through the city's smartphone app. It didn't go well, as the app was reportedly inundated with unrelated content, such as K-pop videos, and within less than a day, the app had stopped working due to "technical difficulties."

"In response to the tweeted request from Dallas Police, hundreds of K-pop fans replied with photos and videos of their favorite artists," BuzzFeed News wrote. "Many people also claimed to have submitted videos of the police harming protesters, as well as fan edits of K-pop artists, to the iWatch Dallas app."

The department made its request for video of protesters at 12:48am CT Sunday. "If you have video of illegal activity from the protests and are trying to share it with @DallasPD, you can download it to our iWatch Dallas app. You can remain anonymous," the tweet said.

By Sunday evening, the department's Twitter account said, "Due to technical difficulties iWatch Dallas app will be down temporarily." We contacted the police department about the status of the app today and will update this article if we get a response. I was unable to make a submission in the iPhone app today, but that may be because I'm not in the Dallas area-the app asks for your phone's location services to be enabled and told me that my "device is blocked" due to a "validation error."

Protocols For Safe Return

Industry White Paper

A 22-page industry white paper developed by the Industry-Wide Labor-Management Safety Committee Task Force establishing protocols for a safe return to work "in an environment that minimizes the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19? was submitted to the governors of Los Angeles and New York on Monday and will be shared with other governors and government officials.

The guidelines are based on discussions with health experts, guidelines issued by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and input from industry participants familiar with the working conditions of motion picture and television production.

Its recommendations "set forth the consensus of the Task Force and outline guidance regarding protective measures to be used, including regular screening, diagnostic testing, use of personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfecting work sites, and appropriate response should an employee contract COVID-19 or be exposed to it."

The Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers said the report "is the result of an industrywide collaborative effort made up of production companies, unions and guilds to provide governments with a set of guidelines and principles to safely resume production."

Photo Op Outrage

St. John's

The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington sharply criticized President Donald Trumpn (R-Philistine) on Monday for staging a visit to the historic St. John's Church across from the White House, where he held up a Bible after authorities had cleared the area of peaceful protesters.

The Rev. Mariann Budde, whose diocese St. John's belongs to, said in a statement that she was "outraged" by Trump's visit and noted that he didn't pray while stopping by the church, a landmark known for its regular visits from sitting presidents since the early 19th century.

"He took the symbols sacred to our tradition and stood in front of a house of prayer in full expectation that would be a celebratory moment," Budde said in an interview after her statement on Trump's visit was posted to the diocese's Twitter account.

Budde said the church was "just completely caught off-guard" by the visit, with "no sense that this was a sacred space to be used for sacred purposes." In order to facilitate Trump's statement there, she said, she believed tear gas was used in the area between the White House and the church.

A Look

Antifa

President Donald Trump (R-Manbaby) has blamed antifa activists for violence at protests over police killings of black people, but antifa isn't an organization and targeting it isn't simple.

Short for "anti-fascists," antifa is not a single organization but rather an umbrella term for far-left-leaning militant groups that confront or resist neo-Nazis and white supremacists at demonstrations.

There is no hierarchical structure to antifa or universal set of tactics that makes its presence immediately recognizable, though members tend to espouse revolutionary and anti-authoritarian views, said Mark Bray, a historian at Rutgers University and author of "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook."

Literature from the antifa movement encourages followers to monitor the activities of white supremacist groups, publicize the personal information of perceived enemies, develop self-defense training regimens and compel outside organizations to cancel any speakers or events with "a fascist bent," according to a 2018 Congressional Research Service report.

Trump and members of his administration have singled out antifa as being responsible for the violence at protests triggered by the killing of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after Floyd stopped moving and pleading for air.

Unearth Ancient Identity

Saudis

Tarek never knew his daily commute was in the footsteps of ancient Arab kings.

The 30-year-old Al Ula resident runs his hands over the exposed brick and rock inscriptions he has known since a child as "the ruins," listening as a tour guide lists the achievements of the tribes that built a kingdom on these sands 3,000 years ago.

Squinting at the rock-carved tombs in front of him, he sees something greater than a civilization: a connection.

Today Saudi authorities and archaeologists are unearthing and promoting Dadan and Lihyan, two Arab kingdoms whose traces have lain under sand and obscurity for centuries. Cited in the Old Testament and ancient Greek texts, the ancient kingdoms once ruled vital trade routes.

Saudi citizens are pointing to the kingdoms as proof not only that this arid region was home to civilizations centuries before the modern oil boom, but that the people of Saudi Arabia are the latest in a proud lineage stretching back millennia - that there is more to being a Saudi than oil and religion.

Traces In Ancient Temple

Cannabis

Israeli archaeologists say they've found cannabis residue on artifacts from an ancient temple in southern Israel - providing the first evidence of the use of hallucinogenics in the ancient Jewish religion.

In a research paper, the authors say the discovery from an 8th-century B.C. shrine at Tel Arad offers the first proof for "the use of mind-altering substances as part of cultic rituals in Judah," including the first Jewish Temple that stood in Jerusalem at the same time.

Archaeological excavations at Tel Arad, located around 35 miles (60 kilometers) south of Jerusalem, in the 1960s discovered a stronghold belonging to the ancient kingdom of Judah, and at its core a small shrine bearing striking similarities to the biblical Temple in Jerusalem.

But for decades, attempts to determine the composition of black deposits found on two limestone altars from the shrine's inner sanctum - now located at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem - were inconclusive.

Chemical analysis of the samples conducted at Israel's Hebrew University and Technion Institute found that one altar contained the psychoactive compounds found in marijuana, and the other had traces of frankincense - one of the ingredients mentioned in the Bible for the incense sacrifice in the ancient Jewish Temples, the authors wrote.

How Plants Became Meat Eaters

Carnivorous Plants

About 70 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, a genetic anomaly allowed some plants to turn into meat eaters. This was done in part, with a stealthy trick: repurposing genes meant for their roots and leaves and using them instead to catch prey, a new study finds.

The meat-eating shift gave these plants a number of advantages. In effect, "carnivorous plants have turned the tables by capturing and consuming nutrient-rich animal prey, enabling them to thrive in nutrient-poor soil," the researchers wrote in the study, published online May 14 in the journal Current Biology.

There are hundreds of carnivorous plant species, but the researchers chose to look at three related insect-eating plants, all members of the Droseraceae family. All three of these plants use motion to capture prey, the researchers said.

One plant is the familiar Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), a native to the wetlands of the Carolinas that has influenced Pokιmon characters, made appearances in various Saturday morning cartoons, and even inspired a Broadway play. The closely related aquatic waterwheel plant (Aldrovanda vesiculosa) occupies the waters of almost every continent. It has spindly underwater flaps that quickly tighten around unsuspecting marine animals. The third plant investigated, the beautiful but deadly sundew plant (Drosera spatulata), is common in Australia. Luring victims with sweetness, the sundew rolls up a sticky strip around its catch.
