Elisabeth Rosenthal: We All Have Pre-existing Conditions (NY Times)
Renée Martin was thrown into an unaffordable high-risk pool because of an abnormal Pap smear. Lisa Solod got turned away by four insurers because she was on thyroid replacement, an asthma inhaler and hormones - a not uncommon trifecta for women in their 50s. Wanda Wickizer was priced out of having insurance because she had taken Lexapro for depression. Jesse Albert found that he and his family were uninsurable because he had once had a benign skin cancer and a bout of hepatitis C, even though his immune system had cleared the virus.
Jeff Shesol: "John F. Kennedy: An Idealist Without Illusions" (NY Times)
Kennedy once told the historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. that the problem with Theodore Roosevelt was that "he talked a lot but didn't do very much." Kennedy gave grand speeches, but had no real patience for talk - least of all talk "unrelated to reality." When he set goals, he announced plans and asked to be judged by their results.
Mariana Alessandri: In Praise of Lost Causes (NY Times)
For the rest of his life, Unamuno urged his fellow Spaniards to practice quixotism, which meant adopting the moral courage necessary to fight for lost causes without caring what the world thinks. Today, when much of society and politics - both in and outside the United States - looks like a lost cause to a great number of people, we might do well to consider Quixote's brand of lunacy.
NICHOLAS FANDOS: In Renovation of Golf Club, Donald Trump Also Dressed Up History (NY Times)
"Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot," the inscription reads. "The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as 'The River of Blood.' " […] "No. Uh-uh. No way. Nothing like that ever happened there," said Richard Gillespie, the executive director of the Mosby Heritage Area Association, a historical preservation and education group devoted to an 1,800-square-mile section of the Northern Virginia Piedmont, including the Lowes Island site.
Born Margarita Carmen Cansino, the press coined the term "love goddess" to describe this American actress and dancer. By what name is she better known?
Inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2011, and the winner of 6 Grammy Awards, this musician was born Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack. What is his stage name?
Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack (born November 21, 1940), better known by the stage name Dr. John, is an American singer, songwriter, voice actor, pianist, and guitarist, whose music combines blues, pop, jazz, zydeco, boogie woogie, and rock and roll.
Active as a session musician since the late 1950s, he gained a cult following in the late 1960s following the release of his album Gris-Gris and his appearance at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music. He performed a wildly theatrical stage show inspired by medicine shows, Mardi Gras costumes, and voodoo ceremonies. Rebennack has recorded more than 20 albums and in 1973 scored a top-20 hit with "Right Place Wrong Time".
The winner of six Grammy Awards, Rebennack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend on March 14, 2011. In May 2013, Rebennack was the recipient of an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Tulane University. He was jokingly referred to by Tulane's president, Scott Cowen, as "Dr. Dr. John".

Robert De Niro says that "in movie terms," the country was once "an inspiring uplifting drama" but now has turned into "a tragic dumbass comedy."
The two-time, Oscar-winning actor spoke to Brown University graduates Sunday at the Ivy League school's commencement ceremonies. He urged them to "work to stop the insanity" and to strive to make the world better.
De Niro received an honorary doctorate of fine arts.
Actor and rapper Daveed Diggs, who won a Tony Award for his role in the phenomenon "Hamilton," also was among those who received honorary degrees. Diggs told the graduates that the country needs their new ideas "because the old ones have made a mess of things."
It's not really a Marvel movie without a Stan Lee cameo, and apparently that rule goes for theme park rides too. The Marvel Comics legend is a part of the new Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! ride at Disneyland.
An Instagram user published a photo from the attraction, which opened to the public Saturday at Disney California Adventure, revealing that Lee appears in the lobby. According to the several social media posts, park goers were waiting in line for over five hours to try the new Guardians of the Galaxy ride, so they had plenty of time to check out the fascinating lobby.
Luckily, there's tons of Easter eggs to keep audiences entertained while waiting for the drop tower, which used to be the Tower of Terror. The lobby is designed to be the Collector's lair. Taneleer Tivan, played by Benicio Del Toro in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film, collects tons of odd alien things, from artifacts to Howard the Duck. According to the Hollywood Reporter, there are over 2,200 artifacts to keep Marvel fans fascinated during the wait. It looks like Lee is among his collection in the Disneyland attraction.
It isn't clear if Lee's appearance will connect to his cameo in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" as a man talking to the Watchers or to his appearance in the first film where he Rocket called him a "Class A creeper" while speaking to a younger woman. However, it seems unlikely to connect to any of Lee's other cameos. Fans should know that this isn't the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that they're looking at, according to director James Gunn.
The Great Barrier Reef - a canary in the coal mine for global warming - can no longer be saved in its present form partly because of the "extraordinary rapidity" of climate change, experts have conceded.
Instead, action should be taken to maintain the World Heritage Site's 'ecological function' as its ecological health declines, they reportedly recommended.
Like coral across the world, the reef has been severely damaged by the warming of the oceans with up to 95 per cent of areas surveyed in 2016 found to have been bleached.
Bleaching is not always fatal but a study last year found the "largest die-off of corals ever recorded" with about 67 per cent of shallow water coral found dead in a survey of a 700km stretch.

Greenland's Rink Glacier is not just melting faster than usual: The hot summers of 2010 and 2012 saw the interior of the glacier sliding like a popsicle coming out of its wrapper, a NASA study found.
The study found the ice wave lasted four months, with mass from upstream replacing whatever was lost at the bottom due to warming. NASA said this solitary wave has implications for the future rate of sea level rise.
The findings were published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, used a GPS sensor for the study, measuring its horizontal motion as the ice melted. There is a network of 50 GPS stations on Greenland that track changes below the earth's surface by measuring vertical motions. The study by the three scientists is the first to try to measure the changes horizontally as well.
Greenland drained about 11 billion tons of ice per year in the early 2000s. In 2012, which was unusually hot, the output increased by more than 60 percent to 17.7 gigatons. That additional 6.7 gigatons was in the form of a single wave from June through September. In the first three months, the wave traveled 2.5 miles. That increased to 7.5 miles in September.
On Friday, two men, Ricky John Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, were brutally murdered while trying to confront someone hurling anti-Muslim epithets on a comm in Portland.
The two have been widely hailed as heroes, but not by Donald Trump (R-Crooked) - until Monday.
Trump broke his silence with a tweet from the @POTUS handle. Forgive us if this doesn't seem to have come from Trump himself.
"The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable," the President wrote. "The victims were standing up to hate and intolerance. Our prayers are w/ them."
The statement was issued to his professional account, not his personal one which most of his alt-right base follows.

An Illinois man accuses Dennis "Sweaty Wrestler™" Hastert (R-Pedophile) in a new lawsuit of sexually assaulting him in bathroom stall when he was a fourth-grader, at least the fifth such allegation against the former House speaker who will soon be released from prison in a hush-money case.
The suit was filed in a suburban Chicago court for a man using the pseudonym Richard Doe. It alleges Hastert abused him after the boy stopped during a bicycle ride to use the restroom in the 1970s in Yorkville, Illinois, where Hastert was a high school wrestling coach, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The former Republican Illinois congressman, 75, has nearly completed a 15-month sentence for breaking banking law in trying to pay $3.5 million in hush money to one victim, referred to in filings in the criminal case as "Individual A." Previous accusers had been in high school.
Doe began crying when he recognized Hastert during gym at Yorkville Grade School weeks later as the man who abused him, the suit filed Friday in Kendall County Circuit Court says. The grade school is next to Yorkville High School, where Hastert worked.
The suit says Doe "was traumatized, repressed the sexual assault by Hastert, and was intimidated into silence." He says both Hastert and then-Kendall County State's Attorney Dallas Ingemunson warned the boy not to make the accusations public.
Rumors of Fox News host Sean Hannity being fired kept going while advertisers continued pulling out of sponsoring his show after he pushed for a conspiracy theory regarding the death of Democratic National Staffer, Seth Rich, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Sunday.
The report came after media watchdog, Media Matters For America, published a list of advertisers sponsoring Hannity's show on Fox. Hannity described the move as a "kill shot" aimed at forcing him out of Fox News.
It was also reported Sunday that Hannity's announcement of taking an extended Memorial Day vacation led to rumors of him getting fired from Fox News, according to the Inquisitr.
His own tweet about his weekend seemed ambiguous as well, ending with "Did Hannity do last show?"
Under a dual onslaught of global warming and localised, urban heating, some of the world's cities may be as much as eight degrees Celsius (14.4 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer by 2100, researchers warned Monday.
The projection is based on the worst-case-scenario assumption that emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases continue to rise throughout the 21st century.
The top quarter of most populated cities, in this scenario, could see the mercury rise 7 C or more by century's end, said a study in the journal Nature Climate Change.
For some, nearly 5 C of the total would be attributed to average global warming.
The rest would be due to the so-called Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, which occurs when cooling parks, dams and lakes are replaced by heat-conducting concrete and asphalt -- making cities warmer than their surrounds, the researcher said.
The State Department has quietly lifted Donald Trump's (R-Corrupt) restriction on the number of refugees allowed to enter the United States.
Mr Trump has sought to reduce the number of refugees allowed into the US annually from 110,000 to 50,000, and had signed an executive order suspending all refugee admissions for 120 days.
But the State Department has lifted its restriction on how many refugees are allowed to enter, with Jennifer Smith, a department official, notifying refugee groups in an email they could now begin bringing people to the US "unconstrained by the weekly quotas that were in place."
Refugee advocates told The New York Times it could double the number of refugees entering the country, from around 830 a week in the first three weeks of this month to over 1,500 a week by next month.
