Joe Bob Briggs: My name is Joe Bob, and I'm an English major. (Taki's Magazine)
I feel like I need to confess my addiction, like a newbie in a 12-step program. My name is Joe Bob, and I'm an English major. I'm not asking for your pity. I've been trying to overcome this addiction on my own for several decades now, and so I'm turning it over to a higher power.
Joe Bob Briggs: I Apologize for This Column in Advance (Taki's Magazine)
Yet Pepsi apologized. What they should have said is "Since it's a commercial, and since it's been needlessly attacked on specious grounds, we're going to withdraw it in order to protect our shareholders." By apologizing they turned Kendall Jenner into a public moron delivering a racist message.
Jonathan Chait: Trump's Racist Immigration Policy Is Backfiring on Him (NY Mag)
The general operating method of Republican politics is to use ethnonationalist resentment to generate support for elite-driven anti-government policy. That is, there is one basket of issues Republicans use to harvest votes - talking tough against communists or terrorists; defending the flag; posturing against criminals; getting tough on welfare cheats - and then the different basket of policy objectives they spend their political capital on - tax cuts for the rich, deregulation for business.
Jonathan Chait: "Most Unpatriotic President Ever Says Kneeling NFL Players 'Shouldn't Be in the Country'" (NY Mag)
The owners of the NFL, with their majority-black rosters and flag-drenched spectacles of patriotic cheese, believe their safest course of action is to capitulate to the bullying president. This calculation is probably wrong. What is absolutely certain is that, in collaborating with Trump, they have shown their country how little regard they have for the deeper values of the patriotism they claim to be upholding, but in fact, are merely selling.

PornHub may not technically track you, but their advertisers and Google can tie all of that information to your personal identity. Even more so, if you're signed into your Google account on Google Chrome. But we trust Google to never use that information in a troubling way … right?
Daniel Politi: FBI Is Asking Everyone to Reboot Their Routers to Stop Russian Malware Infection (Slate)
The FBI made a bombshell announcement on Friday that is only starting to gain a bit of traction over the weekend. Russian hackers have developed a sophisticated malware system that has already infected hundreds of thousands of routers. The good news is that the recommendation on how to combat the infection is easy enough-turn it off and then turn it back on again. Anyone who has a home or small office router should go ahead and do that just to be safe.

Marc's Guide to Curing Cancer
So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.

Lots & lots of commercials for candidates on local TV.
Charter schools have spent a tremendous amount of money between Antonio Villaraigosa (formerly known as
'Mayor Horndog'), running for governor, and Marshall Tuck for state superintendent of schools, a Harvard Business School grad, who is obviously their golden child - a child whose age seems to be a secret.
'Happytime Murders' Creators Respond
'Sesame Street' Lawsuit
Sesame Workshop, the creators of Sesame Street, filed a lawsuit last week against the producers of the upcoming film "The Happytime Murders," claiming trademark infringement over their tagline "No sesame. All street."
"The Happytime Murders" is a raunchy R-rated movie produced by The Jim Henson Company that stars Melissa McCarthy. It is set in a world where humans and Sesame Street-style puppets coexist.
The film's creators, STX Entertainment, sent HuffPost a response to the lawsuit that they said was crafted by their puppet lawyer Fred, Esq. They included Fred's photo as well.
"STX loved the idea of working closely with Brian Henson and the Jim Henson Company to tell the untold story of the active lives of Henson puppets when they're not performing in front of children. 'Happytime Murders' is the happy result of that collaboration and we're incredibly pleased with the early reaction to the film and how well the trailer has been received by its intended audience. While we're disappointed that Sesame Street does not share in the fun, we are confident in our legal position. We look forward to introducing adult moviegoers to our adorably unapologetic characters this summer." - Fred, Esq., lawyer for STX Entertainment

Hero Saves Child
Mamoudou Gassama
A young immigrant who was hailed a hero after saving the life of a young child dangling from a Paris balcony has now been offered French citizenship.
In dramatic video taken Saturday, Mamoudou Gassama, originally from Mali, is seen climbing several balconies to reach the child on the fourth floor. He grabs the boy and brings him to safety.
Footage of Gassama - who's been dubbed "Spider-Man" because of how swiftly he scaled the building - was shared to social media.
Gassama, 22, was reportedly in the neighborhood to watch a soccer match when he heard screams from outside and sprang into action, realizing the dire situation.
Elysee Palace announced Gassama, who has been in the country for a few months, will receive French citizenship to thank him for his heroics. He also met Macron Monday.

Protests
A Florida police officer is facing mounting backlash over a Facebook comment in which he seemingly wished violence upon Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg and other young gun control activists. The now-deleted post was in response to "die in" protests held Friday in the parking lot of giant supermarket chain Publix, which previously made large donations to the political campaigns of National Rifle Association supporters.
"Hope some old lady loses control of her car in that lot. Jus saying….." Coconut Creek police officer Brian Valenti allegedly wrote on the Coral Springs/Parkland Facebook page, according to screenshots obtained by The Sun-Sentinel.
The comment was posted under a picture of Hogg and two other #NeverAgain activists standing in the parking area of a Coral Springs Publix store, where they had just finished painting body outlines in chalk to represent the 17 people killed in February at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, located only a few miles away.
The Coral Springs Police Department did not immediately return Newsweek 's request for comment regarding Valenti's post. According to The Sun-Sentinel, the police officer has since apologized.
"The officer admitted that it was in poor taste, and indicated that it was meant as a joke, but certainly didn't come off that way," wrote Police Chief Butch Arenal in an email to the newspaper. "It is for that reason that he thought it better to remove the post. He will be offering an apology, as he has indicated that he wants to do whatever he has to do to make it right."

Painting Attacker
Ivan the Terrible
Russia on Monday called for the harshest possible punishment after a visitor to Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery caused serious damage by attacking a famous 19th-century painting of Ivan the Terrible.
On Friday, Russian police arrested a 37-year-old man who used a metal pole to break the glass covering Ilya Repin's painting of the 16th-century tsar killing his son, damaging the work in three places.
Russia's deputy culture minister Vladimir Aristarkhov told a news conference the gallery on Monday that his ministry expects the man to receive "the most severe punishment possible".
Under current law, the man faces up to three years in prison.
Russian media said the man -- a builder named Igor Podporin -- vandalised the painting for "historical reasons" and later told police he acted under the influence of alcohol after drinking a shot of vodka.

Memorial Day Messages
Former president Barack Obama has issued a Memorial Day message - saying America can never 'truly repay' the debt to the fallen - in remarks many contrasted with those of Donald Trump (R-Vacuous).
In a tweet posted on Monday morning while Mr Trump was attending a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Mr Obama wrote: "We can never truly repay the debt we owe our fallen heroes." He added: "But we can remember them, honour their sacrifice, and affirm in our own lives those enduring ideals of justice, equality, and opportunity for which generations of Americans have given that last full measure of devotion."
Many compared the former president's tweet with one from Mr Trump a few hours earlier, in which he inserted politics into the day, and sought to suggest those who died fighting would be "very happy and proud" with his performance as president.
"Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today," wrote Mr Trump.
"Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for blacks and hispanics EVER (& women in 18 years), rebuilding our military and so much more. Nice!"

Retiring Early
Rep. Ryan Costello (R-Pa.) isn't running for Congress again next year because he's fed up ... particularly with talking about Trump.
"No matter what I say or do, I feel all I do is answer questions about Donald Trump rather than health insurance or tax policy," said Costello in a report by CNN that interviewed three of the many Republicans leaving the House at the end of this year.
Costello revealed that he's not seeking re-election because it's been extremely trying to juggle work and family while working in a state that's been rapidly shifting its dominant political party.
On the current state of Congress, the 41-year-old said, "I feel, increasingly, that if you're a member of Congress, they assume that you're not good. They assume that you're not telling the truth. No matter what you do, someone's out there locked and loaded to say something disparaging, false, mean, in an attempt to have other people not like you."
The congressman elaborated by saying that since the Pennsylvania state Supreme Court redrew the district, it's far more Democratic-leaning. For him to not run again was a no-brainer.

Popcorn Time
California
Twenty-three years ago, Scott Baugh was a little-known Southern California lawyer whose conservative politics and youthful brio impressed Republican U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Putin's Plaything), who steered his new protege to a seat in the state Legislature.
Now, Baugh wants the congressman's job.
What was once a political kinship forged around the values of the Reagan revolution has deteriorated into a nasty rivalry in a state where Republicans can scarcely afford it.
Democrats are pursuing a string of Republican-held House seats in California, four of them partially or entirely in Orange County. But in the 48th District, Rohrabacher also is fighting off one of his own.
The bad blood between the old allies appears to stem at least partly from Baugh's belief that the congressman reneged on plans to retire at the end of the current term. It also reflects a new reality in the increasingly Democratic state: Republicans fighting over their shrinking turf.
