Trivia Question from Yesterday

A Caryatid serves as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar. What is a Caryatid sculpted to look like?

A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means "maidens of Karyai", an ancient town of Peloponnese. Karyai had a temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis in her aspect of Artemis Karyatis: "As Karyatis she rejoiced in the dances of the nut-tree village of Karyai, those Karyatides, who in their ecstatic round-dance carried on their heads baskets of live reeds, as if they were dancing plants".

An atlas or telamon is a male version of a caryatid, i.e. a sculpted male statue serving as an architectural support.        Source

INFO ABOUT TARA READE
Natashe Korecki: "'Manipulative, deceitful, user': Tara Reade left a trail of aggrieved acquaintances" (Politico) A number of those who crossed paths with Biden's accuser say they remember two things: She spoke favorably about her time working for Biden, and she left them feeling duped.

Michael J. Stern (ex-prosecutor): Why I'm skeptical about Reade's sexual assault claim against Biden (USA Today)
If we must blindly accept every allegation of sexual assault, the #MeToo movement is just a hit squad. And it's too important to be no more than that.

Anecdotes

Parties

• Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock calls himself a frustrated techie because he loves to fix things. While he was attending a late-night party, he noticed that a telephone socket was broken, so he crawled under a table and fixed it. Puzzled, a guest asked, "Why is the telephone man here in the middle of the night?" Another guest replied, "That's not the telephone man; that's Herbie Hancock."

• As an opera singer, soprano Helen Traubel had to take care of her voice. When she sent out invitations for a party, the invitations requested, "IF YOU HAVE A COLD, PLEASE STAY HOME."

Practical Jokes

• After Dee Dee Ramone left the Ramones, he started another band and toured throughout Europe. One day, Chris, his guitarist, passed out after drinking too much, providing an opportunity for a practical joke. Chase, Dee Dee's drummer, used Wite-Out and a black Magic Marker to make up Chris's face like that of Kiss vocalist/guitar player Paul Stanley, who while on-stage had a white face with a black star over his right eye. (Chris was a good sport, especially at first, although perhaps he was not so good a sport after realizing that the Magic Marker was permanent.)

• Basso Luigi Lablache, a large man, once stayed at the same hotel as General Tom Thumb, a little person. A celebrity-hunter knocked on Lablache's door, hoping to see Tom Thumb. Discovering the celebrity-hunter's mission, Lablache identified himself as Tom Thumb. Of course, the celebrity-hunter was astonished, saying, "But you were much smaller when I saw you on the stage yesterday." Lablache agreed that that was true: "Yes, that is how I have to appear, but when I get home to my own rooms I let myself out and enjoy myself."

• When opera singer Enrico Caruso was made Honorary Captain of the New York Police Force, he asked the Police Commissioner if he could now arrest people. The Commissioner replied that he could, and Mr. Caruso said, "I must go to the Metropolitan right away. I will play a funny on Mr. Gatti." (Mr. Gatti was Giulio Gatti-Casazza, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera.)

• At a recital, tenor Richard Lewis once gave an encore in which he sang the "Oliver Cromwell" song (folk text; set by Benjamin Britten). After singing the line "If you want any more, you can sing it yourself," he disappeared.

Practice

• As you would expect, cellist Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich took music, including practicing music, seriously. One day, Olga, his daughter, was supposed to be practicing the cello, but thinking that her father had left their house, she decided to read instead. Big mistake. Her father was present. Hearing that she was not practicing, he stormed in, grabbed her cello and started chasing her, threatening to kill her with it and ordering her to stop running. (She decided not to stop running.) Outside of their house, they ran into DmitriShostakovich, who convinced Mr. Rostropovich that his daughter did not deserve to die. (Presumably, she practiced assiduously after this experience.)

• Muggsy Spanier left his trumpet one evening at a nightclub. The next morning, he needed it, so he went to the nightclub to pick it up. There he found Earl Hines, the father of jazz piano, practicing. But instead of practicing jazz or blues piano, he was playing the classics: Mozart and Beethoven piano concertos. Mr. Spanier was surprised, but Mr. Hines simply smiled and told him, "Just keeping the fingers loose."

Charity Read-Along

'James & The Giant Peach'

The Roald Dahl Story Company has brought together Taika Waititi and a host of stars, including Ryan Reynolds, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Lupita Nyong'o, Meryl Streep, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris and Liam Hemsworth and Cara Delevingne, to read classic children's novel James and the Giant Peach in full, across 10 episodes.

The reading, part of a charity push to aid those impacted by Covid-19, will air exclusively on the Roald Dahl YouTube channel.

The Roald Dahl Story Company will be donating more than £1M to charities impacted by Covid-19, including Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity in the UK, which provides specialist nurses to seriously ill children. The collaboration specifically also aims to raise money for Partners In Health, a medical and social justice organisation fighting the pandemic in some of the most vulnerable communities around the world.

Waititi said, "Being an adult child myself and having read James and the Giant Peach to my girls multiple times, I'm excited to be able to partner with my friends, the Dahl team and Partners In Health and re-tell this story to help those most in need right now. This wacky, wonderful tale is about resilience in children, triumph over adversity and dealing with a sense of isolation which couldn't been more relevant today."

Springsteen to Join Dropkick Murphys

Fenway Park

Not even a pandemic can keep Boston's Dropkick Murphys from playing ball, musically speaking. Following the veteran Celtic punk band's "Streaming Up from Boston" Saint Patrick's Day livestream concert, they've upped the ante and will perform at the city's historic Fenway Park on May 29 - with no live audience, per state COVID-19 social distancing orders.

There will, however, be one very important guest joining the band on the Boston Red Sox's home turf, or at least on the big screen overhead: Bruce Springsteen is on board for a song swap-off.

Springsteen played the first-ever full Fenway Park concert in 2003. The following year, during the regular Red Sox season, the Dropkick Murphys debuted their song "Tessie," which honors a local diehard Sox fan. That year the Curse of the Bambino was broken and the Sox won the World Series.

Springsteen and the Dropkicks will not only perform the first-ever Fenway Park livestream concert, but this will mark the first concert of the pandemic without an in-person audience in any major U.S. arena, stadium or ballpark.

"Streaming Outta Fenway" begins at 6 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. PT via the band's Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Twitch pages. The worldwide simulcast will benefit multiple charities and is presented by Boston-area tech company Pega.

Whistleblower Segment

'60 Minutes'

Donald Trump (R-Grifter) fumed over a 60 Minutes segment in which Norah O'Donnell interviewed coronavirus whistleblower Rick Bright, with the president going so far as to suggest that ViacomCBS chairwoman Shari Redstone "knows how to make things right."

Bright, former director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, filed a whistleblower complaint last month, contending that he was ousted for refusing to promote the drug hydroxychloroquine as a coronavirus treatment. He also claims that leaders at the Department of Health and Human Services ignored his warnings about the coronavirus and the need to prepare for the pandemic.

Trump wrote in a series of three tweets, "@60Minutes & third place anchor, @NorahODonnell, are doing everything in their power to demean our Country, much to the benefit of the Radical Left Democrats. Tonight they put on yet another Fake 'Whistleblower', a disgruntled employee who supports Dems, fabricates stories,

Bright, who had been focused on vaccine development, filed a whistleblower complaint after his ouster, in which he was transferred to a different position at the National Institutes of Health. He testified before a House subcommittee this week, at which time Trump also referred to him as a disgruntled employee.

On 60 Minutes, Bright told O'Donnell, "I am not disgruntled. I am frustrated at a lack of leadership. I am frustrated at a lack of urgency to get a head start on developing lifesaving tools for Americans. I'm frustrating- strated at our inability to be heard as scientists. Those things frustrate me."

In Jeopardy

New Season

The first new TV season of the coronavirus era is facing an understandably shaky start that comes with a tacit disclaimer: No one is sure when it will arrive.

Studios, guilds and trade groups are huddling to find ways to ease a near-complete production shutdown, among the nationwide efforts to curb the pandemic. While streaming services parcel out series year-round, broadcast TV still relies heavily on a September filled with fanfare and high-profile scripted shows.

How that will happen is a cliffhanger only a masochistic screenwriter would envision.

ABC, CBS and NBC are holding back their 2020-21 schedules which, in an ordinary year, would have been unveiled earlier this month in elaborate presentations to ad buyers in New York. Another broadcaster, CW, said it's aiming for a January start to its new season, based on production resuming this fall.

CW's chairman and CEO, Mark Pedowitz, was asked if even that was realistic. "As realistic as anything else is at this point," he said.

Guidelines For Humans to Abide by in Space

The Artemis Accords

Over the next few years, we'll finally be heading back to the Moon. But with nearly 50 years in between our last Moon jaunt and this one, a lot has changed.

With private companies becoming a huge part of space programs and the rise of many international space agencies, space is getting rather crowded, so some new rules may be needed to help everyone play nice.

That's why NASA has just provided a set of agreements - which they've termed the Artemis Accords - for other international space agencies and private companies to abide by, while a new generation of astronauts are enjoying the off-world views.

These Accords are exactly what you would expect from NASA - they include peace, transparency, interoperability (the ability of products or systems to work with different products or systems). But there are also some very interesting agreements for us space nerds to dig into.

You can read all of the Artemis Accords here.

Repeat 'Dust Bowl' Twice As Likely

Climate Change

Due to global warming, the United States is today more than twice as likely to endure a devastating "dust bowl" scenario than during the Great Depression, researchers said Monday.

Nearly a decade of heatwaves and massive dust storms across the US Great Plains in the 1930s ruined agricultural land and drove tens of thousands of farming families far and wide in search for food and work.

"The 1930s Dust Bowl heatwaves were extremely rare events that we might expect to see occur once in a hundred years," said Tim Cowan, a researcher at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia, and lead author of a study in Nature Climate Change.

"Under today's levels of greenhouse gases, they are more than twice as likely to occur, with their period-of-return reduced to once in around 40 years."

A study last month in the journal Science concluded that the western United States has likely entered a period of megadrought -- the fourth in 1,200 years -- that could last decades, even a century.

Wins Praise

WHO

The World Health Organization received praise from many countries but fierce criticism from the United States at its virtual assembly, as members sought to agree a joint response to COVID-19 -- and assurances that any vaccine would be available to all.

"COVID-19 must be a wake-up call. It is time for an end to the hubris," United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the virtual assembly.

The annual World Health Assembly (WHA) has this year been trimmed from the usual three weeks to just two days, and is focusing solely on the pandemic, which has killed over 315,000 people globally.

Speaking by video-link, a wide range of country leaders and health ministers hailed the WHO's efforts to coordinate the response, and urged more funding and stronger support for the UN agency.

But US health secretary Alex Azar (R-Deluded) blamed the WHO for not obtaining or providing the information needed to stem the pandemic.

Rare Dinosaur Identified In Australia

Elaphrosaur

A fossil unearthed in Australia by a volunteer digger has been identified as a rare, toothless dinosaur that roamed the country 110 million years ago.

The elaphrosaur, whose name means "light-footed lizard", was related to the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptor.

The five-centimetre (two-inch) vertebrae fossil was discovered during a dig near Cape Otway in Victoria in 2015.

It is the first elaphrosaur bone ever to be found in Australia.

At the time, it was thought to be from a flying reptile called a pterosaur. But when palaeontologists at Swinburne University in Melbourne studied the fossil further, they realised it was a delicately-built dinosaur.
