BadtotheboneBob's Trivia Question of the Day

In December '74, Paul McCartney wanted to do a science-fiction movie musical. Who was the notable sci-fi author that he asked to write the screenplay?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What country is the world's largest producer of emeralds?

      Colombia                                                      Source

Emerald is a gemstone, and a variety of the mineral beryl (Be3Al2(SiO3)6) colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Beryl has a hardness of 7.5-8 on the 10-point Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Most emeralds are highly included, so their toughness (resistance to breakage) is classified as generally poor.

Emeralds in antiquity have been mined in Egypt since 1500 BCE, and India, and Austria since at least the 14th century CE.

Colombia is by far the world's largest producer of emeralds, constituting 50-95% of the world production, with the number depending on the year, source and grade. Emerald production in Colombia has increased drastically in the last decade, increasing by 78% from 2000 to 2010. The three main emerald mining areas in Colombia are Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor. Rare 'trapiche' emeralds are found in Colombia, distinguished by a six-pointed radial pattern made of ray-like spokes of dark carbon impurities.        Source

  Yeah!
PS: Yesterday was a lovely day for a First Holy Communion. After a 2 hour Mass (1 - 3 PM) we went downstairs to the "Parish Hall" for a little party with cake and ice cream, and mingled with the priest, deacon, and teachers...
It was very nice, but these kids hadn't eaten since around 11 AM, then they filled up on the sugar, and were running wild!
Of course by the time we got home, they didn't want to eat any of the food mom, et al., provided! But I did, and it was wonderful too!! Nice day, but taxing...

Dale of Emerald Springs, Norcaliful, replied:
Colombian emeralds are of the highest quality on this planet. Oiled or unoiled they gots to be deep green or they ain't no emerald but a beryl…get it?
Emeralds were also used as good luck talismans, and to keep away bad and negative spirits. They are said to induce peace and calm, and were also believed to cure epilepsy. Part of Harpies folklore. Boys or Girls?

  Gemology:
  Mohs' Hardness: 7 1/2 - 8
  Specific Gravity: 2.67- 2.78
Chemical Composition: Al2Be3 (Si6O18) aluminum beryllium silicate
  Refractive Index: 1.576-1.582
Crystal System: Hexagonal (trigonal); hexagonal prisms, columnar

DJ Useo responded:
I know this one. The answer is Colombia.
My wife loves jewels, and we shared a film recently on professionals buying emeralds from Colombia.
Beauty that comes from sadness, it seems to me.
The rich use the poor to obtain the stones they crave.

Hello Bartcop fans,

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and provide email lists and groups for those who might put something together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to active@bartcop.com.

So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.

I did an interview on Netroots Radio about Bart's passing

The most active open discussion is on Bart's Facebook page.

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received. Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate button on bartcop.com

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So here's the signup link for this email list.

CBS News Mum On Status

Lara Logan

CBS News declined to comment on the status of its well-known "60 Minutes" correspondent Lara Logan following the publication of an article in New York magazine that suggested the journalist's return to the program after making an embarrassing flub in a segment broadcast last October about U.S. operations in Benghazi, Libya, was not definite.

When asked for an update on Logan's status with the network and a day when she might return, "60 Minutes" spokesman Kevin Tedesco replied, "We will decline to comment" via email. The New York article, by writer Joe Hagan, said Logan's return to the venerable newsmagazine "in recent weeks has not appeared certain."

During the Nov. 20 broadcast of "60 Minutes," Logan delivered a rare on-air mea culpa, telling viewers that producers came to realize they had "been misled, and that it was a mistake to include him in our report" after a discovery that Davies had given a different account of his time in Benghazi to the FBI. In the segment, Davies claimed to be an eyewitness to the attack by insurgents that left U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three others dead.

The New York profile alleged Logan enjoyed a favored status at CBS News that others did not, and was allowed to break rules regarding overseas security for correspondents and even venture into punditry. Her producer on the segment, Max McClellan, has also been suspended.

Sues to Stop Biopic

Gregg Allman

Gregg Allman has filed a lawsuit in order to stop production on Midnight Rider, a film based on the rock legend's 2012 memoir, My Cross to Bear. According to The Associated Press, Allman's attorneys issued the suit last week in Savannah, Georgia, requesting Unclaimed Freight Productions "to cease all efforts to make a motion picture based upon the life of Gregg Allman and/or his autobiography." This legal action follows a February tragedy in which a freight train struck crew members on a southeast Georgia track, killing 28-year-old camera assistant Sarah Jones and injuring six others.

The train incident took place on February 20th in Wayne County, Georgia, on a trestle that spans the Altamaha River. Investigators claim the producers were not given permission to film at the tracks, owned by CSX Railroad. Production was indefinitely suspended following the crash, prompting lead actor William Hurt (who was set to portray Allman) to withdraw from the film.

According to the lawsuit, Allman's team claims the producers lost their rights to the project after failing to begin principal photography by February 28th - and after failing to pay Allman $9,000 of an unspecified sum for the story's rights. Allman's attorneys reviewed footage shot on the tracks prior to the crash and claimed in the suit that "none of it contained any dialogue whatsoever or appeared suitable for inclusion in the film."

In an affidavit dated April 28th, Allman says, "Through my representatives, I have objected to Defendants' plan to proceed with the motion picture." Nonetheless, Unclaimed Freight plans to proceed with the film. Allman has requested an order which would restrain producers from continuing with the project until the suit is resolved, and a hearing is scheduled for May 12th.

Crackdown On US Nuns Continues

Pope Frankie

The Vatican official overseeing the crackdown on the largest umbrella group for U.S. nuns is pressing forward with the overhaul under Pope Francis.

Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, the Vatican orthodoxy watchdog, reprimanded officers of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious for planning to honor a theologian who had been criticized by U.S. bishops and said the sisters must show more willingness to cooperate shut up, sit down, remember they are only women.

Mueller made the remarks in a meeting last Wednesday with the group's leaders in Rome. He apologized repeatedly for speaking so bluntly, while reminding the sisters their organization held its status within the church only through Vatican approval.

The reform order was issued in 2012 under now-retired Pope Benedict XVI, after an investigation concluded the nuns' group had taken positions that undermined Roman Catholic teaching on the priesthood and homosexuality while promoting "radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith." Investigators praised the nuns' humanitarian work, but accused them of focusing too much on social justice and ignoring critical issues, such as fighting abortion.

Presents Dire Picture

Climate Report

The Obama administration is more certain than ever that global warming is changing Americans' daily lives and will worsen - conclusions that scientists will detail in a massive federal report to be released Tuesday.

Once people thought global warming was more in the future and more of an issue in other parts of the world, but the National Climate Assessment will emphasize how the United States is already paying the multibillion-dollar price for man-made climate change, said study co-author Donald Wuebbles, a climate scientist at the University of Illinois.

This final report is a rewritten and shortened version of a draft that was released in January 2013, with more scientific references, reviews by experts and the public, and a thorough review by the National Academy of Sciences, said Wuebbles and report lead author Gary Yohe of Wesleyan University in Connecticut. There is even stronger evidence than in 2013, Yohe said.

The draft came out just as meteorologists calculated that 2012 was the hottest year on record for the United States, but last year was slightly cooler than the 20th century average. And in the time since the draft report was released, the United States has seen lots of extremes.

'Routine' Flight Shuts Down System

U-2

An air traffic control glitch that caused hundreds of flight cancellations or delays across Southern California last week was triggered by a computer misinterpreting the flight path of a U-2 spy plane, the Federal Aviation Administration said on Monday.

A computer problem at an air traffic control center in Palmdale, California last Wednesday forced the delay or cancellation of more than 200 flights at Los Angeles International Airport.

"On April 30, 2014, an FAA air traffic system that processes flight plan information experienced problems while processing a flight plan filed for a U-2 aircraft that operates at very high altitudes under visual flight rules," FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said in a written statement issued by the agency.

Lunsford said the computer system misinterpreted the U-2 as a more typical low-altitude operation and became overwhelmed in trying to make sure that its flight path did not conflict with other air traffic in the region.

A Pentagon spokesman confirmed that the U-2 spy plane had flown over Southern California last Wednesday as part of a routine training mission but said he could not confirm that it was responsible for the computer glitch.

Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California; John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California; and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas were among other facilities affected by the order to keep planes grounded.

Special Place In Hell

Judge Jeanine Howard

Dallas prosecutors have called for a harsher penalty for a young Texas man who admitted to raping a 14-year-old girl and was sentenced last week by a judge to 45 days in jail and five years of probation.

State District Judge Jeanine Howard has come under criticism for the sentence and for telling the Dallas Morning News last week the girl "wasn't the victim she claimed to be."

The judge also told the paper last week the sentence was based on a review of the victim's medical records, which stated she was not a virgin and had previously given birth to a baby.

The girl (sic), now 17 years old, denied the judge's claims about her sexual past to WFAA-TV, saying she has never been pregnant.

Howard also sentenced Sir Young, who was 18 at the time of the crime, to 250 hours of community service at a rape prevention center, which refused to allow him onto its premises, saying it would be a slap in the face to the rape victims it counsels.

'Walk of Shame'

Elizabeth Banks

The Elizabeth Banks-starrer "Walk of Shame" lived up to its name during its opening weekend at the box office.

Focus Features' raunchy comedy grossed a dismal $38,000 from 51 locations this past week giving the pic, which cost $15 million to produce, a dismal per-screen average of $780.

"Walk of Shame" had the lowest per-screen average of all new specialty releases, far behind Fox Searchlight's period piece "Belle," which made $107,000 from just four theaters in Los Angeles and New York City. It's unlikely Focus will choose to expand the film much after those B.O. results.

The romcom was likely hurt by negative word-of-mouth after being panned by critics. "Walk of Shame" has a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "Watching the redoubtable Elizabeth Banks try to breathe life into the stillborn farce 'Walk of Shame' is like watching a team of paramedics perform CPR on the corpse of Ulysses S. Grant," Variety's Scott Foundas wrote in his review.

Risk of Death Jumps 50%

Pregnancy

For women in the United States, the lifetime risk of dying from a pregnancy-related cause has increased 50 percent over the last 15 years, according to a new report.

Women who are 15 years old in 2014 face a lifetime risk of dying of 1 in 2,400, up from 1 in 3,700 for women who were 15 in the year 2000, according to the report from the charity organization Save the Children. That means that in 2014, a woman in America has the same lifetime risk of pregnancy-related death as a woman in Iran or Romania, the report said.

The reason for the increase in the U.S. and other developed countries is not known, the researchers said. But it could be due a rise in the number of women with high-risk pregnancies, such as pregnant women with diabetes, heart disease or obesity; as well as an increase in women carrying twins and other multiples (related to treatment with fertility drugs), and more women having children at older ages, which can increase the risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications.

The U.S. fares worse than most other developed countries in terms of women's lifetime risk of pregnancy-related death - it ranks 46 out of 178 countries in the world. A woman in the United States is 10 times as likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause in her lifetime as a woman in Estonia, Greece or Singapore, the report said.

The sultanate of Brunei becomes the first East Asian country to introduce Islamic criminal law, the latest example of a deepening religious conservatism that has also taken root in parts of neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia.

Paris Artist

Steven Cohen

A South African performance artist who tied a live rooster to his penis during an impromptu open-air show near the Eiffel Tower was found guilty on Monday of "sexual exhibitionism", but the Paris court did not impose a sentence, prosecutors said.

Last September Steven Cohen danced on the tourist-filled Trocadero Plaza dressed in a corset, high heels, long red gloves and an elaborate feathered headdress with a rooster attached to his penis by a ribbon.

Against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, and under the amused and perplexed gaze of tourists, including a group of nuns, the spectacle lasted only a few moments before police arrested Cohen, dragging him across the plaza, rooster attached.

The Paris piece was a reaction to an increasingly homophobic, xenophobic and anti-Semitic world, Cohen told the newspaper.

He said the rooster, named Franck, was not harmed during the performance. The animal was chosen "because it's the emblem of France".
