Josh Marshall: "Priebus: Trump Considering Amending or Abolishing 1st Amendment" (TPM)
A number of press reports have picked up this exchange this morning between ABC's Jonathan Karl and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus. But people have missed the real significance. Priebus doesn't discuss changing 'press laws' or 'libel laws'. He specifically says that the White House has considered and continues to consider amending or even abolishing the 1st Amendment because of critical press coverage of President Trump.
Irvine Welsh - American Psycho is a modern classic (The Guardian)
When published in 1991, Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho caused outrage for its depictions of violence, especially towards women. That was its point, argues Irvine Welsh - it is a brilliant depiction of the savage society we've created.
Born William Lyle Richardson, this American actor is best known for portraying a grumpy but loving father in a movie, a title role in a TV horror series, and Murphy Brown's father. By what name s he better known?
Darren McGavin (born William Lyle Richardson, May 7, 1922 - February 25, 2006) was an American film, stage, and television actor best known for his portrayal of the grumpy but loving father in the film A Christmas Story, and for the title role in the television horror series Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
McGavin began his career in walk-on roles and later onstage, appearing in Broadway productions in 1953, and later played the title character in the 1950s television series Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. From 1959-1961, McGavin starred in the NBC Western series Riverboat, first with Burt Reynolds and then with Noah Beery, Jr., and in later years, he had a recurring role in the sitcom Murphy Brown, as the title character's father, for which he received an Emmy Award.

I was a big fan of "Murphy Brown," so I know that her father was played by Darren McGavin, otherwise known as William Lyle Richardson. I appreciated his workmanship as an actor; he apparently took on many varied roles during his career.

Billy in Cypress answered:
Darren McGavin, or Kolchak: The Night Stalker, is today's answer. If he were still alive today, he could make a whole new TV series based on CpPDJT-ID, his family, cabinet, staff, supporters and friends.

Doubling down on his factually iffy ideas about the Civil War, President Trump is releasing a documentary about the famous conflict that took place in either 1975 or 1985.
It's been said that Trump was so embarrassed after being roasted at the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner that it was the impetus for him to run for President.

Taking a full year to name a replacement for Michael Strahan beside Kelly Ripa on the morning chat show "Live" paid off in a big way for producers, who roped in Ryan Seacrest as co-host.
The former "American Idol" host debuted Monday on show, giving Ripa a marquee name to banter with at when she is about to go head-to head with Megyn Kelly on NBC's "Today" show. The stretch of guest co-hosts dragged on so long that there were rumors Ripa was more interested in going it alone than in finding a regular to join her.
Seacrest, 42, is a busy show-biz presence, hosting ABC's New Year's Eve show, red carpet coverage on E! Entertainment and a daily Los Angeles-based radio show. He has his own production company. But the ending of "American Idol" gave that show's host less of a regular television presence.
He'll move to New York for the new job, although he will continue his radio show.

Negotiations aimed at preventing a crippling strike by Hollywood movie and TV writers are down to the wire.
The changing nature of how television is delivered to viewers is a major reason for the impasse.
More than 400 series were available on broadcast, cable and rapidly expanding streaming platforms this season, double that of six years ago. But shows have fewer episodes than the roughly two dozen per season once common on network TV, and short runs of as few as eight to 12 episodes mean less money for writers getting paid on a per-episode basis.
The guild is seeking a wage increase and wants salary minimums to apply equally to streaming, cable and broadcast. Health care, an issue that echoes beyond Hollywood, also is on the table. The two sides are at odds over what concessions the guild would make in return for producers contributing more to the health plan.
TV viewers won't be laughing much if writers take a hike, with the most immediate impact on late-night talk and comedy shows including "Saturday Night Live."
In the 2007 walkout, shows including NBC's "Tonight" and CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman" went dark for two months. They returned during the strike either without writers or, in Letterman's case, with a separate guild deal through his production company. That won't be an option for CBS' current "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert because a CBS entity now produces it.
A Metallica cover band distraught after its equipment was stolen has been able to return to stage after a gift from surprise benefactors -- the metal legends themselves.
Blistered Earth, a four-piece band from Spokane, Washington that covers Metallica classics and emulates the group's headbanging look, said a trailer with all its gear was snatched after a show last week in Portland, Oregon.
After two days, the band -- which lost three guitars, two bass guitars and a drum-kit plus an array of amplifiers and pedals -- said everything had been replaced.
"Sometimes when bad things happen it really brings out the best in people," Blistered Earth wrote on Facebook.
James Hetfield "and the rest of the guys in Metallica (thanx guys) have seen fit to replace our equipment. Thank you guys!!"

They aren't the type you'd sprinkle over pasta. But University of New Hampshire researchers have found five new truffle species.
While other types of so-called deer truffles have been found across Europe and the western United States, the particular species doctoral student Ryan Stephens found in the White Mountain National Forest have never been formally identified and named.
More specifically, the truffles were found in Bartlett Experimental Forest, one of the most well-studied forests in New England, he said. They could contain important information about the health of the region's forests, scientists say. Two of the five have only been found in New Hampshire.
The New Hampshire-specific truffles have been named E. remickii, after UNH student Tyler Remick, who helped collect the truffles, and E. bartlettii, after Josiah Bartlett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first governor of New Hampshire.
Researchers have named a third - E. oreoides - because when cut it in half, it has a dark-light-dark pattern similar to an Oreo cookie and has a sweet odor.
The bloodletting at Fox News shows no sign of stopping after the conservative network announced that co-president Bill Shine (R-Enabler) was leaving.
After days of speculation that the days of Mr Shine - long seen as a close ally of former CEO Robert Ailes (R-Horndog) - were coming to an end, the network said he had resigned.
The departure of Mr Shine follows the ousting last month of leading anchor Bill "Loofah" O'Reilly (R-Propagandist), and the firing of Mr Ailes last year. Both Mr Ailes and Mr O'Reilly had been accused of sexual harassment, allegations they both denied.
Mr Shine had been with Fox News since its inception over 20 years ago.
On Monday, May 1, 2017, the Oscar Mayer brand announced major quality improvements being made to their total hot dog portfolio. Now, every single Oscar Mayer Hot Dog has no by-products, no added nitrates or nitrites (except those naturally occurring in celery juice), and no artificial preservatives in their meats; a first for a national manufacturer. To announce this bold move, the iconic Wienermobile traveled across New York Harbor on a barge, giving away free hot dogs. This move kicks off their summer-long mission of getting a better hot dog in people's hands across America, and how Oscar Mayer will go to great lengths #ForTheLoveOfHotDogs. This on-water journey is just the first stop of many on a tour that will take the Wienermobile vehicles to every corner of the country delivering a better dog.
The veteran journalists who first uncovered the Watergate scandal have spoken out against Donald Trump's (R-Fabulist) attacks on the media, warning the US President against undermining the country's free press.
Speaking at length at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the duo talked about the growing tension between the White House and the media, with Bernstein emphasising the importance of strong reporting "especially now".
Donald Trump was not present to hear the comments, instead holding a rally of his supporters. It was the first time a President has not attended the first White House Correspondent's Dinner of their tenure since 1981. Then, Ronald Reagan was recovering from an assassination attempt - but he still managed to make some comments over the phone.
Carl Bernstein opened with remarks about President Nixon's demonisation of the media in what had been an attempt to take attention away from his and many of his administrations' misconduct.
In the course of their speeches, they largely refrained from making direct parallels with the Trump administration. Nonetheless their comments struck a chord with the audience, who applauded rigorously.

T-rump 'Clearly Stands By' Description Of Obama As Evil
Spicey
After Donald Trump (R-Crooked) was pressed Monday morning as to whether he stood by derisive descriptions of President Barack Obama, White House press secretary spokesliar Sean Spicer affirmatively answered the question for him during the day's press briefing.
In an exchange with CBS's John Dickerson, Trump was asked about his classification of Obama as "sick and bad" in a series of March tweets in which he accused his predecessor of ordering a wiretap of Trump Tower. The president told Dickerson, "You can figure it out yourself," "I don't stand by anything," and "you can take it any way you want" at various points in the interview.
Asked for clarification by ABC News' Cecilia Vega on the claim that Trump doesn't "stand by anything" and "if he still believes President Obama is an evil guy," Spicer answered unequivocally.
"He clearly stands by that," said Spicer. "That's something he made clear if you look at the entire back and forth."
Trump never provided evidence for the allegations and the idea that Obama ordered the action has been debunked by intelligence officials and members of both major political parties.
Historians Monday valiantly tried, and mostly failed, to understand and interpret Donald Trump's (R-Doofus) remarks about President Andrew Jackson. Among other comments, Trump seemed to assert that Jackson, who died in 1845, could have prevented the Civil War, which began in 1861, and that the causes of the bloodiest conflict in the nation's history have not been addressed or discussed.
"I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn't have had the Civil War," said Trump in an interview with the Washington Examiner's Salena Zito. "He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart, and he was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said, 'There's no reason for this.' People don't realize, you know, the Civil War, you think about it, why? People don't ask that question. But why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?"
The comments, published Monday morning and broadcast on SiriusXM Radio, led to confusion over Trump's understanding of Jackson's beliefs and general American history.
There was also pushback against Trump's musings that Jackson could have prevented the Civil War and his suggestion that the seventh president - whose Indian Removal Act essentially legalized genocide - had a "big heart."
"Andrew Jackson himself was a slaveholder and the Jacksonians were slaveholders and they despised the abolitionists," said Eric Rauchway, a professor of history at UC Davis, "so it's hard for me to believe that they would have been able to prevent the Civil War. And actually it was Jacksonian policies - particularly those of James K. Polk, who styled himself as Young Hickory, as a direct heir to Andrew Jackson - which precipitated the Civil War. That's entirely wrong in every respect."
