Arwa Mahdawi: Ellen wants everyone to 'be kind' - maybe she should rethink what that means (The Guardian)
The notion of civility has been weaponized to shut down criticism and stop people from pointing out uncomfortable facts. It seems to be considered more unacceptable, in some parts of the media, to call someone a racist than to actually be a racist. It seems to be considered more unacceptable to criticize someone for hanging out with a war criminal than actually being a war criminal. "Be kind!" the 1% keep telling us, "don't you dare be critical!"
When Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple" premiered on Broadway in March, 1965, the play was directed by Mike Nichols, with Walter Matthau as Oscar Madison. Who portrayed Felix Ungar?
Blade Runner is a 1982 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, and written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples. Starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer and Sean Young, it is loosely based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968). The film is set in a dystopian future Los Angeles of 2019, in which synthetic humans known as replicants are bio-engineered by the powerful Tyrell Corporation to work on off-world colonies. When a fugitive group of advanced replicants led by Roy Batty (Hauer) escapes back to Earth, burnt-out cop Rick Deckard (Ford) reluctantly agrees to hunt them down.
Blade Runner initially underperformed in North American theaters and polarized critics; some praised its thematic complexity and visuals, while others were displeased with its slow pacing and lack of action. It later became an acclaimed cult film regarded as one of the all-time best science fiction films. Hailed for its production design depicting a "retrofitted" future, Blade Runner is a leading example of neo-noir cinema. The film's soundtrack, composed by Vangelis, was nominated in 1982 for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe as best original score.
Seven versions of Blade Runner exist as a result of controversial changes requested by studio executives. A director's cut was released in 1992 after a strong response to test screenings of a workprint. This, in conjunction with the film's popularity as a video rental, made it one of the earliest movies to be released on DVD. In 2007, Warner Bros. released The Final Cut, a 25th-anniversary digitally remastered version; the only version over which Scott retained artistic control.

It's based on the novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" It was written in 1968. I was a fan of science fiction (think "The Illustrated Man") so I"m surprised I didn't read this book. If I can find it at the library I guess this is as good a time as any to read it.
Seasonal and pleasant. Since our county is under SiP orders until May 17th, we might as well enjoy the weather. Lots of cyclists and walkers out during the weekend, and apparently maintaining social distancing, from what I could see.

• André Previn made his debut as a conductor at age 20 in Hollywood. At his first rehearsal, he stood in front of the orchestra, well aware of his youth, and wondering how he would be able to command the respect of the musicians in the orchestra, many of whom were his friends. He asked the oboe player for an A for the orchestra to tune up to, and he was shocked to hear an A-flat. He told the members of the orchestra, "Now everybody transpose a half-tone up." Everybody laughed, and Maestro Previn had earned the respect of the orchestra.
• Even when he was an old man, conductor Arturo Toscanini was known for his rages when things did not proceed to his satisfaction at rehearsals. After Toscanini flew into a rage at a rehearsal with his last orchestra, the NBC Symphony, one of the musicians asked first trumpet Harry Glantz, who had played under Toscanini when he was conducting the New York Philharmonic, "Was he any worse in his Philharmonic days?" Mr. Glantz significantly pointed out, "He was 15 years younger."
• Bruno Walter was a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic when he was distracted by first cellist Alfred Wallenstein, who never looked at him, but instead looked at the walls or other places where Maestro Walter was not to be seen. Maestro Walter spoke later with Mr. Wallenstein and discovered that his ambition was to be a conductor. Maestro Walter replied, "I only hope you don't have Wallenstein in front of you."
• In some cities, if you become famous enough, you will be honored with a plaque on the front wall of your house. While strolling through Bergamo, Italy, conductors Gianandrea Gavazzeni and Olivero de Fabritis saw such a plaque on the front wall of the house of opera composer Gaetano Donizetti. Mr. Gavazzeni said, "I wonder what they will write on our houses." Mr. de Fabritis answered, "FOR RENT."
• Erich Leinsdorf was a competent conductor, but one fault he had was a small beat. This was a problem for ballet dancers because dancing at a fast pace left little opportunity for catching his small beat. Some of the musicians in his orchestra also thought his beat was too small. At one rehearsal, one musician - a member of a strong union - used a telescope to focus on Mr. Leinsdorf's beat.
• One advantage of being a prominent conductor is being able occasionally to get advice from the prominent composer whose work you are conducting. Pierre Monteux occasionally worked with Claude Debussy, who used to stand behind him at rehearsals and sometimes shout, "Monteux, that's a forte, and when I write a forte, I want a forte!"
• Many great conductors have conducted without a score, and many great conductors have conducted with a score. When Hans Knappertsbusch was asked why he conducted with a score, he snapped, "Because I can read music."

• Atlantic Records' Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson once combed the backwaters of New Orleans looking for musical talent. They even walked to places where white taxi drivers feared to take them. Eventually, they found Professor Longhair playing in a shack and singing old-time blues. They listened for a while, and then Mr. Ertegun told Mr. Abramson, "My God, we've discovered a primitive genius." They then approached Professor Longhair, and Mr. Ertegun introduced himself and said, "You won't believe this, but I want to record you." Professor Longhair replied, "You won't believe this, but I just signed with Mercury."
-- THE ADMINISTRATION seems to have extensively participated in a piece in the NEW YORK POST about the president's inability to carve out time for lunch because he works too hard. MARK MEADOWS, the president's chief of staff, gave what appears to be his first on-the-record interview for the piece, where he said this: "I can tell you that the biggest concern I have as a new chief of staff is making sure he gets some time to get a quick bite to eat."

For years, especially before and after The Colbert Report was a thing, Comedy Central struggled to find ways to film the crucial post-Daily Show time slot. The irreverent news broadcast has been one of the network's biggest and most high-profile hits for a long time, but what could possibly live up to it well enough to make use of the coveted half-hour right after it airs? Well, Comedy Central seems to have finally found an answer, and, frankly, we're surprised it took this long to come up with this particular solution: As announced today in a press release, The Daily Show is expanding to 45-minute episodes for the first time in its storied 24-year history. Not even Jon Stewart dared to pull that off on a regular basis.
The press release says that Trevor Noah's Daily Show will go to 45 minutes starting tonight and will stay at that length "moving forward"-which we assume means even after things start to go back to normal post-pandemic. The press release also naturally toots The Daily Show's horn a little bit, saying that it's been the "first late-night stop for high profile guests" like Dr. Anthony Fauci and noting that it's both the highest-rated late night show among young viewers and the "most-engaging" late night show (whatever that means and however that's measured). Basically, The Daily Show is huge, especially the The Daily Social Distancing Show variation that Noah's been doing, and Comedy Central is finally-finally-giving it some room to expand.
With the film festival calendar thrown into chaos by COVID-19, Tribeca Enterprises and YouTube are teaming up to present a 10-day streaming event drawing from 20 global fests, including Cannes, Toronto, Sundance and Venice.
The online showcase, dubbed We Are One: A Global Film Festival, will kick off on YouTube on May 29. Its lineup of films, shorts, documentaries, music, comedy, and conversations will be released at a later date, organizers said.
All programming will be free for audiences to stream. Donations will benefit the World Health Organization's COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and local relief partners in various parts of the world.
The press release sent by the organizers claims there will be "new and classic" movies but features are largely expected to be library titles which had little exposure at the time. There aren't expected to be any movies scheduled for upcoming 2020 festivals, for obvious financial and rights reasons. For example, Cannes has not submitted any movies, we are told, but will be sending some masterclass content.
Amazon's streaming arrangement with South By Southwest, which goes live this week, provides something of a template for others exploring digital options. Because of that offering, SXSW is not among the participants in We Are One.
Goonies never say die! It's been 35 years since the Richard Donner-directed adventure pic The Goonies was released and became a benchmark in pop culture and served as a touchstone for the childhood of many. As episode one the series "Reunite Apart" with Josh Gad, which helps raise funds for a charity in each episode.
The first episode raised funds for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy to support their COVID-19 Response Fund. Gad welcomed the main cast including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton and Kerri Green. They reminisced about filming the movie and they also welcomed surprise guests throughout the reunion.
Joe Pantoliano and Robert Davi who played the villainous Fratelli brothers popped up during the conversation as well as writer Chris Columbus, executive producer Steven Spielberg and director Richard Donner. Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the movie's memorable track "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough", also made a cameo.
The cast reenacted scenes from the movie which Columbus joked they performed better now than they did then. They also shared behind-the-scenes stories and footage from the movie. And then the topic of a sequel came up (not to be confused with the forthcoming Fox pilot).
The Pentagon on Monday formally released three unclassified videos taken by Navy pilots that have circulated for years showing interactions with "unidentified aerial phenomena."
One of the videos shows an incident from 2004, and the other two were recorded in January 2015, according to Sue Gough, a Defense Department spokeswoman. The videos became public after unauthorized leaks in 2007 and 2017, and the Navy previously verified their authenticity.
"After a thorough review, the department has determined that the authorized release of these unclassified videos does not reveal any sensitive capabilities or systems, and does not impinge on any subsequent investigations of military air space incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena," Gough said.
The 2004 incident occurred about 100 miles out in the Pacific, according to The New York Times, which first reported on the video in 2017. Two fighter pilots on a routine training mission were dispatched to investigate unidentified aircraft that a Navy cruiser had been tracking for weeks.
The two other videos of incidents in 2015 include footage of objects moving rapidly through the air. In one, an object is seen racing through the sky and begins rotating in midair.
A giant Orthodox cathedral adorned with images of President Vladimir Putin and Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin is slated to be finished next month to commemorate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.
The Cathedral of the Armed Forces in a military theme park outside Moscow features a veritable pantheon of the country's top leaders gracing its lush interior alongside God, the Virgin Mary and saints.
Built to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazis, the church also glorifies other "feats of arms of the Russian people" including Moscow's takeover of Crimea, the defence ministry said.
Nearly 100 metres (330 feet) tall and crowned by six golden domes, the cathedral will be Russia's third-largest Orthodox Christian church, a ministry spokesman told AFP.
The centrepiece is a colourful series of mosaics that feature Stalin, Putin and top officials including Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Security Council secretary Nikolai Patrushev.
Those looking forward to a day when science's Grand Unifying Theory of Everything could be worn on a t-shirt may have to wait a little longer as astrophysicists continue to find hints that one of the cosmological constants is not so constant after all.
In a paper published in the prestigious journal Science Advances, scientists from UNSW Sydney reported that four new measurements of light emitted from a quasar 13 billion light years away reaffirm past studies that found tiny variations in the fine structure constant.
UNSW Science's Professor John Webb says the fine structure constant is a measure of electromagnetism - one of the four fundamental forces in nature (the others are gravity, weak nuclear force and strong nuclear force).
"The fine structure constant is the quantity that physicists use as a measure of the strength of the electromagnetic force," Professor Webb says.
"We found a hint that that number of the fine structure constant was different in certain regions of the universe. Not just as a function of time, but actually also in direction in the universe, which is really quite odd if it's correct … but that's what we found."
Scientists have genetically engineered a plant with not just a visible glow, but a self-sustaining glow that lasts for the duration of the plant's life cycle.
It's a breathtaking improvement on previous glowing plants. It's brighter than previous genetically engineered tobacco plants, and it doesn't need to be fed with chemicals to maintain luminescence. Also, the duration of the glow is much longer than glowing plants produced using plant nanobionics.
Of course, we all immediately think of a breathtaking Avatar-style night garden, glittering and gleaming in the darkness, and - further into the future - reducing our dependence on electric lighting.
But glowing greenery could also help us understand the plants themselves - how their metabolism works, and how they respond to the world around them.
The team worked on two species of tobacco plant. And, unlike previous genetically engineered glowing plants, which used bioluminescent bacteria or firefly DNA, these plants were engineered using the DNA of bioluminescent fungi.
