Paul Newman so despised the film in which he made his acting debut that when it was first shown on US television he took out an ad in a Hollywood trade paper apologizing for his performance. What is the title of the film Paul Newman called "the worst motion picture produced during the 1950s"?
The antlions are a group of about 2,000 species of insect in the family Myrmeleontidae, known for the fiercely predatory habits of their larvae, which in many species dig pits to trap passing ants or other prey. The adult insects are less well known, due to their relatively short lifespans compared to the larvae and mostly fly at dusk or after dark, and may be mistakenly identified as dragonflies or damselflies; they are sometimes known as antlion lacewings, and in North America, the larvae are sometimes referred to as doodlebugs because of the strange marks they leave in the sand.
Antlions have a worldwide distribution. The greatest diversity occurs in the tropics, but a few species are found in cold-temperate locations, one such being the European Euroleon nostras. They most commonly occur in dry and sandy habitats where the larvae can easily excavate their pits, but some larvae hide under debris or ambush their prey among leaf litter.

Dave said:
Antlion. Called such because of their ambush predation of ants or any other hapless insect that fall into their death pit. I don't believe I've ever seen one, although they might not be very common in the middle of Michigan with our dense clay based soil. More likely to live in sandy areas in the southwest or maybe the sandy beaches and dunes near the great lakes?
Alan J answered:
Antlions.
Cal in Vermont replied:
Antlions. Antlions eat but do not have a mouth. They pierce their prey with their hollow mandibles and drink their victims dry. They also do not have a butthole and so do not poop. As such, one would think them to be extremely bad-tempered, but apparently are not. Go figure.
Deborah responded:
What I can tell is that doodlebugs are the larvae of a group of insects known as antlions. And that's all I know about that.
Jim from CA, retired to ID, replied:
Antlion
Jacqueline wrote:
The larvae called doodlebugs comes from the antlion. They're ugly beetlelike bugs that feeds on ants. A dowsing rod to find water can be known as a doodlebug.

Antlions are called doodlebugs in North America and myrmex in Greek.

• Soul singer James Brown got his big break after he and his band, the Flames, took the stage without authorization during an intermission in a Little Richard concert in Macon, Georgia, in 1955. They wowed the crowd, and they wowed Little Richard's road manager, who gave them the telephone number of the man who managed most Mason-based R&B acts: Clint Brantley. Sure enough, they showed up to audition for Mr. Brantley that Saturday. Unfortunately, Mr. Brantley was hung over and at first requested that they leave, but he relented enough to let them sing one song. They sang "Looking for My Mother," and Mr. Brantley recalled, "Godd*mn, man, them sons-of-b*tches, they looked for her, too. All under the tables, all under the d*mned seats. Everywhere. When they got through, I said, 'Boys, y'all can sing!'" And, of course, he signed the group.
• Early in her operatic career, Grace Moore sang "Depuis le jour" from Louise at an audition in front of conductor Albert Wolff. After she had finished singing, Mr. Wolff told her, "My dear, you have a beautiful voice, but you don't know what you are singing about. Go out and live and then come back and sing it for me, and I will tell you what career you shall have." Years later, Ms. Moore again sang "Depuis le jour" for Mr. Wolff. This time, he told her, "I don't know what you have done since I spoke to you last, but you have exceeded expectations."

• Joe Moscheo, the pianist for the gospel group The Imperials, met Elvis Presley for the first time at a gospel-music gathering, and of course he asked Mr. Presley for his autograph - he lied and said that the autograph was for his mother, although he actually wanted it for himself. However, he was shocked when Mr. Presley knew who he was. Mr. Presley explained that he studied gospel music extensively and knew much more about gospel than most people thought he knew. Then he said about the autograph, "If you give me yours, I'll give you mine."
• Comedian Bill Hicks was backstage during the intermission of a concert by Ray Charles, where he witnessed a woman trying to get Mr. Charles' autograph although members of Mr. Charles' staff said that he did not sign autographs. Finally, a member of the staff said, "I sign autographs for Mr. Charles." The woman said, "You do! Oh, thank you!" Mr. Hicks said, "Hey, I can get you John Lennon's autograph."

• Rocker Neil Young loves his cars. In 1966, when he was 20 years old, he drove a Pontiac hearse to LA from Toronto, Canada - 2,000 miles. His choice of a hearse was fortuitous, as the roomy back served as his home for months as he sought to establish himself. He even made appointments with other people to meet him at his home - that is, his hearse. After he became a wealthy rocker, Mr. Young continued to buy and drive interesting cars, including a 1951 Chrysler and a 1956 Cadillac - and even a 1950 Buick Roadmaster hearse.
• Tenor Mario del Monaco liked fast cars, and unfortunately in 1963 he had a serious accident in one, smashing his leg, which ended up several inches shorter than his other leg. Before he allowed physicians to work on his leg, he sang a loud high C to make sure that his voice was undamaged.
• In 1981, a 1971 Detomaso Pantera that had been owned by the late Elvis Presley was sold. The automobile was not in brand-new condition because its dashboard was riddled with bullet holes. After the car had refused to start one day, Mr. Presley shot it several times.

Bob Dylan's handwritten lyrics to his 1960s classic "The Times They Are A-Changin'" are going up for sale with a $2.2 million asking price in what could mark a world record for rock lyrics.
Gary Zimet, owner of Los Angeles-based autograph dealers Moments in Time, said on Sunday the one-page sheet of lyrics, written in a notebook and with changes and scribbles, was originally owned by Dylan's current manager, Jeff Rosen, and was now being sold by an anonymous private collector.
Dylan's handwritten lyrics to "Like a Rolling Stone" fetched a world-record $2 million when they were sold at auction by Sotheby's in New York in 2014.
"The Times They Are A-Changin'", written by Dylan in 1963 and released on his 1964 album of the same name, is regarded as one of the most iconic protest songs of the 1960s.
Zimet said he was also selling the lyrics of two other Dylan songs - his 1965 track "Subterranean Homesick Blues" for $1.2 million, and 1969 ballad "Lay Lady Lay" for $650,000.
The Venice Film Festival has confirmed it will go ahead as planned this year, holding its 77th edition Sept. 2-12.
Roberto Cicutto, president of the festival's parent group, the Venice Biennale, told Italian news agency ANSA on Monday that it would not postpone or cancel the 2020 event despite health concerns amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Cicutto said there were currently no plans to collaborate with the Cannes Film Festival on a joint event this year. After twice pushing back the dates for Cannes this year, Cannes Festival director Thierry Fremaux raised the possibility of a one-off collaboration with Venice.
Cicutto said he was confident Italian authorities would grant Venice special permission to open "six or seven circumscribed movie theaters" during the festival for screenings.
The gardens and fountains are looking more lavish than ever, the Italian director of the UNESCO heritage site notes grimly, flourishing in the absence of an endless trudge of tourists.
The Villa d'Este, about an hour's drive from Rome, is a 16th century marvel, a villa and park filled with ponds and manicured gardens first commissioned by a cardinal.
Every day, nearly 2,000 people used to stroll along its paths, marvel at its Renaissance sculptures and take in the views from the terraced hillside.
But it has been closed, along with almost everything else across the tourist-friendly Mediterranean country, since the first half of March because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Tourism is vital to Italy's economic survival, employing just under a fifth of the entire official workforce.
Six foreign tourists who tried to sit out the coronavirus pandemic in an Indian cave have been sent to quarantine at an ashram near a town made famous by the Beatles after running out of money, police said Sunday.
The four men and two women -- from France, the United States, Ukraine, Turkey and Nepal -- had been living in the cave near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand state since March 24, police inspector Rajendra Singh Kathait told AFP.
They have now been moved to Swarg Ashram, where they will be quarantined for 14 days -- although none have shown coronavirus symptoms.
About 700 foreign tourists remain in Rishikesh, according to the state's tourism department, and the government has launched the website "Stranded in India" to help travellers from abroad.
The town was made famous by the Fab Four, who came to Rishikesh in 1968 looking for refuge from Beatlemania, for spiritual enlightenment and to immerse themselves in Indian culture.
It's a rumour that just won't die. When asked whether the COVID-19 virus was genetically engineered in a lab, scientists have already said "no" rather firmly, but the matter of the new coronavirus' origin is unlikely to be put to rest so easily.
Discussions around this subject have become even more pertinent since US government intelligence officials are reportedly investigating the potential source of the pandemic, focussing on theories that it may have originated in a laboratory, despite all evidence pointing to SARS-CoV-2 not being human-made.
"All evidence so far points to the fact the COVID-19 virus is naturally derived and not man-made," explains immunologist Nigel McMillan from the Menzies Health Institute Queensland.
"If you were going to design it in a lab the sequence changes make no sense as all previous evidence would tell you it would make the virus worse. No system exists in the lab to make some of the changes found."
Although it is clear the virus was not created in the lab, there have been ongoing concerns it may have 'escaped' a research facility, with most of the speculation - understandably - focussed on the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). However, it remains just speculation. The Washington Post recently reported that US embassy officials had safety concerns about the lab back in 2018, and the institute did keep a closely related bat virus - but even that's far from a smoking gun.
Protests against state stay-at-home orders have attracted a wide range of fringe activists and ardent Trump supporters. They have also attracted a family of political activists that some Republicans lawmakers have called "scam artists."
A family-run network of pro-gun groups is behind five of the largest Facebook groups dedicated to protesting the shelter-in-place restrictions, according to an NBC News analysis of Facebook groups and website registration information.
The groups were set up by four brothers - Chris, Ben, Aaron and Matthew Dorr - and have amassed more than 200,000 members collectively, including in states where they don't reside, according to an NBC News analysis based on public records searches and Facebook group registrations.
The Dorr brothers are known in conservative circles for running pro-gun and anti-abortion Facebook groups that bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars annually by antagonizing establishment conservative leaders and activists.
Their usual method is to attack established conservative groups from the right, including the National Rifle Association, and then make money by selling memberships in their groups or selling mailing lists of those who sign up, according to some conservative politicians and activists who have labeled those efforts as scams.
Even though air pollution levels have been dropping in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the climate crisis isn't going to go away. In fact, parts of the US and Mexico could be in line for a "megadrought" in the very near future, scientists warn.
Based on an analysis of precipitation levels since the turn of the century, and how they match up with soil moisture levels recorded by tree rings over the last 1,200 years, future modelling suggests the southwestern North American (SWNA) region could see a drought that's worse than any in recorded history.
The conditions we've seen in the SWNA region since 2000 match up with times of severe drought in the past, the researchers say. It's possible that a megadrought has already started, though 2019 precipitation levels did offer some respite.
Reliable weather records only go back to around 1900, but the researchers studied the ring patterns in thousands of trees to calculate soil moisture levels - and therefore rainfall - right back to 800 CE.
They identified four megadroughts that were particularly severe, and the 19 years from 2000-2018 is outdoing three of those droughts in terms of lack of moisture, and is closely tied with the fourth (1575 to 1603).
Calls to US poison centers have risen 20 percent this year because of exposure to bleach and other disinfectants, health authorities said Monday, linking the surge to COVID-19 cleaning recommendations.
From January to March 2020, poison centers received 45,550 calls about dangerous exposure to cleaning chemicals, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report, up from 37,822 the year before.
The number of calls rose sharply in March -- around the time that most state lockdowns went into effect -- with exposures to children under the age of five years accounting for the biggest percentage.
Exposure to bleaches, non-alcoholic disinfectants and hand sanitizers all saw sharp rises, with the main route being inhalation.
