Awful Reviews (Facebook)
"Awful Movie Reviews takes quotes from one-star Amazon reviews of a film and puts them on the movie's poster, to replace the generic review quotes that normally appear. The result can be enlightening, or just plain funny, because they are mostly huge hit movies you've seen. Then on Friday, they switch gears and put quotes from five-star reviews on movie flops." - Neatorama)
David Bruce: Wise Up! (Comedians)
After becoming a famous entertainer, Will Rogers was occasionally seen doing his comedy act by people from back home. One person saw Rogers' act, then he returned home where friends asked him what Will was doing to become so famous. He replied, "Oh, just acting the fool like he used to do around here." A joke that has a big build-up must have a big punch line. Will Rogers once listened to a joke with a big build-up but a small punch line, then said, "That porch is too big for the house."
A hongi is a traditional Maori greeting in New Zealand. It is done by pressing one's nose and forehead (at the same time) to another person at an encounter.
It is used at traditional meetings among Maori people and on major ceremonies and serves a similar purpose to a formal handshake in modern western culture, and indeed a hongi is often used in conjunction with one.
In the hongi, the ha (or breath of life), is exchanged and intermingled. The breath of life can also be interpreted as the sharing of both party's souls.

Lois With The Nose So Bright Of Oregon responded:
Awwww, the Maori have the CUTEST way of saying hello! Much
better than the Western custom of checking for weapons up
the sleeve. However one should make sure nothing is hanging
out of one's nostrils first, and possibly using a veil when
you have a cold would be a thoughtful innovation.

Sorry... (well, no) actually, it's this...
... a very dignified Maori greeting. Which I would much rather have than this:
A traditional Maori warrior challenge before battle... called a "Haka".
It's also done to honor fallen comrades
New Zealand Army with a huge Haka for their deceased brothers-in-arms An' they's some kinda 'Bad-Dudes', I'm tellin' ya. I'd take some "Kiwis" holdin' my flank, any day...

Happy Birthday to all... Alas, no time to elaborate.

Last weekend was the 40th edition of the Long Beach Grand Prix, and I haven't missed a race during that entire time. The first was in 1975, and I was a 22 year old guy fresh out of college wondering what I was going to do with my life. Now I'm 62 and retired and own a house after a good teaching career. It may be silly but that race has always been an important thing to me. In your neck of the woods . . .

I still have a hard time with Bart's passing, it seems like I have lost a friend. Chinaco doesn't quite taste the same.
Thanks for what you do.

Thanks, Ed!
My first LBGP was in the early 80s. Was working for WOLD, and my pal Rich drove their truck with
the dish.
And I sure know what you mean about Bart. Sigh.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is
still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

The Washington Post and The Guardian won the Pulitzer Prize in public service Monday for revealing the U.S. government's sweeping surveillance programs in a blockbuster series of stories based on secret documents supplied by NSA leaker Edward Snowden.
The Pulitzer for breaking news was awarded to The Boston Globe for its "exhaustive and empathetic" coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and the manhunt that followed.
Two of the nation's biggest and most distinguished newspapers, The Post and The New York Times, won two Pulitzers each, while the other awards were scattered among a variety of publications large and small.
The NSA stories were written by Barton Gellman at The Washington Post and Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Ewen MacAskill, whose work was published by The Guardian US, the British newspaper's American operation, based in New York.
The prize for national reporting went to David Philipps of The Gazette of Colorado Springs, Colorado, for an investigation that found that the Army has discharged escalating numbers of traumatized combat veterans who commit crimes at home.

The potty humor of "Captain Underpants" children's books and the mature exploration of race and family violence by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison in "The Bluest Eye" would seem to have little in common.
But among some parents, educators and other members of the general public who worry about what books are stocked at their local libraries, the works fall into the same category - they're just too offensive and should be restricted or removed from the shelves.
The American Library Association published its annual "State of the Libraries" report Sunday, which included its list of works most frequently "challenged" last year at schools and libraries.
Many of the books are cited for the very actions and attitudes they were trying to criticize, whether "The Bluest Eye" for violence or Alexie's novel for racism. It's a long tradition, Jones noted, dating back at least to the accusations of racism made against Mark Twain's satirical "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
"People focus on a word, or a handful of words, and often lift them out of the context of the books," Jones said.
The captain and crew of the futuristic USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) received an awesome letter from actor William Shatner prior to the ship's christening on Saturday.
The ship, which will be the most technologically-advanced destroyer in the Navy when it becomes operational, is commanded by a real-life Capt. James Kirk. And while he's obviously of no relation to the Capt. Kirk played by William Shatner in "Star Trek," many have had fun with that coincidence.
That included Shatner himself, as a photo tweeted by Barbara Zumwalt yesterday showed the framed photo and letter he sent to the sailors who will soon be onboard, which is currently on display at Bath Iron Works in Maine.
"Unfortunately I can't be with you when your vessel is commissioned and obviously your captain, Captain Kirk, is dear to my heart," Shatner wrote. "So forgive me for not attending, my schedule won't allow me, but know that you are in our thoughts - Mr. & Mrs. Shatner - and that we bless you and hope that you have a safe journey wherever your ship takes you."

Michael Isikoff, an investigative reporter best known for his coverage of the President Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal in the late 1990s, has exited NBC News.
He told the Washington Post's Erik Wemple Blog that Friday was his last day with the news division. "I had a good ride at NBC, and I'm glad I did this," he said. "But it's fair to say there was a mutual agreement that this was a situation that was no longer working out."
Isikoff joined NBC News in July 2010 after 16 years at Newsweek. He had been named a contributor at MSNBC a year before.
He told The New York Times that he plans to remain in Washington but would not divulge his plans.
Michael Jackson's mother should pay more than $800,000 in trial costs to a concert promoter that she targeted in a failed negligent hiring lawsuit involving the death of her son, a judge said Monday.
Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos issued the tentative ruling calling on the Jackson family matriarch to pay AEG Live LLC after it won the case.
The five-month trial ended in October with a jury determining that AEG Live did not negligently hire the doctor convicted of causing Michael Jackson's death in 2009 as he prepared for a comeback tour.
The ruling is expected to be finalized after AEG Live submits an amended list of its costs for items such as court filing fees, court reporters and travel. Attorneys for the company and Katherine Jackson agreed not to argue Palazuelos' tentative ruling, but it might be appealed.
Katherine Jackson's attorney Kevin Boyle said a decision on appealing the order would be made after reviewing its final language. The verdict and rulings in the case are currently being appealed.

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson took the stand at Britain's phone hacking trial Monday, saying his affair with fellow executive Rebekah Brooks was wrong but didn't lead him to share work secrets with her.
Coulson, who is on trial alongside Brooks and five others, also denied knowing while he was editor that a private investigator employed by the tabloid had been hacking phones.
Britain's hacking scandal erupted in 2011, when it emerged that the scoop-hungry News of the World had secretly listened to the voicemails people in the public eye. The furor led Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate) to shut down the newspaper and ensnared Britain's police and political establishments.
Coulson, 46, told jurors at London's Central Criminal Court that his on-again, off-again affair with Brooks, which began in 1998 and ended in 2004, "was wrong and it shouldn't have happened."
Coulson later became Prime Minister David Cameron's communications chief but said he had not spoken to Cameron since shortly after leaving that job in early 2011.

The 55-year-old rapper and reality TV star acknowledged Monday in Clark County District Court that he wielded a kitchen knife during an October 2012 argument at home with his longtime girlfriend's 17-year-old son.
A judge sentenced him to probation and four more months of domestic violence counselling.

Fish are losing their survival instinct -- even becoming attracted to the smell of their predators -- as the world's oceans become more acidic because of climate change, new research said on Monday.
The study of fish in coral reefs off the coast of Papua New Guinea -- where the waters are naturally acidic -- showed the animals' behaviour became riskier.
"Fish will normally avoid the smell of a predator, that makes perfect sense," lead author Professor Philip Munday from Australia's James Cook University told AFP.
"But they start to become attracted to the smell of the predator. That's incredible.
Munday said the research, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, was important given that about 30 percent of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere is ultimately absorbed by the ocean, a process which results in the seas becoming more acidic.

Baseball Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson is seeking a settlement of $9.9 million from the Seminole Indian tribe over injuries he suffered in a 2012 fall from a stage at the tribe's South Florida casino.
Attorney Jack Hickey said Monday that Robinson will sue unless a settlement is reached. The case is complicated by the tribe's lawsuit immunity protections, which generally limit damages to $200,000 for an individual who suffers an injury at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
Robinson, 76, was attending a charity event at the casino for the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital when he fell about 12 feet off a stage that had no back railing. Hickey said the Baltimore Orioles great suffered head, back and shoulder injuries that have forced him to undergo physical therapy and required that he limit numerous paid and charity appearances, celebrity golf tournaments, baseball fantasy camps, exercise and travel.
"He has made a good recovery for the injuries he had," Hickey said. "But he's not the same."

A Paris auction house has dropped plans to sell a swastika-covered box that once belonged to Adolf Hitler and dozens of other Nazi-owned objects that were collected as war spoils from World War II, blaming "political pressure."
The Vermot de Pas house on Monday canceled the April 26 sale of some 40 items that French forces seized from Hitler's Bavaria home in the waning days of Nazi Germany in May 1945. Passports of Hermann Goering, an aviator's watch, pictures of Hitler and silverware were among the items that were to go under the block.
"It was not our goal to stir a scandal," said Laudine de Pas, a co-manager of the auction house. "We were pitching this as part of the responsibility to remember - but in no way to shock or create a polemic." She said the auction was called off due to "political pressure" and after the house received "insulting" phone calls and e-mails.
Four people, including former French soldiers or their relatives, had put the objects up for the sale, De Pas said, insisting that none of the items had been used as tools of propaganda. Some sale proceeds were expected to go to an association linked to Auschwitz deportees, according to the auction house's website.
A new graffiti street art piece, suspected of being a Banksy, appeared in, Cheltenham England Monday April 14, 2014. Street artist Banksy may have struck again, leaving an espionage-themed graffiti artwork in the hometown of Britain's electronic spy agency. A stenciled artwork has appeared on a wall in the western England city of Cheltenham, depicting three figures in trench coats and trilbys snooping on a telephone booth. Cheltenham is home to GCHQ, Britain's electronic eavesdropping agency. The secretive organization found itself in the spotlight after some of its covert activities were revealed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The work has not been claimed on Bansky's official website, but has many of the elusive artist's hallmarks, including the stenciled technique and vein of social commentary.

A waterfront estate in Connecticut featuring two private islands and a mile of shorefront has sold for $120 million, making it the most expensive residential home sale in U.S. history, real estate experts said on Monday.
Copper Beech Farm, a 12-bedroom mansion complete with its own clock tower, greenhouse, solarium and swimming pool along Long Island Sound in exclusive Greenwich, Connecticut, had originally been listed at $190 million.
The 50-acre (20 hectare) estate was purchased last week by The Conservation Institute LLC, according to sale records.
Its $120 million selling price was nearly double the previous most expensive home sale in the U.S., the 2013 purchase of an estate in the Hamptons, on Long Island, New York, for $62.5 million, according to RealtyTrac, a real estate information company.
