The award-winning comedian Alan Carr likes to shock on his Friday night TV show but he is happy to be labelled Middle England. He talks to Elizabeth Day about growing up with a tough, footballing dad, his dislike for near-the-knuckle stand-up and why 'gays hate him.'

What's more significant: the inauguration of a new U.S. president or the announcement of the year's Oscar nominees? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided politics takes precedence, announcing Monday that it has delayed the nominations announcement by two days.
Oscar nominees are usually revealed on a Tuesday about four weeks before the big show, which is typically held the last Sunday in February. For 2009, though, the targeted Tuesday - Jan. 20 - is Inauguration Day.
So the 81st annual Oscar nominees will be revealed Thursday, Jan. 22, and the Academy Awards will be presented Sunday, Feb. 22 - the earliest Oscars ever.
The academy's board of governors decided in 2004 to move the Oscar show from late March to late February to combat "awards fatigue" and "to maintain a higher level of interest and excitement," Robertson said.
Rock star and astrophysics expert Brian May took up his post as a university chancellor on Monday, warning that science funding cuts risked damaging Britain's position on the world stage.
The Queen guitarist, who last year completed a long-abandoned doctoral thesis on interplanetary dust, said he was "very proud" to become the chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in northwest England.
The 60-year-old star, who dropped his studies in the 1970s as Queen took off, told the 500-strong congregation as he accepted the largely honorary post that science was woefully underfunded in Britain.
"It is very sad that the cuts have been so sweeping. It is a real shame. I think everyone is going through a horrific time in science in this country. It is a rather sorry state of affairs," he said.
J.K. Rowling testified before a packed courtroom in a lawsuit to block publication of a Harry Potter lexicon, telling a judge that the book amounts to a "wholesale theft" of nearly 20 years of her hard work. "We all know I've made enough money. That's absolutely not why I'm here," Rowling told the judge in U.S. District Court.
The British author sued Michigan-based RDR Books last year to stop publication of Steven Vander Ark's "Harry Potter Lexicon," claiming copyright infringement. Vander Ark runs the popular Harry Potter Lexicon Web site, and RDR wants to publish a print version of the site and charge $24.95.
Rowling claims the book is nothing more than a rearrangement of her own material and told the judge it copied so much of her work that it amounted to plagiarism.
She also said she has recently started work on her own encyclopedia but does not expect to complete it for two to three years because she wants to do it right.
A 15-minute film of Marilyn Monroe engaging in oral sex with an unidentified man will be kept from public view by a New York businessman who has bought it for $1.5 million, the broker of the deal said on Monday.
Memorabilia collector Keya Morgan said he recently arranged the sale of the silent, black-and-white film from the son of a dead FBI informant who possessed it to a wealthy Manhattan businessman who wants to protect Monroe's privacy.
"The gentleman who bought it said out respect for Marilyn he's not going to make a joke of it and put it on the Internet and try to exploit her," said memorabilia collector Keya Morgan. "That's not his intention and I would never get my name involved if that were to happen."
Monroe is clothed and the man's head remains out of the frame for the entire 15 minutes of the film, said Morgan, who watched it.

Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton have two other sons: Dashiell, 6, and Roman, 3.
Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has tentatively settled a lawsuit against the Rockstar energy drink company over the use of his picture to promote the product.
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed in court papers filed Friday in Superior Court.
Barker's lawsuit claimed invasion of privacy, unfair competition and misappropriating his likeness to promote the product.
The lawsuit said the Rockstar Web site published a photo of the 32-year-old Barker "holding a can of one of Rockstar's beverages, and identifying him and his endorsement by name" without his consent.

Time Warner Inc will cut 450 jobs from New Line Cinema in a highly anticipated move following an earlier decision to fold the movie studio under the wing of Warner Bros Entertainment.
About 40 of New Line's employees will be offered new jobs at Warner Bros in positions that will not displace existing Warner Bros jobs, a Time Warner spokesman said.
About 40 to 50 existing New Line employees will remain at the division renowned for its blockbuster hit franchises, including the "Lord of the Rings" series.
The prospects are looking dim for the proposal to limit which Screen Actors Guild members can vote in upcoming contract talks.
SAG's board of directors on Saturday referred the matter to committee rather than immediately act on it, as more than 1,400 guild members demanded in a petition. It sought to restrict voting to actors who work at least one day a year.
The proposal ran into strong opposition from board members who argued it would exclude most guild members.
The majority of SAG's 120,000 members don't work regularly. Supporters of the proposal reason that nonworking members would be more likely to favor a walkout.

Four people from a Seattle-based film crew and a Nigerian man accompanying them have been detained for illegally traveling by boat in restive southern Nigeria, officials said.
Security forces fighting militants in the Niger Delta consider much of the vast wetland region a military zone and have barred outsiders from traveling there without express consent by authorities.
Nigerian Brig. Gen. Wuyep Rintip said the group was seized Saturday for flouting the ban and were to be flown to the capital, Abuja. He did not identify the detainees. A US Embassy spokesman had no immediate comment on Monday.
According to a news release issue issued Sunday in Seattle, the Americans were Sandi Cioffi, director of the documentary "Sweet Crude;" Tammi Sims, Cliff Worsham and Sean Porter, also part of the crew, and Joel Bisina, a peace mediator and founder of Niger Delta Professionals for Development in Warri.
Richard Gere, like Martha Stewart before him, is running into some zoning hurdles as he tries to put his imprint on the wealthy New York suburb of Bedford.
The 58-year-old actor and a partner have opened a cafe and bakery and have plans for a luxury inn and fine restaurant. But their new 180-foot-long cedar fence may not pass muster, building inspector Richard Megna said Monday.
Bedford's rules call for a fence no higher than 4 feet along the street side of a property, he said, and Gere's is 5 feet tall.

As a child-abuse investigation continues at a polygamous compound in Texas, NBC News has learned who helped fund the controversial sect.
It was the U.S. Department of Defense.
Freedom of Information Act documents obtained by NBC News show that the Pentagon awarded contracts of at least $1.5 million to two Utah-based companies owned and operated by senior officials of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or FLDS. The contracts, issued from 1998 to 2006, were for aircraft parts and other military equipment.
So how could federal funds have ended up aiding the FLDS church? According to an affidavit filed by Wendell Nielsen's son in a church-related court case, Western Precision gave the church up to $100,000 a month, a testament to the close ties between the manufacturing firm and the church itself.
A retired shipping consultant said he lost an expensive 17th-century violin after forgetting it on a train. Rob Napier said he did not realize the instrument, made by master Venetian craftsman Matteo Goffriller in 1698, was still on the train's luggage rack until it began pulling out of the station.
Napier said he was on his way home to Bedwyn, some 70 miles (115 kilometers) west of London, on Jan. 29 after retrieving the violin from an expert who had valued it at about 200,000 pounds (US$390,000; euro245,000). Napier called the train company, but by the time the train reached its final destination, the instrument was gone.
Napier said the violin belonged to his mother, who died in 2006. A professional violinist, she bought the Goffriller from a dealer in 1945. She said later she had wanted a fine instrument to match the quality of those played by her colleagues in the well-known Ebsworth String Quartet, an all-female group, Napier said.
A reward of up to 10,000 pounds (about US$20,000 euro12,000) was being offered for the instrument's recovery, he said.
