Andrew Tobias: Health-Care Sign-ups
Following up on the Fox News chart that showed 6 million sign-ups as falling roughly two-thirds short of goal, esteemed reader Dennis King sends along what he calls this "Updated Chart from Faux News" (actually, he just dummied it up himself):…
Robin Warder: 5 Real People Who Were Mistakenly Declared Dead (Cracked)
The scenario is frequently played for laughs in sitcoms and movies …. You'd think that proving your own status as a living person would be a quick matter of showing up at the records building and not biting anybody in the brain. But no, it seems like trying to convince the world that you're still alive is almost worse than just rolling over, taking one for the team, and politely dying.

"Babies have an almost universally similar reaction to their first taste of a lemon. They are eager to try something new, they take a bite, and then it's shock, puckering, frowning, astonishment at your betrayal of their trust, maybe a little spitting, and then after a moment, they want another bite!" - Neatorama
'Uncle Martin' (Ray Walston in 'My Favorite Martian')
Source
My Favorite Martian is an American television sitcom that aired on CBS from September 29, 1963, to May 1, 1966, for 107 episodes (75 in black and white 1963-1965, 32 color 1965-1966). The show starred Ray Walston as Uncle Martin (the Martian) and Bill Bixby as Tim O'Hara.
"Martin O'Hara's" real name is Exigius 12½. Revealed in "We Love You, Mrs. Pringle," it was heard again when his real nephew, Andromeda, crash-landed on Earth in the show's third season. Andromeda, originally devised to bring younger viewers to the aging show, disappeared without explanation after this single episode and was never referred to again. Andromeda was, however, a regular on the later animated series My Favorite Martians.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is

Pioneering American TV journalist Barbara Walters, who was the first woman to co-anchor an evening news program, will make her final television appearance on the morning talk show "The View" next month, the network ABC said on Monday.
Walters' last day as a co-host on the all-women talk show she created in 1997 will be on May 16. The network, a unit of Walt Disney Co., will also air a two-hour evening special focusing on her career and her life on the same day.
In honor of her many years on television, the ABC News headquarters in New York will be named for her in a dedication ceremony this spring and "The View" will host a week-long celebration of her career.
The most pirated series on TV is showing no signs of losing that dubious distinction.
The fourth-season premiere HBO's "Game of Thrones" Sunday became an instant hit on file-sharing networks worldwide, exceeding first-day piracy levels achieved by its third-season premiere well before its first 24 hours on the Internet. By all accounts, "Thrones" is peerless among TV shows in its ability to drive peer-to-peer copyright infringement.
Piracy-tracking firm Excipio detected 1.17 million unique IP addresses accessing torrents of the season premiere within the first 15 hours of the episode popping up online. That's more than "Thrones" racked up in the first 24 hours following its April 1 release of the third season last year, which reached 1.15 million.
While the prospect of mass freeloading on its hit series might seem worrisome to HBO, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes has professed to not be concerned by the piracy, citing its promotional value. "Thrones" has also spurred some other digital issues, with the fourth season premiere causing HBO Go to crash Sunday.
Ten world-class soloists put costly Stradivarius violins and new, cheaper ones to a blind scientific test. The results may seem off-key to musicians and collectors, but the new instruments won handily.
When the lights were dimmed and the musicians donned dark glasses, the soloists' top choice out of a dozen old and new violins tested was by far a new one. So was the second choice, according to a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Of the six old violins tested, five were by made by the famous Stradivari family in the 17th and 18th centuries. The newer violins were about 100 times cheaper, said study co-author Joseph Curtin, a Michigan violin maker. But the Strads and other older Italian violins have long been considered superior, even almost magical.
And when the soloists were asked to guess whether the violins they were playing were old or new, the soloists got it wrong 33 times and right 31 times.

A Fabergé Imperial Easter Egg made for Emperor Alexander III of Russia and not seen in public for more than a century will go on show in London after being saved from the melting pot by an American scrap dealer who only accidentally realized its value.
The Lost Third Imperial Easter Egg was made by Peter Carl Fabergé as a gift for Empress Maria Feodorovna for Easter 1887.
The 8.2 cm (3.2 inches) tall egg, made from gold and studded with diamonds and sapphires, was last displayed in St Petersburg in 1902.
It was seized by the Bolsheviks during the 1917 Russian Revolution and mysteriously made its way to the United States.
By chance, an unidentified man bought it at a market in the U.S. Midwest for $14,000, intending to sell it for scrap. Unable to find a buyer, he searched the Internet and realized that he may have found Empress Maria Feodorovna's lost Easter egg.
Singer Chris Brown's assault case is going forward after a judge in Washington on Monday rejected a request to dismiss it.
Lawyers for the Grammy-winning singer had argued the case should be dismissed because prosecutors abused the grand jury process to prepare for trial. Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, said prosecutors used the grand jury to "freeze" the testimony of the alleged victim in the case, a man who says Brown and his bodyguard punched him outside a Washington hotel in October.
Geragos called the incident "the most investigated misdemeanour of all time."
But Judge Patricia Wynn agreed with prosecutors that they had a right to use the grand jury to assess the strength of their case.
Wynn also on Monday ordered that Brown and his bodyguard be tried separately. Brown's bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, will start his trial April 17. Brown's trial will begin after Hollosy's ends. Both cases will be decided by a judge, not a jury.

A married Republican U.S. representative apologized on Monday after a Louisiana newspaper posted a surveillance video showing a man it identified as the congressman kissing a woman from his office staff.
Vance, who took office last November in a special election that he won partly by touting his Christian values, made the statement after the Ouachita Citizen in West Monroe, Louisiana, posted the video on its website.
It shows a man the paper identified as Vance walking into the frame and turning out the lights in front of an office doorway. The camera shifts into a grainy, low-light mode before a woman enters the frame. The two embrace and kiss passionately for about 30 seconds before leaving together, picked up by other security cameras in the building.
The paper said the woman was a married member of McAllister's staff.

The heir of a Nazi-era art dealer said Monday he had struck an accord with the German government setting a one-year deadline on provenance research for his vast hoard of paintings.
The agreement more than two years after their shock discovery in a customs probe means that Cornelius Gurlitt, 81, will likely get back many of the hundreds of artworks that were seized by German authorities.
But the deal with the federal and Bavarian state governments will also speed up the search for rightful owners of the works, many of which are believed to have been looted from Jewish collectors under Adolf Hitler.
Gurlitt had stashed around 1,400 artworks in his Munich apartment including long-lost paintings by Picasso, Matisse and Chagall.
Despite a late-season boost from the cold weather patterns similar to those that blasted England with terrific storms in February, Arctic sea ice is still on a long-term decline, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
The Arctic ice cap expands every winter and shrinks every summer, in response to changing temperatures, sunlight and weather conditions. The sea ice hit its annual peak on March 21, covering 5.76 million square miles (14.91 million square kilometers), the NSIDC reported last week. That's the fifth-lowest maximum extent since satellite record keeping started in 1979.
But until mid-March, researchers monitoring the icy blanket's annual growth thought the sea ice would be even smaller this year.
This winter, the Arctic ice cover was hovering significantly below long-term averages through the beginning of March, the NSIDC said. But ice pack surged toward the Barents Sea north of Norway and the Bering Sea between Alaska and Russia in mid-March, driven by strong winds. The surface winds were kicked up by an low-pressure weather system in the eastern Arctic and North Atlantic associated with a positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation, the NSIDC said. The Arctic Oscillation is an atmospheric circulation pattern over the northern polar region that affects the jet stream. It causes stormy conditions over the North Atlantic when it is in a positive, low-pressure phase.

The east coast of North America was once as wild as the West, with massive mountains rising between colliding tectonic plates, volcanoes belching lava and giant faults slicing the crust.
That's because millions of years ago, eastern North America was part of Gondwana and Pangaea, the supercontinents that formed as Earth's tectonic plates collided, split apart, and then crashed together again before rifting and drifting toward the spots where they're located today. Though North America's east coast is relatively quiet now, clues to these ancient tectonic mash-ups remain buried deep underground.
A new look at one of these clues reveals that a weird magnetic signal near Florida shows the peninsula stuck to North America's heel like a piece of old tape about 300 million years ago, when the central and southern Appalachian mountains were built.
The rocks beneath Florida suggest the peninsula originally wasn't part of North America. Rather, it's a fragment of either Africa or South America, sutured onto the southeastern United States near an unusual feature called the Brunswick Magnetic Anomaly, researchers say.
The Brunswick Magnetic Anomaly is a geological feature that snakes from Alabama across Georgia, and offshore to North Carolina's Outer Banks. Anomalies in Earth's magnetic field are caused by structures such as faults, and by the varying magnetic intensities of different rock types. These slight differences in rock magnetism can be measured and mapped to find hidden geologic structures.
Peaches Geldof, the wild-child second daughter of concert organizer Bob Geldof who filled the pages of British tabloids with her late-night antics as she flirted through the fashion and celebrity world, was found dead Monday at age 25.
There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England but police called it "unexplained and sudden."
The news came as a shock to Britain's entertainment and fashion circles, where Peaches had been active as a model, television presenter and fashion writer. She was a frequent attendee at fashion shows and was photographed just last week at a London show for the Tesco brand F&F.
Peaches was only a girl of 11 when her mother Paula Yates died of a drug overdose in 2000 and those who knew her said it hit her extremely hard.
The last tweet Peaches sent on Twitter came on Sunday, when she posted a photograph of herself as a toddler with her mother and the caption: "Me and my mum."
Peaches was married twice and leaves behind two sons, 23-month-old Astala and Phaedra, 11 months.
Her first marriage, at age 19 to Max Drummey, a vocalist with U.S. indie rock band Chester French, began at a drive-through chapel in Las Vegas. It lasted six months and ended in 2009.
Her second marriage was to Tom Cohen, lead singer of the defunct London punk band S.C.U.M
