The 'Ban the Bomb' Edition
Barack Obama yesterday announced a radical drive aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons, as the focus of his European visit switched from financial to geopolitical security. "In Prague, I will lay out an agenda to seek the goal of a world without nuclear weapons," Obama said yesterday... "The spread of nuclear weapons or the theft of nuclear material could lead to the extermination of any city on the planet," he warned, adding that suspected rogue nuclear states, such as North Korea or Iran, may only be persuaded to abandon their quests if the big nuclear powers set an example...

Froma Harrop: Centrist Dems: Dogged If They Do, Dogged If They Don't (creators.com)
There's trouble around the Democratic campfire. The party has the White House and solid congressional majorities. But what it doesn't have is everyone on the same page, strumming the same chords, singing the same tune. Liberals who kept the fires burning during the long Republican reign now fear that moderate Blue Dog Democrats will thwart their much-delayed dreams.

Why is crime down in Los Angeles? Violent crime is down by about 5 percent from last year at this time, which was down from the year before. Unemployment is at 12 percent. If you follow the theories of most fancy criminologists, larger social forces, like the economy and demographics, determine crime rates.

Schindler's List
Australian researchers sifting papers belonging to the author of "Schindler's List" discovered a yellowing roll of 801 men saved from the Holocaust by the German industrialist - the very copy the writer used to bring the story to the world's attention, a curator said Monday.
The 13-page document is a copy of one of Oskar Schindler's famed compilations of names that eventually included 1,100 men and women he saved by employing them in his factories in World War II Germany.
"It's the list Tom used when writing `Schindler's Ark' and that really brought Schindler's actions to the attention of the world," said State Library of New South Wales co-curator Olwen Pryke, referring to the book's author, Thomas Keneally.
Keneally wrote the book "Schindler's Ark," also published as "Schindler's List," which was made into the Oscar-winning film by Steven Spielberg in 1993.

Attending amfAR Cannes
Bill Clinton
Former President Bill Clinton will address the annual amfAR charity gala that raises money for AIDS research during the Cannes film festival on France's southern coast.
The event on May 21, to be hosted by actress Sharon Stone and movie producer Harvey Weinstein, will include the traditional auction where celebrities offer unusual rewards for anyone willing to pay up.
Scottish singer Annie Lennox will perform at the event, to be held for the first time at the exclusive Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, near Cannes.
The foundation's annual "Cinema Against AIDS" galas have been held since 1993 and generated nearly $44 million for research into AIDS and HIV prevention.

Reimburses Gouged Fan
Charley Pride
Country music legend Charley Pride reimbursed a Canadian fan gouged 1,200 dollars by a US ticket reseller, as watchdogs probe alleged "scalping" by Ticketmaster and others, media said Monday.
The Grammy Award winner reportedly made a special trip last week to western Canada to repay the fan out of his own pocket and offer her two free tickets to his upcoming show in Edmonton, Alberta.
The original tickets were said to be valued at 133 dollars, but had been inflated by an online ticket reseller based in the United States.
California-based Ticketmaster, the dominant ticket seller for concerts and sporting events in North America, said on Friday it received "a number of subpoenas and demands for sworn information" from US and Canadian authorities.

Former Seaside Home For Sale
Charles Dickens
The former seaside home of British writer Charles Dickens, where he wrote part of the novel "David Copperfield", has gone on sale for two million pounds, an estate agent said Monday.
The cliffside house in Broadstairs, in the southern English county of Kent, was built in 1801 and has six bedrooms, and is on the market for 2.2 million euros, or three million dollars.
It was built as the residence of the fort captain during the Napoleonic Wars and originally named "Fort House", the estate agent said, but this was later changed to "Bleak House" -- the name of one of Dickens' most famous novel.
He is thought to have planned that novel at the house, and is also said to have written parts of "David Copperfield" in its study overlooking the sea.

Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty Monday to threatening and assaulting his girlfriend, fellow music superstar Rihanna.
The 19-year-old R&B singer appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom alongside his lawyer, Mark Geragos.
Brown entered his plea, speaking in a soft voice, while his mother sat in the first row, red-eyed.
Brown left the courthouse with his mother, two bodyguards and an entourage. On his way out, he had to walk through a phalanx of cameras. He was picked up by a car in front of the courthouse.

Denies Copying 'Viva La Vida'
Coldplay
Coldplay has denied in federal court that it copied parts of Joe Satriani's music for its hit song, "Viva La Vida."
In a response filed in Los Angeles on Monday, attorneys for Coldplay's band members also argued that any similarities between "Viva La Vida" and Satriani's "If I Could Fly" weren't enough to warrant damages.
Satriani's song "lacks originality," Coldplay's response claims, and shouldn't receive copyright protection.
Satriani sued Coldplay in December, claiming the British band used "substantial, original portions" of Satriani's "If I Could Fly," which was released in 2004.

New Charges
Redmond O'Neal
The son of actor Ryan O'Neal and cancer-stricken actress Farrah Fawcett was behind bars on Monday on new drugs charges, Los Angeles authorities confirmed.
Redmond O'Neal, 24, was being held in jail ahead of a hearing on Tuesday after being arrested at the weekend while taking a friend to visit an inmate at a jail in Castaic, northwest of Los Angeles, officials said.
O'Neal, who is already facing drug possession charges relating to an incident in September last year, allegedly admitted carrying drugs during a routine security stop on Sunday, police said.
Authorities did not say what kind of drugs were found.

Panties In A Knot
Toby Keith
Ethan Hawke might want to avoid crossing paths with Toby Keith in the near future.
The country star lit into the actor for an article Hawke wrote in the new issue of Rolling Stone about Kris Kristofferson. In it, Hawke refers to a blowup Kristofferson had with an unnamed country star back in 2003 that sounds a lot like Toby Keith.
In the story, Hawke claimed he witnessed the confrontation backstage at Nelson's tribute concert for his 70th birthday at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The article does not name Keith but says it was a country singer who "had a monster hit about bombing America's enemies back into the stone age." In 2002, Keith had the song "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)" that threatened retribution for the 9/11 attacks.
Hawke said the argument began with the "Star" telling Kristofferson: "None of that lefty (expletive) out there tonight, Kris."
Hawke said Kristofferson then angrily confronted and asked him if he had ever served in the military.

Republican Family Values
Nevada Governor
First lady Dawn Gibbons accuses Gov. Jim Gibbons in divorce papers of having extramarital affairs with a former Playboy magazine model and another woman to whom he sent hundreds of text messages last year. The Republican governor has been untruthful about his "infidelity" with the two women, his estranged wife says in a divorce filing which was unsealed Monday by a court order in Washoe County Family Court.
The governor has insisted both women were just friends. He filed for divorce last May, citing "incompatibility" with his wife.
Dawn Gibbons identified one of the women in the documents as Kathy Karrasch, who over several weeks received more than 860 text messages from the governor on his state cell phone.
The documents identified the second woman as Leslie Durant, who once posed in Playboy magazine and is the former wife of ex-Reno Mayor Pete Sferrazza.

Thinnest Ever
Arctic Sea Ice
The Arctic is treading on thinner ice than ever before. Researchers say that as spring begins, more than 90 percent of the sea ice in the Arctic is only 1 or 2 years old. That makes it thinner and more vulnerable than at anytime in the past three decades, according to researchers with NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado.
Young sea ice in the Arctic often melts in the spring and summer. If it survives for two years, then it becomes the type of thick sea ice that is key. But the past two years were warm, and there's more young, thin ice at the top of the world.
In normal winters, thick sea ice - often about 10 feet thick or more - extends from the northern boundaries of Greenland and Canada almost to Russia. This year, the thick ice cap barely penetrates the bull's-eye of the Arctic Circle.
The amount of thick sea ice hit a record wintertime low of just 378,000 square miles this year, down 43 percent from last year, Meier said. The amount of older sea ice that was lost is larger than the state of Texas.

Survivor Dog
Sophie Tucker
A pet dog that fell overboard in rough seas off Australia has been reunited with its owners after surviving alone on an island for four months, reports said.
Sophie Tucker, apparently named after a late US entertainer, fell overboard as Jan Griffith and her family sailed through choppy waters off the northeast Queensland coast in November.
But out of sight of the family, Sophie Tucker was swimming doggedly and finally made it to St Bees Island, five nautical miles away, and began the sort of life popularised by the TV reality show "Survivor."
She was returned to her family last week when Griffith contacted rangers who had captured a dog that had been living off feral goats on the largely uninhabited island, in the faint hope it might be their long-lost pet.
