A recent study has found that older men treated for cancer do as well or even better in a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hospital than men covered by Medicare. Researchers said this may be a result of massive changes in the organization of the VHA that started in the mid-1990s, which made patient care more coordinated, strengthened preventive care and allowed medical mistakes to be spotted faster. An abstract of the study is available on the Journal of Clinical Oncology website .
Paul Krugman: Lobbyists, Guns and Money (New York Times)
Florida's now-infamous Stand Your Ground law, which lets you shoot someone you consider threatening without facing arrest, let alone prosecution, sounds crazy - and it is. And it's tempting to dismiss this law as the work of ignorant yahoos. But similar laws have been pushed across the nation, not by ignorant yahoos but by big corporations.
Adam Ruben: How to Write Like a Scientist
Using the first person in your writing humanizes your work. If possible, therefore, you should avoid using the first person in your writing. Science succeeds in spite of human beings, not because of us, so you want to make it look like your results magically discovered themselves.
Roger Ebert: The Kid with a Bike (Unrated; 3 ½ stars)
The fierce young boy is always in motion, his face screwed up in determination, pedaling his bike, running through the streets, pounding on doors and windows, demanding, demanding.
Roger Ebert: Vengeance is Mine (A Great Movie)
The title "Vengeance Is Mine" poses an implied question that is never answered: Vengeance for what? This portrait of a cold-blooded serial killer suggests a cruel force without motivation, inspiration, grievance.
Roger Ebert's Japanese Film Reviews (FilmJapan)
Roger Ebert's collection of reviews includes a large amount of foreign films, many of which are Japanese. He lists Ozu Yasujiro as one of his favorite directors, so his films are well-represented, but he seems to also have a penchant for Koreeda Hirokazu, Miyazaki Hayao, Kurosawa Akira, and other Japanese greats such as Mizoguchi and Imamura.
Peter Singer: Weigh More, Pay More (Project Syndicate)
I am writing this at an airport. A slight Asian woman has checked in with, I would guess, about 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of suitcases and boxes. She pays extra for exceeding the weight allowance. A man who must weigh at least 40 kilos more than she does, but whose baggage is under the limit, pays nothing. Yet, in terms of the airplane's fuel consumption, it is all the same whether the extra weight is baggage or body fat.
Colin Dickey: Living in the Margins (Roundtable)
Marginal illustrations could be profane and bizarre: one manuscript of the romance of Lancelot shows a nun breastfeeding a monkey; another marginal image in the 'Rutland Psalter' features a demon of some sort firing an arrow into the ass of a merman.

Joni Mitchell, CC (born Roberta Joan Anderson; November 7, 1943) is a Canadian musician, singer songwriter, and painter. Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in Saskatchewan and Western Canada and then busking in the streets and dives of Toronto. In 1965 she moved to the United States and, touring constantly, began to be recognized when her original songs ("Urge for Going," "Chelsea Morning," "Both Sides, Now," "The Circle Game") were covered by notable folk singers, allowing her to sign with Reprise Records and record her own debut album in 1968.[Settling in Southern California, Mitchell and her popular songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock" helped define an era and a generation.
A blunt critic of the music industry, Mitchell quit touring and released her 17th, and reportedly last, album of original songs in 2007. Now based in British Columbia, she describes herself as a "painter derailed by circumstance."

The incomparable songwriter/singer/musician (and painter) Joni Mitchell...
I am a huge fan... and have been since '68. Many artists have covered her songs from Judy Collins' "Both Sides Now" to Annie Lennox "Ladies of the Canyon" to C,S,N &Y's "Woodstock" and Nazareth's, "This Flight Tonight". There are many other examples. She's influenced a great many more and they have paid tribute to her by borrowing lyrics and references of her songs as well as her guitar tunings (over 50). Prince is a huge fan of hers and numerous songs of his used her musical and lyrical techniques. Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" is reputed to be about Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's infatuation with her. "To find a queen without a king, they say she plays guitar and cries and sings". Graham Nash's "Our House" was about their relationship. Finally, even Madonna (the anti-Joni) gushed "I was really, really into Joni Mitchell. I knew every word to Court and Spark ; I worshipped her when I was in high school. Blue is amazing. I would have to say of all the women I've heard, she had the most profound effect on me from a lyrical point of view."
I couldn't agree more except to add that I believe there isn't a woman alive that has influenced the music industry more than she has in one way or another.
Joni, I could drink a case of you...

Joni Mitchell. Joni Mitchell is ok, but I much prefer Joan Baez and Buffy Ste Marie. This is River, the only song of hers I really like.

The Weinstein Co. is moving past the R rating earned by its documentary "Bully" and plans to release the film unrated.
The company announced Monday that "Bully" will hit theaters March 30 without a rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. That means some theaters may choose not to show it.
The MPAA gave the film an R rating for language and declined to change it when the Weinstein Co. appealed. That inspired teen activist Katy Butler to start an online petition seeking a lower rating so more young people could see the movie.
She has collected more than 475,000 signatures so far and even met with MPAA officials earlier this month, but the group stood its ground and "Bully" remained rated R, which requires children under 17 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian

ABC also announced that director and producer Don Mischer will executive produce the Emmy telecast. Mischer recently directed and produced the Academy Awards. This is his 12th time at the helm of the Emmys.
Julie Otsuka's "The Buddha in the Attic," a brief, poetic novel about young Japanese women who emigrate to the U.S. and marry men they have never met, has won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
The PEN/Faulkner Foundation announced Monday that Otsuka will receive $15,000 for the prize, which has been given in previous years to Philip Roth and John Updike among others. Her novel was a finalist last fall for the National Book Award.
Faulkner finalists included novels by Anita Desai and Russell Banks and short story collections by Don DeLillo and Steven Millhauser.

Reality television star Jack Osbourne, son of rocker Ozzy Osbourne and "America's Got Talent" judge Sharon Osbourne, was recovering on Monday after having his appendix removed over the weekend.
Osbourne, 26, posted a picture of himself in a hospital gown with his fiance on Sunday, with the caption "This is what you look like when you have has your appendix removed."
The reality star remained hospitalized on Monday after his appendectomy and jokingly tweeted "Man, high powered pain killers + radiohead = dangerous territory for me. I gotta get outta this hospital. This is getting to good."
Osbourne, who has been in rehab for drug abuse in the past, cleaned up his act in recent years and is currently expecting his first child with fiance Lisa Stelly.
An unemployed Florida man faces up to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to hacking into the email accounts of such celebrities as Christina Aguilera, Mila Kunis and Scarlett Johansson, whose nude photos eventually landed on the Internet.
Christopher Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, Fla., entered his plea in federal court to nine counts, including unauthorized access to a computer and wiretapping. He was immediately taken into custody with his head hung low and his hands in his pocket.
Chaney was arrested in October as part of a yearlong investigation of celebrity hacking that authorities dubbed "Operation Hackerazzi."
Prosecutors said Chaney illegally accessed the email accounts of more than 50 people in the entertainment industry between November 2010 and October 2011.
In ordering Chaney to be behind bars until he's sentenced, U.S. District Judge S. James Otero noted the defendant continued to hack into celebrity email accounts - namely one belonging to a star only referenced by initials C.B. - after he was interviewed by FBI agents and confessed to his scheme.

Philadelphia police violated a college student's First Amendment rights by arresting him as he took photos of a traffic stop outside his house, a journalism advocacy group said Monday.
Temple University photojournalism student Ian Van Kuyk has been charged with obstruction, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in a case described as "a miscarriage of justice" by a lawyer for the National Press Photographers Association.
"He was just taking pictures, as is his right, (as is) every citizen's right," attorney Mickey Osterreicher said Monday.
Van Kuyk was sitting on his front steps in the city's Point Breeze section when police pulled over a vehicle. The student began taking pictures to fulfill a course assignment for shooting at night. He was not using a flash and obeyed one police command to move back, Osterreicher said.
But officers then asked Van Kuyk to stop taking photos. When the student asserted his right to use the camera on public street, one officer reportedly said: "Public domain, yeah we've heard that before!" Police allegedly pushed, shoved and threw Van Kuyk to the ground before handcuffing him.
Officials in Southern California say Bobby Brown has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Harris says Brown was arrested around 12:20 p.m. Monday in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles. He failed a field sobriety test and was booked on suspicion of DUI.
Harris says the R&B singer was pulled over after an officer saw him talking on his cellphone without a hands-free unit and noticed he appeared to be impaired.
Los Angeles police say Brown was released from jail on his own recognizance shortly before 2 p.m.

U.S. regulators are pressuring Internet companies to put in place by the end of the year a "Do Not Track" system that would give consumers more control over their personal data online, in a report released on Monday that privacy advocates dismissed as too soft.
The Federal Trade Commission's long-awaited 57-page final report on privacy recommendations relies heavily on industry voluntarily adopting best practices.
It also called on Congress to pass broad privacy legislation that would bring transparency to how consumers' online data is collected, used and sold, and give consumers the ability to stop such practices.
The report is in response to growing consumer concern about how Internet giants such as Google, Facebook and Twitter collect and trade in vast amounts of detailed information about their users' online activities and real-life identities.
The FTC does not have the authority to write (privacy?) rules, and is instead leaning on Internet companies to adopt tougher internal privacy policies. The FTC does have the power to punish companies that violate their own policies or otherwise engage in deceptive practices.
Rick Santorum has been working to soften his image in recent days, allowing reporters to follow him on bowling and shuffleboard excursions as he campaigned in Wisconsin over the weekend.
But a heated exchange with a New York Times reporter after a speech Sunday night in which Santorum loudly cursed is giving Mitt Romney's campaign new ammunition as it seeks to define the former Pennsylvania senator as a hothead.
During a campaign appearance in Racine, Wis., Sunday, Santorum urged attendees to carefully judge Romney's record, on a series of issues including health care.
But asked to expand on his comment by Times reporter Jeff Zeleny after the event, Santorum quickly lost his cool. "What speech did you listen to? Stop lying!" Santorum snapped at Zeleny. "I said he was the worst Republican to run on the issue of Obamacare. That's what I was talking about."
The incident, which was captured on video by CBS News , shows Santorum angrily accusing Zeleny of twisting his words. "Quit distorting my words. If I see it, it's bullshit," Santorum said, wagging his finger at Zeleny.
