Paul Krugman: Dwindling Deficit Disorder (New York Times)
The deficit is indeed dwindling, and the case for making the deficit a central policy concern, which was never very strong given low borrowing costs and high unemployment, has now completely vanished.

Fawcett Publications was an American publishing company founded in 1919 in Robbinsdale, Minnesota by Wilford Hamilton "Captain Billy" Fawcett (1885-1940). At the age of 16, Fawcett ran away from home to join the Army, and the Spanish-American War took him to the Philippines. Back in Minnesota, he became a police reporter for the Minneapolis Journal. While a World War I Army captain, Fawcett's experience with the Army publication Stars and Stripes gave him the notion to get into publishing, and his bawdy cartoon and joke magazine, Captain Billy's Whiz Bang, became the launch pad for a vast publishing empire embracing magazines, comic books and paperback books.
Captain Billy's Whiz Bang is immortalized in the lyrics to the song "Trouble" from Meredith Willson's The Music Man (1962): "Is there a nicotine stain on his index finger? A dime novel hidden in the corncrib? Is he starting to memorize jokes from Captain Billy's Whiz Bang?" Yet this is an anachronism, since The Music Man takes place in River City, Iowa, during 1912, seven years before the magazine's premiere issue.

"Captain Billy's Whiz Bang" combined Fawcett's military moniker with the nickname of a destructive World War I artillery shell. (So sayeth the Internets.)
PS: My mother (now deceased) was related to the Fawcett family. Hopefully, not, "Captain Billy."
Her parents divorced when she was young, and such details were not discussed in front of the "Little Pitchers" back in those days. I haven't thought of this in years.
Since I was adopted, my DNA is home safe. :)
Dale of Diamond Springs responded:
Wilford (Billy) H. Fawcett returned to Minnesota from World War I with a footlocker full of dirty jokes. On a slow night in 1920 while he was working at the Minneapolis Tribune he sorted through the jokes and put them into a pamphlet he titled "Captain Billy's Whiz-Bang" [whiz-bang being the sound shells made during the war]. The content was loosely organized around Whiz-Bang farm in Robbinsdale, the original Lake Woebegone. Characters included Gus, the hired man; Deacon Callahan, whose daughter, Lizzie's virtue was always being designed upon; and Pedro the bull who rejected unworthy author submissions. The masthead read "explosion of pedigreed bull." The jokes were juvenile, sexist, racist, anti-Semitic, and haven't aged well.

Fawcett later started a company, 'Gold Medal Books' that paid authors handsomely (for the times - starting in the late 40's), for the right to republish hard cover books into paperbacks. Comic magazine ~ For much of the 1920s, Captain Billy's was the most prominent comic magazine in America with its mix of racy poetry and naughty jokes and puns, aimed at a small-town audience with pretensions of "sophistication". "Captain Billy's Whiz Bang", became the launch pad for a vast publishing empire embracing magazines, comic books and paperback books in 1919.
And, Joe S answered:
The first thing that came to mind was, the happy result of Viagra administered to Captain Billy. Not so.
Captain Billy's Whiz Bang styled itself as "America's Magazine of Wit, Humor, and Filosophy." Published and edited by Captain Billy Fawcett, a veteran of World War I and the Spanish-American War, the digest-sized magazine features lots of jokes, poems, and Captain Billy's own commentary on the world and his travels therein. From the moment the issue opens by referring to Cuba as "the land of liberty,"you know you've opened a time capsule. The editorial railing against Prohibition, the movie gossip pages filled with names like Arbuckle, Pickford, Fairbanks and Von Stroheim, and the casual racism of the humor all paint a picture of a different time.

A futuristic prop "Star Trek" rifle, Superman's suit and Green Hornet's car are the top-billed items in a Hollywood auction next month, when fans and collectors will have a chance to own memorabilia from film sets and actor closets.
The one-of-a-kind Phaser laser rifle carried by actor William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk in the second pilot for "Star Trek" from 1966 is expected to fetch between $50,000 and $70,000, Julien's Auctions said on Monday.
A black Imperial Crown car called "Black Beauty," belonging to The Green Hornet and used in the 2011 film starring Seth Rogen as the masked vigilante, is expected to fetch between $40,000 and $60,000. It was the only one to survive the production of the film.
A hot collector item is a Superman flying outfit, with red cape and boots, worn by late actor Christopher Reeve in "Superman IV" and expected to fetch between $20,000 and $30,000.
Items belonging to Marilyn Monroe, including a cocktail dress and collections of photographs from films and model shoots, are also on the auction block.

The children of late rapper Notorious B.I.G. will star in an animated series about maintaining the hip-hop legend's New York City recording studio.
Ossian Media announced Monday that "House of Wallace" will feature 16-year-old C.J. Wallace and 19-year-old T'yanna Wallace. The Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace, was shot to death in 1997. His character will appear in "spirit" and "guide them through the adversities they face" when trying to keep the Brooklyn studio open and out of a larger company's hand.
The show has yet to sign with a network, though a representative for Ossian says "a few serious networks are in discussion."
The series will also feature guest appearances from other musical artists.
In the popular TV series "The Walking Dead," humans struggle to escape from a pack of zombies hungry for flesh. Prank alerts have warned of a zombie apocalypse on radio stations in a handful of states. And across the country, zombie wannabes in tattered clothes occasionally fill local parks, gurgling moans of the undead.
Are these just unhealthy obsessions with death and decay? To Clemson University professor Sarah Lauro, the phenomenon isn't harmful or a random fad, but part of a historical trend that mirrors a level of cultural dissatisfaction and economic upheaval.
Lauro, who teaches English at Clemson, studied zombies while working on her doctoral degree at the University of California at Davis. Lauro said she keeps track of zombie movies, TV shows and video games, but her research focuses primarily on the concept of the "zombie walk," a mass gathering of people who, dressed in the clothes and makeup of the undead, stagger about and dance.
It's a fascination that, for Lauro, a self-described "chicken," seems unnatural. Disinterested in violent movies or games, Lauro said she finds herself now taking part in both in an attempt to further understand what makes zombie-lovers tick.

It's not uncommon for soap opera characters thought dead to spring back to life. Now, a pair of soap operas thought dead are being resurrected.
Venerable daytime dramas "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" will soon be reborn online after getting the ax little more than a year ago by ABC, which had broadcast them for decades.
Prospect Park's The Online Network has set its debuts of both long-running soaps for April 29. Both will appear each weekday with new 30-minute episodes available to stream on computers for free on the Hulu website.
Subscribers to Hulu Plus can watch them on a variety of other devices. Episodes will also be available on iTunes.
Authorities and celebrities were grappling Monday with how to respond to a website that posted what appears to be private financial information about top government officials and stars such as Jay-Z and Mel Gibson.
Los Angeles police said they were investigating how the Social Security number, address and a credit report of the police chief ended up on the site. The site also posted the same information about FBI Director Robert Mueller; the bureau said it was aware of the site but declined to say whether it was investigating.
The site also targeted stars such as Beyonce, Ashton Kutcher, Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton. Info posted about Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not include credit reports but included addresses and other sensitive information.
Social Security numbers posted on Gibson, Jay-Z and others matched records in public databases.
The site, which bears an Internet suffix originally assigned to the Soviet Union, expanded throughout the day Monday to add entries on Britney Spears, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and others.

British police made numerous mistakes that let the late BBC TV presenter Jimmy Savile get away with unprecedented numbers of sex attacks over six decades, and such failings could be repeated, a report by inspectors said on Tuesday.
Savile was one of Britain's biggest TV stars in the 1970s and 1980s, but revelations after his death in November 2011 about his activities stunned Britons and destroyed his reputation as an eccentric charity fundraiser.
Police say he took advantage of his fame to commit 214 offences, including 34 rapes or serious sexual assaults, beginning as long ago as 1955.
A one-time professional wrestler, the cigar-chomping Savile became famous as a pioneering DJ in the 1960s before becoming a regular fixture on TV, hosting prime-time pop and children's shows.
He ran about 200 marathons for charity, raising tens of millions of pounds (dollars) for the health service, which led some to give him keys to hospital rooms where victims now allege they were abused. He was knighted by both Britain's Queen Elizabeth and the late Pope John Paul II.
Prosecutors say a 12-year-old boy has admitted making a prank 911 call that drew police to Ashton Kutcher's home.
The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office says the boy admitted responsibility for making a false bomb threat and computer intrusion. He will be sentenced at a later date.
Prosecutors say the boy is also accused of making false 911 calls involving Justin Bieber's house and a bank. Those charges will likely be dismissed, but the district attorney's office says the allegations will be considered when the boy is sentenced.
His calls were among several targeting celebrities in the Los Angeles area in recent months in a practice known as "swatting." The pranks are intended to draw large police responses, including SWAT teams.

The Obama administration answered more requests from the public to see government records under the Freedom of Information Act last year, but more often than it ever has it cited legal exceptions to censor or withhold the material, according to a new analysis by The Associated Press. It frequently cited the need to protect national security and internal deliberations.
The AP's analysis showed the government released all or portions of the information that citizens, journalists, businesses and others sought at about the same rate as the previous three years. It turned over all or parts of the records in about 65 percent of all requests. It fully rejected more than one-third of requests, a slight increase over 2011, including cases when it couldn't find records, a person refused to pay for copies or the request was determined to be improper.
The AP examined more than 5,600 data elements measuring the administration's performance on government transparency since Obama's election.
People submitted more than 590,000 requests for information in fiscal 2012 - an increase of less than 1 percent over the previous year. Including leftover requests from previous years, the government responded to more requests than ever in 2012 - more than 603,000 - a 5 percent increase for the second consecutive year.
When the government withheld or censored records, it cited exceptions built into the law to avoid turning over materials more than 479,000 times, a roughly 22 percent increase over the previous year. In most cases, more than one of the law's exceptions was cited in each request for information.
No need to say goodbye to Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She's staying put as a co-host of "The View" despite reports insisting otherwise.
Series co-creator Barbara Walters called that story "particularly false" on Monday's edition of the ABC daytime talk show. She says that "we have no plans for Elisabeth to leave."
She also denied reports that Hasselbeck has lost favor with "The View" for her conservative political stances, something Walters says "we value and appreciate."
Walters also confirmed that Joy Behar will exit the show in August. Behar was among the first co-hosts with Walters when "The View" debuted in 1997. She announced her planned departure last week.

Two performers who say their songs have been used in Baauer's No. 1 hit "Harlem Shake" are seeking compensation because their vocals have been used without permission.
The New York Times reports that songs from Hector Delgado and Jayson Musson are used in "Harlem Shake," which has become a viral hit thanks to YouTube videos of people dancing to the song.
Delgado's "Maldades" and "Miller Time" by Musson's former rap group, Plastic Little, are said to be sampled in "Harlem Shake." The song is spending its third week on top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
Delgado and Musson say they never gave Baauer, who was born Harry Bauer Rodrigues, permission to use their songs. Both Musson and Delgado are seeking compensation from Mad Decent Records, which put out the single and declined to comment.
A Catholic church has put the brakes on a headstone designed with the NASCAR logo.
Sharon Carr, to honor her late husband, Jason Carr, had a a headstone built in the shape of a couch and decorated with images of a dog, a deer, and NASCAR and Indianapolis Colts logos to represent his interests. But according to the Daily Mail, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Indianapolis has refused to let the headstone in, saying it doesn't meet the requirements of the century-old cemetery.
In turn, Carr is now suing St. Joseph, arguing that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis Properties Inc., which owns the cemetery, never produced any guidelines for headstones until a year after she wanted to add the $9,600 monument. Her husband died in a car accident in 2009.
The Rev. Jonathan Meyer, priest at St. Joseph, disputes this, telling the Daily Mail, "They told her not to move forward with the purchasing of the monument, but she went ahead anyway."
A character actor who had minor roles in "Tootsie," ''Taxi Driver" and dozens of other films has died. Willy Switkes was 83.
Willy Switkes was a native of Washington, D.C., and a longtime New York City resident. He appeared in Broadway productions of "The Cherry Orchard" and "A Thousand Clowns" and was an understudy to Buster Keaton during a 1960 tour of "Once Upon a Mattress." His other films include "The French Connection" and "Bananas."
His characters often were unidentified, such as his "man at cab" credit for "Tootsie," in which he's thrown from a taxi after trying to cut in front of title character Dustin Hoffman.

The puppet-glove covers keeper's hands so the chick does not get any beneficial experiences from people. Wesa is part of the highly successful California condor breeding program begun in the 1980's, when there were only 22 condors left in the world, the Safari Park has hatched 173 chicks and released more than 80 birds into the wild.
