Sometimes known as "The Hero of the Two Worlds" for his accomplishments in the service of both France and the United States, by what name is Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier more commonly known?
Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson Hon FRIBA (born 19 June 1964) is a British politician, writer, and former journalist serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Minister for the Union and Leader of the Conservative Party since 2019. He was Foreign Secretary from 2016 to 2018 and Mayor of London from 2008 to 2016. Johnson was Member of Parliament for Henley from 2001 to 2008 and has been MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip since 2015. Ideologically, Johnson identifies as a one-nation conservative.
Johnson was born in New York City to upper-middle class English parents and educated at Eton College.
Johnson held United Kingdom-United States dual citizenship, as he was born in New York City to English parents. In 2014, Johnson acknowledged he was disputing a demand for capital gains tax from the US tax authorities on a property that he inherited in the United Kingdom, which ultimately he paid. In February 2015, he announced his intention to renounce his US citizenship to demonstrate his loyalty to the UK, which he did in 2016. Johnson has a knowledge of French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Latin, frequently employing and alluding to classical references in both his newspaper columns and his speeches. His favourite movie is The Godfather, due to "the multiple retribution killings at the end".

The United States of America. I did happen to know that from news reports of Johnson recently renouncing his US citizenship after the IRS told him he had to report his income and pay US taxes. Born June 19, 1964 in NYC. Although Johnson has been described as "Britain's Trump" because if his unruly haircut, his public disdain of Muslims, and his desire to limit immigration- Johnson isn't a low IQ psychopathic malignant narcissist as our so-called "POTUS" is. Johnson is much better educated than Trump, and since he was a successful journalist, he can actually read (more than one language). Boris Johnson is just an elitist racist asshole.

Boris Johnson was born in the Big Apple. Wouldn't that make him a natural-born US citizen? Doesn't that mean he could be elected President of the US? Hmmmmm. And does he mind that our guy, Cheeto Mussolini, appears to have kidnapped his hair stylist?

• Early in her career, while she still was in Athens, Greece, Maria Callas sang the lead in Tosca with Antonis Thellentas (sometimes spelled Dellendas). Mr. Thellentas was popular with the Greek audience because of his voice, acting, and size, all of which were great. He had the reputation of being able to eat almost two pounds of macaroni at a single sitting, and because of his size Maria's mother writes that when he and Maria sang an impassioned duet together, she sometimes was forced to close her eyes.
• Opera singer Ian Wallace recalls the time when a very heavy Italian soprano played the part of Gilda in Rigoletto. In this opera, Gilda is murdered, then carried off in a sack by the character Sparafucile. Unfortunately, the singer playing Sparafucile was unable to lift the singer playing Gilda, so the opera director invented three new characters - burly men all - to help Sparafucile lift and carry Gilda off the stage. (This story may be why Sir Rudolf Bing once wrote, "The greatest singers in the world don't fit easily into blue jeans.")
• Adelina Patti, a celebrated diva, seldom showed up for rehearsals (she included a no-rehearsal clause in her contracts), so she often first met her singing co-stars on the stages of the opera house she was performing at the time. In a first-act trio featuring Ms. Patti, a baritone and a tenor, the baritone altered the words of the song he was singing on stage to ask her for an introduction. Ms. Patti being willing, the tenor sang the formal introductions.
• According to an ancient Jewish tradition, a blessing must be chanted when the Sabbath candles are lit. A businesswoman was scrupulous about chanting the blessing, but one Friday she found that she would be unable to return home in time to observe the tradition. So the businesswoman called home and had her maid light the Sabbath candles, then hold the telephone receiver near the candles so she could chant the blessing.
• Pope John XXIII regarded some old customs as nuisances, but having respect for tradition, he modified them instead of entirely doing away with them. He was embarrassed by his attendants' kneeling three times before him whenever they entered or departed from his presence, so he changed the custom so that they kneeled to him only once in the morning and once in the evening.
• Tenor Enrico Caruso was multi-talented. At a performance of Bohème, the bass who was singing the part of Colline whispered to Mr. Caruso that he had lost his voice. Mr. Caruso whispered back for the bass to move his lips, then Mr. Caruso sang the part of the bass with his back to the audience so no one could see what he was doing.
• Tenor Lauritz Melchior was a big man. Fellow opera singer Marjorie Lawrence writes that when he stayed at the Ansonia Hotel on Broadway, it did not have a bath big enough for him. Therefore, each morning he took the service elevator to the basement, where he dunked himself in the swimming pool.

Led Zeppelin on Monday persuaded a U.S. appeals court to reinstate a jury verdict that it did not steal the opening guitar riff for "Stairway to Heaven" from an obscure song written four years earlier.
In a 9-2 decision, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said lead singer Robert Plant's and guitarist Jimmy Page's 1971 rock anthem did not infringe "Taurus," written by guitarist Randy Wolfe of the band Spirit.
"The trial and appeal process has been a long climb up the 'Stairway to Heaven,'" Circuit Judge Margaret McKeown wrote for the majority.
Wolfe, who performed as Randy California, drowned in 1997, but a trustee for his estate sought damages potentially reaching millions of dollars.
The decision in the five-year-old case was a victory for a music industry still combating fallout from a 2015 verdict that Robin Thicke's and Pharrell Williams' 2013 smash "Blurred Lines" copied Marvin Gaye's 1977 hit "Got to Give It Up."
Neil Diamond was back on the stage over the weekend for a very special cause.
The legendary singer and songwriter, 79, performed at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, where he was honored for his impactful musical contributions to the world at Keep Memory Alive's 24th annual Power of Love Gala.
"I'm feeling great," Diamond boasted at the event, which raised money for crucial funds and awareness for the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. "This is an important thing they're doing and I feel honored to be part of it and take part in it."
In addition to his award, which was presented by gala host Jimmy Kimmel and Keep Memory Alive's founder and chairman Larry Ru, Diamond also performed a handful of his greatest hits.
The night wrapped with Diamond singing "Sweet Caroline" alongside Kimmel and some of the evening's other attendees Billy Ray Cyrus, Sammy Hagar, Chris Isaak, and Katlyn Nichols.
Neil Young has made no secret of his deep respect and admiration for Bernie Sanders over the past few months, and this weekend he wrote a long, glowing endorsement of the Vermont senator on his website and encouraged his fans to vote for him.
"I support Bernie because I listen to what he says," he writes. "Every point he makes is what I believe in. Every one. In 2016, if Bernie had run instead of Hillary Clinton, I think we would not have the incompetent mess we have now."
Young recently became a naturalized U.S. citizen even though he's lived in the country for well over 50 years. "Outside the courthouse, after I was naturalized (funny word for it), there was a Democrat Party Registration booth," he writes. "I registered. My first error as a U.S. citizen will be corrected now. I am registering Independent. The wheels are in motion. I don't trust the DNC because I think the DNC is pushing their own agenda over the good of the country."
He goes on to rip into Facebook. "Facebook is full of bots and trolls," he writes. "It's not America. Forget social media. Ignore it and replace it with truth. I don't believe the Facebook social media cesspool of lies, disinformation from other counties and misleading comments. I believe Bernie Sanders. I think Bernie Sanders is the Real Deal."
"Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" will not be taping with a live studio audience amid ongoing concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, TheWrap has learned.
It is unclear how many shows will be affected, but both "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" were set to continue taping into next month.
The decision comes a week after "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek gave an update on his health a year out from his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Though the host said he was doing well in the video, his age and his diagnosis would make him particularly susceptible to infection.
The two Sony Pictures Television-produced game shows are the latest events to be affected by the outbreak, which has caused 26 deaths nationwide as of Monday night. A number of other entertainment events have already been postponed or canceled, as concerns about the spread of the disease, also known as COVID-19, continue to mount.
A man who threatened the life of Rep. Ilhan Omar has been given a lighter sentence after the politician asked for leniency.
Patrick Carlineo Jr. was sentenced on Friday to 12 months and one day in prison alongside three years of supervised release for threatening to assault and murder a United States official, and for being a felon in possession of firearms, according to The Department of Justice.
Carlineo Jr admitted to making comments about Omar to a member of her staff, including threatening to "put a bullet in her f*****g skull"
The 37-year-old politician asked for leniency with a letter to Hon. Frank P. Geraci Jr. detailing why she doesn't think long prison sentences are the answer.
The United States was the largest exporter of major arms from 2015-2019, delivering 76 percent more materiel than runner-up Russia, according to a new study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute think tank.
The U.S. contributed about 35 percent of all the world's arms exports during that five-year time period, partly supported by the increased demand for American advanced military aircraft in Europe, Australia, Japan and Taiwan, said Pieter Wezeman, a senior researcher at SIPRI.
The study found that the U.S. provided major arms - defined by the think tank as air defense systems, armored vehicles, missiles and satellites, among other materiel - to 96 countries in those five years, with half of the weapons going to the Middle East.
From 2015-2019, Russia's major arms exports decreased by 18 percent; France's increased by 72 percent, making it the third largest exporter; and Germany's increased by 17 percent, making it the fourth largest exporter.
Arm exports to countries in conflict in the Middle East increased by 61 percent in 2015-2019 compared to 2010-2014, the study showed. Saudi Arabia, the country to which the U.S. exported the most arms, was the largest importer globally in 2015-2019. The kingdom's imports increased 130 percent compared to the previous five-year period. Armored vehicles, trainer aircraft, missiles and guided bombs were among the leading arms purchased by the kingdom.
On the night of 12 February, a group backing Donald Trump (R-Crooked)'s re-election hosted a glitzy gala for large donors at the Trump International hotel that featured the president. The Super Pac, dubbed America First Action, is no stranger to Trump's Washington DC hotel.
The Super Pac, which has raised almost $48m since 2017, has spent over $540,000 to host events at Trump's hotel, making it a top source of campaign revenues for the hotel and the Trump family business, according to public data and 1100 Pennsylvania, which tracks Trump hotel events.
Meanwhile, in mid-December, some mega-donors rented pricey rooms at the hotel for a two-day event hosted by Trump Victory, a fundraising committee for the president's 2020 campaign, which also drew Trump and the vice-president, Mike Pence. The hotel also seems to have capitalized with high rates: the cheapest rooms on Saturday 14 December during the two-day meeting went for a whopping $6,719 compared with the usual rate of $500, according to the watchdog group Crew.
Such lavish spending by pro-Trump political committees and their wealthy donors at his hotel highlights how the president, and his Republican allies in Congress, are using the hotel and other Trump properties to woo big donors as the 2020 money chase heats up.
Thus Trump's aggressive fundraising gives a nice boost to his real estate empire - which he never divested from - according to campaign watchdogs and public records. Trump's businesses are literally making money off the 2020 campaign.
Since the end of last year, the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has spread across the world leading to more than 89,000 people globally developing a disease known as COVID-19, with over 3,000 people dying from it.
Over the last few weeks, the number of cases in Italy has soared - at time of writing nearly 1,700 cases have been reported and 34 people have died - although it is believed that the virus had been circulating since mid-January and was masked in most cases by having similar symptoms to the seasonal flu. Researchers at the Luigi Sacco Hospital have managed to successfully isolate the Italian strain of SARS-CoV-2, but it has shocked people to find out that most of the research team that managed this feat is made up of temporary workers on a low wage.
Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports how temps Dr Alessia Lai, Dr Annalisa Bergna, and Dr Arianna Gabrieli, alongside their polish colleague Dr Maciej Tarkowski, also a temp, have worked for more than 10 hours a day in full hazmat suits to achieve the crucial step of isolating the virus.
To employ skilled doctors to use their expertise to work on something so crucial, for long hours, and under immense pressure without job security or a decent wage has had people calling out the European nation, though.
This wage is roughly US $1,330, just above the monthly national minimum wage in the US in 2020. Although many people have been surprised to find doctors in this situation, it is not exclusive to either Italy or scientific research. In almost every single industry in most developed nations, wage growth has not kept up with inflation and the rising costs of housing, education, and health care, while jobs have become less stable, which is why "Millenials" - those born between 1980 and 2000 - really are worse off than their parents' generation.
