In 1961, a computer at Bell Labs was programmed to 'sing' a song in the earliest demonstration of computer speech synthesis. What is the title of that song?
"Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)" is a popular song, written in 1892 by Harry Dacre, with the well-known chorus, "Daisy, Daisy / Give me your answer, do. / I'm half crazy / all for the love of you", ending with the words, "a bicycle built for two".
The song is said to have been inspired by Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick, one of the many mistresses of King Edward VII.
It is the earliest song sung using computer speech synthesis, as later referenced in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
In 1961, an IBM 704 at Bell Labs was programmed to 'sing' "Daisy Bell" in the earliest demonstration of computer speech synthesis.

Randall was first and correct with:
Daisy Bell
Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do
I'm half crazy
all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage
I can't afford a carriage
but you'll look sweet
upon the seat
of a bicycle built for two

The computer HAL sang "Bicycle Built for Two" in the movie 2001: A Space
Odyssey. I'm pretty sure Kubrick chose the song in the movie to mirror
what happened in real life. Therefore I'll guess that the Bell Labs
computer sang "Bicycle Built for Two" in 1961.
Alan J replied:
Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two).

Would you like to hear a song, Dave?
Daisy was the tune.
Deborah responded:
The computer "sang" the "Daisy Bell" song, aka "Bicycle Built for Two." I have a bike like that, and it has a bell. Good choice, Bell labs.

"Daisy Bell" was the computer's first song. It was a sweet song that sounded like Stephen Hawking.
Now, the CPDJT-ID cyborgs are only programmed to sing the "Lie of the Day" and praise his turdiness.
Dale of Sunshine Diamond Springs, Norcali replied:
Daisy Bell ("A Bicycle Built for Two") was sung by Hal 9000 as he was going to sleep. A bunch of us dropped and went to see "Space Odyssey 2001' back in the time when doing that kind of shit was FUN!
DJ Useo responded:
I always remember this by word association. I think of the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey, & how
H.a.L. sings "Daisy" & then I add "belle" for "Daisy Belle".
Joe S answered:
I skipped a lot of questions that I knew the answer right off and didn't bother to respond until this one that I had to look up. The answer, Daisy Bell. I guessed Mary Had a Little Lamb, but I think that was the first recorded song. I could be wrong.

Just heard a snippet of Les Moonves, head of the network that did NOT carry the Oscars, with great tact & empathy for the poor people at PW who will be taking the heat for the envelope mess, say he wouldn't hesitate to fire the entire company. "They only had one job to do..."
It's true that someone, or several people, should be held accountable for the mistake, but I HATE bosses who are so willing to boil things down like that--there were lots of people at PW involved in collecting votes, tabulating votes, preparing envelopes, etc--and call for firing everyone from the comfort of his executive perch. Moonves just moved, in my estimation, to the "ass" column in the book of life.

A French scholar said he was detained for 10 hours at a Houston airport and nearly deported last week as he traveled to College Station for a symposium at Texas A&M.
Henry Rousso, an Egypt-born expert on the Holocaust, wrote an article for the Huffington Post that was published Monday, detailing the ordeal.
Rousso, in his Huffington Post article titled "Is the United States still the United States?" wrote that his flight from Paris landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
After a random check, federal Customs and Border Protection officers interrogated Rousso for hours, he said, telling him he wouldn't be able to give a lecture at Texas A&M because he only had a tourist visa. The officers, according to Rousso, concluded that he returned to the country to work illegally because he was being paid to speak at the Texas A&M symposium.

A trans-Atlantic wave of puzzlement is rippling across Sweden for the second time in a week, after a prominent Fox News program featured a "Swedish defense and national security advisor" who's unknown to the country's military and foreign-affairs officials.
Swedes, and some Americans, have been wondering about representations of the Nordic nation in the U.S. since President Donald Trump invoked "what's happening last night in Sweden" while alluding to past terror attacks in Europe during a rally Feb. 18. There hadn't been any major incident in Sweden the previous night.
Then, Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly convened an on-air face-off Thursday over Swedish immigration and crime between a Swedish newspaper reporter and a man identified on screen and verbally as a "Swedish defense and national security advisor," Nils Bildt.
But if viewers might have taken the "advisor" for a government insider, the Swedish Defense Ministry and Foreign Office told the newspaper Dagens Nyheter they knew nothing of him. Calls to Swedish officials Saturday weren't immediately returned.
Bildt is a founding member of a corporate geopolitical strategy and security consulting business with offices in Washington, Brussels and Tokyo, according its website. His bio speaks to expertise on defense and national security issues, saying his experience includes serving as a naval officer, working for a Japanese official and writing books on issues ranging from investment and political climates to security issues in working in hostile environments.
When Nguyen Thi Xuan said goodbye to her Japanese husband in 1954, she thought he was going off for a year or two on another long assignment. She never imagined it would be more than half a century before she'd see him again.
Like many Vietnamese women married to Japanese soldiers, Xuan's family was split up, victimized by the stormy relationship between the countries.
In a sign of just how far the relationship has come, several surviving widows and families of former Japanese soldiers - including Xuan - will have an opportunity to meet with Japanese Emperor Akihito when he visits Vietnam for the first time this week.
Japanese troops invaded Vietnam in 1940 and remained there until Japan surrendered to the allies in 1945, ending World War II. Xuan's husband, however, was among some 700 Japanese soldiers who remained in Vietnam after revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh declared independence from French colonial rule in 1945.
The Japanese soldiers helped train Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh to fight the French. But after the Viet Minh defeated the colonial forces in 1954, Xuan's husband was one of 71 former Japanese soldiers who had to leave the communist North without being able to bring their families, because Japan was on the other side of the Cold War. He left behind his two children and his pregnant 29-year-old wife.

It's goodbye for now to the grand Art Deco lobby and celebrities crossing paths en route to "The Towers" at the Waldorf Astoria: one of the world's most luxurious hotels is closing for renovation.
The legendary establishment opened at its Park Avenue location in midtown Manhattan in 1931 with more than 1,400 rooms, the largest -- and tallest -- anywhere at the time.
It has hosted a stream of international political leaders, movie stars, tycoons and power players of all kinds for more than 85 years.
The hotel's owner, Anbang Insurance Group, says it will close the hotel indefinitely for major renovations starting Wednesday.
Although it has released no official renovation plan, Anbang is expected to convert a large number of rooms into luxury apartments with boutique stores on the ground floor, leaving only a small part of the building as a hotel.
The United States will on Monday claim its seat at the UN Human Rights Council under the new presidency of Donald Trump, whose election has provoked deep concern over the body's future.
Over its 11-year history, the council has come in for criticism, including allegations that it has, at times, been co-opted by rights abusers who push resolutions attacking their geopolitical rivals, with genuine rights issues marginalised.
But the 47-member panel has had successes -- thanks to support from Barack Obama's administration which held a seat on the council for most of his eight-year term, civil society groups say.
Many of the issues prioritised by Obama's UN envoys -- including violations in North Korea, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and South Sudan -- will remain on the agenda when the council opens its main annual session in Geneva on Monday.
Much of Trump's international agenda remains murky but rights advocates have warned that early signs are not good for either the council or the broader human rights agenda.

Jewish centers and schools across the nation coped with another wave of bomb threats Monday as officials in Philadelphia made plans to repair and restore hundreds of vandalized headstones at a Jewish cemetery.
Jewish Community Centers and day schools in at least a dozen states received threats, according to the JCC Association of North America. No bombs were found. All 21 buildings - 13 community centers and eight schools - were cleared by Monday afternoon and had resumed normal operations, the association said.
It was the fifth round of bomb threats against Jewish institutions since January, prompting outrage and exasperation among Jewish leaders as well as calls for an aggressive federal response to put a stop to it.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the vandalism and bomb threats serious, unacceptable behavior and said the department will "do what it can to assist in pushing back ... and prosecuting anybody that we can prove to be a part of it."

Uber Technologies Inc's senior vice president of engineering, Amit Singhal, has left the company for failing to disclose a sexual harassment allegation, stemming from his tenure at Alphabet Inc's Google , Recode reported, citing sources.
Singhal, who was appointed last month to work closely with Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, was asked to resign after Recode informed the company of the allegation this week, the technology news website said.
The revelation comes as the ride-hailing company deals with a fallout of a blog post from a former female engineer a week ago, alleging harassment and sexism that led to a backlash against the company.
Uber confirmed that Singhal had left the company, but did not provide any further details.

From all over the world, they flocked to this tiny town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, lured by promises of inner peace and eternal life. What many found instead: years of terror - waged in the name of the Lord.
Congregants of the Word of Faith Fellowship were regularly punched, smacked, choked, slammed to the floor or thrown through walls in a violent form of deliverance meant to "purify" sinners by beating out devils, 43 former members told The Associated Press in separate, exclusive interviews.
Victims of the violence included pre-teens and toddlers - even crying babies, who were vigorously shaken, screamed at and sometimes smacked to banish demons.
"I saw so many people beaten over the years. Little kids punched in the face, called Satanists," said Katherine Fetachu, 27, who spent nearly 17 years in the church.
Word of Faith Fellowship, an evangelical church with hundreds of members in North Carolina and branches in other countries, also subjected members to a practice called "blasting" - an ear-piercing verbal onslaught often conducted in hours-long sessions meant to cast out devils.
Wildlife refuge officials say a man with a drone caused 1,500 elk to stampede half a mile.
The stampede happened Monday at the National Elk Refuge in western Wyoming. Elk and bison often congregate at the refuge to eat feed put out to help them survive the winter.
This winter has been especially harsh. More than 3 feet of snow has piled up, conditions that can be very stressful for all kinds of animals.
Disturbing wildlife is a serious offense punishable by a fine up to $5,000.
Refuge spokeswoman Lori Iverson said Thursday refuge officials gave the man from Washington, D.C., a $280 ticket after he launched the drone from a highway pullout and flew it over the resting elk herd. Refuge officials declined to identify him.
