Daniel Politi: Sixty-Five Percent of Voters Believe Trump Will Win Reelection (Slate)
Democratic presidential hopefuls are fighting hard to become the party's nominee but if most voters' instincts are correct, it will all be for nothing. Sixty-five percent of registered voters across the country think President Donald Trump will probably or definitely be reelected, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll. As might be expected, Republicans are the ones most optimistic about the commander in chief's chances, as more than nine-in-10 believe he will win reelection. But it's a feeling shared by more than one-third of Democrats as well.
One of the most familiar images in 20th-century American art features dentist Dr. Byron McKeeby and Nan Wood Graham. What is the title of this painting set in Eldon, Iowa?
American Gothic is a 1930 painting by Grant Wood in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wood was inspired to paint what is now known as the American Gothic House in Eldon, Iowa, along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house". It depicts a farmer standing beside his daughter - often mistakenly assumed to be his wife.
The figures were modeled by Wood's sister Nan Wood Graham and their dentist Dr. Byron McKeeby. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron evoking 20th-century rural Americana, and the man is holding a pitchfork. The plants on the porch of the house are mother-in-law's tongue and beefsteak begonia, which are the same as the plants in Wood's 1929 portrait of his mother Woman with Plants.
American Gothic is one of the most familiar images in 20th-century American art and has been widely parodied in American popular culture. In 2016-17, the painting was displayed in Paris at the Musée de l'Orangerie and in London at the Royal Academy of Arts in its first showings outside the United States.

Grant Wood's American Gothic painting depicts a farm couple in front of their home in Iowa
In American Gothic, Grant Wood used his sister Nan and his dentist Byron McKeeby as models for a farmer and his daughter, dressing them as what he referred to as tintypes from my old family album.

• When Jon Scieszka, who would later be an author of books for young people, was a kid, he and his older brother Jim often got in trouble. For example, their mother told them not to wrestle in the living room because they would break something. Ignoring her warning, they wrestled in the living room, and they broke the front two legs of the couch. Jon was plenty worried about what would happen when their mother found out, but Jim said, "Don't worry. I know exactly what to say." Their mother found out, and she asked them, "What happened to the couch?" Jim replied, "Jon did it." Jim and Jon shared a bedroom in the basement, which sometimes got cold, so they sometimes used an electric heater. One day they got the idea that they could put out the electric heater the same way that they put out campfires - by peeing on it. The air filled with a nasty odor of fried urine, and they unplugged the heater and opened the windows wide on a freezing day. Jon says, "And whenever our mom asked us about the heater, we said we didn't really need it anymore."
• As a student at the School of American Ballet, Merrill Ashley was able to buy at a low price toe shoes that had been rejected by members of the New York City Ballet. She purchased a pair of toe shoes that had been rejected by Allegra Kent, who had small, narrow feet like Merrill's. She got them ready for a performance at a workshop, tying ribbons to them, and then put them away. Unfortunately, at the time of the performance, she discovered that the shoes were too small - her feet had either grown bigger or had swollen from the hours of lessons and rehearsals. Since they were the only toe shoes she had ready, she crammed them on her feet and danced - earning herself many, many blisters. Still, the pain was worthwhile because dance critic Clive Barnes singled her out for praise in The New York Times, writing, "And one dancer with promise was Linda Merrill." (This was before she changed her name to Merrill Ashley.)
• Pope John Paul II, nee Karol Wojtyla, was active in outdoor sports as a young man. When he was a Cardinal, he skied too near the Czechoslovakian border, and a military patrol stopped him. Cardinal Wojtyla showed him his papers, but the Communist soldier told him he was in big trouble: "Do you realize, you moron, whose personal papers you have stolen? This trick will put you inside [prison] for a long time." Cardinal Wojtyla spent a long time persuading the soldier that the papers were authentic because the soldier kept telling him, "A skiing Cardinal? Do you think I'm nuts?"
• At one time, pulpits were custom built to suit the height of the local preacher. This could lead to problems when guest preachers stood up to preach. Foy E. Wallace, Jr., was a short guest preacher at a Church of Christ, but the regular preacher, Rube Porter, was over six feet tall. When preacher Wallace stood in back of the podium, no one could see him, so he said, "If you don't see me anymore, remember that 'faith comes by hearing,' Romans 10:17."

Beyoncé opened the Celebration of Life for Kobe and Gianna Bryant's memorial service Monday at Staples Center by singing "XO," complete with a chorus and multi-piece orchestra for a song she said was Kobe Bryant's favorite. It kicked off an event heavy on emotion and themes of loss, love and female empowerment embodied in Bryant's father-daughter relationship, which his longtime friend, agent and Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said in his eulogy made Bryant "the world's greatest girl dad."
Performances also came separately from Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera, and the several speakers included Jimmy Kimmel, who emceed the two-hour plus event; and Michael Jordan, Bryant's childhood hero. (Click on the top photo to launch a gallery from the day.)
Also delivering a eulogy was Bryant's Lakers teammate Shaquille O'Neal, with whom he won three consecutive NBA titles as teammates despite often being each other's biggest rival.
The sold-old Staples Center crowd drew luminaries from the basketball world, from Lakers teammates past and present like O'Neal, Derek Fisher, Rick Fox, and Dwight Howard, former coach Phil Jackson and with former GM Jerry West, the latter of whom brought Bryant to Los Angeles; Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez; Dwyane Wade and wife Gabrielle Union; and NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
Other speakers included WNBA and Olympics icon Diana Taurasi; college star Sabrina Ionescu, who plays for the University of Oregon and became close with the Bryant family; and Geno Auriemma, the Hall of Fame coach of the University of Connecticut's women's college basketball team, who said Vanessa Bryant asked him to speak. All highlighted Bryant's relationship with Gigi, a budding basketball player who was following her father's path.
The educational records of a star University of Montana quarterback accused of rape will remain confidential after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to get involved in the case brought by author Jon Krakauer.
Krakauer had made a public records request for the documents in 2014 while writing the book "Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town." But Montana officials denied him access to the documents related to former University of Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson, who was accused of rape by an acquaintance in 2012.
Krakauer, the author of "Into the Wild" and "Into Thin Air," took officials to court over their denial. A lower court initially ordered Krakauer be given access to the records but the Montana Supreme Court disagreed.
Johnson was ultimately acquitted in court but a university disciplinary process had recommended expelling him. Johnson appealed his expulsion to State Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian. It wasn't clear what action Christian took but Johnson remained a student. Krakauer wanted documents related to Christian's intervention.
Krakauer on Monday criticized the federal law that the university system had used to withhold the records, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. University officials had argued the school could lose education funding if it violated the act by releasing confidential student information, while the author said schools use the law to deny the public release of information that might blemish the schools' brand.

Emerging in a stadium to the strains of the Village People's "Macho Man" as 100,000 people cheered, US President Donald Trump (R-Corrupt) looked like he was at a campaign rally in America's Midwest.
But the US leader was thousands of miles away, sweltering in India's scorching heat as he kicked off his first official visit here with a lavish extravaganza at the world's largest cricket stadium.
Five months after being feted by 50,000 people with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a mass rally in Houston, Trump revelled in pomp and pageantry once more as Modi went all-out to welcome him in his home state of Gujarat.
A huge crowd packed Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, dancing to a mixtape of songs from Trump's US campaign rallies as they wore masks of Modi and him.
Trump's penchant for flattery has been noted by many world leaders and Modi -- who also commands crowds of adoring, flag-waving supporters at rallies -- used the occasion to put on a spectacle for the visiting president.
It's easy to forget that Antarctica is technically a desert, until you see it without snow.
A new pair of satellite images shared by NASA's Earth Observatory makes that stark reality clear as ice. NASA's Landsat-8 satellite snapped the two images of Eagle Island (a small island off Antarctica's northwest tip) on Feb. 4 and Feb. 13, 2020, bookending a period of record high temperatures in the southernmost continent. Between the two images, a significant amount of the island's glacial ice disappeared, revealing huge swaths of the barren brown rock underneath.
According to glaciologist Mauri Pelto, a professor of environmental science at Nichols College in Massachusetts, the island lost about 20% of its seasonal snow accumulation in just a few days.
"You see these kinds of melt events in Alaska and Greenland, but not usually in Antarctica," Pelto told NASA.
The melt coincided with not one, but two record-high temperatures recorded on Antarctica this month. On Feb. 6, a research station on the northern edge of the Antarctic Peninsula (the finger of land on the continent's northwest tip, closest to South America) recorded a new record-high temperature of 64.9 degrees Fahrenheit (18.3 degrees Celsius) - surpassing the previous record of 63.5 F (17.5 C), set in March 2015.
Gray whales seem to strand themselves more often during solar storms, according to a new study.
Researchers still don't know exactly how whales navigate the ocean's dark depths during their epic migrations, and it's difficult to study them in action. But recently, scientists discovered that sperm whale strandings in Europe's North Sea seemed to correlate with the same solar storms responsible for the Northern Lights. Another team, based at Duke University and Adler Planetarium in Chicago, found a similar effect, shedding light both on how these whales move around and how conservationists might save them from mass beaching events in the future.
Scientists have recorded whale strandings for decades, and, in many cases, the whales appeared to be otherwise healthy, the researchers wrote in the correspondence published today in Current Biology. If the whales were in good health when they accidentally beached, it's possible that navigational issues were to blame. Building on past research linking beachings with sunspots, they studied 31 years of gray whale stranding data from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and compared it to sunspot data, as well as to data on radiofrequency (RF) noise induced by solar activity and the Ap-index, a measurement of changes to the Earth's magnetic field. Rounding up decades of disparate solar data was no easy feat, and astronomer Lucianne Walkowicz at the Adler Planetarium helped the researchers combine everything into a useful format.
The team chose the gray whale for their research due to its epic migration. Gray whales undertake one of the longest mammalian migrations; scientists have recorded one gray whale who covered 22,000 kilometers in six months, for example.
The researchers found that whales were 2.3 times more likely to beach on days with lots of sunspots, darker areas on the Sun caused by magnetic activity and associated with solar storms. The whales were 4.3 times more likely to beach on days with high RF noise, but the researchers did not observe a significant effect on days when the Ap-index was high, according to the paper. This implies that the whales do probably rely on some sort of magnetic sense to navigate, and that when they get lost, it's not changes to Earth's magnetic field that are to blame but extra noise disrupting the whales' magneto-reception sense, said Granger.
When the parasitic blob known as Henneguya salminicola sinks its spores into the flesh of a tasty fish, it does not hold its breath. That's because H. salminicola is the only known animal on Earth that does not breathe.
If you spent your entire life infecting the dense muscle tissues of fish and underwater worms, like H. salminicola does, you probably wouldn't have much opportunity to turn oxygen into energy, either. However, all other multicellular animals on Earth whose DNA scientists have had a chance to sequence have some respiratory genes. According to a new study published today (Feb. 24) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, H. salminicola's genome does not.
A microscopic and genomic analysis of the creature revealed that, unlike all other known animals, H. salminicola has no mitochondrial genome - the small but crucial portion of DNA stored in an animal's mitochondria that includes genes responsible for respiration.
While that absence is a biological first, it's weirdly in character for the quirky parasite. Like many parasites from the myxozoa class - a group of simple, microscopic swimmers distantly related to jellyfish - H. salminicola may have once looked a lot more like its jelly ancestors but has gradually evolved to have just about none of its multicellular traits.
So, how does H. salminicola acquire energy if it does not breathe? The researchers aren't totally sure. According to Huchon, other similar parasites have proteins that can import ATP (basically, molecular energy) directly from their infected hosts. H. salminicola could be doing something similar, but further study of the oddball organism's genome - what's left of it, anyway - is required to find out.
