Anecdotes

Food

• Throughout his movie career, Mario Lanza gained and (usually) lost weight very quickly. In some of his movies, he seems to gain and lose weight between scenes. Sometimes, a thin Mario will walk into a building, but inside the building a fat Mario is acting. For one movie, the movie studio had Mario’s costumes made in three different sizes: normal, big, and obese. Of course, the movie studio tried to keep his weight under control, but he outfoxed them by doing such things as ordering from room service three different meals using three different names so he could eat as much as he wanted.

• It’s not a good idea to ignore the Marx Brothers. On one occasion, after producer Irving Thalberg had excused himself for a minute from a story conference with the Marx Brothers and then did not return, the Marx Brothers shoved file cabinets against Mr. Thalberg’s door so that he couldn’t enter his office. Another time, Mr. Thalberg left a meeting with the Marx Brothers in order to talk to someone else. When he returned, the Marx Brothers were sitting naked in his office, roasting potatoes in his fireplace. Mr. Thalberg laughed, then ordered butter to be brought to his office for the potatoes.

• Food can be hard to come by early in a career, even when someone becomes a major success later. Working as a model in Chicago, Halle Berry shared a one-bedroom apartment with many roommates. Most of whatever money they had went to pay the rent, leaving little for food. The women made do by going to bars that served free appetizers such as barbequed chicken wings. And when Ms. Berry moved to New York City to become an actress, she spent some nights sleeping in a homeless shelter.

• Comedian Joe E. Brown was born and grew up near Toledo, Ohio. While growing up, he was poor and sometimes hungry. His father was a honest house painter, which apparently was not a good thing to be in the winter. Mr. Brown remembers one winter when meat for the family’s supper depended on his father coming home each day with a rabbit he had hunted. The family used to eat lard sandwiches — lard spread on bread and sprinkled with salt.

• Movie stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon lived very close to each other as they grew up in Boston. Matt’s mother taught him how to cook — a fact that was not lost on other mothers. In fact, Ben’s mother tried to convince him to help out more around the house by telling him that Matt cooked twice a week for his family. Ben jokes, “I first knew him as a guy who was setting a really bad precedent in the neighborhood.”

• Thelma Todd was an attractive platinum-blonde comedian who appeared in 1930s movies with ZaSu Pitts and the Marx Brothers. Her boss, Hal Roach, wanted her to stay attractive, so her contract included a clause stating that she had to keep her weight to within five pounds of what it was when she signed her contract — otherwise, she would be fired. This was known as the “potato clause.”

• Laurel and Hardy created the most massive pie fight in history in their movie short Battle of the Century. To make the short, they bought one day’s production of the Los Angeles Pie Company — a total of 4,000 pies. The short used every pie. (Comedians need special skills. Silent film comedian Fatty Arbuckle was ambidextrous, and using either hand, he could hit a target 10 feet away with a pie.)

Trivia Question from Yesterday

The Mugwumps were US political activists who switched parties in the presidential election of 1884 because they rejected the financial corruption associated their party's candidate. What political party did the Mugwumps leave?

       Republican                                                      Source

The Mugwumps were Republican political activists in the United States who switched parties from the Republican Party by supporting Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in the presidential election of 1884. They switched because they rejected the financial corruption associated with Republican candidate James G. Blaine. In a close election, the Mugwumps supposedly made the difference in New York state and swung the election to Cleveland. The jocular word "mugwump", noted as early as 1832, is from Algonquian mugquomp, "important person, kingpin" (from mugumquomp, "war leader"), implying that they were "sanctimonious" or "holier-than-thou" in holding themselves aloof from party politics.

After the election, "mugwump" survived for more than a decade as an epithet for a party bolter in American politics. Many Mugwumps became Democrats or remained independents and most continued to support reform well into the 20th century. During the Third Party System, party loyalty was in high regard and independents were rare. Theodore Roosevelt stunned his upper class New York City friends by supporting Blaine in 1884; by rejecting the Mugwumps, he kept alive his Republican party leadership, clearing the way for his own political aspirations.

New England and the Northeast had been a stronghold of the Republican Party since the Civil War era, but the Mugwumps considered Blaine to be an untrustworthy and fraudulent candidate. Their idealism and reform sensibilities led them to oppose the political corruption in the politics of the Gilded Age.        Source

Seemed pertinent to point out that the republican party had honor and integrity at one time, opting for nation over party.
Today, truth and justice have been exchanged for unbridled greed and unmitigated corruption as they prove to have no shame, no values, and no right to call themselves patriots.
Lying as a fund-raising gimmick is not patriotic.
Fostering insurrection and sedition is not patriotic.
Dismantling democracy is not patriotic.

  U.S.A. HAS 500,000+ COVID19 DEATHS:
#45 said: "One day, it's like a miracle, it will disappear". Our nation has been waiting in vain for more than a year for “that day, that miracle, that disappearance” to come. However, #45 does not have the ability to create miracles, change time, or even think outside his own mind/hate/desires/lies; so, our nation must pay his very steep price for their hatred of Hillary, love of a false idol, and the idol’s hate-filled doctrine of LIES.
Remember, lies are like the deaths of cowards, their number and scope must grow bigger to protect that first lie.

Or, as in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar:
Caesar
  Cowards die many times before their deaths;
The valiant never taste of death but once.

  What say the augurers?

Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen

"Renegades: Born in the USA"

Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen are making a podcast.

Spotify on Monday announced the launch of "Renegades: Born in the USA," featuring the former president and the legendary rock star in conversation on issues ranging from politics and the state of America to fatherhood, marriage and manhood. The conversations will span eight episodes, the first two of which go live on Monday.

The podcast, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is decidedly the highest-profile collaboration in the history of podcasting.

Many of the conversations between Obama and Springsteen are likely to focus on fixing America's cultural and political divides.

"How did we get here? How could we find our way back to a more unifying American story?" Obama asks in his intro to the show. "On the surface, Bruce and I don't have a lot in common. But over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility. About work, about family and about America. In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much."

Ohio State Abuse Scandal Docuseries

Gym Jordan

George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures is teaming with Sports Illustrated Studios and 101 Studios to produce a docuseries based on a three-decade-long scandal in the athletic department at Ohio State University. The docuseries is based on Sports Illustrated executive editor and senior writer Jon Wertheim’s 2020 digital series “Why Aren’t More People Talking About the Ohio State Sex Abuse Scandal?” which revealed he extent of Ohio State’s sports doctor Richard Strauss’ alleged sexual assaults and manipulation of over 350 (reported) student athletes.

In the expose, UFC Heavyweight Champion and OSU alum Mark Coleman for the first time provided Wertheim with his detailed account and disclosed Strauss’ administration of anabolic steroids. Additionally, Coleman (among others) has alleged that Congressman Gym Jordan knowingly ignored Strauss’ alleged abuse of the athletes as he served as the OSU Assistant Wrestling Coach from 1986-1994.

Even after the school identified merit behind Strauss’ alleged abuse claims, he was simply and quietly let go. No formal reports were ever filed, and he remained on the university’s payroll as a tenured professor. Strauss’ behavior continued unchecked when he was able to open a private men’s clinic in Columbus, just down the street from campus. He continued to operate this clinic until his death by suicide in 2005.

“This article uncovers the most widespread sexual abuse scandal in the history of American higher education,” said Weitheim. “It is a story about power, abuse, enabling and the hierarchy of college sports that had been concealed for far too long. Because these courageous men made the decision to remain silent no longer, we can finally begin to hold the abuser, and those who were complicit in their silence, accountable for their actions – and inactions. With the help of 101 Studios, Authentic Brands Group and Smokehouse Pictures, their voices and stories—harrowing as they are—will be amplified.”

Strauss’ victims continue to seek justice. Only 162 have reached a settlement of $250,000 each and there are over 250 claims still pending.

Dr. Hibbert

‘The Simpsons’

Last June, The Simpsons announced that white actors would no longer be voicing Black characters on the show, and now Harry Shearer has been replaced by veteran voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson in the role of Dr. Julius Hibbert, Deadline has confirmed.

Shearer had been the voice of Dr. Hibbert since the character’s debut more than 30 years ago. Shearer will continue to voice his other characters Including Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner and Mr. Burns.

Fox confirmed to Deadline that last night’s “Diary Queen” episode featuring Shearer as the voice of Dr. Hibbert was his last, and Richardson will take over the character’s voice beginning Sunday, February 28.

The Simpsons‘ new policy followed Family Guy veteran Mike Henry announcement last year that he would no longer voice the black Cleveland Brown character on Fox’s long-running animated hit. Hank Azaria also said last January that he would step back from voicing the Indian American convenience-store proprietor Apu after being heavily criticized for doing so.

Richardson received a 2019 Primetime Emmy nomination for voicing the character Rosie on Netflix’s F Is For Family. He also worked on Family Guy, American Dad!, Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bless The Harts, among others.

28 Years

Daft Punk

Daft Punk fans are devastated over the news that the Parisian electronic music duo have called it quits after almost three decades.

The pair behind some of the biggest dance and pop hits of all time shared an eight-minute video titled “Epilogue” on their YouTube channel. The clip is an excerpt from their 2006 science-fiction film Electroma. A title card on the video reads: “1993-2021.”

Daft Punk’s longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier then confirmed to Pitchfork that the pair have broken up. No reason has been given for the split.

Formed by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Baltanger in 1993, Daft Punk helped pioneer the French house movement of the Nineties.

Over the years the duo have sold millions of records and achieved multiple Grammy wins, including five in 2014 for their album Random Access Memories, which included collaborations with Nile Rodgers and Pharrell.

Having reviewed the former president’s financial disclosures, the group claims that while Mr Trump took credit for donating his official salary, funded by US taxpayers, that was a tiny fraction of the revenue earned through Trump businesses during his presidency.

CREW calculates that even after seeing a major dropoff in hospitality-related revenue in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, in total Mr Trump disclosed at least $1,613,583,013 in revenue from the Trump Organization and other outside income.

At the high end, he disclosed $1,790,614,202, but the disclosure forms are vague with some assets listed as “Over $5,000,000” in yearly income.

A large portion of the revenue came from the more famous properties owned by the group at which Mr Trump was often seen during his presidency — Mar-a-Lago, The Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, and his golf course at Doral in Florida, Bedminster in New Jersey, and Trump National in Virginia.

Conspiracy Theory

Fake Snow?

The US is continuing its recovery after being hard hit by Winter Storm Uri last week, with heavy snowfall seen across much of the country and the state of Texas suffering power outages, rolling blackouts and damage to its water infrastructure as far south as Houston.

But one of the stranger responses to the disaster was the spread of viral conspiracy theory videos on TikTok, Facebook and Twitter claiming that the severe snow was actually “fake” and “government generated” as part of a sinister plot instigated by shadowy “elites”, presumably intentionally plunging Texas into its present state of chaos.

“This goes out to our government and Bill Gates. Thank you Bill Gates for trying to f***ing trick us that this is real snow,” a woman says in one video as she holds a cigarette lighter to a snowball over her bathroom basin.

The same doubts have actually arisen before when snow unexpectedly blanketed Atlanta, Georgia, in February 2014, prompting science writer Phil Plait of Slate to debunk them.

“As the snow melts, the remaining snow absorbs the water. That’s why it doesn’t appear to drip; the snowball becomes a slushball,” he explained, alluding to the process of “sublimation” by which moisture lost from snow disappears as vapour, a gas, and not through dripping water, a liquid.

Ends Lease

Tiffany

The Trump Organisation will have $7m less flowing into its coffers this year now that an iconic retailer has stopped renting space at a Trump-owned building.

Tiffany's announced it would not be renewing its lease with the Trump Organisation, and will be moving its store back to its historical location on Fifth Avenue.

In 2018, the iconic jewelry store agreed to sublease the 74,000-square-foot space on 6 E 57th St. while renovations were done at its Fifth Avenue headquarters.

The store will move back to its original headquarters in mid-2022, leaving the Trump Organisation left with a five-story retail space to fill.

There does not appear to be any political motivation behind Tiffany's move.

Hidden Message Traced Back To Munch

'The Scream'

Written in tiny faint letters on the top-left corner of Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream," is a mysterious inscription that reads, "Could only have been painted by a madman!"

Experts have long debated the identity of the inscriber, with some suggesting a dissatisfied vandalizer is the author, while others pointed fingers at the Norwegian painter himself. Now, a new analysis finds that the mysterious phrase was almost undoubtedly inscribed in Munch's handwriting.

The faint inscription, written in pencil, is visible to the naked eye but it isn't very clear. "It's been very difficult to interpret," Thierry Ford, the paintings conservator at the National Museum of Norway said in a statement. "Through a microscope, you can see that the pencil lines are physically on top of the paint and have been applied after the painting was finished." But it wasn't clear when or why.

The inscription was first mentioned by a Danish art critic in 1904 when the painting was on exhibit in Copenhagen, about 11 years after Munch painted it. The critic thought, at the time, that a member of the public wrote the message, according to the statement.

The researchers hypothesize that Munch wrote this phrase after his painting was exhibited for the first time domestically at the Blomqvist gallery in Norway in 1893 (he had previously exhibited the painting several times abroad). This exhibition in Norway drew much criticism, with one art critic Henrik Grosch writing that the painting is proof people should not "consider Munch a serious man with a normal brain," according to the statement.
