Trivia Question from Yesterday

What American writer and public intellectual wrote mystery novels using the pseudonym "Edgar Box"?

       Gore Vidal                                                      Source

Eugene Luther Gore Vidal (born Eugene Louis Vidal, October 3, 1925 - July 31, 2012) was an American writer and public intellectual known for his epigrammatic wit, patrician manner, and polished style of writing.

Vidal was born into a political family; his maternal grandfather, Thomas Pryor Gore, served as United States senator from Oklahoma (1907-1921 and 1931-1937). Vidal himself was a Democratic Party politician who twice sought elected office; first to the United States House of Representatives (New York, 1960), then to the U.S. Senate (California, 1982).

As a political commentator and essayist, Vidal's principal subject was the history of the United States and its society, especially how the militaristic foreign policy reduced the country to a decadent empire. His political and cultural essays were published in The Nation, the New Statesman, the New York Review of Books, and Esquire magazines. As a public intellectual, Gore Vidal's topical debates on sex, politics, and religion with other intellectuals and writers occasionally turned into quarrels with the likes of William F. Buckley Jr. and Norman Mailer.

Vidal took the pseudonym "Edgar Box" and wrote the mystery novels Death in the Fifth Position (1952), Death before Bedtime (1953) and Death Likes it Hot (1954) featuring Peter Cutler Sargeant II, a publicist-turned-private-eye. The Edgar Box genre novels sold well and earned black-listed Vidal a secret living. That mystery-novel success led Vidal to write in other genres and he produced the stageplay The Best Man: A Play about Politics (1960) and the television play Visit to a Small Planet (1957). Two early teleplays were A Sense of Justice (1955) and Honor. He also wrote the pulp novel Thieves Fall Out under the pseudonym "Cameron Kay" but refused to have it reprinted under his real name during his life.        Source

   Gore Vidal.

Dave responded:
Gore Vidal. Vidal was very intelligent, quick witted and eloquent. Debating Vidal was hopeless as William F. Buckley learned to his cost on prime time TV. With a confidence bordering on arrogance, Buckley was deflated by Vidal's sneering contempt for Buckley's brand of intellectual conservatism. After Vidal told Buckley off for defending the 1968 DNC Chicago "police riot" where protesters were assaulted by cops, Buckley was finally driven to shout, "Listen to me you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I'll sock you in the goddamn face and you'll stay plastered!"

Anecdotes

Activism and Activists

• In 1969 at Akron University, activist, artist, and musician Paul Mavrides and some of his activist friends announced that they were going to use their own homemade napalm to burn a puppy to death. Of course, this was a protest against the use of napalm to kill human beings in the Vietnam War. They planned to announce to the crowd that they had no napalm and no puppy, and then they planned to say, "How can you people justify showing up to save a dog, when there's an actual war going on and this napalm is being used on real people?" Unfortunately, the crowd that showed up was so angry that Mr. Mavrides and his activist friends had to be rescued by Akron University police, who smuggled them through underground tunnels to get them safely away from the angry crowd. And the use of napalm in Vietnam continued.

• Alexander Campbell (1788-1866) was forced to take an examination in order to be admitted to the Lord's Supper at the University of Glasgow because the Lord's Supper was restricted to those deemed worthy to take it. After passing muster, participants were given a metallic token to present so they could partake of the Lord's Supper. Mr. Campbell, however, felt that the Lord's Supper should be open to all. Following his conscience, he declined to join the other participants, and he cast his metallic token into the plate as it was being passed round. The metallic token made a sound that echoed throughout the church.

• Birth-control advocate Margaret Sanger looked shy and quiet, but she was tough and determined. Someone once asked her to take some time off for rest and relaxation, but she replied, "I am the protagonist of women who have nothing to laugh about." In 1916, she spent 30 days in jail after her birth-control clinic was shut down and she was charged with "illegal activity." After the 30 days were up, the police wanted to fingerprint her, but she did not want to be fingerprinted. The result: She emerged from jail exhausted and bruised - and triumphant.

• Saul Alinsky, an activist in Chicago, was upset when Station WGN decided not to show a film about Martin Luther because it was opposed by the archdiocese of Chicago. Mr. Alinsky tried to persuade Edward Burke, a monsignor of the archdiocese, to withdraw opposition to the film. Mr. Burke remained opposed to the showing of the film, so Mr. Alinsky said that it ought to be shown "with one proviso, that they show it backward so that Martin Luther will end up as a Catholic."

• A notable act of activism occurred in Berlin when some activists painted some barrels to look like nuclear waste containers, filled them with sand, and then drove into Berlin and dropped them off in a place where they would be noticed. The news was filled with descriptions of the dangers of exposure to nuclear waste, and workers in Hazmat suits worked to remove the barrels. The activism created awareness of the risks of moving nuclear waste through populated areas.

Advice

• Professor Ernst Schneidler taught many artists and illustrators, including Eric Carle, who creates books for children. He was able to motivate his students to do their very best work, perhaps because he was so gifted at doing those things he taught. Actually, he did not spend a lot of time with the students; instead, he simply looked over their work every so often and pronounced judgment on it. Usually, he merely said "Dumb" or "Not dumb." When he said, "Good," which he rarely did, it was exceptionally high praise. He also spoke to the students on occasion. Professor Schneidler was gifted at determining what his students should do and what they should avoid doing: He knew his students' talents. When Mr. Carle tried to do calligraphy, Professor Schneidler told him, "Herr Carle, not so good. Dumb. Don't do that anymore. Anyway, we don't need any more calligraphers." But when Mr. Carle created some linoleum cuts, Professor Schneidler told him, "Good." However, Professor Schneidler added, "That's good, all right. But, ah! You don't even understand why it's good." This Mr. Carle interpreted as meaning, "Go and find out why it's good," which Mr. Carle considered and considers very good advice.

Reporter Barred From Plane

NPR

The State Department Correspondents' Association says the State Department has denied a National Public Radio reporter a seat aboard Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (R-Pendejo)'s plane for an upcoming trip to Europe and Central Asia.

The decision came a few days after Pompeo lashed out at another NPR reporter.

The correspondents' association said Monday the decision to remove NPR correspondent Michele Kelemen from Pompeo's plane led it to conclude "the State Department is retaliating" against NPR. The group asked the State Department to reconsider and allow Kelemen to join Pompeo.

The State Department declined to comment on the correspondents' association request.

In its statement Monday, the correspondents' group said Kelemen "is a consummate professional who has covered the State Department for nearly two decades. We respectfully ask the State Department to reconsider and allow Michele to travel on the plane for this trip."

Dolby Theatre

Oscar Luncheon

Renée Zellweger, Al Pacino and dozens of other Academy Award nominees bowed their heads in a moment of silence Monday for Kobe Bryant to open the annual Oscars luncheon, a somber moment in an otherwise sunny annual affair that serves as a meet-and-greet, celebration and training session for each year's class of nominees.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Laura Dern, Robert De Niro and Quentin Tarantino were all set upon by groups of photographers as they walked into the luncheon being held just a few steps from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, home to the 92nd Academy Awards on Feb. 9.

The luncheon is an annual chance for all Oscar nominees to rub shoulders, celebrate the status many will only have once, and take a class picture, after a roll call of all the nominees summons them to the front of the ballroom. Among those standing near the center of the frame were Pacino, Diane Warren and "Frozen II" songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

In another annual ritual, they were told to keep their acceptance speeches short at the Oscars, ideally 45 seconds or less, and were urged to appoint one person to speak for a group of winners.

Monday's menu was entirely plant-based, with nominees noshing on vegan cheese, micro herbs, roasted maitake mushrooms and forbidden rice, with wines from the fittingly film-friendly vineyards of Francis Ford Coppola.

Golden Toilets Fetch Thousands

Frank Sinatra

The opportunity to sit on the same toilet as Frank Sinatra doesn't come around often. Furnishings from his executive suite at the former Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, were auctioned off Sunday by SS Auction, Inc.

Casino mogul Steve Wynn selected décor from all over the world to furnish the gigantic suite, which totaled over 6,000 square feet, for Sinatra.

Wynn opened the hotel in December 1980, and Sinatra sang there for several years. No one else was allowed to stay there when Sinatra wasn't in residence, David Berenblit, marketing manager at the auction house, told CNN.

Sinatra's Italian marble and gold-seated toilets were highly sought after. One sold for $4,250, and his "basic" marble toilet without the gold seat sold for $1,800.

Sinatra's baby grand piano sold for $7,000, and his Ferdinand Berthoud clock went for $13,000. The top seller was a signed Enid Yandell fountain that sold for $33,000.

Ad Campaign Paused

Mr. Peanut

Planters paused a Super Bowl advertising campaign that hinged on the death of Mr. Peanut, following the recent death of nine people in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, including basketball legend Kobe Bryant, and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna.

Planters killed off Mr. Peanut in an ad posted to social media Jan. 21, which showed Mr. Peanut, and his friends, Wesley Snipes and Matt Walsh, getting into a car accident. As the trio tries to escape the swerving NUTmobile, they cling to a tree branch, but although they were momentarily safe, their combined weight nearly snaps the branch until Mr. Peanut decides to let go and sacrifice his life to save his friends.

The ad drew a variety of responses, with many leaving tributes to the mascot, who was created in 1916. Planters planned to run the ad on television before the Feb. 2 Super Bowl game, along with a spot of Mr. Peanut's funeral during the game's third quarter. The snack brand encouraged people to "pay their respects" by participating in its social media campaign and by entering a contest to win Mr. Peanut swag.

The Planters spokesperson said that as of now, the pause only impacts paid advertising on channels like Twitter and YouTube as well as "some other outreach in the immediate wake of this tragedy." No changes have yet been made to the company's plans for Super Bowl Sunday.

Cropped Photo

Greta Thunberg

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg slammed the Associated Press after the news agency cropped out an African climate change activist from a photograph taken at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last week.

The photo showed Ugandan activist Vanessa Nakate alongside Thunberg and three other women, Isabelle Axelsson, Luisa Neubauer and Loukina Tille, all of whom are members of the Fridays for Future movement popularized by Thunberg.

However, when the picture was used by the Associated Press to accompany an article titled "Thunberg brushes off mockery from US finance chief" on Friday, Nakate, who is on the far left of the picture, was cropped out.

The image in the article was later changed to a similar photograph of the group, but one in which Nakate is in the centre of the image.

After she saw the cropped photos Nakate said in a tweet "You didn't just erase a photo. You erased a continent," the Ugandan climate change activist said in a tweet responding to the slight.

The Company You Keep

Davos Trip

To coordinate coverage of President Donald Trump (R-Schiess Sturm)'s trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the White House provided press credentials to the usual mix of American news organizations, including Fox "News", Reuters and The New York Times.

One media outlet stood out: TruNews, a website aimed at conservative Christians whose founder, a pastor named Rick Wiles, recently described Trump's impeachment as "a Jew coup" planned by "a Jewish cabal."

Five employees of TruNews, which is based in Florida, received formal credentials from the White House to cover the president's trip, Wiles said in an interview last week from his hotel room in Switzerland - a room in a ski lodge reserved by the Trump administration for traveling members of the American press. (Like other media organizations, TruNews paid for its flights and lodging.)

TruNews, which Wiles founded as an online radio program in 1999 called America's Hope, has a history of spreading conspiracy theories and proclaiming an imminent apocalypse. It drew more scrutiny in November after Wiles, in an online video, accused Jews of orchestrating Trump's impeachment.

"That's the way Jews work," Wiles said. "They are deceivers. They plot, they lie, they do whatever they have to do to accomplish their political agenda. This 'Impeach Trump' movement is a Jew coup, and the American people better wake up to it really fast."

Almost All Plant-Based

Oscar Menu

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday that it will be offering entirely plant-based menus at today's Oscar Nominees Luncheon and then in the Dolby Theatre lobbies prior to the 92nd Academy Awards on Feb. 9.

The post-ceremony Governors Ball will be 70% plant-based, and 30% vegetarian, fish and meat. All food will be responsibly sourced and sustainably farmed.

The Academy's new plans follow the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's last-minute decision to have a plant-based menu at the Golden Globes. The menu originally featured a Chilean sea bass dish, but was changed to king oyster mushroom "scallops" with wild mushroom risotto and vegetables. Globes offerings also included a chilled golden beet soup appetizer. A so-called "vegan opera dome" by pastry chef Thomas Henzi was served as dessert.

WME announced that the menu at its pre-Oscar party will be plant-based in honor of its client, "Joker" star and nominee Joaquin Phoenix, who suggested that the Globes go vegan. The agency is partnering with vegan restaurant Nic's on Beverly as well as This Messy Table LA for the Feb. 7 party in Beverly Hills.

Neandertal Treks

Siberia

Neandertals were epic wanderers.

These ancient hominids took a 3,000- to 4,000-kilometer hike from Eastern Europe to the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia around 60,000 years ago, a new study concludes. The evidence is in their handiwork, scientists say, though it's unclear how long the journey took or if it involved several geographically dispersed Neandertal groups passing technical knowledge along the route.

Neandertals at sites in what's now Crimea and the northern Caucasus, just north of the Black Sea in Eastern Europe, and others who occupied Chagyrskaya Cave in southern Siberia crafted comparable stone tools between around 59,000 and 49,000 years ago, researchers report January 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Neandertals were intrepid explorers in their own right," says Richard Roberts, a geochronologist at the University of Wollongong in Australia.

Eastern European and southwestern Asian Neandertals probably hunted wild horses and bison across grasslands and foothills, Roberts, archaeologist Kseniya Kolobova of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk and their colleagues say. Cold, dry conditions pushed at least some of those Neandertals eastward along with migrating herds of prey roughly 60,000 years ago, they suggest.

That wasn't the first such journey for our extinct evolutionary relatives. European Neandertals already had migrated into southern Siberia more than 100,000 years ago. But the Neandertals who reached Siberia's Denisova Cave (SN: 1/30/19) - about 100 kilometers east of Chagyrskaya Cave - made a different type of stone tools, suggesting these Neandertals were part of a separate migration to the region, the researchers say.
