Tommy is the fourth album by English rock band The Who, released by Track Records and Polydor Records in the UK and Decca Records/MCA in the US. A double album telling a loose story about a "deaf, dumb and blind kid", Tommy was the first musical work to be billed overtly as a rock opera. Released in 1969, the album was mostly composed by Pete Townshend. In 1998, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for "historical, artistic and significant value". It has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.
British Army Captain Walker goes missing during an expedition and is believed dead ("Overture"). His widow, Mrs. Walker, gives birth to their son, Tommy ("It's a Boy"). Years later, Captain Walker returns home and discovers that his wife has found a new lover. The Captain murders this man in an altercation ("1921"). To cover up the incident Tommy's parents tell him that he didn't see or hear it. Traumatised, Tommy drops into a semi-catatonic state and becomes deaf, dumb, and blind. Years pass, during which he is outwardly immobile. Inside his head, however, sensations from the outside world are changed into amazing visions accompanied by music ("Amazing Journey/Sparks").

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
It's Tommy Walker, as expressed in the song "It's a Boy!" from the album.
Many think that 1971's Who's Next is their best album, and I do think it's great, but I still think the high point of their oeuvre is 1967's
The Who Sell Out, where the song "Rael" contains instrumental sections later extended in Tommy's "Underture"

Tommy Walker. Saw the Who do Tommy at the Fillmore West in 1969. Epic! The opening act was Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd!! Great show. Bill Graham used to do shows like that. Miles and the Dead on the same show.
Sally said:
Ques: In The Who's rock opera, Tommy, what is Tommy's last name?
Ans: Walker, since that is the parent's surname...
"Tommy" with mum and dad...
PS: In looking at the picture of Lower Downtown Denver, I said the Bronco Stadium was shown in the back right in the picture. Actually, I am thinking that is, "Coors Field" (The Baseball Park) being shown, and the Bronco Stadium is in back of that... Still within walking distance of LoDo. Lot's of celebrating last night. We are all looking forward to, "Pot Bowl" with Washington State and Colorado - playing in Jersey!!
"Stampede!!"
Dave in Tucson responded:
Guessing that since "Captain Walker didn't come home" his unborn child
would be Tommy?
DJ Useo replied:
Tommys last name is WALKER. It would'a been a better name for Elton John's character in the movie what with those feet! LMAO!
It's strange, but after TOMMY being my favorite Who album for so long, I now find QUADROPHENIA my top choice. I've actually heard it in quad. The new remastered versions of the Who albums are AWESOME! The sound difference is amazing. I think you'll like them better than the originals, unless you don't like albums to have bonus tracks. Lol.

British actor Hugh Laurie prompted an outcry in Russia with a Twitter proposal to boycott vodka over President Vladimir Putin's gay rights stance.
Laurie, who has more than 300,000 followers on Twitter, wrote on Saturday: "I'd boycott Russian goods if I could think of a single thing they made besides the rest of the world depressed."
He then added: "Russian vodka is OK if you need to clean the oven. For drinking, it must henceforth be Polish."
Laurie, who is best known as the brilliant but anti-social doctor Gregory House from hit TV series House, is very popular in Russia.
He swiftly retracted the comments, instead urging "good, kind Russians to stand up to the slab-faced goons who deal in this kind of poison."
Laurie's former comedy partner in the series "Jeeves and Wooster", Stephen Fry, who is openly gay, has criticised the anti-gay law and backed a boycott of the Winter Olympics starting in the Russian resort city of Sochi on February 7.

More than 20 notable Canadians have penned a letter to support musician Neil Young following his concert tour to raise money for a First Nation fighting oilsands expansion in northern Alberta.
The group includes creative and performing artists, authors, scientists and a lawyer.
Actor Neve Campbell, Booker-prize-winning author Michael Ondaatje and musician Gord Downie of rock group The Tragically Hip are among those who have signed the letter.
Young played in Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary, and drew fire from politicians and industry over his comments likening the oilsands to Hiroshima.
"The time has come for Canada to decide if we want a future where First Nations rights and title are honoured, agreements with other countries to protect the climate are honoured, and our laws are not written by powerful oil companies," says the letter released Monday.
For the past six years, every feature film chosen by the Producers Guild of America for its top honor has gone on to win the best-picture prize at the Academy Awards. Sunday night, Steve McQueen's historical epic "12 Years a Slave" and Alfonso Cuaron's space odyssey "Gravity" tied for the guild's highest honor.
While an Oscar tie is unlikely, the rare PGA split keeps the Academy Awards race wide open in one of the tightest three-way battles in years. It may have been shut out by the producers, but David O. Russell's con caper "American Hustle" still remains very much in the running following a week of big showings at the Golden Globes, Oscar nominations and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Rounding out the 10 nominees in the PGA's feature category were "American Hustle," ''Blue Jasmine," ''Captain Phillips," ''Dallas Buyers Club," ''Gravity," ''Nebraska," ''Saving Mr. Banks," and "The Wolf of Wall Street."
With only the Directors Guild and Writers Guild awards left to go in the next two weeks, the Oscar race is heading into the home stretch when several thousand academy voters make their choices prior to the March 2 ceremony.
Other trophies presented Sunday night at the guild's 25th annual awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, Calif., included "Frozen" for animated feature, "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" for documentary film, "Behind the Candelabra" for television movie or miniseries, "Breaking Bad" for TV drama series and "Modern Family" for TV comedy series.

Abdellatif Kechiche's romance drama "Blue Is The Warmest Color" snatched up top kudos at France's Lumiere Awards, at a gala ceremony hosted on Monday in Paris.
The Palme d'Or-winning film - sold by Wild Bunch - won best film, director, actress (Lea Seydoux) and female newcomer (Adele Exarchopoulos).
The Lumiere gave Seydoux an actress nod for her performances in both Rebecca Zlotowski's Un Certain Regard-screening "Grand Central" and "Blue."
Nicknamed the French Golden Globes, the Lumiere awards are voted on by France-based journalists working for foreign press titles.
Roman Polanski and David Ives won best adapted screenplay for "Venus in Fur." Meanwhile, Nabil Ayouch's "Horses of God" won best French-language foreign film.
Jimmy Fallon's "Tonight" show, which debuts next month with actor Will Smith and U2 as guests, will look familiar to people who appreciate his current work in the time slot following Jay Leno.
Fallon said he doesn't expect to change his brand of comedy to tailor himself to an earlier time slot. Fallon and his successor at "Late Night," Seth Meyers, met with reporters Sunday as NBC begins the delicate process of a late-night transition.
He rejected the idea of changes to make himself more appealing to an older, middle American audience that likes Leno. It's a delicate subject at NBC, where executives believe Conan O'Brien's limited appeal doomed their first effort to replace Leno. The executives anticipate Fallon's light-hearted comedy translating better.
Leno closes his two-decade run on "Tonight" Feb. 6 with Billy Crystal and Garth Brooks as guests. On Feb. 17, Fallon debuts a week's worth of shows at midnight following NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics. He moves into his regular time slot a week later, followed by Meyers, who has "Saturday Night Live" chum Amy Poehler booked as his first guest.

Most Americans who have MLK Day off will return to their jobs tomorrow. Not Congress. It's taking the whole week off - the mid-January break - to be followed by the mid-February break, another recess in March, and so on through the months until August, which is completely free.
And that's not all. Many Americans might not realize it, but their members of Congress, when they're in Washington, generally work only three days a week. House and Senate leaders brief reporters on what's ahead on Tuesdays, give wrap-up press conferences on Thursdays, and then, like the Nike swoosh logo, they're outta here.
Many lawmakers and observers believe that if members of Congress didn't skip town so often, bipartisan tensions would ease and more work would get done. Last year was the least productive, as measured by legislation enacted, since World War II.
These extollers of the "good old days" remember when lawmakers actually lived full-time in the D.C.-area with their families, instead of doubling-and-tripling up for a few days in town houses on Capitol Hill. They showed up at the same soccer games to cheer on their kids, barbecued on weekends, and had many more opportunities to socialize with each other across party lines.
Not long ago, congressional committees produced the lion's share of legislation, and members of both parties had to work with each other on it. But today, a lot of the legislation originates in the leaders' offices lobbyist's checkbooks, diminishing the role of committees.

Mia Prickett's ancestor was a leader of the Cascade Indians along the Columbia River and was one of the chiefs who signed an 1855 treaty that helped establish the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde in Oregon.
But the Grand Ronde now wants to disenroll Prickett and 79 relatives, and possibly hundreds of other tribal members, because they no longer satisfy new enrollment requirements.
Prickett's family is fighting the effort, part of what some experts have dubbed the "disenrollment epidemic" - a rising number of dramatic clashes over tribal belonging that are sweeping through more than a dozen states, from California to Michigan.
"In my entire life, I have always known I was an Indian. I have always known my family's history, and I am so proud of that," Prickett said. She said her ancestor chief Tumulth was unjustly accused of participating in a revolt and was executed by the U.S. Army - and hence didn't make it onto the tribe's roll, which is now a membership requirement.
But at the core of the problem, tribes and experts agree, is a debate over identity - over who is "Indian enough" to be a tribal member.

Aaron Carroll today offers a graphic depiction of the toll of the anti-vaccination movement. (H/t: Kevin Drum.) It comes from a Council on Foreign Relations interactive map of "vaccine-preventable outbreaks" worldwide 2008-2014.
A couple of manifestations stand out. One is the prevalence of measles in Europe -- especially Britain -- and the US. Measles is endemic in the underdeveloped world because of the unavailability of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine.
But in the developed world it's an artifact of the anti-vaccination movement, which has associated the vaccine with autism. That connection, promoted by the discredited British physician Andrew Wakefield and the starlet Jenny McCarthy, has been thoroughly debunked. But its effects live on, as the map shows.
Vaccine panic also plays a role in the shocking incidence in the U.S. of whooping cough, also beatable by a common vaccine. Researchers have pointed to the effect of "non-medical exemptions" from legally required whooping cough immunizations -- those premised on personal beliefs rather than medical reasons -- as a factor in a 2010 outbreak of whooping cough in California.
These manifestations underscore the folly and irresponsibility of giving credence to anti-vaccination fanatics, as Katie Couric did on her network daytime TV show in December. We examined the ethics of that ratings stunt here and here.

The Bolshoi Theatre on Monday presented its new musical director who has been appointed to help restore the tarnished reputation of the scandal-ridden theatre.
Tugan Sokhiev, a 36-year-old conductor who studied in Saint Petersburg, is currently musical director of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse (ONCT) and of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO Berlin).
On Monday, the Bolshoi's general director Vladimir Urin presented Sokhiev to journalists, calling him "one of the most in-demand young conductors in the West."
Under the terms of his four-year contract with the Bolshoi, Sokhiev will only be conducting its orchestra next season so he can honour his obligations with other orchestras.
Fishermen in wetsuits hunt dolphins at a cove in Taiji, western Japan, January 20, 2014. In an unusual move, U.S. ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy has expressed deep concern over the traditional dolphin hunt in western Japan, where local fisherman corral dolphins in a secluded bay before killing many for meat. The annual dolphin hunt currently underway in Taiji in western Japan has long been a source of controversy and was the topic of "The Cove," an Oscar-winning documentary.
