Frank Rich: No One Listened to Gabrielle Giffords (New York Times)
In March 2010, few of our leaders wanted to see what Giffords saw - that the vandalism and the death threats were part of a tide of insurrectionism that had been rising since the final weeks of the 2008 campaign.

Professor Gribben, now an adjunct professor at Auburn University, is back on the hot seat again -- this time as the editor of a new version of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to be published by New South Press. It replaces the word "nigger" in Twain's text with "slave." (Gribben's more sensitive, 21st century version also drops the word "injun" in favor of "Indian." )

The Twist was a dance inspired by rock and roll music. It became the first worldwide dance craze in the early 1960s, enjoying immense popularity among young people and drawing fire from critics who felt it was too provocative.

"The Twist" by Chubby Checker.
Randy ("If you got time to breathe, you got time for music." Briscoe Darling) replied:
The Twist! Hank Ballard recorded it first. Joey Dee and the Starlighters (with Joe Pesci on rhythm guitar) recorded the Peppermint Twist, and Chubby Checker (with apologies to Fats Domino) recorded the twist. The twist gets a mention of Shake A Tail Feather and Revolution Number 9, to name two.
Charlie responded:
The Twist, of course.

When I was 18 my high school senior class took a "Skip Trip" to New York, all 30 of us. Fantastic trip! We bought cigarettes for 50¢ a pack, only 30¢ a pack more than home. We bought coffee at a counter for 25¢ a cup, only 20¢ a cup more than home. ("Consider it rent on the stool kid.") I bought a tie at Tie City, all they sold were ties can you believe it? We had sandwiches and beer at Jack Dempsey's, no complaints. AND, AND, AND, we saw the Peppermint Lounge. It was noon and the place was empty, closed actually but the manager let us go inside and look. A lot smaller than it looked on TV. We were in New York, and we were in the Peppermint Lounge and we were "Big Stuff."
Another perfect summer day in the middle of winter.

"The Kids Are All Right" won best comedy at the Golden Globes Sunday night -- but all female directors, including Lisa Cholodenko, were shut out of the Directors Guild feature film nominations.
And Mark Ruffalo is none too pleased.
"I would just like to say to the (motion picture) academy members: why don't you grow a pair and vote for Lisa Cholodenko as well!" Ruffalo said backstage at the Globes Sunday.
Annette Bening, who won best performance in a comedy, agreed with Ruffalo.
Returning Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais did indeed let it be known that he wasn't going to hold back in skewering Hollywood's most famous celebrities. And, in what will undoubtedly be his last hosting gig for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (and, who knows, maybe any Stateside awards) he didn't disappoint.
But in the process of making searingly funny jokes at more than just the obvious targets (Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, the HFPA itself), the heat he put into the punch lines might have made him more of the story than the actual winners.
And yet, it made for compelling -- if sometimes wince-inducing -- television. Given the staid lameness of most awards shows -- hello, Emmys -- at least he kept those who are not in the industry laughing uproariously. (His "I warned them" line came after a particularly funny joke about Hugh Hefner's new fiancee, complete with physical comedy and facial expressions).
Gervais's jokes were so incendiary that when he went missing during the second half of the show, the Twitterverse lit up with suggestions that he'd been fired backstage. Clearly, Gervais had done so much damage entertaining the viewers at home (or appalling them, depending on their belief in decorum), that he became the story of the night.
But if Gervais wasn't intending to come back, which is what he's said prior, he sure went out swinging, thanking all the right people -- the HFPA, NBC, the stars in the room for being good sports, then ending with, "And God, for making me an atheist."

Actress Daryl Hannah, an activist against child sex slavery, rode with police in Oregon over the weekend as they patrolled strip clubs and areas known for prostitution.
KGW reports Hannah was in Portland for a weekend conference against sex trafficking. She says she was shocked to learn a majority of the girls in the strip clubs are represented by pimps.
Hannah is supporting a bill sponsored by Sen. Ron Wyden that would fund shelters for young women to help them escape sex trafficking.
The top cat at this year's Miss'd America pageant is the leopard print-clad Kitty Hiccups.
Hiccups, also known as 32-year-old David Hyland, was crowned the 2011 Miss'd America on Sunday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
The irreverent - and usually hilarious - drag-queen pageant began in 1993, always the day after the Miss America Pageant.
The popular fundraiser returned bigger and better last year after a 5-year absence. The Miss'd America pageant takes place on the same runway once used by the "real" beauty queens, who have since moved on to Las Vegas.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have added a second daughter to their family, born through a surrogate mother.
The couple announced Monday the arrival of Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, born on Dec. 28 at a Nashville, Tenn., hospital.

The couple also has a 2-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose. Kidman credited her first daughter's unexpected appearance to swimming in the waters of a small Australian Outback town during the filming of "Australia." She and six other women became pregnant after swimming in Kununurra.

Apple co-founder and chief executive Steve Jobs announced he was taking another medical leave of absence on Monday, reviving questions about the future of the global technology powerhouse.
Jobs, 55, who underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004 and a liver transplant in 2009, said he would continue as chief executive "and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company."
Wall Street was closed for a holiday but the surprise announcement that the iconic technology executive was facing renewed health issues sent Apple shares tumbling in Frankfurt, where they lost 6.57 percent to 243.10 euros.
Jobs, the Silicon Valley legend behind the Macintosh computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad, said chief operating officer Tim Cook would be "responsible for all of Apple's day to day operations" during his absence.
Actor Liam McIntyre will replace Andy Whitfield, who is battling cancer, on the U.S. cable series "Spartacus."
The series airs on U.S. cable network Starz, which made the announcement Monday.
McIntyre will play the Thracian warrior sold into slavery in the Roman Republic city of Capua.
"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead 'Spartacus' forward," said Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht. "It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."

The 800-mile trans-Alaska pipeline remains shut down as repair work continued to fix a leak.
The pipeline was shut down early Saturday to install a bypass pipe around the leak. The shutdown was only expected to last 36 hours, but the restart now is expected to take place early Monday.
Workers are installing a 157-foot pipe around the leak discovered more than a week ago at a booster pump at a station on the North Slope.
Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. operates the pipeline and says sealing and draining the pipe is taking longer than expected.

Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper had to call the fire department Sunday night when a fire broke out at his mom's suburban Philadelphia home.
Four engines responded to the Jenkinton, Penn. house at 10:14 p.m., the dispatch supervisor tells The Hollywood Reporter. The actors were with several members of their family.
"It was not a very major fire," an official says. "We didn't have to use hoses. It was out within a few minutes. Pretty much the fireplace got a little out of control."
Added the Jenkintown Police Department supervisor, "No one was hurt. No one was transported to the hospital."

It's official: "Che bella giornata (What a Beautiful Day)," an unlikely comedy from television funnyman Checco Zalone, has passed Roberto Benigni's three-time Oscar winning "La vita e' bella (Life is Beautiful)" to set the all-time national earnings record for an Italian film.
According to the Italian press, "Che bella giornata" officially passed the previous record of 31.2 million ($41.8 million) in gross earnings some time during the matinee screenings on Sunday.
As of Monday morning, the film's earnings stood at 31.5 million ($42.2 million) and is likely to still grow for a while: the film is in only its second week of release.
"Che bella giornata," distributed by Medusa Films, tells the story of a security guard who still lives at home, played by Zalone, who draws the job of guarding the Madonnina, the statue on the top of Milan's Duomo Cathedral.
The federal government has spent millions of dollars to help farmers nationwide buy greenhouse-like structures called high tunnels that can add valuable weeks and even months to their growing seasons by protecting produce from chilly temperatures.
About $13 million has gone to more than 2,400 farmers in 43 states to help pay for the low-tech tunnels that look like a cross between Quonset huts and conventional greenhouses. The structures, also known as hoop houses, have been particularly beneficial in the north, where they allow farmers to plant as much as four weeks early and keep growing later in the fall.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture touts the tunnels as environmentally friendly and a way to help meet the demand for local and sustainable produce. Experts say high tunnels employ efficient drip irrigation systems and reduce pest problems, diseases and fertilizer costs.
High tunnels typically consist of a series of hoops covered with plastic that can be rolled up on the sides to allow air circulation. Prices vary by size, but they often cost just a few thousand dollars. The USDA does not keep statistics on their use or how much produce is grown in them.
