Paul Krugman: America's Uneven Field (New York Times)
What hasn't been as widely noted, however, is that Mr. Romney's picture of himself as a believer in a level playing field is just as fictional. Where is the evidence that he or his party cares at all about equality of opportunity?
Mickey Lemle: A Eulogy For My Mother
For the first 58 years of my life, I would have to say that my relationship to my mother was a complex and difficult one. She was a huge personality, full of great passions, creativity, rages, and generosity. I remember saying to friends that I loved my mother in small doses, but that she didn't come in small doses. She was a force of nature.

Staying on top of seasonal fruits and vegetables is one way to keep money in your pockets, but there are also some foods that are both healthy and affordable for the everyday diet. Here's a short list of the best picks of healthy foods for the best prices that won't burn a hole in your pocket.
Scott Burns: Rediscovering Florida (AssetBuilder)
The goal of this indulgent experiment is to answer a few questions: Can Florida replace our easy and much loved Mexico, the one lost to the drug cartel wars? Does the Florida real estate market tell us anything about the national market? Can Florida tell us anything about what the rest of the country will feel like in a few decades?
E.B. White: "Wind the Clock, for Tomorrow is Another Day" (Letters of Note)
In March of 1973, E. B. White - the author responsible for such books as Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web - received a letter from a Mr. Nadeau, who sought his opinion on what he saw as a bleak future for the human race. White responded with the following, beautifully written letter.
Jim Fusilli: Meet the Gee-Bees (Wall Street Journal)
Gee-Bees are free to dismiss new music, but let's remember they do so not because they know something about music we don't. It's quite the opposite. We know something they don't-that new music is a joy that enriches our lives and will do so for as long as we choose to listen.

John Charles Frémont (January 21, 1813 - July 13, 1890), was an American military officer, explorer, and the first candidate of the anti-slavery Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. During the 1840s, that era's penny press accorded Frémont the sobriquet The Pathfinder. It remains in use, and he is sometimes called The Great Pathfinder. He retired from the military and moved to the new territory California, after leading a fourth expedition which cost ten lives seeking a rail route over the mountains around the 38th parallel in the winter of 1849.
He became one of the two U.S. Senators of the new state in 1850, and was soon bogged down with lawsuits over land claims between the dispossessions of various land owners during the Mexican-American War, and the explosion of Forty-Niners immigrating during the California Gold Rush. He lost the 1856 presidential election to Democrats James Buchanan and John C. Breckenridge when Democrats warned his election would lead to civil war.

John C. Frémont... another from my personal pantheon of 'greats' that I admire. An army officer, surveyor, naturalist and explorer of no small note, he was also fervently anti-slavery. He ran for president in 1856 with that as part of his platform. Although not without flaws, as we all have, he still played a significant role in our history. A major street is named for him here in Bay City.
Charlie responded:
James Fenimore Cooper's Natty Bumpo had that moniker.
Sally said:
Author James Fenimore Cooper (early 19th century) wrote historical fiction, the most note worthy was, "The Last of the Mohicans," which I personally loved!
Never mind, here we are looking for Cooper's "Leather Stocking" series, and in it the tale of "The Pathfinder," or Natty Bumppo.
Dale of Diamond Springs, CA responded:
In the third installment of the Leatherstocking Tales, Cooper takes his main character, here called the Pathfinder (Natty Bumppo) and examines his role as an explorer for British/Colonial forces in the forests and islands around the Great Lakes. The story is a classic historical adventure/romance and Bumppo falls in love, for the first and only time in the five novels, only to see his choice fall in love with another man - a younger man and good friend of Natty's. Probably the best of the five Leatherstocking novels.
I remember having to read Last of the Mohicans in 7th or 8th grade. Miss Mc Intyre pronounced Fenimore as Fennnniiiiiimmmmmmmore.

In American history, who was 'The Pathfinder'?
I think the answer you want here is Hawk-eye or Deerslayer or Natty Bumppo from James Fenimore Cooper. But it could also be Alexander Caulfield Anderson.

These pictures of a rusting Soviet rocket motor factory taken by the adventurous young lady shown above have set the Internet abuzz. The explorer, named Lana, broke into the Energomash plant outside Moscow and broke in, traipsing all over the place. As Animal NY points out, Russian officials are not pleased. Lana's web site posted threatening letters from the government telling her "not make [her] situation worse." Interestingly, Energomash partnered with Pratt & Whitney in the 2000s to produce Russia's latest rocket motor, the RD-180 that powers the U.S.' fleet of Atlas rockets. Before that, the Russian company's motors powered most Soviet and Russian spacecraft from 1965 to the present... These images really do look like the setting for a sci fi horror film.

Despite his absence from early primary coverage, Current TV's Keith Olbermann will soon be part of the act.
In a tweet posted Sunday, the volatile anchor of the "Countdown" show said he would be "running the election coverage of Current" after Tuesday's New Hampshire primary. On Monday, a Current representative confirmed Olbermann would host future coverage.
Olbermann was missing from last week's coverage of the Iowa caucuses. This led to reports of a feud between Olbermann and the network, where he has been an executive and star for less than a year.
It remains unclear what format election night coverage will adopt with Olbermann participating - a special edition of "Countdown" or one of Current's "Politically Direct" election specials, featuring Current personalities as well as network co-founder Al Gore.

Irreverent British comedian Russell Brand has signed up for a new late night TV comedy show on the FX network, starting later this year, FX said on Monday.
The brash "Get Him to the Greek" star, who last month split with singer Katy Perry after 14 months of marriage, will give U.S. audiences his take on politics, news and pop culture in a six episode show shot before a live audience.
The as yet untitled venture is Brand's foray into U.S. television following movie roles in Hollywood comedies "Arthur" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
Brand, 36, began his career as a stand-up comic in Britain and went on to prove a lively if controversial voice on British radio and television.
Emmy winner Alec Baldwin has committed to at least two more seasons of the NBC comedy "30 Rock", which begins its sixth season on the network on Thursday.
An NBC rep confirmed to TheWrap that Baldwin will continue with the show as long as it is renewed by the network.

Baldwin began tweeting again on Saturday. His missives thus far have included saying he "only came back on Twitter bc I miss @edbegleyjr and @GarryShandling." He also urged his followers to "Buy Oneida flatware" and to "Read a newspaper, in print or online, every day."

"Vertigo" star Kim Novak says she feels violated because music from the Alfred Hitchcock film is used in "The Artist."
The 78-year-old actress said in a statement released Monday that the filmmakers of the French black-and-white homage to silent film had no reason "to depend on Bernard Herrmann's score from 'Vertigo' to provide more drama."
Novak, who played a dual role opposite Jimmy Stewart in the 1958 thriller, said that even though Herrmann was given "a small credit at the end," she believed "this kind of filmmaking trick to be cheating."
"The Artist" leads the Golden Globes with six nominations and is expected to be a front-runner at this year's Academy Awards.
The band released a statement Monday saying the 63-year-old has been diagnosed with lymphoma and is working with doctors on treatment.
The news comes two months after the pioneering heavy metal quartet's original lineup announced it was working on its first album in 33 years with producer Rick Rubin in Los Angeles. The album remains set for a fall release and the rest of the group - vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward - will go to England to continue working with Iommi.
His bandmates asked fans "to send positive vibes" to Iommi.
Rapper Snoop Dogg is facing a minor drug charge in Texas after border agents say they found several joints on his tour bus over the weekend.
Hudspeth County sheriff's office said in a statement that Snoop Dogg, whose name is Calvin Broadus, was arrested Saturday at the Sierra Blanca highway checkpoint and cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor typical in cases involving small amounts of marijuana.
County Judge Becky Dean Walker says paraphernalia citations are typically resolved by a no contest plea and a mailed-in fine of up to $500.
Country singer Willie Nelson was arrested in November 2010 for marijuana possession at that same checkpoint.

Days after Russell Brand filed for divorce from singer Katy Perry, her father is drawing criticism from the Anti-Defamation League for a sermon he delivered last week at a church in Ohio.
Keith Hudson, an evangelist preacher, spewed anti-Semitic epithets in front of hundreds of worshippers, according to various reports.
"You know how to make the Jew jealous?" he said at the Church on the Rise, a nondenominational church in Westlake, Ohio. "Have some money, honey. You go to L.A. and they own all the Rolex and diamond places. Walk down a part of L.A. where we live and it is so rich it smells. You ever smell rich? They are all Jews, hallelujah! Amen."
"We have seen previously manifested in pop culture and in religious and political spheres," Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the ADL said. "Church-based anti-Semitism historically has been one of the most virulent forms of this disease. We have made much progress in this country in terms of religiously based anti-Semitism. That's why this manifestation is so disturbing. It is always much worse when it comes out on a religious platform -- when an individual who is looked up to as a religious leader gives the old anti-Semitic stereotypes a patina of renewed credibility."
Foxman said Hudson's remarks likely would have stayed "within the confines of a congregation," were it not for the fame of his daughter, Katy Perry (born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson).

ABC News' new advertising slogan is "see the whole picture," and division President Ben Sherwood said Monday that reflects an effort to broaden his journalists' definition of what they do.
Sherwood said his goal is to make ABC News one of the world's premier providers of non-fiction content. While that doesn't mean producing cheesy reality shows, Sherwood said his journalists need to have a more entrepreneurial eye about how they present information.
"We are journalists, we are storytellers, we are interested in the world," Sherwood said. "We shouldn't be interested in the way things have always been done."
Those programs and "World News" have increased the amount of lifestyle and celebrity news they offer, leading to some criticism that ABC is emphasizing softer news at a time rivals at CBS have opted for a more meat-and-potatoes approach.

After six months of scandal and crisis management in the wake of the phone-hacking affair at its UK tabloid papers, shares of News Corp have touched new heights as investors say the so-called 'Murdoch discount' has shrunk but cautioned that it won't completely go away.
In the year's first week of trading, News Corp shares rose to a 52-week record, surpassing the highs it hit just before the July 4 story broke of its News of the World tabloid hacking a murdered schoolgirl's voice mail. That story seemingly turned the world against founder Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate) and his family. The media conglomerate lost nearly a quarter of its market capitalization, some $11 billion (7 billion pounds), in just four weeks.
The fact that all of News Corp's papers account for less than 3 percent of its operating profits did little to allay investors fears at the time.
That attitude has changed now said analysts as News Corp shares are up nearly 30 percent since the lows of last summer.
Richard Greenfield, an analyst at BTIG, says no one owns News Corp for its newspapers, which most on Wall Street see as more trouble than they're worth.

Antony Worrall Thompson was arrested Friday after reportedly stealing cheese and wine from a Tesco store in the posh riverside town of Henley-on-Thames, west of London.
A Thames Valley Police spokesman who asked not to be identified because of force policy said there had been five separate offenses over the Christmas holidays, leading to an arrest on Friday.
In a statement on his website, the 60-year-old Worrall Thompson, who has appeared on daytime cookery show "Ready Steady Cook," said he was sorry for his misdeeds.
The Sun newspaper - in a front page story Monday - said he stole cheese and wine. The newspaper, without citing any sources, said he had shoplifted on several occasions by using an automated self-checkout machine but not scanning all of the items.

Thieves carried out a well-organized, pre-dawn heist at Greece's biggest state art museum on Monday, taking two oil paintings by 20th century masters Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian, police said.
A police statement said the burglars who entered through a balcony door also took a pen and ink drawing of a religious scene by Italian 16th century painter Guglielmo Caccia. It said a fourth work by Mondrian also was removed from the National Art Gallery in one of the best-guarded areas of central Athens, but the thieves abandoned it as they fled.
Police said the heist took about seven minutes. The thieves had intentionally set off alarms on several occasions since Sunday evening without actually entering the building, prompting guards to disable at least one.
The burglars still triggered a sensor in the exhibition area, but a guard only got there in time to see a man running off.

Raising its slim, white neck out of the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, one of the world's last surviving whooping cranes hungrily searches a Texas marsh for the blue crabs and berries it devours during its annual migration to the Gulf Coast.
The high-protein diet is supposed to sustain North America's tallest bird through the winter and prepare it for the nesting season in Canada. But this year, the state's devastating drought has made food and water scarce, raising worries that the parched conditions could threaten the only self-sustaining flock of cranes left in the wild.
The lack of rain has made estuaries and marshlands too salty for blue crabs to thrive and destroyed a usually plentiful supply of wolf berries. In addition, a long-lasting "red tide" - a toxic algae that blooms in salty water - has made it dangerous for the birds to eat clams, which retain the algae's toxin and can pass it along the food chain.
In 2009, when Texas last suffered a severe drought, an estimated 23 whooping cranes died between November and March, when they typically head north to nest in Canada's Wood Buffalo National Park. Tests indicated some had contracted rare diseases and were undernourished. Scientists believe some died of starvation.
Unlike other birds, the cranes don't stop to eat while flying back to Canada so the nutrition they get in Texas is especially important. In addition, Linam said, the high-protein diet is key to a successful nesting season. The cranes only produce one chick per season, so there is little room for failure.
