Mark Morford: Death to All Guns (SF Gate)
Is it time? Can we just say it outright? Let's try it: Guns are, socially and ethically, devastating. Worthless. They add nothing of positive, intrinsic value to a culture, a people, a country. They only diminish, destroy, display an awesome sense of malformed ego and disastrously warped humanity. Too much? Too far? Not really.
Froma Harrop: "Real 'Realism' on Gun Control (Creators Syndicate)
Our neighborhoods are full of loners and moody adolescents who dress in black. The vast majority are harmless. Short of arming grade-school librarians, the only sane way to curb the mass killings would be to cut off the flow of mass-killing machines. That's being "realistic."
Connie Schultz: We are Better Than This (Creators Syndicate)
Maybe you've never thought of yourself as political. The thought of writing, calling and visiting your elected officials might even make your skin crawl. If so, I ask you to recall how you felt the moment you found out 20 first-graders were gunned down in Newtown, Conn. Let's get busy and brave.
Susan Estrich: Politics and Personal Responsibility (Creators Syndicate)
We are never going to ban law-abiding, stable and well-trained citizens from owning guns. I have never understood why that is not enough for gun advocates, who always claim (and I have no reason to think otherwise) they are just that. But why assault weapons? Who needs an assault weapon for self-defense? Police officials are almost uniformly against private ownership of such weapons.
Too old to enlist in World War II, this entertainer traveled thousands of miles at his own expense to entertain American troops. He was the first to do so, traveling to both the Caribbean and Alaska before Bob Hope or the USO were organized. Who was this entertainer?
Joe E. Brown (July 28, 1891 - July 6, 1973) was an American actor and comedian, remembered for his amiable screen persona, comic timing, and enormous smile. In 1902, at the age of nine, he joined a troupe of circus tumblers known as the Five Marvelous Ashtons who toured the country on both the circus and vaudeville circuits. Later he became a professional baseball player. After three seasons he returned to the circus, then went into Vaudeville and finally starred on Broadway. He gradually added comedy into his act and transformed himself into a comedian.
Joe E. Brown's own two sons were in the military service. At 50, he was too old to enlist. Likable and gregarious, Brown traveled thousands of miles at his own expense to entertain American troops. He was the first to do so, traveling to both the Caribbean and Alaska before Bob Hope or the USO were organized.
On his return to the States he brought sacks of letters, making sure they were delivered by the Post Office Department. He gave shows in all weather conditions, many in hospitals, sometimes doing his entire show for a single dying soldier. He would sign autographs for everyone. Brown was one of only two civilians to be awarded the Bronze Star in WWII.

Joe E. Brown was an old-time comic actor, who beside being in films, appeared on the Ed Sullivan Variety Show many times especially in the late 50s and 60s.

The movie "Zero Dark Thirty" is misleading and "grossly inaccurate" in its suggestion that torture produced the tip that led the U.S. military to find terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, three senators said Wednesday in a letter to the head of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The members of the Senate Intelligence committee - Dianne Feinstein, Carl Levin and John McCain - insisted that Sony and its president and CEO, Michael Lynton, had an obligation to alter the movie and make clear that torture in the hunt for bin Laden was fiction and not based on fact.
"We are fans of many of your movies, and we understand the special role that movies play in our lives, but the fundamental problem is that people who see 'Zero Dark Thirty' will believe that the events it portrays are facts," the three senators wrote. "The film therefore has the potential to shape American public opinion in a disturbing and misleading manner."
In their letter to Sony, the lawmakers said the "use of torture in the fight against terrorism did severe damage to America's values and standing that cannot be justified or expunged. It remains a stain on our national conscience. We cannot afford to go back to these dark times, and with the release of 'Zero Dark Thirty,' the filmmakers and your production studio are perpetuating the myth that torture is effective. You have a social and moral obligation to get the facts right."

The U.S. National Film Registry on Wednesday named 25 films to be preserved as cultural treasures, ranging from Audrey Hepburn's 1961 classic "Breakfast at Tiffany's" to Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" and the sci-fi action movie "The Matrix."
The film list also includes the 1992 female ensemble comedy-drama, "A League of Their Own," directed by Penny Marshall, and "Born Yesterday," which starred Judy Holliday and was released in 1950, and the 1983 holiday classic "A Christmas Story."
The list includes Hollywood classics, documentaries, early films, and independent and experimental motion pictures spanning the years 1897-1999.
It goes back as far "The Corbett-Fitzsimmons Title Fight" - independently produced motion picture recordings of famous boxing contests from 1897 - and to 1914, when "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "The Wishing Ring; An Idyll of Old England" were released.
The films will be preserved at the library's audio-visual conservation campus in Culpeper, Virginia, and eventually transferred into a digital format.
The Producers Guild of America will honor the documentary "Bully" with the 2013 Stanley Kramer Award at its January awards ceremony, the organization said Tuesday.
Director Lee Hirsch and producer Cynthia Lowen will accept the award. "Bully" follows five high school students as they are subjected to taunts and ridicule and examines the impact their mistreatment has on their lives and their families.
"'Bully' is a powerful and inspiring film that brought much-needed attention to an issue that just about everyone can relate to at one point or another in their life," said 2013 PGA Awards Chair Michael De Luca in a statement.
Released last spring, the film became embroiled in a heated battle with the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board after receiving an R-rating for language. After its distributor, the Weinstein Company, initially threatened to release the film unrated, it ultimately agreed to tone down some language in order to receive a PG-13 rating.

In a possible sign that the nation - or at least network programmers are beginning to regain their composure after Friday's horrific school shootings in Newtown, Conn., episodes of Fox's "Family Guy" and Syfy's "Haven" have been rescheduled.
The "Family Guy" episode "Jesus, Mary and Joseph," which was initially scheduled to run on Sunday before being pulled from the schedule following the massacre, will now air this upcoming Sunday.
An episode of "American Dad" that also was pulled last Sunday has not yet been rescheduled.
The "Reunion" episode of Syfy's "Haven," which was due to air Friday night - the same day of the shootings - will now run on January 17, along with the show's season finale. That episode features fictional gun violence.
In addition to the "Family Guy" and "Haven" postponements, the TLC special "Best Funeral Ever" had its December 26 premiere date pushed back to January, while a recent episode of the ABC drama "Scandal," which depicted the killing of a family of four, was removed from the network's website Monday.

The lead singer of British rock band Lostprophets appeared in court Wednesday charged with child sex offenses including conspiring with a woman to rape a 1-year-old girl.
Prosecutors said Ian Watkins also is accused of conspiring to engage in sexual touching with two children; possessing, making and distributing indecent images; and possessing "extreme" animal pornography.
The 35-year-old singer wore a black hooded top and appeared tired during the hearing in the Welsh capital, Cardiff.
Magistrate Alan Knight ordered the singer detained until his next hearing Dec. 31.
South Wales Police said that Watkins, from the Welsh town of Pontypridd, was arrested Monday and charged Tuesday with "conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a female under 13 and possession/distribution of indecent images of children."
Not everyone is sold on green energy. But one recent convert is an institution dedicated to the legacy of fossil fuels: England's Big Pit National Coal Museum has installed 200 solar panels to help offset energy costs.
The new solar panels will reportedly save the museum approximately $650,000 over the next 25 years, minus the $115,000 cost of installation.
The museum site first opened operations as a coalmine back in 1810 and officially ceased production in 1980. It reached its commercial peak in 1929, employing nearly 1,400 local residents from Wales. It first opened to visitors in 1983 but did not officially become a museum until 2003.
The museum itself has received much acclaim over the years. In 200, UNESCO named the museum a national heritage site, and in 2004 it received the Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year. As part of the tour, visitors are able to travel some 300 feet underground into the former mine to experience what life was like for coal miners.
