Baron Dave's Ultra-Duper Trivia Question Of The Day
In a few WWII-era animated cartoons, Popeye The Sailor Man served in the Navy, and other cartoons have him in the Coast Guard or other branches of service. But the original Segar comic strip predates the war. For which branch of service was the comic strip Popeye a sailor man?
A: The US Navy
B: The British Navy
C: The Merchant Marines
D: The Coast Guard
E: He was never in the military
Answers for Baron Dave's Ultra-Duper Trivia for 12/17/07
A: Freddy Jones
B: Frito Bandito
C: Barney Rubble
D: Cosmo Spacely
E: The Road Runner
All those cartoon voices were Mel Blanc except A.
mj was first, writing:
E. All the rest were Hanna-Barbera creations, the duo who ruined animation,
in my mind.
Tab was second:
Regarding the trivia, I'll say Freddy Jones because
all the rest are recognizable (at least to me) cartoon
characters.
As for the lightbulbs, Baron Dave should have said
six, which is the original five, although he said
four, plus one to check for counting mistakes in
answers.
And if I can recall a joke from the Writer's strike
(WGA, gotta love these guys) about how many writers it
takes to screw in a lightbulb, the first question is,
"well, does it really have to be a lightbulb?".
KevKev answered:
A: Freddy Jones.....Gay Republican voiced by Frank Welker
B: Frito Bandito.....Racist Corporate Icon voiced by Mel Blanc
C: Barney Rubble...Caveman Peeping Tom voiced by Mel Blanc
D: Cosmo Spacely..Globalist NWO Neocon Fascist voiced by Mel Blanc
E: The Road Runner...Coyote Nemesis voiced by Paul "Beep Beep" Julian
The Road Runner never spoke! all the other Characters Spoke!
Thanks to Baron Dave for the Utra-Duper Questions.

Talk about hubris. (shakes head) Irony of the year? Decade? Perhaps even the century?
ducks
PS
Man, I was sure glad to hear about vacuums and fleas. I can do that! And not kill myself or my cat in the process. Sometimes, I love what our tax dollars find out. (trust me, any research conducted by a University in the US has at least partial government funding.)
Thanks, ducks!
I had exactly the same response when I saw that picture.
As to the fleas - we've seen more than our share of the little suckers.
A long time ago, someone told us to put coarse salt in the carpet, let it sit overnight, then vacuum, and all the fleas and their eggs would be dead.
I don't recommend it.
It's impossible to get all the salt up, no matter how much you vacuum, and after a week, or so, it'll dry out your feet (and the cats paws, too).
The salt that was vacuumed will start to rot your Hoover's guts, and there will be a new one in your future.
And, the residual salt in the carpet pulls moisture from the air, and anything rustable sitting on it will start rusting, with the added bonus of staining the carpet.
Kinda funny (even ironic) to find out now we could have avoided a lot of mess and bitching if we'd skipped the salt part altogether.
I met Clint Eastwood way back in 1976 on a dirt road near Malpaso Creek south of Carmel, Ca. Clint owned the property that a log mill I was using was on….one day he drove by and stopped…in his red Ferrari…..he'd just wrapped filming "The Enforcer" (Dirty Harry # 2) and was quite interested in our wood working project at Tassajara Hot Springs back up in the Ventana Wilderness. He didn't say a lot but he was quite observant…I remember those squinting eyes.
Couldn't sleep last night
I was watching TMC around midnight and they were showing the first movie Clint Eastwood ever directed "Play Misty for Me" (1971)…I forgot just how scary and suspenseful this flick was….and how well filmed….oh and the music….the incredible scenery…..and….. Evelyn..the craziest female psycho stalker ever….."Body Heat" (1981) had the sexy and mad "Matty"….."Fatal Attraction" (1987) had the sinister "Alex" and even "The Crush" (1993) had "Adrienne" the underage troublemaker…..but I have never seen a performance quite like that of "Evelyn" ….she had Clint really squinting his eyes in fear.
Play Misty for Me
Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood - Director - "Mystic River" (2003) - "Million Dollar Baby" (2004) - "Flags of Our Fathers"(2006) is a late night Jazz DJ on radio station KRML in Carmel, California. He reads snippets of poetry, gives a little love advise and plays cool jazz. One night he gets a call from a female listener who says "Play Misty for me" (the great Errol Garner hit) so Dave spins it. After his shift he heads over to the local bar called the "Boars Breath" to have a drink…out of nowhere a woman walks up and introduces herself…"I'm Evelyn (Jessica Walter - "Wonder Woman" (1977) - "Vampire" (1979) - "Scruples" (1981) I'm the caller who asks for "Misty"…and just like that, Dave winds up in her bed. But Dave is playing the field…he's out of there the next morning…one night stand…a quickie…he's still hoping his ex-girlfriend (Donna Mills) will return to him.
"Get off my back, Evelyn"
The next night, when Dave goes home, Evelyn has somehow gotten a key to his bachelor pad…..she's cooked him dinner, poured some red wine and is wearing a revealing new low cut dress. Needless to say, Dave is taken aback…"What're you doin' here? How'd you get in?" Let the craziness begin….Dave is going to find out that Evelyn won't go away…and she is absolutely relentless…she is possessed and nothing will stop her…the more Dave tries to get rid of her, the more she digs her claws in.
Drive that Red Jaguar
Dave's girlfriend does come back and Evelyn is deathly jealous. Her creepy behavior become more and more lethal and bizarre as she consumes herself stalking and spying and then she goes over the line and slashes Dave's housekeeper with a kitchen knife. Evelyn gets locked up and Dave and his girlfriend breathe a sigh of relief. A couple months later, Dave is talking on the phone to his girlfriend and she tells him she just got a new room mate named Annabel (Evelyn had given Dave a Poe poem called "Annabel Lee") ….at the same time, the chief of police calls Dave and tells him that Evelyn has escaped from prison…….Dave gets in his red Jaguar and drives as fast as he can down the Coast Highway toward Big Sur……for the final chapter in this classic thriller.
Purple Gene gives "Play Misty for Me" 9 sharp slashing scissors out of 10 for being so incisive and cutting edge ….almost Hitchcockian)
P.S. Even though Clint Eastwood says he's a registered Republican (He voted for Ahnold) I give him a pass because of his racial stance and his love of jazz.)
P.P.S. Clint was elected Mayor of Carmel in 1986 but got tired of dealing with all the small town special interests…he didn't run for a second term.

Aaron McGruder is venturing outside "The Boondocks."
The creator of the hit animated series on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block has struck a deal to develop a live-action series for the online comedy hub Super Deluxe. (Both Cartoon Network and Super Deluxe are owned by Turner Broadcasting.)
Beginning next month, "The Super Rumble Mixshow" will unspool over 20 mini-episodes that will mix sketch comedy and myriad other formats in keeping with McGruder's brand of racially charged humor.
He also will lean on voice talent from "Boondocks" to fill out "Rumble," including actor John Witherspoon, who will answer viewer questions in a recurring skit dubbed "Negrology."
With no end to the Hollywood writers strike in sight, NBC will recycle episodes of the cable series "Monk" and "Psych," beginning March 2.
The mystery shows, which run as a two-hour Friday-night block on USA Network, NBC's corporate sibling, will each return to the cable channel with six new episodes January 11.
Those episodes will then air as an 8-10 p.m. block on NBC on Sunday nights. In addition to the winter 2008 episodes of "Monk" and "Psych," NBC also will have access to older installments of both series.
NBC already is set to bring back crime drama "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," which was relegated to USA this season because of poor ratings, as well as the Web series "Quarterlife."

"Don't Tase Me, Bro," a phrase that swept the nation after a U.S. college student used it seeking to stop campus police from throwing him out of a speech by Sen. John Kerry, was named on Wednesday as the most memorable quote of 2007.
Other phrases on the list:
5. "I don't recall." -- Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' repeated response to questioning at a congressional hearing about the firing of U.S. attorneys.
8. "(I have) a wide stance when going to the bathroom." -- Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig's explanation of why his foot touched that of an undercover policeman in a men's room.
A rare 710-year-old copy of the Magna Carta, among the most important historical documents ever to hit the auction block, sold for $21.3 million on Tuesday at Sotheby's.
The document was bought by a Washington businessman who said he was determined to see it remain in the United States, where it has been on display at the National Archives and Records Administration since 1988.
The last remaining copy in the United States and the last in private hands, the Magna Carta, one of 17 known to exist, was sold by The Perot Foundation, created by billionaire former U.S. presidential candidate Ross Perot to make philanthropic grants. The foundation acquired it from the collections of the Brudenell family of Deene Park in Northamptonshire in 1984.

A federal jury on Wednesday ruled against a man who says he helped "The Sopranos" creator David Chase develop ideas for the hit HBO mob drama.
The jury dismissed the claims of Robert Baer, ruling the aspiring writer and former prosecutor and judge was not owed anything for help he provided while Chase wrote an early draft of the pilot.
Baer claimed a "moral victory" because the jury determined he had performed services for Chase with a reasonable expectation of compensation.
But the jury awarded no money because it found Baer did not prove he had a reasonable expectation of being compensated by Chase. It also found Baer may have been hoping that Chase would help open doors in the entertainment business.
U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday introduced legislation to undo a 50-year-old exemption that lets big radio companies like Clear Channel Communications Inc and CBS Corp air songs without paying record labels or performers any royalties.
For decades, the $20 billion radio broadcasting industry has paid royalties to songwriters and music publishers for the underlying rights to the songs played on the air, but have been excused from paying royalties to artists or labels.
But with music sales in a protracted decline and with new types of broadcasters, like satellite and Web radio operators, being forced to pay performance royalties, the music industry has begun pushing for compensation from terrestrial radio.

In a case that could affect passengers delayed on planes at airports nationwide, an industry trade group is challenging New York's law requiring airlines to provide food, water, clean toilets and fresh air to passengers stuck on the ground for more than three hours.
New York lawmakers passed the "airline passenger bill of rights" - the first law of its kind in the nation - after a series of delays last winter at John F. Kennedy International Airport that left some passengers stranded for more than 10 hours with no food or water, overflowing toilets and no air conditioning.
The industry group is trying to stop the law from taking effect on Jan. 1, arguing that only the federal government can regulate airline services.
State legislators and passenger rights advocates said they pushed for the law because federal regulators have long failed to address what they say has become a chronic problem, particularly at New York airports.
Singer R. Kelly missed a court date Wednesday after his tour bus was delayed and could face arrest if he does not show up in court on Thursday.
The R&B superstar, in the middle of a 45-city tour, faces child pornography charges for allegedly videotaping sex acts with a young teenage girl. He has pleaded not guilty.
Kelly's attorney, Ed Genson told the judge his client tried his best to make it on time, but first snow, then Utah authorities, delayed the tour bus on its journey from a concert date in Sacramento, California, to Chicago.
Police pulled the bus over and discovered its log book did not document enough rest time for the driver. Police ordered the bus to stop for eight hours, Genson said.

This desert oasis east of Los Angeles sold itself for decades on water and all the luxury it brings: strings of emerald golf courses, lush resorts and manicured neighborhoods with sparkling pools.
Now, the region that water built suddenly finds itself on shifting ground - and in danger of drying up. Parts of the Coachella Valley have sunk more than a foot in a decade as groundwater was sucked up to feed a thirsty economy.
A study released this week has left officials scrambling to keep the tap on without jeopardizing more than 120 world-class golf resorts - among them PGA West, Bermuda Dunes Country Club and Mission Hills - or slowing a population that has ballooned by 25 percent in just five years.
Scientists with the water district and the U.S. Geological Survey found that the earth sank anywhere from several inches to more than 13 inches at a dozen locations between 1996 and 2005, including in Indian Wells, La Quinta, Palm Desert and Coachella.
An administrative law judge has sided with a man who was fired from the Catfish Bend Casino in Burlington after posting a "Dilbert" comic strip on an office bulletin board.
During a recent hearing for unemployment benefits, David Steward's bosses said he implied they were a bunch of "drunken lemurs."
According to state records, Steward posted the "Dilbert" comic in late October. It was shortly after officials announced the casino would close.
After the comic was posted, casino managers reviewed surveillance tapes and determined Steward was responsible. He was fired, and the casino subsequently challenged his claim for unemployment benefits.
In this image released by the Witte Museum, an oil on canvas painting, titled, 'Bluebonnet Field, 1912' by Julian Onderdonk is shown. Onderdonk was an early 20th century painter whose work included iconic images of the Alamo, bluebonnet fields and other south Texas scenes. The Witte Museum is seeking approval, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, to move a weather-worn blue shed which served as Onderdonk's studio, to the Witte's grounds.
